<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Method for producing a printed circuit The invention relates to a method for producing a printed circuit with recessed circuit elements on a carrier made of insulating material.
It is known to produce printed circuits with non-recessed switching elements by applying a light-sensitive layer to a copper-clad plastic carrier plate and copying the image of the circuit onto it and developing and fixing it in the usual way, whereupon the copper foil or the unexposed areas The copper layer is etched away.
It is obvious that such a process does not have printed circuits with recessed switching elements, i.e. those in which these switching elements are sunk into the surface of the carrier and preferably form a flat surface with the unexposed, etched parts of the carrier plate, can deliver.
For the production of such printed circuits with countersunk circuit elements, a method has been proposed at. in which an embossing die is used, in whose embossing surface the relief of the printed circuit is transferred by copy milling.
With this stamp a copper foil is punched out in each case for the production of a printed circuit and the punched-out parts of this foil are pressed onto the carrier and pressed somewhat into its surface. In order to ensure that the pressed-in parts of the copper foil adhere firmly to the carrier, a carrier made of non-hardened plastic and / or a hardening adhesive is used, the carrier material and / or the adhesive having to harden in each case.
It is the aim of the invention to produce sunk printed circuits in the most efficient and time-saving manner possible. By using the method according to the invention, it is possible to generate such circuits with a minimum of working time and largely eliminating the so-called downtimes. In the case of photographic processes, such downtimes result primarily from the treatment in the individual baths and the subsequent etching and removal of the etchant from the carrier or from the printed circuit elements.
In the already proposed method for producing sunk printed circuits by embossing, a relatively long service life is due to the necessary hardening of the plastic of the carrier plate or the hardenable adhesive after the circuit has been printed.
According to the invention, the stated aim is achieved by using an embossing plate on which the relief of the circuit is produced with the aid of a photographic process and by etching away the unexposed areas, that the circuit using this embossing plate in the with conductive Material coated carrier is embossed, and that after embossing .the conductive material is removed from the non-embossed areas of the carrier.
With this method, the usual downtimes result only in the manufacture of the embossing plate, but this is practically negligible; In addition, the production of the embossing plate is still considerably cheaper compared to the proposed method mentioned, in which the relief of the embossing tool is produced by copy milling.
For the embossing process only very short working times, which can be less than a minute per piece, are required; In this case, downtimes are completely eliminated, since the carrier material and hardening
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
or or an adhesive in the usual sense, as in the proposed method mentioned, is not required.
The plates produced according to the new process can also be characterized by being completely free of chemical substances such as acids and other corrosive substances which could damage the printed circuit elements over time; Furthermore, according to tests, they show only extremely low leakage currents and a high level of flashover safety due to the recessed arrangement of the switching elements.
According to a preferred embodiment of the method, a carrier with a hard or largely hardened surface can be used, the method being carried out in such a way that the parts of the surface to be embossed temporarily assume such a plasticity during the embossing that the switching elements be pressed into the surface of the carrier.
A plate made of a material that can be softened on the surface by heat and / or pressure can be used as the carrier, e.g. B. made of largely hardened phenolic resin, urea resin, melamine resin, polyester resin or epoxy resin. The resin can be used in pure form or in a mixture with other components and additives.
A foil made of metal, such as copper or silver, or a sprayed-on coating that contains such a conductive metal in fine distribution can be used as the conductive material.
After the embossing, the conductive material can be applied to the non-embossed areas in a simple manner by mechanical processing, e.g. B. by grinding, can be removed, a completely smooth surface of the printed circuit can be achieved.
With the present method, it is also possible to manufacture printed circuits in a so-called multi-layer process. Various types of switching elements, eg. B. resistors, capacitor linings, insulating layers and conductive connections are imprinted with the help of various embossing plates.
The method according to the invention is explained below by means of an exemplary embodiment.
The embossing plate is made from a flat, rectangular plate with a thickness of about 5 mm and edge lengths of 5 and 6 cm. The plate can be made of stainless steel. After appropriate cleaning of the surface, the plate is coated on the side to be provided with the relief of the printed circuit with a light-sensitive layer which can be hardened at the exposed areas with the help of the chromate process. Then a positive of the circuit to be printed is copied onto the light-sensitive layer and this is hardened in the exposed areas, whereupon the unexposed, non-hardened areas of the layer are washed away.
After the plate has been etched off, the relief of the formwork remains in the exposed areas; After removing the hardened layer parts, the embossing plate is ready for use.
An approximately 2 mm thick, hardened plastic plate with edge lengths of 5 and 6 cm serves as the carrier for the printed circuit. The plate can for example consist of hardened phenolic resin of the type DCC 20 (Dow); however, other insulating thermosetting resins with electrical and mechanical properties corresponding to the present purpose can also be used. It must be ensured that the material of the carrier is not too brittle under the working conditions to be selected so that it does not crack during the embossing process.
A foil made of electrolytic copper, the thickness of which is approximately 0.04 mm, is used as the conductive material. Films of this type can be obtained commercially.
In the present case, a simple lever press was used for embossing, with which a force of around 1.5 t was generated.
In preparation for the embossing process, the embossing plate and the plastic carrier were preheated to a temperature of around 90 ° C. Preheating is not necessary in every case; however, this on the one hand reduces the risk of the carrier jumping and on the other hand makes it easier to press in the copper foil, since the surface of the carrier becomes plastic to a certain extent as a result of the heating; In any case, the heating allows the use of smaller embossing pressures, which reduces the effort involved in pressing and the embossing process can be shortened.
After placing it in the press, with the carrier, the copper foil and the embossing plate lying on top of one another in this order from bottom to top, pressure was applied for about one second; this was enough to press the copper foil at the points of the relief into the carrier so far that its free surface at the pressed points was roughly flush with the non-pressed points. After removal from the press and cooling to room temperature, the copper foil was sanded off at the unembossed areas and the printed circuit was thereby completed.
This method can easily be modified in such a way that either only the embossing plate or the press die or only the plastic carrier is preheated. In the manufacturing plant, the press ram will optionally be heated to the desired temperature. As mentioned, preheating may possibly be dispensed with at all, but then, in general, a higher pressing pressure and a longer pressing time will have to be used.
