Process for the production of boranates The main patent relates to a process for the production of boranates, whereby an alkali metal borate with the exception of the metaborates or an alkaline earth metal borate, or mixtures thereof, is reacted with a mixture of alkali metal and hydrogen at 100 to 1000.degree .
The preparation of boronates is described in a number of publications, boron halides, boron halide complexes, organoborocompounds or boric acid anhydride serving as boron-containing starting substances. These substances are all expensive and some are difficult to handle.
In the Swiss patents no. 420 075 and 412824 processes for the production of boranates are described, in which one of the metals Al, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Li, Na, K, Rb or Cs is reacted as a hydride with a metaborate or
a metal oxide-boron oxide mixture with the metaborate comparable composition of a metal of the above series, which is not further left in the above series than the hydride metal, where the reaction takes place at temperatures above 100 C and below the melting point of the mixture. This forms the boranate of the metaborate metal and the oxide of the hydride metal.
The invention relates to a process for the preparation of alkali metal boronates, which fiction according to the fact that an alkali metal oxide or an alkaline earth metal oxide or mixtures thereof with boron oxide in a molar ratio of
EMI0001.0042
and reacts with an alkali metal hydride at temperatures between 100 and 1000 C.
In order to obtain optimum results, the reactants are preferably mixed with one another in such amounts that there are at least 4 alkali metal atoms and 4 atoms of hydrogen for each boron atom present in the reaction mixture. The reaction can be carried out with or without the use of excess hydrogen pressure at temperatures between 100 and 1000 C. In most cases it is advantageous to use temperatures between about 300 and 600 C.
Mixtures of alkali metal oxide or alkaline earth metal oxide or, if appropriate, compounds of these metals which produce these oxides during the reaction, mixed with boron oxide, are also suitable as starting materials. The yield of the reaction is significantly improved if it is carried out in the presence of certain additives. These can be divided into two groups: a) Auxiliaries that react chemically with the resulting alkali oxide. As such, z. B.
Calcium chloride (formation of MeCI -h Ca0) or z. B. Acid anhydrides, such as Si02. The silicon dioxide can also be added to the reaction mixture in the form of alkali borosilicate.
b) Chemically inert substances which dilute the reaction mixture also have a reaction-promoting effect. From the large number of substances that can be used for this purpose, table salt and feldspar are mentioned.
