Process for optical brightening
The present invention relates to a process for optical brightening, with the exception of the treatment of textile fibers in the textile industry, which is characterized in that fluorescent, practically colorless coumarin compounds of the general formula are used
EMI1.1
in which R stands for hydrogen or a lower alkyl radical and Rt stands for hydrogen or an alkyl, oxyalkyl, alkoxyalkyl, haloalkyl, cyanoalkyl, carboxyalkyl, sulfoalkyl, alkenyl, aralkyl, aryl, arylketoalkyl radical, for an acyl - Or carbamyl radical or for the grouping
EMI1.2
where R stands for hydrogen or a lower alkyl radical and R2 and R3 independently of one another mean an optionally substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl radical, n and R4,
RÏ and R5 are identical or different, optionally substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl radicals, while X stands for the divalent radical t of an aliphatic hydrocarbon with preferably 1 to 4 carbon atoms and Y stands for an inorganic or organic acid radical, where the aromatic rings can also contain other substituents with the exception of the nitro group.
Those compounds in which R is hydrogen are particularly suitable. Cumariaverbindun- of the above formula, which basic groups, z. B. tertiary or quaternary amino groups, are suitable for lightening materials made of polyacrylonitrile or cellulose esters, while coumarin compounds containing acidic groups, especially the sulfo group, z. B. suitable for lightening textile articles of daily use made of wool. Such coumarin compounds of the above formula which contain neither acid nor basic groups and which are consequently sparingly soluble in water can be used particularly well for lightening materials made of synthetic polyamides and polyurethanes and for lightening materials made of polyacrylonitrile or cellulose esters.
The aromatic rings contained in the coumarin compounds of the above formula can also contain other substituents with the exception of the nitro group, for example halogens, alkyl, aralkyl or aryl groups, alkoxy, aralkoxy or aryloxy groups, amino, alkylamino or dialkylamino groups, the radicals - NHCO-alkyl, NHCO-aryl, NHCONH-alkyl or -NHCONH aryl, the carboxyl group, which can also be esterified, and carbonamide or sulfonamide groups, which can also be substituted by alkyl, aralkyl or aryl radicals.
The optical brightening agents to be used according to the invention can be obtained by various processes, for example by reacting 2,4-dioxybenzaldehyde or its substitution products with phenylacetic acid or its functional derivatives and substitution products.
Suitable substitution products of 2,4-dioxybenzaldehyde are, for example, the following: 5-methyl-2,4-dioxybenzaldehyde, 5-chloro -2,4-dioxybenzaldehyde, 5-bromo-2,4-dioxybenzaldehyde, 5 - Methoxy -2,4- dioxybenzaldehyde, 5 acetyiamino - 2,4- dioxybenzaldehyde, 4-methoxy -2- oxybenzaldehyde, 4-ethoxy -2- oxybenzaldehyde, 4 B enzyloxy-2-oxybenzaldehyde.
Suitable functional derivatives and substitution products of phenylacetic acid include: a. named: B enzyl cyanide, 4-chlorobenzyl cyanide, 3-bromobenzyl cyanide, 4-methoxybenzyl cyanide, 4-aminobenzyl cyanide, 4-acetylaminobenzyl cyanide, the methyl, ethyl, propyl or butyl esters of phenylacetic acid, bromoacetic acid, 2-chlorophenyl acetic acid of 4-methoxyphenylacetic acid or 4-acetylaminophenylacetic acid.
If the oxy group in the 7-position of the coumarin ring system formed is still free, it can be reacted in an alkaline medium - for example in the presence of sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, potassium carbonate, sodium amide or sodium methylate - with alkylating agents, for example with dimethyl sulfate, diethyl sulfate, methyl iodide, ethyljo did , Isopropyl iodide, butyl bromide, allyl bromide, benzyl chloride, w-chloroacetophenone, chloroacetic acid, chloroacetamide, chloroethanesulfonic acid, methylene bromide, 2-dimethylaminoethyl chloride or 2-diethylaminoethyl chloride.
Oxy groups or primary or secondary amino groups present in the coumarin compounds formed can be acylated or with isocyanates, e.g. B. methyl or phenyl isocyanate, be converted into carbamic acid ester groups or urea groups.
If tertiary amino groups are present in the coumarin compounds, they can be quaternized. For this purpose, the coumarin compounds are dissolved in an inert solvent, for example in acetone, toluene, chlorobenzene or chloroform, and they are reacted with a quaternizing agent, for example with dimethyl sulfate, diethyl sulfate, methyl iodide, ethyl iodide. Butyl bromide, benzyl chloride or 4-toluenesulfonic acid methyl and ethyl ester.
Sulfo groups can be introduced by treating the coumarin compounds in a manner known per se with a sulfating agent, for example with sulfuric acid monohydrate, oleum or chlorosulfonic acid. Sulphonic acid groups bonded via an aliphatic radical can also be introduced by reacting a 7-oxycoumarin compound in the form of its alkali metal salt with a sultone, for example butane sultone.
The coumarin compounds mentioned can be used in the usual way, for example in the form of solutions in water or in organic solvents or in the form of aqueous dispersions, for which, for example, condensation products of naphthalenesulfonic acids and formaldehyde can be used as dispersants. The lightening agents can also be used together with detergents. Furthermore, they can also be added to spinning or casting compounds which are used to produce artificial fibers, threads, foils or other structures.
The lightening agents used according to the invention are very economical. They are also very resistant to chlorite bleach. The coumarin compounds previously proposed as lightening agents do not have these advantageous properties to the same extent.
The parts given in the following example are parts by weight.
example 1
A stock solution is prepared from 10 parts of polyacrylonitrile, 80 parts of dimer thylformamide and 10 parts of one of the whitening agents described below; this is added to a conventional polyacrylonitrile spinning solution in such an amount that the concentration of the whitening agent in the spun polyacrylonitrile material is 0.25 percent by weight. The spinning solution is then spun in a conventional manner and the fiber material formed is bleached in a bath containing sodium chlorite.
The white effect obtained in this way is excellent.
The lightening agents used were prepared in the following way:
9.0 parts of 7-oxy-3-phenylcoumarin were dissolved in 80 parts of alcohol with heating and the solution was admixed dropwise with 35 parts of the above sodium carbonate solution and then with 7.1 parts of dimethyl sulfate or with 8.6 parts of diethyl sulfate .
After the reaction mixture had been refluxed for 1 hour, it was cooled. The resulting precipitate was filtered off with suction and, after recrystallization from methanol, yielded 7-methoxy-3-phenyl-cumarin with a melting point of 125-126 "C or 7-ethoxy-3-phenylcoumarin with a melting point of 164 to 1650 C.
Example 2
A mixture of 65 parts of polyvinyl chloride and 35 parts of a plasticizer based on dioctyl phthalate is mixed with 2 parts of titanium oxide anatase and 0.1 part of 7-methoxy -3-phenyl-coumarin. The mass is homogenized in a mixer and plasticized on the hot roll. After processing on the calender, a PVC skin with a high degree of whiteness is obtained.
Example 3
100 parts of polystyrene are intimately mixed with 1 part of titanium dioxide (rutile) and 0.2 part of 7-methoxy-3- (p-methylphenyl) coumarin and plasticized in the extruder. The emerging mass is granulated and injected in an injection molding machine at 200.
Injection molded parts with an excellent degree of whiteness are thus obtained.
