Constant velocity universal joint, method of manufacturing this joint, and machine for implementing this method The present invention relates to a universal constant velocity joint, a method for its manufacture and a machine for implementing this method.
The constant velocity universal joints generally comprise internal and external elements, presenting guide grooves distributed angularly around the axis of the joint, in which are housed connecting balls transmitting the torque from one element to the other, these balls rolling along the grooves when hinging the joint.
The identity of the instantaneous angular speeds of the two elements depends on the precise position of the balls, the centers of which must remain in the median plane of the joint, whatever the angle formed, the median plane being the bisector plane of the instantaneous input axes and exit of the joint, passing through the center of articulation of the joint, which is the point of intersection of the axes, the axis of the joint being the,
line on which these two axes coincide when the elements of the joint are in line.
One way to position the balls is to incline the inner and outer grooves with respect to the axis of the elements, so that the grooves intersect in the midplane and retain the balls at their points of intersection. Joints of this type are known comprising helical grooves in opposite directions on the two elements.
However, it is extremely difficult to obtain sufficient precision in the execution of these helical grooves, both as regards the concentricity and the angle of the helix.
This manufacture presents great difficulties because a very small error in the angle of the helix already causes the inner and outer grooves to cross outside the median plane.
The aim of the present invention is to provide a solution to this problem.
The constant velocity universal joint according to the invention is characterized by the fact that it comprises an internal element having external rolling grooves for torque-transmitting balls, distributed angularly around the axis of the joint and extending, in developed view, on a common sinusoid, of an external element having internal rolling grooves for balls,
also angularly distributed around the axis of the seal and also lying, in developed view, on a common sinusoid, these elements being assembled to each other by the balls, with an angular offset of 180o with respect to the sinusoids, corresponding to a phase opposition thereof, such that the grooves of the two elements intersect on the median plane of the joint.
The process for the manufacture of this seal is characterized by the fact that, for machining the grooves of the inner and outer elements, the elements are rotated around their axis and a machining tool is moved in a direction parallel to their axis, in a simple harmonic movement, the amplitude and period of which are a function of the speed of rotation of the element, so that the grooves made by the tool are all located,
in expanded view, on a common sinusoidal curve.
The machine for implementing this method is characterized by the fact that it comprises a rotary spindle intended to carry the workpiece, a machining head movable in a direction parallel to the axis of the spindle,
drive means for the machining head and means for driving the rotating workpiece spindle and for imparting a reciprocating back-and-forth movement to the machining head according to a simple harmonic movement synchronized with the spindle rotation, all to allow machining sinusoidal grooves.
The drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention.
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of a constant velocity universal joint with a partial axial section. Fig. 2 is a section along the line II-II of FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is a schematic view, in plan development, of the guide grooves of the balls.
Fig. 4 is a schematic perspective view of these grooves.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the machine, with a section taken along the line V-V of FIG. 6.
Figs. 6 and 7 are sections along lines VI-VI and VII-VII of FIG. 5.
The seal shown comprises an inner member 1 and an outer member 2, in the general shape of cylindrical crowns and each having six .rainures 3 and 4 for balls. The member 1 is connected by means of splines to a drive shaft 5 located on one side of the member 2. On the other side of the member 2 is bolted a bell-shaped element 6 with a flange 7.
At its left end, the shaft 5 has a flange welded at 8 to a tube 9 constituting a transmission shaft.
The grooves 3 and 4 cooperate in pairs to house balls 10 transmitting the torque from one member to another. A cage 12 for the balls is housed between the components 1 and 2. This cage does not touch the internal component which the balls 10 keep centered in the external component 2.
The grooves 3 and 4 have a cross section of elliptical shape so that the pressure angle of the balls is 30o. This angle indicated at A in fig. 2, is the angle between a line passing through the center of a ball and the center B of the seal, and a radius of the ball passing through the point of contact of the ball and the side of the groove.
This relatively small pressure angle is necessary so that there is a gap between the inner and outer members making it possible to give the cage 12 a significant thickness in a central zone where it has a spherical outer surface.
This central zone is extended by lateral parts of decreasing thickness allowing the articulation of the joint.
The spherical central part of the cage 12 is housed in a bore 13 of the outer member 2 and extends over an arc of 71/2 () on each side of the axis of the coupling. The two lateral parts of the cage 12 are frustoconical in shape.
The grooves have a sinusoidal shape, the six grooves 3 on the one hand and the six grooves 4 on the other hand, being located on the same sinusoid looped on itself. In fig. 3, which is a developed view, the two sinusoids each relating to the grooves of one of the components are represented at C and D.
These two sinusoids are phase-shifted by 1800. The seal can absorb a relative axial movement of the components 1 and 2 and the sinusoids are drawn in fig. 3 in the relative position they occupy when the right-hand ends (fig. 1) of components 1 and 2 coincide with line P-P,
the opposite ends of organs 1 and 2 then coinciding with the line QQ for organ 1, and RR for organ 2. The axis of symmetry of the sinusids, located in the median plane of the joint, is indicated by the SS line.
Fig. 4 shows schematically how the position of the centers of the balls is determined as a result of the intersection of the grooves 3 and 4 so that the centers remain constantly in the median plane of the joint.
When the angle is zero, the aligned axes of the inner and outer members corresponding to the axis T of the joint, the centers of the balls are in the median plane V normal to this axis T.
If the joint is oriented at an angle, the axis of the inner member 1 taking the position indicated in W, the plane of the centers of the balls comes in Vi, turning by the angle / 2. This plane Vi -is the bisecting plane of the angle comprised between the plane V and the plane X normal to the axis W. The corresponding position of the axis of the cage is indicated in Y.
The machine used to shape the grooves housing the balls is shown in fig. 5 and 6. It comprises a frame 20 having at one end a doll 21 under which is placed a vertical drive shaft 22.
A telescopic coupling 23 connects the shaft 22 to a tangent screw 24 driving the spindle of the doll 21: which carries a mandrel 25 rotating around a horizontal axis in bearings 26. The outer member 2 of the described joint is shown in 27, being machined on the machine, clamped in the chuck 25.
The lower end of the shaft 22 carries a pulley 28 serving to drive the mechanism from a motor, not shown. The shaft 22 is pivoted in bearings 29 and carries, just above these bearings, a toothed wheel 30 meshing with a toothed wheel 32 pivoted on bearings 33. The wheel 32 carries an eccentric crank pin 34.
The machine comprises a cutting head mounted on a slide 35 movable along longitudinal guides 36 of the frame 20; this slide is driven back and forth. The slide 35 carries an independent vertical axis motor 37, driving by means of a belt transmission a vertical axis spindle 38.
The transmission has two stages 39 and 40, with an intermediate shaft 42, to obtain a high speed of rotation of the spindle 38 on which is mounted a profiled grinding wheel shown at 43.
The spindle 38 is placed at the end of a support 44 capable of penetrating into the workpiece 27. The support 44 is movable along vertical guides 45 and a screw 46 makes it possible to adjust its position in height, and thus the working depth of the. grinding wheel 43. The intermediate shaft 42 can be moved to ensure the tension of the belts. In a variant, the grinding wheel 43 can be replaced by a milling cutter.
During machining, slide 35 plunges into workpiece 27, spindle 38 moving parallel to itself through the workpiece which is rotated.
To generate the sinusoidal shape given to the grooves dug in the part, the slide is driven in a back and forth movement synchronized with the rotation of the part so as to obtain a simple harmonic, the grinding wheel 43 passing through RTI ID = "0002.0211" WI = "5" HE = "4" LX = "1884" LY = "2096"> six times part 27 on each turn of the latter. The reciprocating movement of the slide 35 is controlled by a connecting rod 48 having a transverse slot 47 engaged on the crankpin 34.
The connecting rod 48 is connected by a key 49 to the slide 35 and moves between lateral guides 50 of the frame 20, according to a harmonic amplitude.
The transmission ratio of the wheels 30 and 32 and of the tangent screw 24 is determined so that the crankpin 34 describes three full turns for each revolution of the part 27. In the example shown by the drawing, the machine is used to. grinding internal grooves in the part 27 constituting the external member. The same machine can be used to grind outer grooves on the periphery of the inner member of the seal.
In this case, the doll 21 is lifted and an intermediate piece, not shown, is placed under the sole 51 of the doll, the telescopic coupling allowing this change of position in height.
To facilitate assembly of the seal, the geometric axis of the grooves, that is to say the plane of intersection of the grooves 3 and 4 when the seal is straight, is offset towards one of the ends of the member exterior 2. In this way, this member 2, shorter on one side, is asymmetric with respect to the sinusoids of the grooves.
This arrangement makes it possible to introduce the balls 10 at the shorter end of the member 2, when the inner member 1 is, on the one hand, inclined to the maximum relative to the member 2 and, on the other hand, to the maximum. in this organ 2.
The maximum relative axial displacement allowed for the outer and inner members is determined by the useful length of the grooves 4 in the outer member 2,
and the magnitude of the simple harmonic motion communicated to the grinding wheel spindle 38 is chosen to provide the desired angle of intersection of the inner and outer grooves.
For example, for an angle of the joint of 15 (), the angle of intersection of the grooves, in the straight position of the joint, may be 200. The minimum intersection angle will be under these conditions d 'at least 5o for any pair of grooves, ensuring the maintenance of the balls.
