Corona discharge unit for photoelectrostatic reproduction devices The invention relates to a corona discharge unit for photoelectrostatic reproduction devices, such as the one in Swiss patent no. 423 479 is described ben, which has an electrically conductive base plate and a pair of insulating plates attached to opposite sides of the latter at right angles, between which corona discharge wires are arranged, which were in the Ab from each other and run parallel to each other in a plane at a distance from the base plate .
The corona discharge unit according to the invention is characterized in that it has an electrically conducting screen with two elongated, electrically conductive side parts and an open surface that accommodates the stabilization grid, which screen is attached with its end parts to the insulating plates and from both the base plate and the Corona discharge wires is electrically isolated.
An exemplary embodiment of the subject matter of the invention is shown in the drawing. It shows: FIG. 1 a perspective view of the corona discharge unit with parts pulled apart, FIG. 2 a cross section of the electrical terminal. 1 shows that the corona discharge unit has a rectangular base plate 10 made of an electrically conductive material, for example metal, on which holding stanchions 11 and 12 for the wires with the aid of screws 13 and 14 at the opposite ends are attached. The terminal blocks 11, 12 are made of an electrically insulating material.
The block 11 carries a power connection terminal block 15 (FIG. 2).
From FIG. 2 it can be seen that this block consists of an outer capsule 16 made of insulating material, which is equipped with a slot 17 for receiving the terminal strip 18 (FIG. 1). A graphite block 19, which is electrically connected to a power cable 20, lies within the capsule 16 next to the slot 17, specifically in such a position that it rests on the surface of the terminal strip 18 and thus forms an electrical contact.
The graphite block 19 is held with the surface of the terminal strip 18 by the tension of the retaining springs 21 within the terminal block 15 in firm contact.
According to FIG. 1, the terminal strip 18 is attached to the terminal block 11 by means of screws 22 and covered by an insulated terminal block cover 23, which is held in the corresponding position by screws 24. The terminal block cover 23 also holds the terminal block 15 in the correct position. The coaxial power cable 20 is connected to a high-voltage direct current source, not illustrated. The one ends of corona discharge wires 23 are held in slots 26 in the end block 12 and held therein by tensioning screws 27.
The other ends of the corona discharge wires 25 are connected to the terminal strip 18 and held under tension by springs 28.
A stabilization grid set 30 has inclined, sheet metal side walls 31 and an open top which carries a stabilization grid 32, which consists of two sets of parallel metal wires which are at an angle between about 90 and about 95 to each other and at angles of at least approx. 45 in with respect to the lengths of the corona discharge wires 25 are attached. The stabilization grid 30 is located in a parallel plane at a distance from the plane of the corona discharge wires 25, which in turn are attached at a certain distance from the base plate 10.
This diagonal arrangement of the wires of the stabilizing grid 32 is advantageous in that there is no possibility that an edge of a copy sheet, which should be accidentally dropped when it is moved over the grid, is caught by the grid or that it penetrates the grid and comes into contact with the corona discharge wires 25 below the grid.
The stabilization grid set 30 is attached to the insulating blocks 11, 12 by means of screws 33 and is electrically isolated from the corona discharge wires 25, from their electrical connections and from the base plate 10. The stabilization grid set 30 is grounded via a resistor (not shown) and collects an electrical charge from the corona discharge which is emitted by the corona discharge wires 25 during operation of the corona discharge unit. The base plate 10 is placed directly on earth.
When operating the device for photoelectrostatic reproduction of images, in which the described corona discharge unit is installed, a photoelectrostatic sheet with its photoelectrostatic layer is directed downwards through a vacuum or suction support plate over the corona discharge unit , the layer being charged and then exposed in an optical image plane to the optical image of the object that is to be reproduced.
As mentioned, the stabilization grid consists of two sets of parallel wires which are arranged at an angle to one another. The aforementioned angular position offers two advantages. The first of these advantages is the increase in the uniformity of the electrostatic charge which is applied to the surface of a photoelectrostatic sheet that is guided over the corona discharge system with the aid of the vacuum or suction support plate.
This uniformity arises from the fact that, with the wires arranged at an angle, no single wire can cast a continuous shadow on the photoelectrostatic sheet when it moves over the corona discharge system. The second of these advantages results from the fact that the angular position of the stabilization grid prevents a sheet that is accidentally dropped from the vacuum or suction support plate due to a malfunction in the device from coming into contact with the high-voltage wires of the corona discharge system, which are fragile due to their small diameter.
In this way, the angular position of the wires of the stabilization grid eliminates the risk of fire due to dangerous electrical short circuits and the risk of possible damage to the corona discharge grid.
The arrangement of the corona discharge unit is arranged in the mentioned reproduction device in the work path of the vacuum or suction support plate, namely between the storage container and the optical image plane, with its stabilization grid on the top, so that the corona discharge of the device is directed upwards is.
This corona discharge system is fed by the electrical system of the device when the leading edge of the vacuum or suction pressure plate, wel che a photoelectrostatic sheet on its way from above the container for the sheets to the optical plane of the device, a point above the The leading edge of the corona discharge system is sufficient.
When a photoelectrostatic sheet is carried by the suction support plate, with the photoelectrostatic layer of the sheet facing downwards, out of the container into the optical image plane, this sheet wanders above the corona discharge system, with the surfaces of its photoelectrostatic layer on that of the suction support plate opposite side absorb an electrostatic charge. The suction support plate is carried above the corona discharge system in a plane which is parallel to the plane of its corona radiation wires.
The corona is switched on when the leading edge of the photoelectrostatic sheet approaches the rear edge of the corona, and the corona is switched off when the rear edge of the sheet is a point above the leading edge of the corona. Unloading facility reached. The activation and deactivation of the corona discharge system are automatically controlled, monitored and timed by the electrical system of the device.
In the embodiment of the device, which is intended for the use of electrostatic copy sheets, interfaces of limited conductivity are present, the width of the electron radiation area of the corona discharge system transversely to the direction of the travel path of the photoelectrostatic sheet is desirable but not necessary maneuverable as large as the width of the electrostatic image that is to be reproduced,
by choosing the length of the corona discharge system accordingly. This electron emission area is the open area on the screen of the device that carries the stabilization grid. Similarly, the area of the photoelectrostatic sheet in the direction of travel of the suction support plate exposed to the electron radiation is desirably, but not necessarily limited to the length of the electrostatic image to be reproduced.
This is accomplished by synchronizing the period of time during which the corona discharge system emits electrons with the forward movement of the photoelectrostatic sheet. In this way, the corona discharge system is applied to high voltage at the moment in which the front edge of the image area of the photoelectrostatic sheet reaches the rear edge of the electron emission area, and the corona discharge system is switched off at the moment in which the rear edge of the image area reaches the rear edge of the electron emission area.
In this way, only the surface of the photoelectrostatic sheet which is to receive a latent electrostatic image receives a full electrostatic charge, while the edges of the sheet remain relatively uncharged. This reduces the residual electrostatic charge to a minimum value which remains in the interfaces at the point in time when the electrostatic image is tinted or colored. As a result, the tendency of the rest of the pigment to stick to the edge surfaces is reduced to a minimum, since this sticking would give the edge surfaces a dirty appearance.
