Process for Hydrocracking Liquid Hydrocarbons The present invention relates to a process for hydrocracking (cracking in the presence of hydrogen) of liquid hydrocarbons comprising nitrogen compounds, which tend to inactivate the catalyst.
It is known that the petroleum fractions capable of being subjected to hydrocracking contain nitrogen compounds which tend to rapidly inactivate hydrocracking catalysts. It has been proposed to treat the materials to be hydrocracked with a view to reducing the nitrogen content thereof. For example, it has been proposed to contact these materials with acids, with acidic ion exchange resins, etc., to decrease the nitrogen content. The latter can also be lowered by a relatively gentle hydrogenation. These treatments aim to reduce the nitrogen content of the raw materials to less than 10 parts per million, and preferably not more than 2 parts per million.
It is clear that treating the material to remove nitrogen therefrom increases the cost of hydrocracking.
The process of the invention is characterized in that said catalyst is placed in a hydrocracking reaction zone, in that a temperature and pressure suitable for hydrocracking are maintained in said zone, and in which causes liquid hydrocarbons to enter the reaction zone in a downward direction, in that hydrogen is introduced into the lower part of the reaction zone and made to rise through the catalyst of hydrocracking, and in that at least 80% of the hydrocracked product is vapor removed from the top of the reaction zone.
The single figure of the appended drawing represents, by way of example, a reactor for a particular implementation of the process according to the invention. This reactor, designated as a whole by the reference 10, contains a distributor device 12 in its upper part. This device 12 comprises a lower wire mesh 12a, which supports a bed of fragments of quartz or a similar porous particulate solid. The upper surface of the quartz fragments is covered with a similar metal mesh 12b. A similar dispensing device 14 is located in the lower part of the reactor.
This device also comprises a metal mesh 14a supporting a bed of quartz fragments, which is also covered with an upper mesh 14b. The positive distributor 14, and more especially the wire mesh 14b, supports a bed of a solid hydrocracking catalyst, which is in the form of pellets or other solid particles. The reactor space defined by the lattices 14b and I2a is normally substantially filled with catalyst. The raw material enters the reactor via a pipe 16 passing through a pump 18. The end 16a of the pipe 16 is arranged in a pipe 20 for the outlet of the product.
Preferably, substantially all of the hydrocracked products exit through line 20.
The reactor 10 is connected at its base to a pipe 22 in which is interposed a compressor 24. The hydrogen necessary for the process, which can be pure hydrogen or a gas rich in hydrogen containing, for example, 85. % hydrogen enters the reactor through line 22 ,. below the positive distributor 14, and rises through the reactor, any excess hydrogen leaving the reactor through the product line 20.
The reactor also comprises a pipe 26 which, under certain working conditions, is used to withdraw product from the reactor. The product exiting through line 26, however, never constitutes more than a small fraction of the total product leaving the reactor, and no more than about 20% of the total product. The product possibly exiting through line 26 can be recycled into the reactor.
This apparatus operates as follows: the hydrocracking reaction is started by first filling the reactor space comprised between the devices 12 and 14 with a solid hydrocracking catalyst in the form of pellets. or par ticles. Then, hydrogen is circulated through the catalyst bed under a relative pressure of 52.5 kg / cm 2. The catalyst bed is heated to a set temperature, which is generally about 3990 C, and the hydrogen is circulated through the bed until the catalyst is reduced. Then, the hydrogen pressure is raised to the desired hydrocracking pressure.
Before the introduction of the raw material into the reactor, it is appropriate that the temperature prevailing therein is 4 to 380 ° C. lower than the desired reaction temperature, because the hydrocracking reaction is exothermic. This start-up at high temperature pre comes poisoning of the catalyst by nitrogen compounds contained in the raw material.
It is clear that, in the method according to the invention, the circulation is neither parallel current nor countercurrent, but that it has characteristics of these two types of processes. The path of the average particle of material undergoing treatment is shown by curve 30. The raw material entering the reactor 10 through line 16 flows up and down and countercurrently with respect to the hydrogen entering the reactor. reactor via line 22, and this as long as the raw material or the products remain essentially in the liquid phase.
However, since at least about 80%, and preferably at least 90% of the product exits the top of the reactor, the product particles are vaporized during the reaction and flow in an upward direction, parallel to the reaction. hydrogen in contact with the catalyst bed. It has been found that when the conditions are chosen such that at least 90% of the product leaves the head of the reactor, the catalyst remains active for long periods of time.
It is obvious that the process conditions, i.e. temperatures, pressures, space velocities, hydrogen circulation, etc., vary depending on the nature of the raw material, the product desired, and depending on the other variables. However, these process variables are those which are usual in conventional hydrocracking processes and, in general, they are chosen so that the raw material enters in a liquid state and the desired product exits in the form of a liquid. condensable vapors. Thus, the temperatures can be between 357 and 5101, C and are usually between 371 and 454.1 C.
The space velocities (hourly space velocity of the liquid) can vary from 0.2 to 3.0 and are preferably between 0.5 and 1.5. The hydrogen circulation flow rate, measured in normal m3 of hydrogen per 1001 of raw material, can vary from 21 to <B> 180 </B> normal m3 of hydrogen, or more, per 1001 of raw material. It will be noted that in the examples which follow, the indications in normal m3 of hydrogen per 1001 of raw material are based on a hydrogen content of 100%. For the production of boiler fuel oil, the hydrogen circulation rate must be greater than <B> 180 </B> normal m3 of hydrogen per 1001 of raw material.
Without wishing to limit the invention by theory, it is recognized that at least substantially all of the hydrocracking takes place while the material is in the liquid phase and the products leave the top of the reactor in the vapor phase. In some cases, the light components of the raw material can vaporize and exit the reactor without significant conversion. As mentioned, at least 80% of the product must exit the reactor from the top.
If the process is carried out in this way, it can be continued for a long time without the composition of the product changing, showing that the catalyst has not aged, although the raw material may contain nitrogen compounds.
Tables are presented below containing data relating to a certain number of tests in accordance with the method according to the invention and of comparative tests which are outside the scope of the invention. Table I shows the data relating to the application of the present process to the two raw materials which are identified in the table.
The hydrocracking catalyst employed in the tests summarized in Table I is a nickel-tungsten catalyst supported on a silica-alumina composite containing 75% silica and 25% alumina by weight. Complete catalyst includes 6%
nickel and 19% tungsten by weight of the finished catalyst. The catalyst also contains 1.5% by weight of fluorine.
In Table I and in the following tables, N: PPM means parts of nitrogen in one million parts of raw material by weight. S:% by weight means percent sulfur by weight of the raw material. VEHL designates the hourly space velocity of the liquid.
The results below show that, under the conditions indicated, both Virgin >> boiler fuel oil and heavy gas oil from the product of fluid catalytic cracking can both be effectively hydrocracked by the process according to the invention. . The table also shows that in order to find the optimum conditions for a particular raw material, it is desirable to carry out one or more tests, however respecting the limits of conditions specified in this disclosure.

<tb> Test <SEP> N @ <SEP>. <SEP> ..... <SEP> 1 <SEP> 2 <SEP> 3 <SEP> 4 It can be seen that in tests 1 and 2, all of the product supplied by the reactor came out through the top of the reactor.
However, by comparing the results of these two tests, it can be seen that test 1 gave a better result. The specific gravity (, I API) of the product is higher and more gasoline was obtained. Thus, for this raw material with a relatively low boiling temperature, a relative pressure of 140 kg / cm 2 is more advantageous than a relative pressure of 70 kg / cm. In test 2, although the product came out from the top, it appears that the conversion was low because, under a relative pressure of 70 kg / cm2,
the raw material vaporized rapidly and did not remain in contact with the catalyst for a sufficient time to be hydrocracked.
From tests 3 and 4, in which the starting material is a heavy gas oil obtained from the product of a fluid catalytic cracking, it appears that the process according to the invention gives excellent results on this type of material. first, although it contains 560 PPM of nitrogen. The results of these tests show that the decrease in activity of the catalyst is minimal or zero. In test 4, 100% of the product was collected at the top during 100 hours of operation and the specific weight of the product remained substantially the same throughout the test. This denotes minimal or no aging of the catalyst with a raw material the hydrocracking of which is particularly difficult because of its high nitrogen content.
Test 3, under a relative pressure of 210 kg / cm 2, was also successful.
The achievable results are further illustrated by the treatment of a gas oil fraction obtained by vacuum distillation of a Kuwait crude oil. The analysis of this diesel gave the following values

These tests are especially interesting in that, although 89% of the product still exits the top of the reactor after 60 hours of operation in test 18, the activity of the catalyst decreases appreciably in this test.
whereas in test 14 no decrease in the activity of the catalyst is observable when more than 90% of the product exits from the top of the reactor. It can be deduced from this that an operation in which 80% of the product exits from the top is reasonably satisfactory, although the catalyst may lose its activity, whereas the catalyst fully retains its activity when at least 90% of the product comes out on top.

<SEP> 19 <SEP> 20 <SEP> 21 <SEP> 22 <SEP> 23 <SEP> 24 <SEP> 25 With the exception of test 19, all the tests described in this table come within the scope of the invention, at least 80% of the product leaving the top of the reactor. In run 19, the temperature was apparently too low for the hydrocracking to reach the desired degree.
The absence of cracking in tests 22, 23 and 24 results from a combination of high temperature and low pressure causing the raw material to vaporize and leave the reactor without remaining in contact with the catalyst. for a sufficient time for hydrocracking to take place.
Any solid hydrocracking catalyst can be used for carrying out the process according to the invention, for example a catalyst comprising platinum or palladium deposited on an acidic support, such as an alumina composite. and silica, or silica and magnesia. These catalysts can be inactivated by prolonged contact with sulfur at high temperature. Therefore, the hydrocracking catalysts employed are preferably sulfactive catalysts, such as the nickel-catalyst as a light raw material, from catalytic cracking, in a hydrocracking reactor containing the nickel-tungsten catalyst described above. .
