Verfahren zur Herstellung von wasserlöslichen, härtbaren
Schwefel-Phenol-Formaldehyd-Harzen

Process for the production of water-soluble, curable
Sulfur-phenol-formaldehyde resins
It is known that sulfur-phenol resins obtained by heating a phenol with sulfur in the presence of alkalis can be hardened by reaction with formaldehyde or compounds containing active methylene groups, whereby they lose their alcohol solubility and turn into insoluble, infusible products .
Similar infusible and insoluble hardened resins are also obtained if phenols are first condensed with aldehydes and only then heated with sulfur and alkali.
Due to the insolubility and the extensive hardening, the resins obtained in this way are useless for many purposes, such as for the production of impregnating resin solutions for the impregnation of laminates, because it must be expected of such impregnating resins that on the one hand they are still soluble in water and that on the other hand, they are not hardened, since hardening may only take place when processing in the laminate. In addition, such resins for impregnation purposes are usually still required that they do not contain too much free formaldehyde or free alkali and that they do not self-harden too quickly into highly condensed products during storage.
On the other hand, however, such resins should be hardenable to such an extent that the laminates impregnated with them should be satisfactory in terms of their mechanical properties and their water resistance after hardening. The difficulty in the production of impregnating resins lies in the requirement to meet all these conditions,
A number of experiences have already been made in this regard in the field of conventional phenolic resins, but not so with the sulfur phenol-formaldehyde resins, which, due to their sulfur bridge content, behave differently in various respects from simple resins made from phenols and formaldehyde.
It has now been found that water-soluble, curable sulfur-phenol resins can be prepared by treating phenols in the presence of 0.01-0.2 moles of an alkaline-reacting inorganic substance and / or an organic base per mole of phenols at temperatures of 110-210 C are reacted with 0.1-3 moles of sulfur per mole of phenols and the resulting sulfur-phenol compounds are then reacted at pH values of 7-12 and temperatures of 20-100 C with 0.3-3.0 moles of formaldehyde-releasing formaldehyde Compounds or resols containing free methylol groups are reacted per mole of phenols used.
The phenols are preferably reacted with 0.5-1.5 moles of sulfur per mole of phenol and the sulfur-phenol compounds with 0.5-1.5 moles of formaldehyde, formaldehyde-releasing compounds or resols containing free methylol groups per mole of phenols used.
The reaction of the phenols with sulfur is most conveniently carried out in the presence of alkalis or alkaline earths and an organic base. The hydroxides and carbonates of sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium and barium can be used as alkalis or alkaline earths. Suitable organic bases are aliphatic and aromatic amines, the sulfur phenolic resins take place at the lowest possible temperatures. The sulfur-phenol compound reacts with the remaining free formaldehyde, but above all with the free methylol groups present in the resin solution, as can be seen from a very strong increase in viscosity.
The aqueous solutions of these products have a greater tendency to post-condensation than the aqueous solutions of the condensation products, which are obtained by post-treatment of sulfur-phenol compounds with formaldehyde, but they are more stable. The hot water absorption and thickness swellings of the laminate panels obtained from these resin solutions after pressing and curing with papers are also more favorable, whereas there are no differences with regard to the degree of elasticization.
In addition to the possible uses in the production of impregnating resins for laminates, in particular for waterproof, elasticized and post-deformable laminates, the resins according to the invention are also suitable for the production of chipboard, fibreboard, in the precipitated state as rubber-compatible resins and as vulcanizing agents and as adhesives for the Various purposes, in particular for wood-metal and metal-metal bonds and for the production of brake linings and grinding wheels.
Example 1 470.5 g (5 mol) of phenol, 160 g (5 mol) of sulfur and 11t1 cm3 of 33% sodium hydroxide solution (0.125 mol of NaOH) are mixed and heated to 100 ° C. for 180 minutes.
630 cm3 of 30% formaldehyde solution (6.85 mol of formaldehyde) and 13.35 cm3 of 33% sodium hydroxide solution (0.15 mol of NaOH) are added to the sulfur-phenol compound obtained in this way and the mixture is heated to 630 ° C. for three hours Then it is neutralized with hydrochloric acid up to a pH value of 8, 14 g of oleic acid are added and about 400 g of water are distilled off in vacuo. A further 120 g of methanol are then added.
Allf in this way an approximately 61% solution of a sulfur-phenol-formaldehyde resin which can still be thinned with water is obtained.
If papers are impregnated with such a solution and pressed to form laminates, the result is a hot water absorption of 6.2%, a thickness swelling of 3.1 S, a longitudinal modulus of elasticity of 102,000 and a Qaerelastic modulus of 67,000.
Example
941 g; (10 mol) phenol, 384 g (12 mol) sulfur, 22.2 cm3 of 33% sodium hydroxide solution (0.25 mol NaOH) and 23.2 g (0.2 mol) hexamethylenediamine are mixed and left for 2 hours 1600 C heated.
The sulfur-phenol compound obtained in this way is then treated with 1104 cm3 of 3% formaldehyde solution (12 mol of formaldehyde) and with 26.7 cm3 of 33% sodium hydroxide solution (0.3 mol of diphenylguanidine, pyridine, carbazole. It has been shown that the organic bases not only catalyze the reaction between phenol and sulfur, but also improve the sulfur-phenol-formaldehyde resins produced in the further course of the reaction, especially when polyvalent aliphatic amines such as hexamethylenediamine or diethylenetriamine are used.
Examples of suitable phenols are phenol, cresols, xylenol, alkylphenols and mixtures of these compounds.
According to a particular embodiment, the sulfur-phenol condensation products formed are reacted with aqueous formaldehyde solution at temperatures of 40-750 ° C., 0.5-1.5 mol of formaldehyde per mol of phenols used. The sulfur-phenol condensation products are primarily methylolated. It is particularly useful to add solubilizing substances such as alcohols, methylolphenols or weakly condensed phenol-formaldehyde resins and / or emulsifiers such as sodium olate, casein or carboxymethyl cellulose to the resin solutions to improve their resistance after the condensation.
If the resins produced by this process are used as solutions for impregnating impregnating paper, 100 parts of drying paper are impregnated with 55 parts of solid resin, and seven such core layers are then cured for 15 months at 1450 C and 80 kg / cm2 pressure to form a core layer laminate package and tested accordingly, it is surprisingly found that when using the sulfur-phenol-formaldehyde resins according to the invention, improved laminates are obtained compared to the conventional phenol-formaldehyde resins.
Above all, the resins according to the invention lead to improvements in basticity, because while using the known phenol-formaldehyde resols longitudinal modulus of elasticity between 130,000 and 160,000 and transverse modulus of elasticity between 90,000 and 120,000 are measured, when the sulfur-phenol-formalds according to the invention are used - hydharze values from 70,000 to 110,000 (lengthways) or
40,000 to 85,000 (landscape). In addition, the resins, especially those with a higher sulfur content, have the advantage over conventional phenolic resins that they can still be post-formed in the laminates after curing.
The post-condensation of the phenol-sulfur compounds formed can also be carried out with phenol-formaldehyde condensation products which have a high content of methylol groups. Resins are expediently used here which are obtained by condensation of one mole of phenol and 1.5-4 moles of formaldehyde in aqueous solution at pH values of 7-10 and temperatures of 20-900.degree. The reaction with NaOH) mixed and heated to 800 C for 105 minutes.
1000 g of a 66 Sigen phenolic resin solution, which was prepared by condensing 941 g of phenol with 1610 cm3 of 30% formaldehyde solution in an alkaline solution at 850 ° C. and removing the corresponding amount of water, and 200 g of isopropyl alcohol are then added.
A resin solution is obtained which is compatible with water in the ratio 1 0.2.
Laminate panels produced with it have a hot water absorption of 5.0%, a thickness swelling of 6.25, a longitudinal modulus of elasticity of 97,000 and a transverse modulus of elasticity of 65,000.
Example 3

The sulfur-phenol compound obtained in this way is then reacted with 1196 cm3 of 30% formaldehyde solution (12 mol formaldehyde) and 11.1 cm3 of 33% sodium hydroxide solution (0.125 mol NaOH) for 40 minutes at 900 C, then in a vacuum of 380 cm8 Freed from water, mixed with 240 cm3 of isopropyl alcohol and 2000 g of a phenol-formaldehyde resin solution. The phenol-formaldehyde resin solution used is an approximately 65% strength solution of a resole, which is obtained by reacting phenol and formaldehyde in a molar ratio of 0.75 at 850 ° C. in the presence of 0.025 mol of alkali per mol of phenol. The result is an approximately 60% resin solution which still has a water compatibility of 1: 0.9.

A resole is then added to 650 g of the highly viscous sulfur-phenol compound, which is composed of 941 g (10 mol) of phenol, 2300 cm3 of 30% formaldehyde solution (25 mol of formaldehyde) and 17.8 cm3 of 33% sodium hydroxide solution by heating to 800% for two hours C and removal of 1400 cm3 of water in vacuo. A resol is added to 1320 g of the condensation product, which was obtained by condensing 941 g (10 mol) of phenol with 2760 cm3 of 30% formaldehyde solution in the presence of 23 cm3 of 33% sodium hydroxide solution at 800 ° C. and removing 1550 cm3 of water in vacuo .

(4 mm Din cup), a hardening time of about 7 minutes at 1300 ° C. and a water compatibility of 1: 0.4 .

A resole is then added, which was obtained from 941 g of phenol, 2300 cm3 of 30% formaldehyde solution and 23 cm3 of 33% sodium hydroxide solution by heating at 730 ° C. for three hours and removing 1200 g of water in vacuo. The mixture is heated to 600 ° C. for one hour. The result is a 70% resin solution with a viscosity of about 14 "at 300 ° C. (4 mm Din beaker) and a water compatibility of 1: 0.1 to 0.2.
