<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Pupin coil set In pupin coil boxes, the coils must be arranged as close together as possible in order to save space. In order to prevent undesired inductive and capacitive mutual interference between the different lines, the coils must be shielded from one another. It has been shown that the magnetic scattering in ferrite core coils is so small that shielding by magnetic material is not necessary, provided that a certain minimum distance is maintained between the coils. Static shielding of the coils can be achieved using sheet metal made of non-magnetic material.
In known designs of coil sets, the shielding was attached in the form of so-called caps placed around the coils. These caps were partly placed on the ground and partly isolated from it. Coil boxes with unshielded coils have also become known, in which the coil sets are arranged in divided plastic housings in such a way that the axes of two adjacent coils are perpendicular to one another. In this construction, however, the savings in shielding are bought with an increased space requirement.
The patent proprietor has now recognized that, despite the space-saving arrangement of the coils, adequate shielding can be achieved in a simpler way than before. The purpose of the invention is thus to simplify the construction of a coil set while complying with the strict regulations required for sets of this type with regard to crosstalk.
The invention relates to a Pupin coil set with ferrite core coils which are held in an unshielded plastic housing in such a way that their axes coincide. This set of coils is characterized by shields attached between the coils, which are formed from plates made of non-magnetic, but conductive material, arranged perpendicular to the axis.
The invention is explained below using an exemplary embodiment.
Fig. 1 shows the side view of a coil set, in which part of the plastic housing has been cut away. FIG. 2 shows a cross section through the coil set shown in FIG. 1.
The coils 1 each consist in a known manner of a cup-shaped ferrite core in which a winding is enclosed. The different parts of the core are glued together and the winding ends 2 are led out of the openings 3. The coils are placed in a plastic housing in such a way that their axes coincide. This housing has the shape of a trough 4, in the bottom of which soldering lugs 9 are pressed. The wires 2 are connected to each of the shorter end of these eyelets, and each of their longer end is connected directly or indirectly to the wires of the outgoing cables. The coils are pressed into the tub by suitably pre-tensioned metal strips 5 and thus held in place.
The coils are shielded from one another with the aid of aluminum plates 6. Each of these aluminum plates is insulated from the adjacent coil cores with the aid of the hard paper plates 7. If the coil sets are to be strung together, a shielding plate must be attached to at least one end of one of the troughs and the troughs must be arranged in such a way that at their abutting ends at least one shielding plate is arranged between the two adjacent coils at the end of each trough.
The shielding plates 6 and the insulating plates 7 are secured against falling out of the tub by a plastic strip 8 pulled through under the metal strips 5.
The shield plates are not connected to ground because it has been shown. that because of the strictly symmetrical structure of the cable cores, these plates are connected to earth in terms of alternating currents even without special measures. In order to achieve the required high attenuation values between the coils, it is necessary to choose the shielding plates thick enough. As tests have shown, up to a thickness of approx. 4 mm, an improvement in the damping is associated with increasing thickness, so that increasing it beyond 4 mm is of no use.
The insulation between the shielding plates and the coils also cause a small one
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Improvement 'which is presumably due to the reduction in capacitance due to the dielectric effect of the insulating layer.
Since, in the case of coil sets arranged in parallel, the distance between the different sets of associated coils is greater than the distance between two adjacent coils of the same set, the required high attenuation values between the coils can - as has been shown - be achieved in the former case even without shielding. When assembling sets of coils of the type described to form packs, no further shielding measures have to be taken to shield the sets of coils from one another.
Of course, the invention is not bound to the exemplary embodiment. For example, it is conceivable to arrange the coils in tubes instead of troughs or not to fix the loosens directly to the plastic housing. It is of course also possible to do without the solder lugs altogether. If a somewhat poorer value for the crosstalk attenuation can be accepted, the insulating plates between the coils and the shielding plates can also be dispensed with.
