Description

  Pad for elevating the legs
The invention relates to a pad for elevating the legs.

Elevating the legs is an important therapeutic measure in the treatment and prevention of phlebitis. In-depth experimental work has shown that the elevation can only be described as correct if two basic requirements are met:
1. The venous pressure in Iden leg veins must be zero. This can only be achieved if the level difference between the confluence of the inferior vena cava into the right atrium and the leg veins is eliminated.

   2. The knee joint should rest in a semi-bent position, because this is the only way to ensure complete relaxation of the muscles in the muscles.

So far, devices for lifting the heel, wedge-shaped pads that hold the entire leg in an inclined position, and cuboid-shaped pads that only support the leg in the calf region have been used for the stated purpose. It is clear that these known aids do not meet the above conditions and - insofar as they are usable at all - have considerable defects.

In contrast, a cushion according to the invention for elevating the legs has the shape of a cuboid with a wedge adjoining a side wall.

According to a further development of the invention, the cuboid part of the cushion has a height of approximately 17 cm. This corresponds to the difference in height between the confluence of the inferior vena cava in the right atrium of the heart and the leg veins in the supine position, which is largely independent of the size and strength of the person.

In a manner known per se, the cushion can be made of rubber or plastic material and be inflatable. In this embodiment, vertical, transverse partition walls are preferably provided, which subdivide the cushion into individual air chambers. This ensures that the pressure of the padding surface against the leg varies and can be adapted to local requirements.

An exemplary embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawing.

The pad shown is made of rubber or plastic. The cuboid part 1 is dimensioned so that the heel and the entire lower leg can rest. Its height is about 17 cm. The side of the pad facing the hollow of the knee is beveled and forms a wedge 2 adjoining Iden cuboid 1. This allows the knee to rest in a half-bent position, so that complete relaxation of the leg muscles is guaranteed.

Individual air chambers are created by vertical, transverse partition walls 3, for each of which an inflation valve 4 is provided. In the unloaded state of the cushion, the outer walls of the air chambers are slightly bulged. The pressure in each chamber can be regulated as required, thus varying the pressure of the cushion surface against the sick leg. Equal to iti; The practical requirements of nursing are met in that the cushion is easily washable and inflatable and takes up little space when not in use.

Circulatory measurements with radioactive isotopes showed that the venous return is accelerated by up to 20% and thus venous stasis, one of the three main causes of thrombosis, is prevented.

Of course, the cushion according to the invention can also be fully stuffed and possibly on its surface with an elastic pad, e.g. B. made of foam rubber or the like, be provided. Although the width of the pad is usually chosen so that there is space for both legs next to each other, it would be possible to produce pads with a suitable width for raising a single leg.
