B. in Betracht: Cyclohexylund Cyclododecyl-Rest.

Process for the polyaddition of A2-oxazolines
It is known that A2-oxazolines can react with carboxylic acids, their anhydrides or halides or with dilute strong acids with ring opening.
It is also known that A2-oxazolines form salt-like compounds of the monomeric 2-oxazoline with strong acids or alkyl halides.
It has now been found that it is possible to produce high molecular weight, nitrogen-containing, linear polymers by polyaddition of A2-oxazolines if A2-oxazolines of the formula
EMI1.1
in which Rt to R5 represent hydrogen atoms, aliphatic or cycloaliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic radicals, but preferably at least 2 radicals hydrogen atoms, polymerized in the presence of cation-active catalysts.
As cationic catalysts are already suitable for the cationic polymerization of cationically polymerizable monomers, such as. B. styrene, known catalysts such. B. sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, organic sulfonic acids, such as. B. p-toluenesulfonic acid, benzenesulfonic acid, 1- or
2-naphthalenesulfonic acid, perchloric acid, preferably in concentrated, over or anhydrous form, boron trifluoride or its addition compounds, e.g. B. ethers, hydrohalic acids, advantageously in anhydrous form, tin chloride, aluminum chloride or elemental iodine. Furthermore, esters of strong acids, such as. B. alkyl sulfates or alkyl sulfonates, alkyl halides, insofar as they can react with amines under Quate nization, and those compounds that under the Polymeris ation conditions, if necessary partially, in the substances mentioned can NEN, such. B. p-nitrophenyl diazonium fluorate or ammonium sulfate.
Salts or salt-like compounds of, 2-oxazolines with the above substances, such as. B. 2-propyl-n2-oxazoline sulfate, 2-phenyl-A2-oxazoline-p-toluenesulfonate, methyl iodide or perchlorate also prove to be effective catalysts.
It is particularly advantageous to use mixed sulfonic acid-carboxylic acid anhydrides of the formula R-SO2-OCO-R 'as cation-active catalysts, in which R and R' represent an alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl radical and are identical or different in a molecule can. The preparation of this list of catalysts according to C. G. Overberger and E. Sarlo, J.Am.Soc. 85 (1963), 2446 possible.
The following can function as alkyl radicals of the mixed sulphonic acid-carboxylic acid anhydrides: methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl and butyl radical. As cycloalkyl radicals, for. B. possible: cyclohexyl and cyclododecyl radical. Possible aromatic radicals are: phenyl, tolyl, cumyl and naphthyl radical.
Catalysts used with advantage are those in which R 'in the formula mentioned represents an aryl radical, since these substances are crystalline and therefore easy to handle. If R and R 'in the formula are aryl radicals, the catalysts in question are relatively less hygroscopic.
R and R 'must not carry any hydroxyl or amine groups, as these have a chain-breaking effect.
The polyaddition-triggering effect of the mixed sulfonic acid-carboxylic acid anhydrides is surprising because carboxylic acid anhydrides do not catalyze the polyaddition of A2-oxazolines, but rather add to them with ring splitting.
The good solubility of these catalysts in the reaction mixture and their high activity (= effective molar concentration of the catalyst) are advantageous. t2-Oxazolines can be known from alkylolamines and carboxylic acids or their derivatives, z. B.
Esters or acid halides, or from carboxylic acid nitriles and epoxies or halohydrins (Chem. Reviews 44 (1949), page 447 ff; Chem. Abstracts 57, 12 453). For the polymerization according to the inventive method, for. B.
2-methyl-, 2-n-propyl-, 2,4,4-trimethyl-, 2-phenyl-, 2-m-nitrophenyl-, 4- or 5-methyl-2-phenyl-, 2-cyclohexyl-, 2-cyclododecyl-, 2- (3-tetrahydrofuryl) -A2-oxazoline.
The cation-active catalysts are expediently used in amounts of 0.001 to 5, preferably 0.001 to 1 percent by weight, based on the 2 oxazoline used.
The polymerization of the L2-oxazolines with cation-active catalysts is often already in progress. at room temperature with prolonged standing. However, it is advantageous to work at an elevated temperature, preferably between 70 and 2800 C, in particular between 90 and 2000 C.
In the case of low-boiling A2-oxazolines, it may be appropriate to polymerize under pressure. But it can also be advantageous to carry out the polymerization under reduced pressure, for. B. when higher-boiling t2-oxazolines are to be polymerized under reflux.
The polymerization is generally carried out in the absence of solvents. However, the polymerization can also be carried out as a solution polymerization, using inert solvents with boiling points at or above the desired polymerization temperature, such as. B. toluene or xylene can be used.
The polymerization can be easily controlled by varying the amount of catalyst or the polymerization temperature. By adding hydroxyl compounds, such as. B. water, or amines, which have a chain-breaking effect, the degree of polymerization can be reduced. The polymers can be purified, for example, by reprecipitation.
The nitrogen-containing polymerization products obtained by the process according to the invention are high molecular weight, thermoplastic, generally hard, transparent plastics. Depending on the molecular weight and the type, number and size of the substituents, they can be used to produce films, foils and threads or thermoplastic molding compounds such as casting resins or injection molded articles.
Some polymers, such as. B. those of 2-methyl A2-oxazoline, are water-soluble and can be used as a thickener or to produce water-soluble films.
The polymers of A2-oxazolines are in solvents such as. B. chloroform, ethylene chloride, dimethylformamide, easily soluble and can be processed from it.
They are characterized by their thermal resistance. The polymers generally prevent electrostatic charging. By adding to other plastics, such as. B. polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, their stability, dyeability or pigmentability can be improved, the static charge can be reduced.
From the German patent specification 1067 437 it is known that vinyl-substituted oxazolines tend to undergo radical polymerization, i. H. that only the vinyl group is used for the polymerization.
The polymerization inhibitors specified in this patent only prevent free radical polymerization in the sense indicated, but not cationic polymerization according to the process of the present application.
