Process for the production of single crystals of refractory materials with a high melting point and installation for the implementation of this process The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of single crystals of refractory materials with a high melting point, according to which is carried out in the process. matter of which one wishes to obtain the crystals a body in which is made a cavity,
this body is introduced into a controlled environment and there an electric current is passed through this body until at least the wall of the cavity has been brought to the temperature of sublimation.
According to a known method, the body consists of a closed hollow cylinder in which graft crystals are arranged; this cylinder is only heated by an external current source and is surrounded by two metal cylinders in order to avoid external evaporation.
In accordance with the invention there is a tendency to carry out a process which differs from the known process in that graft crystals must not be used, which increases the field of application and the yield of the process. Likewise, the method according to the invention offers, over the known method, the advantage that the heat is obtained by the Joule effect in the material of the body from which the crystals are formed. This heating is much more rational and makes superfluous the application of metal cylinders surrounding the body in order to combat external evaporation.
However, it had already been proposed to cause heating by the Joule effect in a closed cylinder, but always in the presence of graft crystals and under additional heating of the closed ends of the cylinder.
According to the invention, said cavity is provided in the form of a channel, the electric current is passed through the body, using two electrodes which block the ends of the channel and the electrodes are cooled, at least to height of the plane of contact with the channel, down to a temperature below the equilibrium temperature of the gaseous material inside the channel.
Advantageously, the ends of the body are thermally insulated from the electrodes.
In an advantageous embodiment of the invention there is placed, against the end of at least one of the electrodes, directed towards the body, a plate of thermally insulating material and this layer is covered, on the side directed towards the body, with d 'an electrically conductive sheet which electrically connects the electrode in question to the body.
The invention also relates to an installation for implementing the method described above and more particularly to an installation comprising a vacuum chamber, two electrodes lying face to face and passing through a wall of the chamber and means allowing the supply of these electrodes. In this order of ideas, the invention aims above all to achieve an installation in which the electrodes conducting the electric current intended for heating a body arranged between the electrodes can be maintained at the exact temperature so that crystals can then be formed. on these electrodes.
For this purpose, the ends of the electrodes facing each other are covered with a thermal insulator which is itself covered with an electrically conductive layer connected to the electrode in question.
In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the aforementioned electrically conductive layer consists of a metal sheet which covers the thermal insulation, at least on the side opposite to the electrode and which is connected, at least in one place, to the electrode. Other details and peculiarities of embodiments of the invention will emerge from the description given below of a process for the production of single crystals of refractory materials with a high melting point according to the invention and of two installations. for the implementation of this method, also according to the invention.
The reference notations relate to the attached sins.
Fig. 1 is a vertical section of the installation according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section, on a larger scale, of the central part of the installation according to FIG. 1.
In both figures, the same reference notations refer to the same elements.
By compression and concretion, a cylinder 1 is formed from powdered uranium dioxide. A round channel 2 is drilled into the cylinder 1, the diameter of which increases towards the ends. In the example cited, the cylinder 1 may have a length of 40 mm, an outside diameter of 25 mm and a wall thickness of 5 to 8 mm. The cylinder 1 is arranged between two electrodes 3, each consisting of a copper tubing having a central cavity 4, in which is arranged a nozzle 5 for the supply of cooling water, discharged, in turn, via the space formed between the outer wall of the nozzle 5 and the inner wall of the cavity 4 in the electrode 3.
A washer 6, made of refractory material with a high melting point, for example zirconium oxide, is interposed between the end of each electrode 3 and the adjacent end of cylinder 1.
The washers 6 serve as thermal insulation. A thin sheet 7 of wolfram or tantalum, with a thickness of the order of 0.5 mm, is folded over each of the washers 6 and is connected to the corresponding electrode 3, using a screw 8 and a block 9. The sheets 7 shunt the washers 6. A metal sheet 10 with a high melting point, for example in wolfram, partially surrounds both the cylinder 1 and the washers 6 and is also connected to the electrodes 3.
The assembly described above is placed in an enclosed space 11, which consists of a quartz cylinder provided at its two ends with cheeks 12, cooled with water. The cheeks 12 are extended, so that their central part protrudes from the enclosed space in the form of guides 13 ending in collars 14, one of which is closed by a cover 15 and the other of which is fixed by a disc 16 which is integral with it, via a tombac jacket, with two integral covers 18 which, in turn, are attached to the corresponding electrode 3 and to a measuring installation 19,
intended to record the displacement of the electrode 3 during the sublimation process.
The method according to the invention takes place according to a preferred example of execution, as follows : when the assembly formed by the electrodes 3, the cylinder 1 and the auxiliary elements 6, 7 and 10, is placed in the enclosed space 11, a vacuum of about 10- mm Hg is created in the latter. The ends 20 of the electrodes 3 are then placed under voltage, after which the current is passed through the sheets 7 and the metal foil 10. The current and the voltage are slowly raised, from 0 to a value of 120 A and 10 V. After approximately 90 minutes, the cylinder 1 reaches a temperature of approximately 10001, C.
A current of 300 A is then passed for a short time, which melts the sheet 10 and then a current of 200 A at 10 V is passed through cylinder 1, which raises the temperature of the external wall. cylinder 1 at 1700 ° C. and the temperature of the internal wall thereof at 25001 ° C. At this temperature, the uranium dioxide sublimates and condenses, in the form of single crystals, on the walls closing off channel 2.
The insulating washers 6 can be omitted when the intensity of the current through the cylinder is much higher; in this case, much more intensive cooling is desired. The preheating of the cylinder 1 can also be obtained, for example, using an oven or by passing a high voltage through the electrodes. The process can also be carried out in another controlled medium, for example in an inert gas.
