So verwendet man z.

Process for the production of aromatic hydrocarbons The present invention relates to a process for the production of aromatic hydrocarbons of the general formula
EMI0001.0000
where R1, R2, R3, R4, R5 and R6 are identical or different and represent hydrogen or hydrocarbon radicals from acetylenically unsaturated compounds of the formula R7-C = C-R8, where R7 and R8 are identical or different and are hydrogen or Hydrocarbon radicals mean, characterized in that the catalysts used are oxyhalides or halides of niobium or tantalum or coordination compounds of these halides.
Numerous processes are already known which have the formation or production of chain-shaped or ring-shaped compounds from acetylene or acetylene derivatives as their object. In particular, the recovery of aromatic compounds from acetylene has gained increasing interest due to the increasing demand in the art.
In the known Berthelot process, acetylene is passed through glowing glass tubes, benzene and other aromatic compounds being formed to a lesser extent, along with considerable amounts of undesirable by-products such as carbon and tar.
It was therefore the aim of more recent work to enable the cyclization of acetylene at lower temperatures, especially by adding suitable catalysts. So one uses z. B. According to Reppe, complex nickel compounds that are obtained by reacting nickel carbonyl with triphenylphosphine. In this cyclization process, however, an overpressure of 15 atmospheres is required, which means that special technical precautions and safety measures are required to avoid the risk of explosion.
Surprisingly, it has now been found that the production of aromatic compounds, in a relatively low temperature range and at normal or at most slightly elevated pressure, from acetylene, acetylene derivatives of the type mentioned or from mixtures thereof is possible if the aforementioned compounds are used as catalysts used. The disadvantages associated with the above-mentioned methods are thus avoided by the present invention.
Advantageously, the process according to the invention is suitable for the preparation of trisubstituted benzenes, which contain alkyl, hydroxylalkyl, alkenyl, aryl or cycloalkyl groups as substituents, from acetylene homologues of the general formula R9-C CHCH, where Rg denotes an alkyl, an alkenyl, or a cycloalkyl group.
Furthermore, it is possible according to the new process to produce disubstituted and monosubstituted benzenes by z. B. a mixture of acetylene homologues and acetylene is used as the starting material.
The process according to the invention is particularly suitable for the production of benzene from acetylene. The oxyhalides and halides of niobium or tantalum used as catalysts according to the invention can be present in various valency levels. It is particularly advantageous to use the halides of niobium or tantalum or the higher complex compounds of these halides, for example double salts, such as are obtained by adding alkali metal halides or alkaline earth metal halides to the halides of the abovementioned elements.
Mixtures of the halides of niobium or tantalum or the corresponding double salts can also be used successfully, furthermore oxyhalides, for example oxychlorides of mob or tantalum, or mixtures of these oxyhalides with halides of niobium or tantalum.
In particular, the use of NbCl5 or TaCl5 as a catalyst in the production of benzene from acetylene according to the process according to the invention leads to a surprisingly good result.
The method according to the invention can be carried out in various ways. So you can z. B. carry out the reaction in the gas phase, the catalyst being used in solid, preferably anhydrous form, conveniently in a heatable reaction tube and a constant gas stream containing the starting material is passed over the catalyst. The catalyst can also be placed on a porous support, where appropriate activation of the catalyst / support system, eg. B. by heating at a suitable temperature, before the A rate in the reaction is appropriate.
The catalyst itself or the catalyst / support system can still be inert filling materials, such as. B. contain pumice stones or asbestos. By deforming in the usual way, e.g. B. in an extruder, by granulating or pilling, the catalyst mass can also be given the particle size which is most favorable for the particular reaction apparatus used.
The speed of the gas flow, which the starting material, z. B. the acetylene contains, can vary within wide limits and is expediently determined in apparatuses of different sizes and with different amounts of catalyst by an orienting preliminary test in its optimal value. Optionally, the gas stream can also be inert gas, e.g. B. nitrogen beige are mixed.
In the above embodiment of the process, the temperature prevailing inside the reaction space can also fluctuate within relatively wide limits.
In the case of the production of benzene according to the present invention, a temperature range between 80 and 200 ° C. has proven to be very expedient.
It is possible to produce the desired end product, e.g. B. benzene, from which the reaction chamber leave the gas stream to isolate, z. B. by condensation at a suitable low temperature and the given if still present in the gas stream proportions of un consumed starting gas, z. B. acetylene, fed back to the catalyst in a cycle. However, it is also possible to proceed in such a way that the entire gas stream leaving the reaction chamber, provided it still contains unconverted proportions of the starting gas, is again fed to the catalyst in the reaction chamber in the cycle.
The catalyst to be used can be suspended in an inert and suitably anhydrous organic solvent and a stream containing the compound used as starting material in the reaction can be passed into the suspension. The beginning of the reaction is recognized by the fact that the gas introduced is absorbed by the suspension to a significant extent. The suspension is optionally brought to the desired temperature before or during the introduction of the gas stream.
Aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic compounds can be used as solvents. It is particularly expedient to choose a solvent whose boiling point differs so greatly from the boiling point of the end product to be obtained that the solvent and end product can be separated from one another by distillation.
For example, in the case of the production of benzene according to the invention, it is possible to choose a suitable solvent which has a correspondingly higher boiling point than benzene, and to use a temperature inside the suspension which is between the boiling point of benzene and the higher boiling point of this solvent is to continuously distill the benzene formed from the reaction vessel and isolate it.
Methyleyclohexane and m-xylene, for example, or mixtures of these two have proven to be suitable solvents. <I> Example<B>1</B> </I> In a reaction tube, which is located in an electrically heated tube furnace, <B> 3.78 g </B> NbC15 are placed in an aluminum oxide boat and a continuous stream of nitrogen was passed through the reaction tube. At the exit of the reaction tube there is a cold trap, which is kept at a temperature of about <B> - 50 ° C </B> and serves to take up the reaction products, followed by an empty wash bottle and finally a wash bottle with 1N NaOH .
At a temperature of <B> 100 'C </B> inside the pipe, about <B> 3 </B> liters / hour of acetylene was passed through, with an exothermic reaction occurring and <B> 801 C </B> cooled and introduced 400 ml of acetylene per minute, soft amount is completely absorbed by the solution.
After 16¸ hours of reaction time, acetylene is still taken up in unchanged amounts by the suspension.
With a total uptake of about 400 liters of acetylene, <B> 310 g </B>: benzene purified by repeated distillation was obtained.
b) 2.97 g of TaCl5 are added to 250 ml of m-xylene in a suitable 4-necked flask and kept in suspension with the aid of a vibration mixer. The reaction that starts after heating to 100 ° C is interrupted after the suspension has taken up 30 liters of acetylene. About 20 g of benzene purified by rectification are obtained, which has the following physical data: Boiling point: 800 C, Melting point: 2 to 41 B > C, </B> n 20 <B> <I>: </I> 1,500 </B> (Literature: <B> 1,500). </B> <B> D </B> In the reaction were 2.23 moles <B> 11C1 </B> developed per mole of TaCl5.
c) In a 1500 ml-4 necked flask with reflux condenser, 10 g TaCl5 are suspended in 400 ml methylcyclohexane under nitrogen. Instead of nitrogen, acetylene is then introduced into the flask and the contents of the flask are heated to <B> 90 '</B>. Then an amount of 100 ml of m-xylene is added all at once, whereupon an increasing absorption of the acetylene in the suspension begins. After 40 minutes, an acetylene uptake rate of 470 ml / min is reached, this value being kept constant by regulating the supply of acetylene. The temperature in the flask is kept at <B> 85-89 '</B> for <B> 6 </B> hours and then lowered to <B> 77-801 </B>, uni too much. to avoid violent reflux of the benzene formed in the condenser.
After <B> 525 </B> liters of acetylene have been absorbed, the process is interrupted and the strongly increased flask contents are filtered. Around 20 g of a black catalyst residue are isolated, which has the following composition: 25.8% Ta, 19.65% Cl, 46.7% H. Distillation turns the filtrate into <B> 799 g of an enriched benzene that still contains 29.3% methylcyclohexane (determined by gas chromatography), i.e. with an acetylene conversion of <B> 525 </B> liters <B> (= 575 g) 565 g of benzene are obtained, which corresponds to a yield of over 95%.
<B> (1) </B> When carrying out the above reaction using 500 ml of Shellsol T (a mixture of aliphatic hydrocarbons from Shell Chem. Corp., commercially available under this brand name) as the solvent and at a temperature of < B> 831 </B> a similar result is achieved. An immediate onset of the reaction at 800 can be achieved by moving the into the reaction chamber. a small amount of isoprene is added to the incoming acetylene gas stream, expediently by injecting the isoprene into the hose wall with the aid of an injection needle. The suspension turns yellow immediately. and then black; the entering acetylene. is completely absorbed by the solvent at an inflow rate of 600 ml / min and almost completely converted to benzene.
e) In the apparatus described under c) who slurried 10 g of TaCl5 in 400 ml of methyleyclohexane. After the suspension has been heated to <B> 60 '</B>, 3.3 g of butadiene are introduced together with acetylene. An exothermic reaction immediately sets in, which continues even when the incoming gas stream no longer contains butadiene. The temperature is kept at <B> 55 '</B> by cooling. After the absorption of 84 liters of acetylene (in an amount of 500 ml / min), the reaction is stopped. <B> 80 g </B> of pure benzene and <B> 1 g </B> of an unspecified <B> oil </B> can be isolated from the template.
f) In a 1000 ml flask equipped with a reflux condenser, 10 g TaCl5 are stirred up under argon in a mixture of 300 ml Shellsol T (brand name) and 100 ml m-xylene. The argon is then displaced by acetylene and the contents of the flask are heated to <B> 73 '</B>. Within <B> 3 </B> hours, the rapid onset of acetylene uptake increases to 630 ml / min and is maintained at this value by throttling the supply. The temperature is lowered to about <B> 55 "</B> by cooling with ice water. After a reaction time of <B> 6 </B> hours, the reflux condenser and the reaction flask with a condensation vessel are removed due to the strong increase in volume in the flask connected.
By increasing the temperature to 65-70 'and passing a weak stream of argon through it, it is possible to distill enough benzene from the flask to keep the amount of liquid in the flask at the desired level. There were a total of 560 liters (= 610 g) of acetylene from the Sus pension in. Piston added. The work-up by filtration and distillation gave 20.2 g black catalyst residue (25.05 Ta; 17.85% Cl; 48.4% C; 4.0 / 10 H) and <B> 600 g </B> of pure benzene, corresponding to a yield of over 95% of theory.
<B><I>g)</I> </B> 6.7 g TaBr5 in 400 ml methylcyclohexane are distributed in the apparatus described under c). The slurry is heated to 80 '> while passing nitrogen into the apparatus and 4 g of isoprene are added, this being completely absorbed by the solvent with an exothermic reaction and practically completely converted to benzene.
h) If the TaBr.5 is slurried in a mixture consisting of 400 ml of the aliphatic hydrocarbon mixture commercially available under the brand name Shellsol T and <B> 100 </B> ml of m-xylene, absorption also occurs at 120 ' which increases the temperature in the reaction tube to about 120 ° C. The yellow NbCl5 turns black with a considerable increase in volume. The benzene formed is frozen in the cold trap, the hydrochloric acid, which occurs as a by-product, is caught in the sodium hydroxide solution.
The following table shows the results of various throughputs, which are carried out with increasing temperatures.

<I> Example 2 </I> a) To 450 ml of anhydrous m-xylene, which are located in a 1000 ml 4-necked flask equipped with a reflux condenser, 5.92 g of NbCl5 are added while introducing nitrogen kept in suspension with the aid of a vibratory mixer. The yellow NbCl5 turns orange-brown on contact with xylene. After the suspension has been heated to 80 ', acetylene is passed through a tube immersed in the suspension, the color of the mixture changing from blue-green to black. The uptake of acetylene is measured by <B> each </B> a flow meter at the inlet and outlet of the apparatus.
With an absorption of 200 to 290 ml / min, 45 liters of acetylene were taken up by the suspension; this corresponds to an amount of <B> 7.6 </B> liters of acetylene / g NbCl5.
At the temperature prevailing in the reaction vessel it is possible, after removing the reflux condenser and connecting the reaction vessel to a cooled receiver, to continuously distill the benzene formed from the suspension and collect it in the receiver.
In the above experiment, about 10 g of pure benzene were obtained after rectification of the benzene condensed in the receiver.
The pure benzene obtained showed the following physical data: Melting point: 3-4 'C, Boiling point: 78-80' C, n20 = 1,500; </ B> n20 theoretically: <B> 1.500. </B> <B> DD </B> <B><I>b)</I> </B> Carrying out the above-described reaction at temperatures of <B> 10, <I> 50, </I> 100 </B> and <B> 1301 </B> led in a corresponding manner to the formation of benzene, with a particularly good yield in the case of <B> 1000 </ B> carried out reaction was to be determined.
c) Carrying out the reaction described above at a temperature of <B> 50 '</B> and using one of the following solvents (instead of m-xylene): carbon tetrachloride, methylcyclohexane or the aliphatic hydrocarbon mixture Shellsol T (the Shell Chem. Corp. protected trade name) (absorbed amount of acetylene: 7.1 1 /, g NBCl5), likewise led in a corresponding manner to the formation of benzene. A particularly good yield was achieved in the case of using methyleyclohexane as solvent; the catalyst suspension showed no decrease in its effectiveness after about 3 hours of operation.
<I> Example<B>3</B> </I> a) To a mixture of 500 ml methylcyclohexane and 100 ml m-xylene, which are in a suitable 4-necked flask, <B> 10, 3 g TaC15 are given and kept in suspension with the aid of a vibratory mixer. After heating to 9 81 C for a period of 10 minutes, the orange-colored solution takes up acetylene to a considerable extent, turning green and finally black. After the reaction has started, the solution turns on acetylene and converts it to benzene.
<B> 1) </B> In the apparatus described under c), 10 g of NbCl5 were stirred in 400 ml of m-xylene and the suspension was then cooled to <B> 0 \ </B>. When acetylene is subsequently introduced, 450 ml / min are absorbed immediately. The contents of the flask are then cooled to -201 and another 412 liters (= 450 g) of acetylene are introduced. After the introduction has ended, the usual separation gives 326 g of benzene, corresponding to a yield of 72% of theory.
k) 8.35 g of TaCl5 was slurried in 350 ml of Shellsol T in a 1500 ml, 4-neck flask. The contents of the flask were then heated to <B> 300 </B> and acetylene was introduced. Immediate absorption was achieved by adding 0.2 g NbCl5 through a side port of the reaction flask, with 155 liters of acetylene being converted within 125 min . Working up the reaction products gave 125 g of benzene and 27 g of catalyst residue.
Instead of adding TaCl5 and NbCl5 separately, TaCl5 crystals can also be used from the start which contain a corresponding amount of NbCl5 as an impurity.
1) 6.7 g of TaBr5 are stirred in 400 ml of methylcyclohexane and heated to 801 while passing in nitrogen. By injecting 4 ml of isoprene with the aid of an injection needle, acetylene is immediately absorbed into the suspension when it is introduced. In this way, 120 liters (= 131 g) of acetylene were converted in 4 hours.
The reaction was terminated by adding acetone. Yield. = 115 g benzene.
m) 9.0 g of NbBr5 are slurried in 400 ml of m-xylene in a 1500 ml 4-necked flask and the suspension is heated to 80 'while passing in nitrogen, some of the NbBr5 dissolving . Acetylene is then introduced, which is absorbed at a rate of 400 ml / min. The reaction is interrupted after <B> 31/2 </B> hours.
Yield = 48 g benzene. <I> Example 4 </I> a) 8.5 g of the yellow double salt of NbCl5 with potassium fluoride are suspended in anhydrous m-xylene (400 ml) in a 1500 ml flask, and acetylene is introduced with the aid of <B > A vibratory mixer ensures a fine distribution of the mixture components, with the mixture gradually turning reddish brown. When a temperature of <B> 100 '</B> is reached, vigorous absorption of acetylene begins in the suspension, which is about 400 ml / min after 8 min and, by regulating the acetylene supply for <B> 90 </B> min is held at this value. This forms a black product which, in addition to Nb, K, Cl and F, also contains a high-polymer acetylene in low yield.
Benzene <B> (25 g) </B> is obtained as the main product. Analysis of the double salt used: Nb 28.4%, Cl 53.9%, K 11.4%, F 5.6%.
b) 7 g of the double salt of NbCl5 with KCl are suspended in 400 ml Shellsol T (brand name) in a 1500 ml flask.
At a temperature of <B> 1301C </B>, vigorous absorption of the acetylene begins with an <B> absorption </B> rate of about 250 ml / min. After 3 hours, the reaction is interrupted, a black residue is filtered off and 15 g of pure benzene are isolated from the filtrate.
c) In a 1500 ml flask, 10 g of NbOC13 are suspended in 500 ml of m-xylene and gradually heated while passing in acetylene. At 140 ', the absorption of acetylene begins at a rate of about 170 ml / min and continues over a period of 3 hours. After filtering off a residue, 14 g of benzene are obtained from the flask by distillation.
d) 7 g of the adduct of NbCl5 and POCl3 (yellow crystalline powder) are suspended in 200 ml of methylcyclohexane under nitrogen in a 1000 ml flask. At <B> 35 '</B>, the nitrogen is displaced by acetylene, with stormy absorption occurring immediately with a rise in temperature. The temperature is then kept at 501 ° C. and the absorption rate at 400 ml / min by cooling. The reaction is interrupted after 21/2 hours.
On the one hand, <B> 10 g </B> of a brown-black precipitate are obtained by filtration, on the other hand a clear filtrate is obtained, from which 50 g of benzene contaminated with a little cyclohexane are isolated by fractionation, corresponding to a yield of about <B> 77% of the theory. e) 5 g of the yellow addition product of NbCl5 and PCl5 are heated in a 1500 ml flask in 250 ml of anhydrous m-xylene while passing in acetylene. At 120 'a noticeable absorption begins, which increases rapidly to a speed of 400 ml / min and is kept constant at this value by regulating the acetylene supply. After 2 hours, the reaction is interrupted. The customary work-up isolates 10 g of a black residue.
20 g of benzene and 10 g of high-boiling, unidentified products can be separated from the solution in m-xylene.
f) <B> <I> 8 </I> g </B> Niobpen # tachlorid # etherate (produced by dissolving NbC15 in hot ether and then precipitating the product by cooling the solution) are in a <B > 1500 ml flask slurried in 400 ml m-xylene and heated in the presence of acetylene. At <B> 80 '</B> absorption begins which is kept constant at an absorption rate of 400 ml / min. The initially red-brown solution turns dark. The reaction is interrupted after 2 hours.
The usual work-up gives 14 g of a black precipitate and 36 g of pure benzene.
When using the addition product of NbCl5 to tert. Butylamine or an, di-n-octylmethylamine as a catalyst, a similar result was achieved.
<I>Example<B>5</B> </I> a) In a 1000 ml 4-neck flask equipped with a reflux condenser, a vibromixer with a stainless mixing plate and a thermometer, 5.95 g of NbCl5 Slurried in 500 ml of anhydrous methyl cyclohexane. Through an inlet nozzle, which is immersed in the slurry, methylacetylene, which is condensed in an upstream flask, is introduced with the aid of a weak stream of nitrogen at a temperature of 50 l. The nitrogen escapes through the cooler reflux. Within a short time the catalyst suspension turns violet-brown and finally black, while the temperature rises sharply.
The reaction temperature is kept at <B> 62 '</B> by regulating the supply of methyl acetylene and by cooling from the outside. On the whole, 62 g of methylacetylene are converted within 150 minutes. Here it is filtered off, 3.4 g of a gray catalyst residue being obtained. The yellow filtrate is extracted by shaking with NaOH and washed neutral with distilled water. Separation by distillation gives 31.5 g of a boiling fraction between 161 and 165 which was identified as a mixture of the isomers mesitylene and pseudocumene .

Using <B> each </B> a typical absorption band for mesitylene (12) and pseudocumene (12.45 u), the percentage composition was determined by comparing the intensity of these bands with the intensity of the two pure products for a known layer thickness will. It is 33% mesitylene and 67% pseudocumene.
<B><I>b)</I> </B> In the apparatus described under a), 9 g of NbCl5 are suspended in 400 ml of methylcyclohexane and 103 g of ethyl acetylene are then introduced within 90 minutes, which react immediately . The temperature is kept at 64-65 '. When the reaction mixture is separated as described under a) above, 8 g of a black catalyst residue and 72 g of a fraction boiling between 211 and 218 'are obtained.
This fraction consisted of a mixture of 1,2,4- and 1,3,5-triethyl benzene.

After the separation and purification of the reaction mixture, 8 g of hexamethylbenzene could be obtained from the methylcyclohexane solution by evaporation.
Twice recrystallization from methanol-acetone gave a product consisting of white flakes with a sharp melting point of 161.51 (theory 159-162 ').
<I>Example<B>6</B> </I> <I> a) </I> In the apparatus described in example <B> 5 </B> under a) 7.1 g of NbCl5 Slurried in 500 m.1 absolutely anhydrous methylcyclohexane and heated to <B> 65 '</B>. An acetylene stream of on average 500 to 550 ml / min is introduced into this suspension, 232 g of ethyl acetylene being added to this acetylene stream in the course of 220 min. After the gas mixture has entered the catalyst slurry, a vigorous reaction begins immediately; the temperature rises rapidly to about <B> 92 '</B> and is <B> maintained </B> at this value by cooling.
During the duration of the experiment, 118.5 liters of 130.9 g of acetylene are absorbed by the catalyst slurry. After the reaction had ended and the catalyst residue had been filtered off, the filtrate was separated into the following fractions by distillation: 1. to 1101, 2.110-220 ', which were analyzed by gas chromatography and had the following components in total:
