Ordnung vorwiegend in Betracht kommen:
I.

The present invention relates to the use of special compounds containing ethylene double bonds as optical brighteners for preferably organic materials outside the textile industry.
The compounds to be used according to the invention correspond to the general formula
EMI1.1
wherein the symbols At and A2 are a hydrogen atom, a
Phenyl or diphenylyl-4 radical, the symbols B1 and B2 are intended to represent that each of the two phenyl groups of the
Diphenyl skeleton can contain further linear or angularly fused benzene rings, p stands for an integer from 1 to 3 and W4 is an a-naphthyl, B-naphthyl, phenyl,
Diphenylyl-4, pyridyl-3, thienyl-2 or furyl-2 radical denotes, where the radical W4 denotes one to three substituents Q1 meaning a hydrogen atom, an alkoxy group, the phenoxy group, a halogen atom, and more than 1 carbon atom containing alkyl group, a dialkylamino group or a methylenedioxy group, and n is an integer from 1 to 2,
and wherein the free positions of the diphenyl nucleus can be occupied by substituents of the first order which are free of atoms which can be replaced by alkali metal.
The use of a) compounds of the formula is of preferred importance
EMI1.2
where the styryl radicals of this formula are preferably in the 4,4 'position of the diphenyl nucleus, Q2 is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group containing 2 to 18 carbon atoms, an alkoxy group containing 1 to 12 carbon atoms, a chlorine atom, a methylenedioxy group, RX is hydrogen or other substituents 1 .
Order which are free of atoms which can be replaced by alkali metal, and n is an integer from 1 to 2, b) compounds of the formula
EMI1.3
wherein W'4 is an α-naphthyl, ß-naphthyl, diphenylyl-4 (methylenedioxy-3,4) phenyl or a phenyl radical
EMI1.4
where Rz is an alkyl group containing 2 to 4 carbon atoms, an alkoxy group containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms or a phenoxy group, Ry is an alkoxy group containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, p is the numbers 1 to 3 and n is the numbers 1 or 2 .
The compounds to be used according to the invention can be prepared by reacting suitable methylbenzene compounds - as defined below - with an appropriate Schiff base, the reaction being carried out in the presence of a strongly basic alkali compound and anhydrous dimethylformamide being used as the reaction medium and in the case of using alkali metal hydroxides as strongly basic alkali compounds, these alkali hydroxides may have a water content of up to 25%.
Within the framework of these conditions, the use of a strongly basic potassium compound as the strongly basic alkali compound and the use of an anil of an aromatic aldehyde containing 1 to 4 rings with 5 to 6 ring members as the Schiff's base are of interest for practical purposes.
Methylbenzene compounds suitable for the manufacturing process are e.g. B. for compounds of the formula (1), those of the formula
EMI2.1
wherein the symbols A1, A2, B1, B2 and p have the meaning given above, where a) the methyl groups given in the formula must be bonded to ring carbon atoms of the benzene rings of the formula, and b) the benzene rings bearing methyl groups free of second-order substituents and such substituents 1.
Should be order containing atoms that can be replaced by alkali metal.
Completely correspondingly, compounds of the formula are used as starting materials for the preparation of compounds of the formula (2)
EMI2.2
used, in which R1 is hydrogen or other first-order substituents which are free of atoms which can be replaced by alkali metal, and n is an integer from 1 to 2.
With regard to the possibilities of substitution in the case of compounds according to the above formulas, it should be explained that the first-order substituents are primarily:
Halogen such as fluorine, chlorine or bromine, alkyl groups with more than 2 carbon atoms, usually containing no more than 18 and preferably up to 12 carbon atoms, optionally branched in nature, cycloalkyl groups such as cyclohexyl, alkoxy groups with 1 to 18, preferably 1 to 6 carbon atoms and their sulfur analogues ( Alkyl mercapto groups) Dialkylamino groups, preferably with higher alkyl groups, aryl (especially phenyl) oxy groups and phenyl mercapto groups.
In addition to this group of substituents of predominant interest, other substituents which meet the requirements set out above can of course also be present, such as. B. the trifluoromethyl group, the methylenedioxy group, etc.
The Schiff's base to be used as a second reactant in the present process must - as goes without saying - be free of reactive methyl groups, e.g. B.
those in the p-position to the azomethine group. The Schiff bases in question are in turn the (known) condensation products of aldehydes of aromatic character with primary amines (aliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic nature), the amino group of which is bonded to a tertiary carbon atom. Compounds of this type can therefore be used as azomethine compounds of Formula (6) Ar-CH = NC (tertiary) <can be written, where Ar is an aromatic radical. Both one and both of the components required to build up the Schiff's bases (aldehyde and amine) can contain further substituents - subject to the above restriction.
Of preferred interest are Schiff bases of aromatic aldehydes with anilines, that is, aromatic aldehyde-aniles.
Such aniles correspond, for example, to the formula
EMI2.3
where h is hydrogen or halogen and W4 has the meaning given above, and preferably for the remainder
EMI2.4
wherein Rx is halogen, an alkyl group containing 2 to 4 carbon atoms, a phenoxy group or an alkoxy group containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, Ry is an alkoxy group containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms and p is the numbers 1 to 3.
It is advantageous to use (especially if mild reaction conditions with regard to the reaction temperature appear appropriate) potassium compounds of the composition (8) KOCx1H2xi, where x is an integer from 1 to 6, such as. B. potassium hydroxide or potassium tertiary butoxide. In the case of alkali alcoholates, alkali amides (and hydrides), a practically anhydrous medium must be used, while with alkali hydroxides water contents of up to 25 cm (e.g. water of crystallization) are permitted. In the case of potassium hydroxide, a water content of up to about 15-15% has proven to be appropriate.
The compounds of the formula (4) or (5) are expediently reacted with the aldehyde-anils in equivalent amounts, so that there is no substantial excess of any component. It is advantageous to use at least the equivalent amount of the alkali compound, i. H. at least 1 mole of a compound with e.g. B.
a KO group to one mole of aldehydanil. When using potassium hydroxide, preferably four to eight times the amount is used.
Said reaction can generally be carried out at temperatures in the range between about 10 and 150.degree.
If alcoholates are used as the potassium compound in the reaction, the reaction often takes place at room temperature, in which case no external supply of heat is necessary. When using potassium hydroxide it is usually necessary to work at a higher temperature.
The styryl derivatives defined above are suitable for the optical brightening of the most varied of organic materials of natural or synthetic origin outside the textile industry, or materials containing organic substances for which optical brightening comes into consideration. The following groups of organic materials may be mentioned as such materials, for example, without the following list expressing any restriction thereto:
I.
Synthetic organic high molecular weight materials such as a) Polymerization products based on at least one polymerizable carbon-carbon double bond containing organic compounds, polymers based on a, ß-unsaturated carboxylic acids, olefin hydrocarbons, vinyl and vinylidene compounds, of halogenated hydrocarbons, of unsaturated ones Aldehydes and ketones, formaldehyde polymers, etc.
b) Polycondensation products or precondensates based on bi- or polyfunctional compounds with condensable groups such as polyesters, saturated and unsaturated, polyamides, etc.
c) Polyaddition products such as polyurethanes or epoxy resins.
II. Semi-synthetic organic materials such as. B.
Cellulose esters, nitrocellulose, cellulose ethers, regenerated cellulose, etc.
111. Natural organic materials of animal or vegetable origin such as e.g. B. paper.
The organic materials in question can be in the most varied of processing states (raw materials, semi-finished products or finished products) and aggregate states. Fiber materials can, for example, be in the form of endless threads, staple fibers, flakes, nonwovens, felts, wadding, flocking structures, as well as paper, cardboard or paper pulps, etc.
These compounds of the materials mentioned can be added as lightening agents before or during shaping.
The amount of new optical brighteners to be used, based on the material to be optically brightened, can vary within wide limits. Even with very small amounts, in certain cases e.g. B. those of 0.001 weight percent, a clear and durable effect can be achieved. However, amounts of up to about 0.5 percent by weight and more can also be used. For most practical purposes, amounts between 0.01 to 0.2 percent by weight are preferably of interest.
The compounds serving as lifting agents can also be used, for example, as follows: a) In a mixture with dyes or pigments: b) In mixtures with so-called carriers, antioxidants, light stabilizers, heat stabilizers, chemical bleaches or as an additive to bleach baths; c) in combination with polymeric carrier materials (polymerization, polycondensation or polyaddition products), in which the brighteners are incorporated in dissolved or dispersed form, optionally together with other substances; d) in combination with optical brighteners of other constitutions.
