Magnetohydrodynamic generator In a known magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) generator, an electrically conductive medium flows on a helical path through a magnetic field. A major advantage of such generators is their compact design.
In order to guide the magnetic field through the working medium without stray losses, concentric magnet windings are provided in this generator, which enclose the flow space at both of its end faces to generate a radial magnetic field in the flow space, the magnetic field being passed through the working medium without stray losses.
An undesirable side effect of MHD generators with the working medium guided on a screw path is the displacement of the working medium to the circumference of the duct by centrifugal forces. This results in increased friction and increased cooling of the medium on the duct wall.
It has been recognized that these disadvantages can be avoided in an alternator.
The invention accordingly relates to a magnetohydrodynamic generator in which an electrically conductive medium flows on a helical path through a radial magnetic field in an annular channel, which includes electrodes and magnetic windings arranged on its two end faces to generate the magnetic field.
In order to avoid displacement of the working medium to the channel circumference in such MHD generators, it is now proposed according to the invention that the magnetic windings on a. To connect the AC network and to connect the electrodes on the circumference of the ring channel, by electrical conductors, which we sentlichen are parallel to the screw axis.
The current flowing between the electrodes in the working medium and its return current via the outer channel wall of the annular channel results in a field superimposed on the applied magnetic field. This magnetic field, together with the current flowing between the electrodes, causes a centripetal force which counteracts the centrifugal force on the working medium and can compensate it. As a result, the working medium is deflected from the outer duct wall and the ring duct is filled with medium relatively evenly in cross section, which results in good generator utilization.
In the MHD generator according to the invention, inductive reactive power to build up the magnetic fields is taken from the alternating current network through the magnetic windings, and at the same time active power is fed into the network with alternating voltage from the same windings. The generator is therefore particularly suitable for running on interconnected networks.
The explanation of embodiments of the invention is to be made based on the drawing who the. The designations of the individual physical quantities are identical in all figures.

In Fig. 4 a diagram for the magnetic field distribution is sketched, which cooperates with FIG. On the abscissa distances are plotted over the cross section of FIG. 3 and on the ordinate the ma magnetic induction in the annular channel in arbitrary units.

<tb> v <SEP> = <SEP> plasma flow FIG. 1 shows the generator part as it is seen after an axial section. In the flow space 1 of the cylindrical annular generator channel, the plasma is fed through a supply pipe 2 with z.
B. a rectangular cross-section is introduced tangentially, and it leaves it through a tube 3, which is also rectangular in the exemplary embodiment. The annular channel of the MHD generator is formed by coaxial cylindrical walls 4 and 5 and by two circular electrodes 6 arranged on the end faces educated.
The electrodes are connected to one another on the circumference of the annular channel by allelic segments 11 made of electrically conductive material to the screw axis in a preferred direction which lies in planes through the screw axis 7. The representation according to FIG. 1 is to be interpreted in such a way that just such a conductive segment is shown in section in the upper section through the outer duct wall 5.
Subsequently, segments made of insulating material or layers 10 made of Blakite putty have to be imagined, as shown in the lower cut surface of the outer duct wall.
Concentric to the screw axis 7 close to the electrodes 6 on the two end faces of the annular channel or flow space annular magnetic windings 8 and 9, which here are made of superconducting material and generate the magnetic field B applied.
In the exemplary embodiment, two coils wound in the same direction 8 and 9 are provided, which are connected with opposite polarity to a network N, into which they feed active power. The inner cylinder 4, which forms the inner channel wall, can consist of electrically insulating materials, such as ceramic, or else be insulated from the electrodes 6 only by electrically insulating cement layers.
The cylindrical wall 5 of the annular channel only needs to be constructed from materials that are not magnetically conductive.
Because of the centripetal guidance of the plasma, the material requirements for the outer cylinder wall 5 are reduced. Copper, which can be cooled if necessary, can be used as the material for the conductive segments.
2, which reproduces the ring channel of the MHD generator according to the invention in a simplified manner as you can see it after a section perpendicular to the axis, gives a clearer impression of the division of the outer cylinder wall 5 of the ring channel into electrically conductive segments 11 and in Layers of insulating material 10.
The generator works as follows: The ring channel 1 in FIG. 1 is penetrated by an applied radial magnetic field with the induction B, which the coils 8 and 9 generate. An electrically conductive working medium, e.g. B. a gas with plasma properties is fed through the inlet 2 tangentially. The plasma passes through the ring channel 1 on a screw path with the speed v and leaves it in the direction of the arrow: through the outlet 3.
At right angles to the plasma flow at speed v and to the magnetic field with induction B, a current I is induced in the plasma, which causes an electric field strength E between the circular electrodes 6.
The electrodes 6 are conductively connected via electrically conductive segments 11 of the cylindrical duct wall 5. The currents I through the plasma and the return currents IR over the conductive segments of the duct wall 5 represent circular currents.
If one takes into account that the current conduction occurs in the plasma via the electrodes, one understands that these circulating currents trigger Hall currents in the direction of Ig because of the applied magnetic field of induction B. These circular house currents, which are closed around the axis 7 (see FIG. 1), run against the Hall field strength <B> EH </B>, which would be measured between probes imagined in the plasma.
In the simplified cross-sectional sketch according to FIG. 3, the magnetic induction BI: the currents I in the plasma between the electrodes, the induction BIP of the reverse current IR, and the resulting induction BAI are indicated according to direction and size.
In Fig. 4, the wall distances from the indicated generator cross-section of FIG. 3 are projected onto the abscissa A of the diagram of FIG. 4, and on the ordinate O the strength of the magnetic induction is plotted in arbitrary units.
This gives a qualitative impression of the induction distribution. The magnetic induction is plotted on the ordinate above the abscissa when an imaginary plane through the axis of the annular channel with generators parallel to the abscissa is pierced upwards by the magnetic induction.
The induction BAI resulting from the magnetic induction BI and BIR, which only comes about in the working medium, increases sharply towards the circumference of the ring channel. Then, in cooperation with the currents running into the plane of the drawing according to FIG. 3, centripetal forces are exerted on the plasma between the electrodes. This force effect is greatest at the circumference of the ring channel and drops below zero up to the inner wall of the ring channel.
On the other hand, since the centrifugal force is inversely proportional to the radius of the orbit, the effect of the centrifugal force on the plasma is reduced. This largely prevents the plasma from crowding in front of the channel wall.
The regenerative power comes through the induction effect of the circular around axis 7 closed house currents III (according to Fig. 1 or 2) on the windings 8 and 9 about.
It is understandable that the outer cylinder wall 5 of the ring channel can also be constructed from a uniform material and that conductors can be laid on the outside of the ring channel for the conductive connection of the electrodes 6. The channel walls can then be made uniformly from ceramic materials or also from stainless steels, which are isolated from the electrodes by electrically insulating cement joints.
The outer cylinder wall of the annular channel can, if necessary, also have a conical shape, to take account of the change in volume and speed of the plasma when it cools down due to work performance.
