U. in Frage.
Pressure indicators for diesel engines and similar internal combustion engines
In the case of diesel engines, especially for ship propulsion, there is a great need for an arrangement for continuously determining the pressure or pressure profile in the various cylinders. Many attempts have been made to solve this problem, but all have failed, mainly because soot and other combustion products enter the measuring system and cause slagging of moving and pressure-sensing parts.
The present invention relates to a pressure indicator for diesel engines and the like internal combustion engines, in which a cooled liquid column, e.g. B. water column, is arranged to transmit the pressure in the cylinder to a pressure-sensing member. The invention is characterized in that means for collecting and separating the solid combustion products which penetrate into the liquid column are arranged for the purpose of preventing them from reaching the pressure-sensing organ.
It is possible with an arrangement according to the invention. to obtain a continuous monitoring of the working pressure and pressure curve in a diesel engine, without the risk that the solid combustion products settle on or in the pressure sensing element and reduce its sensitivity. The solid combustion products which penetrate into the arrangement are caught by the liquid column which transfers the pressure to the pressure-sensing element and sink into a container which is provided with a removable stopper. The fact that the liquid column is cooled eliminates the risk that the liquid will evaporate too quickly from the hot gases that are intermittently transferred from the cylinder.
In the accompanying drawing, a section through an example embodiment of the pressure indicator according to the invention is shown, which is kombi ned with a pressure measuring arrangement of the membrane type and dynamometer.
A liquid container 2 with a filler screw 3 is arranged in a housing 1. A tubular channel 4 leads from the lower part of the liquid container to a needle valve 5. With the aid of the needle valve, the channel 4 can be connected to another channel 6 which opens into a container 7. This container is provided with a stopper 8 at the bottom, which is unscrewed when the container is to be emptied and cleaned. In the upper part of the container opens a pipe 9 which has a central channel 10 that extends through it. At its upper end, the tube 9 has a head 11 which is fastened in the housing 1.
The head 11 is internally provided with a wound bore 12 which forms the connection for the measuring tube of a cylinder in a diesel engine. The channel 10 connects the bore 12 with the container 7. The tube 9 is guided through a cavity 13 in the housing 1, through which coolant flows to cool the tube 9. The cavity 13 has an inlet 14 and an outlet 15. The coolant is fed to the housing 1 through the channel 16 and passes through an annular container 17 which is located above the pressure gauge and is closed with a cover 18. The inlet 14 connects the container 17 with the cavity 13.
The annular container 17 is traversed by a central ventilation duct 19, which is sealed at its upper end with a ventilation plug 20. A channel 21, which comes from the container 7 and forms the continuation of the channel 6, opens into the channel 19. The channel 19 ends in a space 22 above a membrane which influences a pressure-sensitive organ 28.
The pressure-sensitive or pressure-sensing element 28, which can be of any type per se, is shown in the figure as a magnetoelastic measuring device which converts a force into a corresponding electrical signal, is arranged in a measuring device housing 27.
The pressure-sensing element 28 is held in place under a certain prestress with the aid of a resilient membrane 25. A pressure piece 23, which is exposed to the pressure to be measured in space 22, rests on the central part of this membrane 25. The pressure piece 23 is surrounded by a circular ring 24 and connected to it by an elastic membrane 26.
The measuring device housing 27 also contains a Krupp treatment foundation 29 for the measuring device and a bushing 30 for the connections to the measuring device.
The measuring device itself and the arrangements for transferring the pressure to the measuring device are not the subject of the invention, but only mentioned and shown in order to show possible equipment.
With the help of the cooling water, which is supplied to the arrangement through the channel 16, the container 17, the inlet 14 to the cavity 13 surrounding the pipe 9 and leaves the arrangement through the outlet 15, the arrangement and especially the pipe 9 is opened kept the temperature of the coolant. The liquid column which is located in the channel 10 and in the pipe 9 therefore has by and large the same temperature as the cooling water. The upper surface of the liquid column is exposed to the hot gases from the cylinder, but since the contact area between gas and liquid column is comparatively small, the heating of the liquid is very moderate and the evaporation of the liquid is comparatively insignificant.
Evaporation takes place slowly, of course, so that the top surface of the liquid column slowly sinks.
The liquid is filled in by closing the connection tap of the cylinder, and at the same time the arrangement is connected to atmospheric pressure. The needle valve 5 is then opened so that the liquid flows in from the container 2 through the channels 4 and 6. The needle valve 5 is then closed and the connection tap is opened.
The combustion products which enter the pressure gauge together with the gas are collected in the liquid column in the tube 9 and sink down into the container 7, which is emptied if necessary by unscrewing the plug 8.
Water is expediently used as the liquid for the liquid column, on the one hand because it is cheap, on the other hand, and above all because it has the highest heat generation and therefore evaporates slowly.
If necessary, a softener can be added to prevent oily particles from floating on the surface of the liquid. Other liquids with a higher boiling point may also be used. U. in question.
Because the channels containing the liquid are straight and can be easily reached with simple and robust cleaning tools when the filler screw 2, the needle valve 5, the plug 8 and the vent plug 20 have been removed, the arrangement can be very easy and cleaned well without the slightest risk of damaging the sensitive parts of the measuring device.
When it is desired to measure the mean pressure in the cylinder, the measuring equipment shown is exchanged for an ordinary manometer and a mechanical low-pass filter of known type.
