be- werkstelligt werden.
Method for producing a solid pigment composition The invention, which represents an improvement or further development of the invention according to the main patent, relates to a method for producing the solid pigment composition according to claim 1I of the main patent.
The main patent claims a solid pigment composition for pigmenting an organic material which contains a finely divided organic or carbon black pigment and a resinous substance which is soluble in the organic material to an extent of at least 5% by weight and which is characterized by
that it contains at least 60% by weight of pigment and that the volume concentration of pigment in the mass when it is under a uniform compression pressure of 1.40 kg / cm ',
is less than 18% in the case of an organic pigment and less than 13% in the case of carbon black.
Furthermore, the main patent claims a method for producing the solid pigment mass, which is characterized in that a mixture is formed in the form of an aqueous paste by a) flocculating an aqueous pigment dispersion and b) an aqueous dispersion of a resinous substance flocculates or a resinous substance from an aqueous solution of a water-soluble salt thereof precipitates, where in the case of the mixture optionally retains an inactive derivative of a dispersant, and that the resinous substance is then softened and then hardened again.
If the pigment in such a mass is a phthalocyanine pigment, then in the organic materials, e.g. B. in paint or printing ink films made from the mass, flocculation may occur. As a result, paints, printing inks and other liquid coating compositions produced from such pigment compositions do not have the full coloring power of the pigment.
The present invention relates to pigment compositions in which this deficiency is reduced to a minimum.
According to the invention, a pigment composition for pigmenting an organic material is created which consists of a phthalocyanine pigment, a basic phthalocyanine derivative defined below and a resin substance which is at least 5% soluble in the organic material and is characterized in that
that the total amount of phthalocyanine pigment and basic phthalocyanine derivative is at least 60 wt. o / o and the total volume concentration of pigment and basic phthalocyanine derivative in the mass under a uniform compression pressure of 1.4 kg / cm2 is less than 18%.
The mixing ratios of pigment and basic phthalocyanine derivative in the pigment composition according to the invention are not critical. Experience has shown that the pigment compositions have excellent properties when they contain 1 to 20% by weight, in particular 2 to 10% by weight, of the basic phthalocyanine derivative,
based on the weight of the pigment.
The expression phthalocyanine pigment x should be understood to mean metal-containing and metal-free phthalocyanines and their halogen derivatives, in particular their chlorine and bromine derivatives. The invention is of particular value in the case of copper phthalocyanine pigments, in particular copper phthalocyanine itself and its partially chlorinated derivatives with up to 1 chlorine atom per molecule, since these pigments tend to flocculate in organic liquids.
The expression basic phthalocyanine derivative is to be understood as a compound or mixture of compounds, each compound having one or more phthalocyanine radicals (which can contain metal or metal-free and can optionally carry substituents) and one or more amino or substituted amino groups that are directly bound to atoms,
which are not part of an aromatic ring or a heterocyclic ring aromatic type.
Specific examples of the basic phthalocyanine derivatives which can be used for the compositions according to the invention are those in British patent specification 972 805, French patents 1 416 399, 1 </ B > 412 828 and 1 483 311 as well as the Belgian patent 671 524.
Particularly valuable basic phthalocyanine derivatives are the polymeric derivatives disclosed in French patent specification 1 416 399 in which two or more pigment molecules are bonded to one another via divalent nitrogen-containing bonding groups. Polymeric condensates made from primary aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or araliphatic amines and halomethylated copper phthalocyanine with 2 to 8 halomethyl groups per mol are particularly valuable.
Such polymeric condensates are characterized in that they are essentially insoluble in a 60% aqueous acetic acid solution. It is believed that they have the following formula:
EMI0002.0018
where CuPc represents a copper phthalocyanine molecule, R represents an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or araliphatic radical, x is 0 to 6 and y is at least 2. It is not excluded, however, that the products of such reactions may contain a polymer with a branched chain.
There could also be multiple bonds between phthalocyanine molecules.
The resinous or glass-like substances contained in the pigment masses can be of natural or synthetic origin, and the choice of substance depends on the type of organic material to be pigmented with the pigment mass.
The pigment compositions according to the invention can contain any resin substance which is at least 5% soluble in the organic material to be pigmented.
Resin substances that are very suitable for the inventive pigment compositions are rosin and chemically modified rosin, such as. B. hydrogenated rosin, polymerized rosin, disproportionated rosin and esterified rosin, and rosin that has been subjected to more than one such modification treatment.
Further resin substances which are suitable for the pigment compositions according to the invention are the polymers of vinyl alkylbenzenes and the copolymers of vinyl alkylbenzenes with alkyl methacrylates or fumarates, which are described in British patents 941 386 and 957 440 and 957,984 are described and claimed. The pigment compositions according to the invention can also contain mixtures of resin substances, which is advantageous in some cases.
There is no sharply definable upper limit for the total content of% by weight of phthalocyanine pigment and of basic phthalocyanine derivative in the pigment compositions according to the invention, and it is generally desirable for the pigment content to be as high as possible.
As a rule, the total amount of these two components is preferably 65 to 85% by weight, since the compositions within this range can be incorporated into organic materials most easily and have the best dispersion properties.
The expression total volume concentration of pigment and basic phthalocyanine derivative has a meaning analogous to the expression pigment volume concentration used in British Patent 978 242. It therefore means the proportion of the total volume (i.e. the apparent volume) of a pigment mass that is actually taken up by solid pigment particles and the basic phthalocyanine derivative.
In relation to a pigment composition composed of phthalocyanine pigment, basic phthalocyanine derivative and resin, the phthalocyanine derivative means the volume of the total pigment volume concentration of pigment and basic phthalocyanine derivative, i.e. the volume of the pigment particles plus the basic phthalocyanine derivative, divided by that of the pigment particles, basic phthalocyanine - Total volume occupied by the ninderivat, resin and air holes.
The total volume concentration of pigment and basic phthalocyanine derivative can be determined analogously to the determination in accordance with British patent specification 978 242.
The process according to the invention can be carried out in such a way that an intimate mixture of a) the phthalocyanine pigment and the basic phthalocyanine derivative in the form of a paste, which was produced by electrolytic flocculation from an aqueous dispersion, and b) a resin substance of the type defined above in the form of a paste, which is produced either by electrolytic flocculation from an aqueous dispersion or by precipitation from an aqueous solution of a salt, the mixture of a) and b)
is essentially free of any dispersant in the chemical form originally present in the aqueous dispersion, and the intimate mixture obtained is treated in such a way that the resinous substance is softened and then re-hardened.
In this embodiment, the preparation of the intimate mixture of a) and b) can be carried out in different ways. For example, a phthalocyanine pigment can, if desired, first be intimately mixed with a basic phthalocyanine derivative by z. B. a dispersion of phthalocyanine pigment in a solution of basic phthalocyanine derivative in a dilute acid or, in the case of a polymeric derivative, in a mixture of a dilute acid and a water-miscible solvent is made basic.
The mixture obtained in this way can then be admixed with the resin substance either directly or after filtering and washing the solid by mixing it with the resin substance in paste form or suspending it in a solution or dispersion of the resin substance, whereupon precipitation or flocculation is caused by a suitable electrolyte, such as. B. a water-soluble acid or a water-soluble salt is added.
According to another procedure, in the case of a resin substance which forms a water-soluble salt, an intimate mixture of a) and b) can be produced by grinding a phthalocyanine pigment and a basic phthalocyanine derivative together in a solution of such a salt, so that a finely divided dispersion is obtained, which is then flocculated with an electrolyte, which is also able to cause flocculation of the resin substance.
For example, an acid can be added to flocculate a pigment and a polymeric basic phthalocyanine derivative, which also causes the colophonium to flocculate from a solution of the potassium salt of the colophonium.
Advantageously, a dispersion of the phthalocyanine pigment in a solution of the basic phthalocyanine derivative in a dilute acid or, in the case of a polymeric derivative, in a mixture of a dilute acid and a water-miscible solvent with the simultaneous addition of an alkali in a alkaline resin soap solution are added so that the resin soap remains in solution, whereupon the pigment flocculated and the rosin are precipitated by the mixture in a suitable electrolyte, e.g. B. a dilute acid solution is added.
This procedure maintains the optimum effectiveness of the basic phthalocyanine derivative against flocculation, while at the same time masses are formed that are easily dispersible in organic media.
In particular, in the first embodiment, an intimate mixture of a) and b) can be produced by the following three steps: 1. Mixing the phthalocyanine pigment with the basic phthalocyanine derivative by treating the solids with sulfuric acid, mixing with water to decompose the sulfate, and Separating and washing the solid; 2. Dispersing the paste obtained in an aqueous solution of a water-soluble salt of the resin substance; 3. Flocculation of the dispersion by means of an electrolyte, which also falls the resin substance.
The 1st stage can be carried out as a sour dough, i.e. H. the phthalocyanine pigment and the basic phthalocyanine derivative can be dissolved in sulfuric acid and the solution poured into water.
Another, more economical procedure is that a mixture of the phthalocyanine pigment and the basic phthalocyanine derivative is thoroughly mixed with an amount of sulfuric acid, the amount of sulfuric acid being sufficient to convert the pigment and the derivative into the sulfates, but not to prevent formation a flowable powder is sufficient, whereupon the flowable powder can be mixed with water.
This latter mode of operation is described and claimed in British patent specification 1026 875.
When carrying out the second stage, the paste is ground in a solution of a water-soluble salt of the resin substance, preferably with rapid agitation by means of particulate grinding elements.
If the resinous or vitreous substance is used as a latex or a water-soluble salt, it is definitely advantageous in the third stage to carry out the flocculation under turbulent conditions, e.g. B. with vigorous stirring to perform.
The resin substance used in the process according to the invention can be one which, in the form of the water-soluble salt, can also act as a dispersant. Rosin salts are examples of such substances. When using such a substance, it is expedient to dissolve the pigment in an aqueous solution of a salt of the resin substance e.g. B. to disperse by grinding. On the other hand, the pigment dispersion can contain a substance that acts exclusively as a dispersant.
However, it is essential that any substance used for this purpose is either removed from the flocculated pigment (e.g. by washing) before the softening is carried out, or that it is one that is chemically changed by the electrolyte used for flocculation and thereby in Water is rendered insoluble and ineffective as a dispersant.
Anion-active dispersants which are water-soluble and effective in the form of the alkali metal or ammonium salts, but in the form of their free acids or certain salts, e.g. B. salts with metals such as calcium, are insoluble in water and ineffective. Examples of such dispersants are Turkish red oil and fatty acid salts, such as
B. sodium stearate or linoleate, or polymerized (e.g. dimerized) tall oil acids. If such dispersants are used, the flocculation of the aqueous dispersion can be achieved by mixing it with a water-soluble acid or a water-soluble salt of a metal other than alkali metals, for example a calcium or barium salt, or certain salts of organic bases such as diphenylguanidine,
can be made.
The method according to the invention can also be carried out in such a way that the phthalocyanine pigment, the basic phthalocyanine derivative and the resin substance are ground with salt and the resin substance is then softened and then hardened again.
The term grinding with salt refers to a process in which a pigment is brought into a finely divided state by being mixed with a soluble substance, e.g. B. with a salt - usually sodium chloride, carbonate or sulfate or calcium chloride - is ground.
In the process according to the invention, the salt grinding should be carried out until an intimate and homogeneous mixture of pigment particles with an average particle size of preferably less than 2 µ and resin substance particles with a similar or smaller particle size results. Dissolving the salt after grinding results in an aqueous suspension of intimately mixed pigment and resin particles.
If necessary, the grinding with salt can be carried out in the presence of a small amount of an organic liquid in order to prevent the transition of the copper phthalocyanine from the ss- to the a-polymorphic form.
After grinding with salt in the process according to the invention, the soluble substance can be dissolved out with water, a dilute acid or any solvent which does not dissolve the resin substance.
In the second (last-mentioned) embodiment, there is presumably a partial softening and re-hardening of the resin substance during the grinding with salt in many cases. An improvement in the Pro products is usually achieved if the resin after grinding with salt, eg. B. during or after the dissolving of the salt, is deliberately softened and then hardened again. In the first and second embodiments of the method according to the invention, the resin substance can be softened and re-hardened in the following ways.
With many resin substances, softening and re-hardening can be achieved by supplying heat and then cooling. In the first embodiment, the duration of the temperature increase is not critical, and the flocculation can be carried out above the softening temperature He, or the temperature can only be increased after the flocculation beyond the softening point.
In the second embodiment, the softening expediently takes place simultaneously with the dissolving out of the salt, in that the temperature of the water used for the extraction or the dilute acid is increased.
But you can also proceed in such a way that the softening is achieved by adding a liquid to an aqueous suspension of flocculated or salt-ground phthalocyanine pigment, basic phthalocyanine derivative and resin substance, the liquid being a solvent for the resin substance and solubility in water of at least 0.1% by weight. For this purpose, you can use water-miscible liquids such. B.
Use acetone or alcohol, or liquids such as toluene, which are only slightly soluble in water. If desired, the temperature of the mixture can be increased. Reshardening can be achieved by washing off the solvent with water. The resin substance can also be softened by adding a suitable liquid to the aqueous suspension of the flocculated or salt-ground pigment and the resin substance in such an amount that an aqueous mixture is obtained which only softens the resin at elevated temperature.
The re-hardening of the resin substance can then take place in various ways. For example, water can be added so that a mixture is obtained from which the resin can no longer extract enough solvent to be softened, or the temperature can simply be lowered. It is also possible to evaporate the solvent if it is sufficiently volatile, or the softened resin substance can be made hard again by subjecting it to a chemical treatment, e.g. B. that calcium or barium chloride is added to form a calcium or barium salt of the resin substance.
After the resin has been cured again in a suitable manner, the pigment mass can be separated from the liquid and then dried.
The pigment compositions obtained by the process according to the invention should be dried under such conditions that the resin substance is not softened in the process.
The pigment compositions according to the invention are valuable because they can be dispersed very easily in organic media and the dispersions obtained in this way have an increased resistance to flocculation during storage compared with compositions according to British patent specification 978,242. In particular, liq sige coating masses such.
For example, paints and printing inks which produce films with very high color stability can be produced in a simple manner by mixing the pigment compositions according to the invention with a paint or printing ink medium by simply stirring.
The invention is explained below with the aid of exemplary embodiments, with parts and percentages being based on weight.
Example 1 25 parts of crude copper phthaloeyanine, which was prepared from phthalic anhydride, urea and a cupric salt with a catalyst in an inert diluent, and 1 part of the polymeric basic copper phthalocyanine derivative prepared in the manner described below mixed with 6 parts of acetic acid and 6 parts of butyl cellosolve in 87 parts of water.
This suspension is then mixed in a cylindri's vessel with 440 parts of grinding elements with an average diameter of 0.5 mm, the vessel being provided with a cooling jacket and a stirrer which has several flat disks sitting on a central shaft. The shaft is rotated for 90 minutes at such a speed that the disks have a peripheral speed of 1016 cm / sec.
The ground slurry is separated from the grinding elements and made alkaline with 50 parts of a 120% aqueous potassium hydroxide solution. A solution of 11 parts of Domerex resin (branded product) in 99 parts of a 3.33% strength aqueous potassium hydroxide solution is then thoroughly stirred with the slurry, whereupon the mixture is poured into 1500 parts of 0.67% strength acetic acid from 90 to 95%. The slurry is allowed to cool to room temperature, whereupon it is filtered, the residue is washed free of acid and electrolyte and then dried in an oven at 70.degree.
The product obtained is a blue pigment composition which is easily dispersible in paint and printing ink media and has only a very low tendency to flocculate in paint films.
The polymeric basic phthalocyanine derivative used in this example is prepared as follows: 278 parts of isopropylamine are stirred while 100 parts of copper tris (chloromethyl) phthalocyanine are added. The mixture is heated to reflux with stirring for 16 hours, after which the excess isopropylamine is removed by steam distillation. The solid copper tris (isopropylaminomethyl) phthalocyanine is filtered off, washed with water and dried.
It is easily soluble in dilute acetic acid and in toluene with the formation of deep blue solutions. A mixture of 14 parts of copper tris (chloromethyl) phthalocyanine, 46 parts of copper tris (isopropylaminomethyl) phthalocyanine and 80 parts of methyl isobutyl ketone is stirred at 90 to 100 ° C. for 16 hours. After cooling, 100 parts of water and 68 parts of a 30% sodium hydroxide solution are added.
The ketone is removed by steam distillation and the solid is filtered off, washed with water and dried. The product is only partially soluble in dilute acetic acid and almost insoluble in toluene.
In this example, the polymeric agent can be replaced by copper penta-isopropylaminophthalocyanine, which is similarly prepared from copper penta- (chloromethyl) phthalocyanine and isopropylamine.
Example 2 12 parts of copper phthalocyanine in a-polymorphic form, 8 parts of copper monochlorophthalocyanine and 1 part of copper tris-cyclohexylaminomethylphthalocyanine (organic pigment derivative XII according to British patent specification 972 805) are mixed with 79 parts of 6% acetic acid, whereupon the mixture is milled as in Example 1 for 90 minutes with 350 parts of milling elements.
The milled slurry is separated from the milling elements and made alkaline with 40 parts of a 12% strength aqueous potassium hydroxide solution, filtered and washed.
The filter cake obtained is slurried with a solution of 9 parts of Polypale resin (branded product) in 51 parts of a 5.3% aqueous potassium hydroxide solution and as much additional water as
that a dispersion with about 15% pigment is created. The dispersion is poured into 1000 parts of 0.67% acetic acid at 90 to 95.degree.
The mixture is kept at this temperature while a solution of 21 parts of calcium chloride in 300 parts of water is added over the course of 15 minutes and then enough 10% ammonia solution is added dropwise to bring the pH to 8.5 amounts. The flocculated suspension is cooled, filtered, the residue was washed and net getrock in an oven at 70.degree.
The product obtained is a blue pigment composition which is easily dispersible in paint and printing ink media and has only a very low tendency to flocculate in paint films.
Example 3 100 parts of copper monochlorophthalocyanine and 5 parts of the polymeric basic copper phthalocyanine derivative used in Example 1 are mixed with 22 parts of acetic acid and 33 parts of butylcellosolve in 495 parts of water, whereupon the mixture is mixed for 60 minutes with 2300 parts of grinding elements such as in Example 1 is milled.
The milled slurry is separated from the milling elements, made alkaline with 185 parts of a 12% aqueous potassium hydroxide solution, filtered and washed.
The filter cake obtained is mixed with a solution of 10 parts of Empol 1014 Dimer Acid (branded product) in 90 parts of a 2,
3% aqueous potassium hydroxide solution and an amount of vinyltoluene-butyl methacrylate latex (latex D according to British patent 936 911), which corresponds to 35 parts of 100% vinyl toluene-butyl methacrylate copolymer, slurried.
The mixture is flocculated by turbulent addition to 4000 parts of 1% sulfuric acid at 90 ° C., kept at 70 ° C. for 2 hours to soften the polymer and then cooled to 30 ° C. to harden again, washed with water and dried at 40 ° C. by circulating air.
The product obtained is a blue pigment composition which is easily dispersible in paint and printing ink media and has a low tendency to flocculate in color films.
Similar pigment compositions can be obtained by replacing latex D with one of the other latexes A to C and Ebis J according to British patent specification 936 911 and using enough latex in each case to produce an end product with 60 to 85% by weight pigment plus basic schem derivative.
Example 4 100 parts of crude copper phthalocyanine, which was prepared from phthalic anhydride, urea and a cupric salt with a catalyst in an inert diluent, and 5 parts of the polymeric basic copper phthalocyanine derivative used in example 1 are also used 24 parts of acetic acid and 24 parts of butylcellosolve mixed in 347 parts of water.
This suspension is passed through a cylindrical vessel provided with a heating jacket, which is filled with grinding elements with an average diameter of 0.5 mm and equipped with a stirrer consisting of several flat disks seated on a central shaft, the disks with be set in rotation at such a speed that the peripheral speed of the disks is 1016 cm / sec. The suspension is fed to the vessel in such a way that the mean residence time of the suspension in the grinding chamber is 90 minutes, the jacket temperature being set so that the temperature of the exiting ground suspension is 60.degree.
The ground dispersion is allowed to run into a thoroughly stirred solution of 45 parts of Dpolymerx resin in 855 parts of 1.55% strength aqueous potassium hydroxide solution, the pH of the mixture being increased by the simultaneous addition of 10% strength aqueous potassium hydroxide solution 10 0,
2 is held in order to keep the resin soap constantly in solution during this process. The dispersion obtained is then injected into 4000 parts of 1.4% strength aqueous acetic acid solution at 95 ° C. and kept at this temperature for 30 minutes. The mixture is then cooled, filtered, the residue washed acid-free with water and dried at 70.degree.
The product obtained is a blue pigment composition which is easily dispersible in paint and printing ink media and has a very low tendency to flocculate in paint films.
Example S 140 parts of copper phthalocyanine in a-polymorphic form, 60 parts of copper monochlorophthalocyanine and 10 parts of the polymeric basic copper phthalocyanine derivative used in Example 1 are mixed with 43 parts of acetic acid and 64 parts of butylcellosolve in 960 parts of water, and the mixture is passed through a grinding vessel according to example 4 in such a way that the average residence time in the grinding chamber is 60 minutes.
The ground dispersion is allowed to run into a thoroughly stirred solution of 113 parts of Polypale resin in 2147 parts of 1.38% aqueous potassium hydroxide solution, the pH value of the mixture being reduced by the simultaneous addition of a 5 % aqueous potassium hydroxide solution is kept at 10 0.2,
in order to keep the resin soap in solution during this process. The dispersion obtained is then injected into 10,000 parts of 1% sulfuric acid at 95 ° C.
whereupon a solution of 26 parts of calcium chloride in 370 parts of water over 10 minutes and then a 10% ammonia solution is added dropwise until the pH of the mixture is about 8.7, the mixture during and another 30 ml After these additions, the mixture is stirred and kept at 95 ° C.
