Description

Method of manufacturing a decorative element The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing a decorative element.

This method is characterized in that pieces of transparent material are used, these pieces are metallized before incorporating them into said hardenable material and the outer surface of the coating or plate is polished so that the pieces of transparent material reflect light passing through their polished surface and give a shine to said outer surface.

In a particular embodiment of the process forming the subject of the invention, pieces of ordinary glass, white or of different colors are used, these pieces are washed beforehand, then they are metallized by stirring them in an ar gentiferous liquor, based on silver nitrate or in a liquor containing a compound of another metal which can be reduced to a shiny metallic film. Plaster, cement, plastic or any other hardenable material is then poured into a mold and the pieces of metallized glass are distributed over the still soft material, embedded in this material and allowed to harden.

In a variant, the metallization of the pieces of glass is carried out in a known manner by vacuum vaporization.

One could also distribute the pieces of metallized glass at the bottom of the mold and pour the hardenable material on the pieces.

Once the material has hardened, the face of the plate obtained is polished until the pieces of glass appear on the surface of said plate. You can then apply a varnish to the polished surface, but this is not essential.

The part of the pieces of metallized glass embedded in the hardened mass forms a reflector for the light rays passing through the polished face of these pieces and a plate with a particular decorative effect is thus obtained, thanks to the shimmering of the pieces of glass reflecting the light.

By using, for example, a synthetic resin such as polyester or polyethylene, colored black, the metallized glass pieces have an even more marked luster by the contrast.

It is clear that instead of pieces of glass, one could use any other transparent material.

The decorative plate obtained by the method described finds numerous applications, in particular in the decoration of shop windows where it is possible to associate them with a particular lighting to bring out even better the brilliance of the pieces of metallized glass.
