2-Propyl-1,3-propandiol-terephthalat-isophthalat,
2-Methyl-2äthyl-1,3-propandiol-tetrphthalat isophthalat,
2,2-Diäthyl-1,3-propandiol-tetrephthalat-isophthalat,
2-Methyl-2-propyl-1,3-propandiol-terephthalat isophthalat,
2-Äthyl-2-propyl-1,3-propandiol-terephthalat isophthalat,

Process for the production of soluble high molecular weight linear polyesters or copolyesters
The present invention relates to a process for the production of high molecular weight linear polyesters or copolyesters which are soluble in organic solvents and which are used for coatings, e.g. B. to isolate electrical parts of apparatus or in the manufacture of magnetic tapes can be used. These polyesters are soluble in organic solvents such as toluene, xylene or methyl ethyl ketone, so that solutions of this type can be used for many purposes for which the polyesters known hitherto were not suitable.
The process according to the invention for the production of high molecular weight linear polyesters or copolyesters which are soluble in organic solvents is characterized in that at least one diol of the formula HOCH2C (RR ') CH; : OH, in which R is an alkyl having 1 to 6 carbon atoms and R 'is hydrogen or an alkyl having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, or a mixture of at least one such diol with another diol with terephthalic acid or isophthalic acid or terephthalic acid and isophthalic acid mixed or separated or
Alkyl or phenyl esters of these acids, esterified or transesterified to give diol ester (a) and the diol ester or the diol ester mixture or a mixture of the diol esters condensed with removal of diol and the condensates or a mixture of the condensates to a polyester or copolyester with a Intrinsic viscosity of at least 0.40 is further condensed.
The dimethyl esters of terephthalic or isophthalic acid are preferably used as the starting material for the production according to the invention of the polyesters or copolyesters (usually referred to as polyesters in the following), specifically for mixtures in such a quantitative ratio that the number of terephthalate units in the polyester is 40-60% Sum of the tetephthalic and isophthalic units is. However, their ethyl, propyl, butyl, amyl or phenyl esters can also be used. If necessary, the free dicarboxylic acids can also be used as starting materials, but the reaction times are shortened by using the esterified acids.
The diote or 2-substituted 1,3-propanediols used according to the invention correspond to the general formula
EMI1.1
where R is an alkyl solid with 1 to 6 carbon atoms and R 'is hydrogen or an alkyl radical with 1 to 6 carbon atoms and the sum of the carbon atoms in R and R' together is advantageously at least 3. Examples of such alkyl radicals are methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, butyl, amyl or hexyl.
Ethylene glycol or its bis-ester is particularly suitable as a further diol that can be used.
Furthermore, 2,2-bis- [4- (/ miydroxyethoxy) -phenyl] -propane can advantageously be used as a further dihydric alcohol for the production of the polyesters.
Terephthalate isophthalate copolyester with 40 to 60 mol% of terephthalate units, based on the sum of the tetrephthalate and isophthalate units in the polyester, which contain diols of the formula in which R is methyl and R 'is hydrogen or methyl, are in common solvents like Toluo! or methyl ethyl ketone, soluble. The most preferred soluble copolyester of this type has a molar ratio of 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediol terphthalate and 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediol isophthalate of 1: 1.
Contain terephthalate or. Isoph, thialate polyester or terephthalate-isophthalate copolyester with terephthalate and isophthalate contents. in the above molar ratios of diol derivatives of the formula mentioned in which the sum of the carbon atoms in R and R 'is at least 3, these polymers also prove to be soluble in common solvents such as toluene or methyl ethyl ketone.
The preferred polyesters of this group are those which contain two 2,2-alkyl-substituted-1,3-propanediol units in a molar ratio of 60 to 40 to 40 to 60% and the above-mentioned content of 40 to 60% mol% terephthalate, based on the sum of the terephthalate and isophthalate units in the copolyester.
A single glycol (e.g. in excess) or a mixture of at least two diols can be used to produce the polyesters. When using a mixture of 1,3-propanediol with ethylene glycol, the propanediol content is expediently 35 to 65 mol% of the diol content of the mixture.
For mixtures of 1,3-propanediols of the general formula given with 2,2-bis- [4- (ss-hydroxyethoxy) phenyl] propane, the content of these diols is advantageously in the ratio of 40 to 60 to 60 to 40 mol % chosen.
If a 1,3-propanediol according to the given general formula in a mixture with 2,2-bis- [4- (sshydroxyäthoxy) -phenyl] -propane is used for the polyester formation, it is useful to use the 1,3-propanediol in the To bring excess to the reaction, while the molar amount of 2,2-bis- [4- (ss-hydroxyethoxy) phenyl] propane in the reaction mixture should preferably be 40 to 60% of the number of moles of terephthalate and isophthalate taken together. The excess of diol distills off during the polycondensation.
The following high molecular weight linear polyesters which are soluble in organic solvents are examples which can be produced by the process according to the invention:
2-propyl-1,3-propanediol terephthalate isophthalate,
2-methyl-2ethyl-1,3-propanediol tetrphthalate isophthalate,
2,2-diethyl-1,3-propanediol tetrephthalate isophthalate,
2-methyl-2-propyl-1,3-propanediol terephthalate isophthalate,
2-ethyl-2-propyl-1,3-propanediol terephthalate isophthalate,
2,2-Dipropyl-1,3-propanediol terephthalate isophthalate, also mixtures of: 2,2-diethyl-1,3-propanediol with 2-methyl-2-propyl-1,3-propanediol terephthalate isophthalate; or 2-methyl-2-ethyl-1, 3-propanediol with 2-methyl-2-propyl-1, 3-propanediol terephthalate isophthalate, etc.
If high molecular weight linear polyesters with a single diol component, in which according to the general diol formula R is methyl and R 'is hydrogen or methyl, are prepared according to the invention by reaction with terephthalic acid and isophthalic acid or their alkyl esters, soluble products are formed. However, if the terephthalate content in these polyesters makes up more than 60 mol% of terephthalate and isophthalate combined, crystalline polyesters are easily formed, which are less soluble; Furthermore, the lifespan of such solutions is short, they become cloudy over time and crystals separate out.
Soluble, high molecular weight linear polyesters each with a diol component of ethylene glycol and a 1,3-propanediol according to the general diol formula given can be prepared by the process by advantageously adding a mixture of these glycols, in which 1,3-propanediol is 35 to 65% Mol% is used therein.
Soluble, high molecular weight linear polyesters which contain 2, 2-bis- [4- (ss-hydroxyethoxy) -phenyl] propane and 1,3-propanediol of the specified diol formula as diol component can be prepared by using an appropriate diol mixture , in which the 2,2-bis [4- (ss-hydroxyethoxy) phenyl] propane is preferably 60-40 mol% of the sum of the terephthalic and isophthalic units.
If a mixture of a 1,3-propanediol according to the given general diol formula with 2,2-bis- [4- (ss hydroxyethoxy) phenyl] propane is used for the inventive production of a polyester, the 1,3-propanediol is preferably used in Excess used and the 2,2-bis [4- (jS-hydroxyäi: hoxy) -phenyl] -propane expediently in such an amount that it carries 60 to 40 mol% of the sum of the terephthalate and isophthalate units in the reaction mixture. An excess of 1,3-propanediol is removed by distilling off in vacuo during the polycondensation.
The polyester is preferably produced in a first reaction stage with heating with formation of the diolphthalates by transesterification, expediently in the presence of a catalyst or a catalyst mixture, the monohydric alcohol formed being distilled off (condensation product I.
Step). This is followed by the polycondensation, normally at elevated temperature and under vacuum, the excess of diols preferably used for the transesterification being distilled off (condensation product 2nd stage). Finally, the temperature is increased again and the reaction vessel is kept at this temperature until a linear polyester of high molecular weight which is soluble in organic solvents and whose intrinsic viscosity is at least 0.40 is formed.
For the production of copolymers, the procedure can be that a mixture of terephthalate ester with at least one diol (in excess) and a mixture of isophthalic ester with at least one diol (in excess) is subjected separately to a transesterification (1st reaction stage) and the polycondensation then carried out after mixing the diol esters obtained (2nd reaction stage). But you can also prepare two different polycondensates of the 2nd reaction stage separately and then condense the mixture of these to the end to give the desired copolyester.
To produce the polyesters, the preferred procedure is in particular that the mixture of phthalates with the diols (in excess), optionally with a catalyst, is heated to a temperature between 150 and 220 ° C. by means of a steam bath.
With stirring, a gentle stream of oxygen-free nitrogen is passed through the reaction mixture at atmospheric pressure. ng passed, the monohydric alcohol formed by the esterification being distilled off.
After about the theoretical amount of alcohol (e.g.
Methanol, when using methyl esters) is distilled off, the bath temperature is increased further to 220 to 250 ° C. and the pressure is slowly brought to below 15 torr, preferably to below 1 torr, while the excess of diol and the cleaved diol are distilled off with polycondensation. By further heating the reaction mixture to about 280 ° C., polycondensation takes place to the desired degree.

In addition to toluene or methyl ethyl ketone, these polyesters are also soluble in xylene, methyl isobutyl ketone, cyclohexanone, dioxane, nitroparaffins such as 2-nitropropane, and in chlorinated solvents such as tetrachloroethane, trichloroethane, ethylene dichloride or chloroform. These polyesters are also soluble in mixtures of the solvents mentioned; z. B. is advantageously used a mixture of toluene, xylene and a ketone, such as methyl ethyl ketone.
While the polyesters prepared by the process according to the invention can generally be used without further additives, they can be used for special purposes, as such or in solution, with resins, dyes, pigments, plasticizers, etc., e.g. B. in mills or kneaders.
