Method and Plant for Continuous Casting of Molten Steel The continuous casting of steel ingots presents serious difficulties if the steel is aluminum-quenched or if it contains elements such as silicon. , chromium, manganese, etc.
The difficulties arise mainly from gaseous or solid inclusions separating at the surface or in the center of the taste flax.
These inclusions are produced by the oxidation of the aforementioned elements when they come into contact with air. To eliminate the influence of air, it has been proposed to add a synthetic slag to the top of the mold or the water-cooled mold.
This process has a serious drawback if the slag on the liquid steel in the mold filters between the steel and the internal walls of the mold, thereby delaying the solidification of the steel. The delay in solidification causes hot spots to appear on the surface of the ingot, resulting in liquid steel flowing out of the mold.
Such leakage of molten steel can seriously damage the continuous casting plant.
The present invention aims to remedy these drawbacks and relates to a process for the continuous casting of steel ingots, in which the molten metal is brought from a casting ladle into a lin- getter,
this process is distinguished by the fact that molten metal is passed through an intermediate tank placed above the mold,
a synthetic slag is added to the molten metal passing through said tank to protect the molten metal against the influence of air at that location and in that the molten metal flowing out of said is subjected tank in an atmosphere of neutral gas to prevent the oxidation of this metal before it arrives in the mold and
eliminate hot spots at least on the surface of the ingot. In a particular implementation of the aforementioned process, said neutral gas, for example argon, helium, crypton, etc., is continuously injected around the molten metal exiting the vessel. intermediate.
The invention also comprises an installation for carrying out the above process and comprising in a known manner a ladle for the molten metal and an ingot mold into which said molten metal is poured.
This installation is characterized by a tank at its lower part and into which the molten metal is poured from the casting ladle, by a casing placed on the mold and surrounding at least the lower part of said tank,
and by means for injecting an inert gas into said shell so as to come into contact with the molten metal flowing from the vessel.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the installation which the invention comprises.
Fig. 1 is a schematic perspective view of the installation.
Fig. 2 is an axial sectional view thereof. The installation shown is used for the casting of steel flavors and comprises a ladle 1 for -the molten metal -from a furnace and an ingot 2 into which said molten metal will finally be poured. . The pouring ladle 1 has its bottom pierced with a
opening 3 for the flow of molten steel. A tank 4 open at its lower part at 5 comprises an internal partition 6 @ and is mounted in the upper part of a casing 7 placed on the mold 2.
Protrusions 8 produced by the casing 7 form consoles on which the tank 4 rests, leaving a free space 9 around the lower part of the tank 4.
The envelope 7 is retained at its lower part by a flange 10 integral with the mold 2. And a gasket 11 forms a tight seal over the entire periphery of the envelope. The inner wall of the casing 7 is formed of a refractory material 12 and its outer wall of a metal sheet 13. A duct 14 surrounds the casing 7 and is connected to passages 15 opening into the interior. of this envelope by a sprinkler head 16. Conduits 14 'bring gas into the conduit 14 as shown by the arrows from a source not shown.
The operation of the installation described is as follows. The molten steel is brought from the neck pocket 1 into the intermediate vessel 4 through the opening 3. A synthetic slag is added to the molten metal in the tank 4 to protect the metal against the influence of air at this location.
Then a neutral gas such as argon, crypton or helium coming from line 14 is injected through the spray heads 16 around the molten metal coming out of the opening 5 of the tank 4 to prevent the oxidation of this metal before it arrives in the mold 2. The gases filling the interior space of the casing 7 escape through the free space 9 represented by the arrows.
It is understood that the injection of neutral gas into the casing 7 could be carried out other than by the sprinkler heads 16. One could for example use a pierced tube placed inside this casing and connected to a or several external conduits for the gas supply.
The advantage of the installation described is that it makes it possible to eliminate hot spots on the surface and / or inside the ingot, thereby avoiding overflow of the molten metal and the resulting damage.
