Process for the preparation of N, N'-dibenzoyldiarylaminophthalic acid dialkyl esters
The invention relates to a process for the preparation of dialkyl N, N'-dibenzene-diarylaminophthaisate and corresponding compounds which contain heterocyclic radicals of aromatic character instead of the aryl radicals Ar.
It is known that N-phenyl-benzimino ethers of salicylic acid esters (N-phenyl-benzimino-2-carbalkoxy-phenyl ethers) z. B. of the formula I rearranged at high temperatures to form N-benzoyl-N-phenyl-anthranilic acid esters of the formula II1 2.

2 Houben-Weyl, methods of the org. Chemie Volume XI / 1, pp. 912 ff., 1957.
EMI1.1
Temperatures between 260 and 300 C are required for the rearrangement. Only in exceptional cases is the rearrangement temperature lower. In these cases, however, the yield is low; it is z. B. at 210 C 28 / o d. Th. 3. Because of the high temperatures required, the N-phenylbenzimino ethers of the salicylic acid esters are melted without a solvent, the melt is then heated up to the rearrangement temperature and left at this temperature for some time. Complicated derivatives such as Compounds of this type, for example substituted by methoxy groups, decompose very easily at the required high rearrangement temperatures.

The invention now relates to a process for the preparation of N, N'-dibenzoyl-diaryl-aminophthalic acid csters and corresponding compounds which contain heterocyclic radicals of aromatic character instead of the aryl radicals Ar, of the formula
EMI1.2
in which the Ar-N groups are in the ortho position to the Carbo-ni ^ deralkoxygruppten and in which Ar is an aryl radical or a heterocyclic radical of aromatic character, R is a lower alkyl radical and the radicals Rt and R2 are a hydrogen atom, a nitro group or a or several halogen atoms, alkyl or alkoxy groups, which is characterized by
the one benzimino ether of the formula
EMI2.1
in which the benziminoether groups are in the ortho position to the carbo-lower alkoxy groups, rearranged by heating to temperatures of 110 to 200 C.
These previously unknown benzimino ethers can be obtained by reacting corresponding dihydroxyphthalic acid dialkyl esters, the hydroxyl groups of which are ortho to the carbalkoxy groups, with N-Ar-benzimide chlorides.
The implementation according to the invention proceeds according to the following scheme:
EMI2.2
In the formulas, R z. B. a methyl or ethyl group and the rings A and B z. B. a phenyl radical or z. B. a naphthyl or 9-methylcarbazyl radical.
The temperature range of 110 to 200 ° C. to be used in the process of this invention is considerably below the temperature range known from the literature in which the rearrangement of the corresponding salicylic acid derivatives takes place. With this one has to heat to temperatures of 260 to 300 C, however, one must not exceed 200 C in the process of the invention if one wants to achieve a nearly quantitative yield, since at higher temperatures polymeric resins are formed with elimination of benzoic acid alkyl esters and thus the yield drops .
For rearrangement into the N, N'-dibenzoyldiarylaminophthalic acid dialkyl ester, the bis- (N-aryl) -benz- iminoethers are either in the melt or with solvents such as. B. hydrocarbons, alkylated, halogenated or nitrated hydrocarbons, diakylamides or dialkyllactams or ethers heated to the required temperature. The level of temperature within the marked area depends on the constitution of the compound to be relocated.
Thus the bis (N-aryl) benzimino ethers of the dihydroxyisophthalic acid dialkyl esters are already at a noticeable rate at temperatures around 110 ° C., while temperatures of 170 to 180 ° C. are expedient for the rearrangement of the corresponding derivatives of the other dihydroxyphthalic acids. The reaction time of the rearrangement depends strongly on the temperature; z. For example, the rearrangement of the bis (N-phenyl) benzimino ether of the dihydroxyisophthalic acid dimethyl ester takes about 48 hours at 110 C, while it takes place spontaneously in the melt at 160 to 170 C and is completed in a few minutes. In the case of the derivatives of the isomeric alkyl dihydroxyphthalate, the temperatures of the spontaneous rearrangement are correspondingly higher.
In the rearrangement of bis (N-aryl) benzimino ethers with a high melting point, it is advisable to add small amounts of a solvent to lower the melting point. However, it is often advantageous to rearrange the bis (N-aryl) benzimino ether in solution with the same amount by weight of a solvent, since the N, N'-dibenzoyl derivatives of the dialkyl diarylaminophthalate can more easily be obtained in crystalline form from their solutions .
The tendency of the dialkyl N, N'-dibenzoyl-diarylamino-phthalate to be difficult to crystallize, presumably caused by steric hindrance, can make quantitative isolation of the ester formed in the reaction in crystalline form difficult. For example, the rearrangement of the bis (N-3,5 dichlorophenyl) benzimino ether of the dimethyl dihydroxyisophthalate, which proceeds almost quantitatively, often results in solutions of the solidified melts. In such a case, the yield can be determined by saponification to give the corresponding diarylaminophthalic acid, since this reaction is quantitative.
The bis (N aryl) benzimino ethers of the dihydroxyphthalic acid dialkyl esters to be used for the process can be obtained in a manner known per se by reacting the disodium compounds of the corresponding dihydroxyphthalic acid dialkyl esters with N-aryl benzimide chlorides.
The N, N'-dibenzoyl-diarylaminophthalic acid dialkyl esters can be used as fluorescent dyes because of their pronounced fluorescence in the UV range of light. Condensed into polyester resins, they serve as light stabilizers.
The parts and percentages given in the examples are weight units.

N, N'-dibenzoyl-2,5-dianilinoterephthalic acid dimethyl ester (R = CH3, R, = R, = H). a) 15 parts of bis (N-phenyl) benzimino ether of the 2.5 dihydroxyterephthalic acid dimethyl ester are heated to 180 to 185 ° C. in 15 parts of dichlorobenzene for 8 hours. After cooling to 60 ° C., the solution is mixed with 30 parts of methanol. After several hours of crystallization, the separated crystals are filtered off with suction.
14.5 parts of N, N'-dibenzoyl-2, 5-dianilincterephthalic acid dimethyl ester with a melting point of 272 ° C. are obtained. After recrystallization from dimethylformamide / water, the pure compound is obtained, which has a melting point of 275 ° C. The analysis of this substance gives the following values: found: C73.0% H 5.0% O 16.7% N 5, l% calculated: C 74.1% H 4.8% O 164% N 4.8%
The colorless diethyl ester (R = C2H5, Ri = R2 = H) with a melting point of 228¯ C is obtained in an analogous manner. B) 6 parts of bis (N-phenyl) benzimino ether of the 2.5 dihydroxyterephthalic acid dimethyl ester are converted into 2 parts of trichlorobenzene heated to 200 ° C. for 1 hour.

The bis- (N-phenyl) -beniminoÏther of the 2, 5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid dimethyl ester to be used in this example according to processes a) and b) is prepared as follows: To a solution of 11, 3 parts of 2,5-dihydroxy-terephthalic acid dimethyl ester 18 parts of a 30% sodium methylate solution in methanol are added in portions at 80 ° C. in 50 parts of N-2-methylpyrrolidone. The mixture is heated to about 100 ° C. and all the methanol is removed by passing a stream of nitrogen over it. Thereafter, 5 parts of N-phenylbenzimidyl chloride are added to the mixture at 25 ° C. The mixture is then stirred for 20 to 24 hours at about 20 ° C. The colorless crystals which then precipitate are filtered off with suction and washed with a little solvent and water.
This gives 21.5 parts of bis (N-phenyl) benzimino ether of 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid dimethyl ester with a melting point of 237 C. After recrystallization from dimethylformamide, the compound is obtained in colorless platelets with a melting point of 247 C.
