Method and device for the production of heat-shrinkable tubing
The present invention is concerned with the treatment of plastic articles in order to give them certain memory properties and in particular with hoses which are made of plastics and which maintain their dimensions under normal temperature conditions, but which change their shape when heated to a critical temperature and return to their original shape and dimensions prior to treatment.
The materials to which the invention relates include selected polymers from the group consisting of 1. The crystalline polymers which have elastomeric properties either at or above their crystalline melting range; H. thermoplastic polymers and copolymers such as polytetrafluoroethylene, high molecular weight polypropylene and polyethylene and mixtures of elastomeric and crystalline polymers and copolymers of elastomeric and crystalline polymers etc. and 2. made of crystalline polymers and copolymers, including polyolefins such as polyethylene and polypropylene, Vinyls such as polyvinyl chlorine and polyvinyl acetate and their CorPolymers, polyamides, etc.
exists, which are cross-linked by chemical methods or by irradiation with high-energy electrons or ionizing the radiation.
It has been found that in the case of the above-mentioned irradiated crystalline polymers, the elastic modulus decreases with increasing temperature up to the crystalline melting point, and that above this temperature the elastic modulus increases in accordance with the elasticity theory of rubber-like materials.
In the case of polyethylene, for example, the modulus of elasticity falls below 1150 C (usual melting point, the exact melting point depends on the molecular weight) with increasing temperature; above this temperature it increases again in accordance with the elasticity theory of rubber-like materials, with the exception of very high degrees of Cross-linking, where it then behaves in accordance with a glass-like structure. After considerable exposure, z. B.
Polyethylene at room temperature is completely amorphous and brittle with glass-like characteristics. Nevertheless, as has been shown for polyethylene with a relatively low radiation dose, the increase in the modulus of elasticity above about 1150 ° C. is modest. An article explaining and explaining this theory appeared in the Proceedings of the Royal Society of London Series A 218, 1963, written by A. Charlesby and N. H. Hancock.
With increasing irradiation there is an increase in the modulus of elasticity and a correspondingly increased stiffness of the material. It has also been found that extruded crystalline polymers which are irradiated exhibit some degree of shrinkage. This occurs when the material is e.g. B. is extruded in the form of rods or tubes and then pulled down to size by train or other shear forces that are exerted on the rod or tube. The tension introduces tensions into the material, which will show a contraction after heating above the crystalline melting temperature and subsequent cooling, caused by the release of the tensions. The result is an undesirable degree of axial or longitudinal shrinkage.
If the crystalline polymers are extruded to measure without tension or longitudinal stresses to reduce the diameter, only negligibly small stresses are applied to the material. When heated above the crystalline melting point and then cooled, the material will show only very little or no contraction at all and the corresponding axial shrinkage is greatly reduced. In this essentially unstretched state, the crystalline polymer is more pliable and requires a smaller radiation dose. Nevertheless, care must be taken that the
Hose is not stretched when passing through the facility. Therefore, the tension must be reduced to a negligible level.
It is a purpose of this invention to provide a new method of making heat shrinkable tubing from crystalline or cross-linked crystalline polymeric material.
The method according to the invention is characterized in that the hose is guided through a cavity, that the hose is heated to a temperature which is at least equal to the crystalline smoldering temperature, that a pressure difference is applied between the inside and the outside of the hose , wherein this pressure difference is sufficient to expand the hose to the diameter to be achieved while the hose material is at least at its crystalline melting temperature, and that the hose is cooled to a temperature below the crystalline melting temperature, while the pressure difference is further maintained until the Hose is brought to the widened diameter to be achieved.
The inventive devices for performing this method are characterized by a heating chamber, a cooling chamber adjoining the heating chamber, a tube which has an inlet and an outlet end and is arranged inside the heating chamber and cooling chamber, means for conveying the hose through the Tube, and means for applying pressure to the interior of the tube while the tube is being conveyed through the tube.
The invention is described in more detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings, for example, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view of the \ device for performing the method and
Figure 2 shows a section of Figure 1 along line 2-2.
The device for performing the method is explained in FIG. 1 and the method is described with reference to the device. The material is first extruded in a conventional extruder with a special nozzle, this nozzle depriving the hose of any orientation of the structure which is known to be in the material due to the shear forces, the tension, etc. during the extrusion. This is achieved in that the nozzle is designed in such a way that the extruded hose already leaves the extrusion nozzle with the final dimension and therefore no longitudinal pull is applied to the hose in order to bring it to size.
As a result, only negligibly small longitudinal loads are in fact brought into the material. After the irradiation, the tube is now ready for processing in the device as shown in FIG. Although the extrusion technique described above is very advantageous for use with the invention, the invention is in no way limited to this extrusion technique and can also be used to advantage when the extrusion process normally known as extrusion is used, the extrusion nozzle being larger as the final tube diameter and the tube is drawn down to the final diameter as part of the extrusion process.
Fig. 1 shows a coil 1 made of unexpanded tube 2 from z. B. irradiated polyethylene. The end of the hose is inside! a flat band 4 is inserted into the inlet socket 3. The band 4 is unwound from a reel 4a and serves as a conveyor belt which carries the hose as it passes through the device in such a way that no axial tension is exerted on the hose 2. The conveyor belt 4 is a flat belt which is bent over at the inlet nozzle of a metal tube or mold 5 and thus forms a cylindrical lining for the tube 5, which carries the plastic tube 2 inside the belt 4. The band 4 can consist of a thin metal foil, a plastic band with an insert, a fabric band, a coated elastomer band or a similar material.
The requirement for use is that the material can withstand the temperature of the heating medium. The tape 4 is made in the shape of a cylinder around the hose 2 and is drawn through the metal tube 5 which extends through the whole device, i.e. H. through the heating part 6, the cooling part 7 and the washing or cleaning part 8. At the end of the cleaning part, the hose 2 can sink and is wound up to form the spool 10. The spool can be wound on a flat disk 11 which is rotated by a motor 12.
On leaving the tube 5 at the exit end 15 of the apparatus, the tape is taken up by a take-up reel 16 which is driven by the motor 17 at an appropriate speed. The band can be designed in the form of an endless band or in the form of a long band shown here, which is unwound from the reel 4a and wound onto a second reel 16 at the end of the run.
In the heating part, the inlet nozzle is pointed for the entry of the hose 2 and the band 4 and to facilitate the folding of the band 4 around the hose 2. The hose 2 then goes with its cylindrically shaped conveyor belt into the metal tube 5, which can be perforated so that the fuel oil 20, or any other suitable heating means, can penetrate into the pipe 5 for a more efficient heat transfer. The heating part 6 contains the metal pipe 5 around which a cylinder 21 is arranged in such a way that a cavity around the pipe 5 allows the entry and passage of the heating oil or another suitable liquid.
The oil is heated in the container 22 and sucked in from here with the pump 23 and then pressed through the pipe 24 into the cylinder 21, where it circulates around the pipe 5 and thus heats this and the hose located therein. As indicated, some of the oil enters the tube 5 through the perforation openings 25 and thus accelerates the heating.
After flowing into the cylinder 21, the heated oil is moved further by the pump 23 and leaves the cylinder 21 through the pipe 26 and flows back into the container 22, where it is heated again.
The contents of the container are kept at the correct temperature by a suitable thermostatic control. The outer cylinder 30 is attached around the cylinder 21. A cavity 31 between the cylinders 30 and 21 is filled with insulating material.
The pipe 5 continues into the cooling part 7. In the drawing, part of the pipe 5 is freely visible in the air in the space between the heating part 6 and the cooling part 7 and between the cooling part 7 and the cleaning part 8. However, this is not essential and serves to emphasize the separation of the various stages of this procedure in the explanation. In the cooling part 7, the cooling water is pumped into the inlet 35 and leaves the cooling part at the outlet 36. It should be emphasized at this point that the inner diameter of the tube 5 is less than the thickness of the band 4 approximately the desired outer diameter on which the hose 2 in Heating part was expanded, corresponds and that the same diameter will also hold in the heating part 6 go.
The diameter can be slightly reduced in the cooling part 7 and this slightly reduced diameter is maintained in the cleaning part 8 until both the expanded plastic hose and the conveyor belt leave the output part 15.
When certain hot plastics are cooled, they can shrink, but because the expanded tube 2 cannot shrink longitudinally, or the longitudinal shrinkage is greatly reduced thanks to the action of the band 4, the cooling causes the inner and outer diameter of the expanded tube to shrink Cooling space 7. The oil, which is pumped into the heating cylinder 21, is heated to a temperature (examples of which follow) which is sufficient to heat the plastic tube above the crystalline melting temperature, or more precisely, substantially above the temperature at which polyethylene or any plastic of the elastomeric crystalline polymer class changes from crystalline to fully amorphous and becomes elastomeric.
The crystalline melting temperature in this case can be defined as the temperature at which the polymer changes from the partially crystalline to the completely amorphous state.
The end of the hose 2 is connected via a mouthpiece 41 to a pump 40 which generates air pressure. The other end of the hose is closed so that the air pressure can be kept at the desired pressure. The pressure that is applied corresponds to the pressure that is necessary to expand the hose with a certain diameter to the desired diameter while the material in the heating part is heated to the crystalline melting temperature. From the characteristics of irradiated polyethylene at elevated temperature, it can be seen that the modulus of elasticity decreases with increasing temperature until the crystalline melting temperature is reached, after which the modulus of elasticity increases again slightly.
So the minimum force needed to expand the tube is the force that must be used to expand the tube at its crystalline melting temperature. In order to ensure that the expansion occurs to a sufficient extent to bring the hose up to the inner diameter of the tube or the mold 5 less the thickness of the band, a greater force should be applied. The expansion of the plastic tube 2 will now occur as the tube 2 passes through the mold 5, namely in the heating part 6 at approximately the crystalline melting temperature, at which point the tube finally expands to the predetermined diameter and is held at this diameter by the air pressure in the tube while the hose from the heating part 7 to the cooling part 8 continues.
As soon as the expanded tube has cooled from the elevated temperature to the crystalline melting temperature and, due to the crystalline melting temperature, where crystals begin to form, comes to the state where it finally reaches the partially crystalline state at room temperature, the expanded tube will retain its expanded diameter . The plastic hose 2 then passes from the cooling part 7 to the cleaning part 8, where it is rinsed several times with water in order to remove all the heating oil. The expanded tube then slides together with its conveyor belt 4 through the output end 15, the belt being rolled up on the take-up reel 16 and the tube being able to be wound into a reel 10 on a table 11 which is rotated by a motor 12.
The rotation of the table 11 is slow and such that no tension is exerted on the expanded tube 2; rather, the hose itself can approximately form a coil on the table 11.
The used tape can be provided with patterns which are transferred to the hose 2 when the hose is expanded to the predetermined diameter which is reached in the heating part 6.
It is desirable to keep the movement of the hose with the belt through the device at a constant speed in order to avoid any possibility of tensile stress being applied to the hose 2.
The exemplary embodiments explain the invention, but the invention is of course not restricted to these examples.
Example I.
In this case, a polyethylene tube is used, which was extruded tension-free using a special nozzle, as described above. The dimensions of the tube were 2.77 + 0.05 mm inside diameter with 0.43 + 0.05 mm wall thickness and the tube was irradiated with a dose of 20 megarads. The perforated mold, which is denoted by no. 5 in FIG. 1, had an inside diameter of 0.66 mm and the oil bath was heated to 1490.degree. The tape used was 19 mm (3/1 ") wide siliconized fiberglass tape. The plastic tube with the tape bent around it was inserted into the device, pulled through the machine, and the tape was attached to the take-up spool.
The end of the hose coming out of the device was now connected to the air supply, which can be adjusted to the desired pressure. In this case, for this hose dimension, a pressure of 0.35 atm was used. The hose was expanded to a finished internal diameter of 4.85-4.98 mm at a throughput speed of 6.1 m / min. After the finished product had been heated to 1380 ° C., an average longitudinal shrinkage of 3% with an internal diameter of 2.77-2.82 mm resulted.
Example II
In this case, a polyvinyl tube was used, which was extruded without tension using a special nozzle. The dimensions of the tube were 356 + 0.08 mm inside diameter with a wall thickness of 0 48 + 0.08 mm and the tube was irradiated with a dose of 7 megarads. The perforated mold, which is designated with no. 5 in FIG. 1, had an inner diameter of 6.5 mm and the oil bath was heated to 1210.degree. A 19 mm (8/4 ") wide siliconized glass fiber tape was used as the tape. The hose was introduced into the device in the same way as described above and connected to the compressed air.
In this case a pressure of 0.18 atm was used and the line speed was 8 m / min with a finished inner diameter of 5.15-5.33 mm. After the finished product had been heated to 1210 C, an average longitudinal shrinkage of 3% was found for a
Inner diameter of 3.7-3.8 mm.

In this case, a polyethylene tube was used which was extruded in the manner mentioned above without tension. The dimensions of the tube were 9 0 + 0 08 mm inside diameter with a wall thickness of 1.07 1 0.08 mm and the radiation dose was 20 megarads. The perforated mold had an inside diameter of 22.1 mm and the temperature of the oil bath was 1630 C. A siliconized fiberglass tape about 69 mm wide was used as the tape. The hose was inserted into the device in the same way as described above and connected to the compressed air.
In this case the pressure used was 0.21 atm with a line speed of 7.6 m / min and a finished inner diameter of 19-19.3 mm. After the finished product had been heated to 1380 ° C., an average longitudinal shrinkage of 3% with an internal diameter of 9.1-9.15 mm resulted.
