Flange connection for high vacuum systems, preferably large dimensions The present invention relates to a flange connection for high vacuum systems, predominantly large dimensions, in which a wire is stretched as a metal seal on a projection on one of the flanges between the flanges connected to the housing parts of the system.
At the moment, flange connections in high vacuum systems of large dimensions are mainly designed as two paragraph flanges connected to the housing parts of the system, which clamp a metal seal in the form of a wire wound on the projection of a flange. In this case, the object has a correspondingly dimensioned ring recess which receives the projection of the first flange and serves as a guide (fitting surface) for it.
Sometimes the two flanges are provided with ring grooves that face each other and accommodate a stationary ring that serves as a mandrel to stretch the sealing wire (see, for example, WR Wheeler, Theory and application of metal gasket seals, Transactions of the lOth National Vacuum Symposium , 1964, pp 159-165, USA).
There are constructions in which the projection carrying the wire seal is a cone with a bevel, which corresponds to a cone recess in the mating flange.
However, all existing flange connections have the disadvantage that the flanges have to be machined with high precision, since otherwise displacements and misalignments occur which greatly impair the reliability of the seal. Such high demands on the manufacturing tolerances make it difficult to manufacture flange connections with metal seals for large passage cross-sections. These difficulties are particularly great if the flange connection does not have a round passage cross-section and is therefore to be processed on milling machines.
The need to process the mating surfaces precisely and to strictly adhere to the prescribed design of the flange makes any mistake in the plane of contact inadmissible.
It is the aim of the present invention to overcome this drawback.
The invention is based on the object of developing a flange connection that remains reliable even when there are repeated heating and cooling during operation and where no high demands are made on manufacturing accuracy. This is because the flange connection should not have any mating surfaces and should guarantee a high level of tightness even with minor errors in the dimensioning of the flanges.
The object is achieved by a flange connection, which is characterized in that the projection can be lowered and when pulling together the flanges gives way.
It is advantageous to design the projection in the form of a non-closed ring which is spread by a wedge and which, supported on assembly supports, protrudes from the flange recess. In such a solution, a projection for clamping the sealing wire is also available when there are no precisely machined mating surfaces. This jump cannot prevent the flanges from contracting and enables the flange connection to be installed in any installation position.
In the case of flange connections with a round passage cross-section, it is advantageous to design the retractable projection in the form of several pins which, in turn, protrude from the recesses of the flange, supported on assembly supports. In this solution, the sealing wire is routed in a broken line so that the flange connection produced can have any shape and dimensions.
The present invention enables the production of high and maximum vacuum systems with flange connections, which can have any contour design and any dimensions and remain reliable at temperatures of up to 450 C and above.
The subject of the invention is explained in more detail below using some exemplary embodiments with reference to the drawing. 1 shows the cross section of an embodiment of the flange connection according to the invention in the assembled but not tensioned state, FIG. 2 the cross section of the flange connection with a rectangular cross section in the assembled but not tensioned state, FIG. 3 the section III-III according to FIG . 1.
As can be seen in FIG. 1, the flanges 1, 2 of the detachable high vacuum flange connection have bores 3 for receiving the clamping screws 4. The lower flange 1 has a ring recess 5 in which a slotted ring 7 is arranged on mounting supports 6. The ring 7 forms a projection which yields when the flanges 1, 2 are drawn together.
The ring 7 has several threaded bores 8 into which the supports 6 are screwed. In order to achieve good contact with the flange body, the ring is spread with a wedge.
The sealing wire is tensioned on the assembly projection which is formed by the ring 7.
In the case of flange connections with rounded flange collars 10, 11 (FIG. 2), the retractable projection is formed by several pins 12 which, supported on assembly supports 6, protrude from the recesses 13 of the flange 10.
When assembling the flange connection with a rounded outline, the non-closed ring 7 (Fig. 1) is supported in the ring recess 5 of the flange 1 on assembly 6 and spread with a wedge. The sealing wire 9 is stretched on the protrusion that results. The assembly is then removed. The ring 7 is held by the stretched wire 9 due to friction on the flange.
Now the flanges 2, 1 are approached, the clamping screws 4 are inserted into the holes 3 and they are tightened carefully, the seal 9 being compressed. With the progressive contraction of the flange, the ring 7 gradually moves into the annular groove 5 of the flange collar 1. It holds the wire in the correct position, but does not prevent the flanges from approaching, since the friction between ring 7 and flange 1 is much smaller than the total force developed by the tensioning screws 4.
A flange connection with a round shape is installed in the same way. The only difference is that instead of the retractable ring, several retractable pins 12 (Fig. 1) occur, which are resting on mounting supports, initially protrude from the recesses 13 above the sealing surface by the required measure. The pins 12 are arranged at the points where a curvature (bend) of the sealing wire is desired (FIG. 3), or where an excessive displacement of the sealing wire 9, for example on long straight strands, is to be prevented.
The pins 12 (Fig. 1, 2) are hollow and have an internal thread for screwing in the mounting brackets 6. After tensioning the sealing wire 9, the props are removed 6. The pins 12, however, retain their position because they are in holes through tensioned wire be tilted and held in it by friction. In addition, they give in to the pressure that increases as the flanges are tightened and move into the recesses 13. The sealing wire 9 is compressed and the connection is thereby sealed.
The application of the construction described in high vacuum systems ensures a high level of tightness and reliability of the flange connections and allows multiple assembly and disassembly of the same. The investigations on a round flange connection of this type with a retractable ring protrusion of 16 mm through-section showed that the flange connection remains completely tight with both copper and nickel wire gaskets even after 20 times heating up to 450 ° C and subsequent repeated heating to 600 ° C.
A leak was not found in any test, although the connection was tested both in the hot and in the cold state after each heating-cooling game with a helium leak detector of 3.10-7 1 u / s sensitivity using the helium chamber method. During investigations, the flanges were deliberately heated unevenly at temperature gradients of up to 250 C at two opposite points on the connection.
The flange connection passed this test with equal success. The same tests were also carried out on flange connections with a rectangular outline and various dimensions up to 3000 x 1500 mm and with retractable pins. There were also no leaks.
