Device for developing electrophotographic layers The invention relates to a device for developing electrophotographic layers by means of a powdery mixture of magnetizable particles, in particular iron filings, and electroscopic toner particles, with an open container for the developing powder,
one with its circumference at least partially immersed in: the drum made of non-magnetic material, guide means outside the container for the touching past of the electrophotographic layer on the rotating drum and a magnetic system arranged inside the drum,
which attracts the developing powder from the container to the rotating drum and holds it in place at least up to the point of contact between the drum and the electrophotographic layer.
Of the various possibilities for developing an exposed electrophotographic layer, that of applying a mixture of an electrophotographic toner with iron filings by means of a magnetic system, the so-called magnetic brush, has proven to be particularly economical. Older facilities of this type consist of a system of electrical:
excited magnets or permanent magnets, often a four-pole version wind selected, in which two pairs of magnets of opposite polarity are arranged rotated by 90 about a common shaft. When the common shaft rotates, the individual magnets or magnetic rods alternately dip into a container with developing powder, the powder mixture remaining on the magnetic brush according to the magnetic field lines.
This arrangement has the disadvantage that although the toner: at the following development point is at least partially released to the electrophotographic layer to be developed, the iron filings stick to the magnets and thus the absorption of unused toner mixture when immersed again the magnet rods make it difficult to get into the developing powder.
Mechanical scrapers have proven to be insufficiently effective, which is why a known device individually reverses the polarity of the magnets of the magnetic brush by means of a commutator after the development point.
Apart from the high cost of this device, the unevenness of the magnetic fields over the circumference of the magnetic brush is disadvantageous because uneven welts tend to form on the developed electrophotographic layer.
According to a further known device, this is avoided by selecting the direction of rotation of the magnetic brush opposite to the transport direction of the electrophotographic layer. However, this means that the drive power of the transport device, but also that of the magnetic brush, must be increased significantly. Here, too, it is necessary to erect the iron filings beforehand, which is provided by an additional erecting magnet, which has to be continuously reversed.
In order to avoid direct contact between the magnetic roller and the developing powder, a device has therefore become known which protective layers made of non-magnetic material between the magnetic roller and:
turn on the guides for the developing powder. The developing powder is then transported on the surface of the protective layers by the magnetic forces of the rotating magnets of the magnetic roller from the container to the development site and there is brought into contact with the electrophotographic layer.
If the protective layer is designed in such a way that it completely surrounds the magnetic roller and is immersed in the available developing powder, the rotating magnetic roller takes new developing powder with it when the protective layer is removed from the storage container and carries it with it: the used powder on its side back into the container, the used powder being stripped from the protective layer by the powder in stock.
However, the development powder must be leveled out from time to time, which must be carried out by hand or, according to a known device, by a special shaking device. The problem, the formation of welts as a result of the inhomogeneity of the magnetic fields on the surface of the magnets or the protective layers, has not yet been solved with these devices either.
In order to improve the homogeneity or develop electrophotographic layers, a device was therefore known which not only allows the magnetic roller but also the protective layer surrounding the roller, which has the shape of a hollow cylinder, to rotate at different speeds. However, this represents a considerable effort in terms of bearings, drive power for the now required drive of two rollers or cylinders and the necessary reduction gear.
The device according to the invention avoids these disadvantages and is characterized in that the magnetic system: is rotatably mounted or rotatably adjustable and fixable and. Consists of a bar made of magnetically soft material, which only over part of its circumference in the longitudinal direction Permanent magnets of alternating polarity carries, the position of the bar is fixed at least during operation so that its magnetic pole-free circumferential area faces away from the point of contact of the drum with the electro-photographic layer.
In the following the invention is explained in more detail with reference to an embodiment shown in the drawing; 1 shows a diagrammatic representation of the device according to the invention, FIG. 2 shows a cross section through the device of FIG. 1, FIG. 3 shows a detail from FIG. 2, FIG. 4 shows a longitudinal section through a never rotating drum and the magnet system.
According to FIGS. 1 and 2, the machine consists of an actual development unit with a rotating drum 3 made of non-magnetic material (e.g. aluminum, plastic, etc.), a magnetic system 4 arranged inside the drum and a counter-pressure plate 5 .
The motor-driven drum 3 dips with part of its circumference into a container 2 for developing powder (empty in FIG. 1), in which a mixing reel 1, consisting of individual rods 10 and clamping disks 11 and 11 'on both sides, which is rotatably mounted in lateral supports, only one of which is shown in the form of a plate 12.
The magnetic system 4 is composed of a bar 20 made of magnetically soft material with a rectangular, preferably square cross-section, on whose longitudinal surfaces powerful permanent magnets 21, 22 and 23 are arranged so that the opposing magnets 21 and 23 have the same polarity on their outside:
have, while the polarity of the intermediate permanent magnet 22 is reversed. The permanent magnets can have the rectangular cross-sectional shape shown here, but can also be shaped differently who the, z. B. with a rounded surface.
The bar can also have a polygonal cross-section instead of a rectangular one or consist of a rod with permanent magnets inserted.
The magnetic axes of the permanent magnets are preferably perpendicular to the corresponding upper surface of the bar and intersect in the common axis of the magnetic system (FIG. 3).
The magnet system 4 or its bar 20 is mounted at one end by means of a pin 13a in one of the lateral supports (plate 12) so that it can be rigidly or rotationally adjusted, although, as shown in FIGS. 2 and 3, the FIGS Fig. 1 and 2 a drawn position is particularly favorable. The surface carrying the central permanent magnet 22 and the free surface of the beam 20 are approximately parallel to the pressure plate 5.
The locking of the pin 13a and thus the bar 20 tra lowing the magnet system is carried out by means of a nut 14, where the adjustment can be made by actuating a lever 15 against the adjustment.
A photoelectric layer 7 to be developed is pushed between the pressure plate 5 and the rotating drum 3 in the direction of the arrow by means of a pair of rollers 16 and 17. A sealing flap 6 prevents developing powder from falling out of the drum space or its penetration into other parts of the device.
Storage and drive of the magnetic system or the rotating drum are ersicht from Fig. 4 Lich. The magnetic system, of which the bar 20 and the permanent magnets 21 and 23 are visible here, is, as already mentioned, mounted on one side by means of the pin 13a in the side plate 12. The magnetic system can be adjusted or fixed by tightening the nut 14 by means of the lever 15.
That: the other end of the beam 20 is rotatably ge superimposed by means of a two th pin 13b in a mounted inside the rotating drum 3 bearing bush 43. The rotating drum, for its part, is rotatably mounted on one side by means of a bearing bushing 42 on the support pin 13a of the magnet system and at its other end by means of a bearing pin 41 in the lateral attachment 12 '.
A belt pulley 40, which is driven by means of a motor 47 via a drive belt 46 and a belt pulley 45, is pulled onto the bearing journal 41.
The functioning of the device according to the invention is described in more detail below with reference to FIG. The developing powder 8 is pushed through the mixing and transport reel 1 to the upper right edge of the container 2 and there by the action: the magnetic field lines of the permanent magnets 21 and 22 on the iron filings of the development mixture drawn to the surface of the drum 3 and from ; this is transported to the development center in the direction of rotation shown
According to Fig. 3, the iron filings at the receiving point 30 of the developing powder below the permanent magnet 21 due to the magnetic scattering lines present here in a brush-like manner and according to the magnetic axis N of the magnet 21 perpendicular to the drum, which allows the developing powder to be particularly well absorbed Drum guaranteed.
With further rotation of the drum 3 in the counterclockwise direction, the iron filings wander according to the magnetic equipotential field lines 31 to briefly straighten up again like a brush at the point 32, opposite: the permanent magnet 22, according to its magnetic axis 5. At this point, the development of the electrophotographic layer 7 is carried out with advantage.
As the drum 3 continues to rotate, the iron filings, which have meanwhile given some of their electroscopic toner particles to the electrophotographic layer, again lie around the field lines 33 at point 34 along the magnetic axis N of the permanent magnet 23 to straighten up again briefly.
Since the rear side of the bar 20 is not occupied, the magnetic field 35 weakens in such a way that the iron filings fall back into the container 2 or are thrown back by centrifugal force (FIG. 2).
Here is a significant advantage of the inventive, rigid and rotationally asymmetrical arrangement of the magnet system 4, @ because that consumes; developing powder falls back into the container early, while in the known devices of this type the used powder only through the fresh developing powder from the drum @ is stripped off, which makes thorough mixing of the fresh and used powder considerably more difficult.
In a known device, for example, the used powder must be fed into a storage container on the side by means of a screw, where it is mixed with a reel that is identical in itself and conveyed into a higher-lying transport channel, whereupon a second screw distributes it the magnetic roller takes over.
In the device according to the invention, on the other hand, the reel can be arranged directly under the rotating drum and over its entire length, which results in a considerable simplification of the arrangement and a considerable saving in space.
The effect that the iron filings stand up at the point 32 (Fig. 3) as a result of the magnetic scattering lines must be seen as a particular advantage of this device, as it can: with it the hardness of the magnetic brush present at this point Rotation of the magnet system optionally set to whoever. For this purpose, only the nut 14 must be loosened and the pin 13 rotated slightly ver by actuating the lever 15 (Fig. 1).
The device according to the invention is further characterized: by its compactness: and by its insensitivity to inclined positions of the device. The amount of powder available has no effect on the functional reliability of the development unit and can be easily checked at any time.
