Als Nitroverbindungen kommen in erster Linie Nitrobenzole in Frage, und zwar sowohl das uri substituierte Nitrobenzol als auch dessen Substitu- tionsprodukte, beispielsweise ;
und 7 V olumteile 30 % ige Natronlauge, c) 176 Volumteile Äthylenglykol, 18,8 Volum- teil-- 30,\#äige Natronlauge, d) völlig wasserfrei;
Man erhält ss-Chinacndon in 90 % iger Aus beute.
Process for the preparation of linear quinaeridones It is known that linear quinine acridones are obtained by oxidation of linear dihydroquinacridones with nitrobenzene sulfonates and an alkali hydroxide in aqueous alcohol or aqueous glycol. However, this process only gives incompletely oxidized and therefore weakly colored pigments which still contain considerable amounts of practically colorless dihydroquinacridones. Using common methods (e.g.
B. by dissolving in conc. Sulfuric acid, diluting with water to a lower acid concentration, filtering off and reacting with water) cannot be separated from their dihydro compounds without great losses, so that such incomplete oxidation by known processes becomes quite uneconomical.
It has now been found that linear quinacridones or their dibenzoderivatives with significantly stronger color are obtained if, according to the invention, a linear dihydroquinacridone or
a dibenzo derivative thereof with an aromatic nitro compound is heated in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide and a monohydric alcohol or a monoalkyl ether of a dihydric alcohol or a monoalkyl ether of a polymer of a dihydric alcohol as a solvent.
The dihydroquinacridones to be used as starting materials can be obtained by condensation of 1 mole of a succinylosuccinic acid ester with 2 moles of a corresponding arylamine in which at least one o-position to the amino group is unsubstituted, for example with aminonaphthalene, but especially aminobenzenes, such as z. B.
Aniline, p-toluidine, p-chloroaniline, p-methoxyaniline or 2,4-dichloroaniline to the 2,5-diarylamino-dyhydroterephthalic acid esters and ring closure of the latter by heating to 250 to 260 in a high-boiling solvent, for example in a Ge mixture of diphenyl and diphenyl oxide.
Nitrobenzenes are primarily suitable as nitro compounds, specifically both the uri-substituted nitrobenzene and its substitution products, for example;
those containing water-solubilizing groups, such as nytrobenzenesulfonic acids, in particular m-nitrobenzenesulfonic acid or nitrobenzene carboxylic acids. It is advantageous to use approximately 1 mole of the nitro compound per mole of the dihydroquinacridone.
For reasons of price, the alkali hydroxide is primarily sodium hydroxide. It is advisable to use at least 2 moles to 1 mole of the dihydroquinacridone. It proves to be advantageous to use a fairly large excess, for example 5 to 25 mol to 1 mol of the dihydroquinacridone, in order to achieve rapid dissolution. The alkali hydroxide is conveniently used in powdered form.
As monovalent; Alcohols are preferably used .solche containing 3 to 6 carbon atoms, e.g. B. isopropyl alcohol, n-butyl alcohol, amyl alcohol (mixture of isomers) and cyclohexanol. Particularly interesting are the monoalkyl ethers of glycols, for example the methyl or ethyl ethers of ethylene or propylene glycol,
of diglycol or polyethylene glycol. The amount of solvent is expediently chosen so that the reaction mixture can still be easily stirred. This is the case if at least 3 parts by volume of the solvent are used for 1 part by weight of the dihydroquinacridone.
The reaction temperature depends suitably on the boiling point of the solvent used and is generally between 80 and 150. It is expedient to work in the absence of substantial quantities; H. of more than 10% water, based on the amount of solvent.
Working up is expediently carried out by diluting the reaction mixture with water, in general with approximately the amount of water that equals the amount of solvent used. The quinacridone separates out completely and can easily be filtered off.
If the dihydroquinacridone used was not excessively contaminated, the chir_acridone can be conditioned by one of the customary methods without western purification and used for the customary nagment applications, otherwise it is advisable to reprecipitate the crude pigment from sulfuric acid.
In the following examples, the parts, unless otherwise stated, mean parts by weight, the percentages are percentages by weight, and the temperatures are given in degrees Celsius.
Example 1 1 / 5o mol = 6.84 parts of dimethyldihydroquineacridone, obtained by condensation of 2 mol of p-toluidine with 1 mol of succinylosuccinic acid ester and subsequent ring closure,
are heated together with 16 parts of powdered caustic soda in 150 parts by volume of ethylene glycol monoethyl ether with stirring to 120, whereby a clear bluish solution is formed. 13.5 parts of sodium nitrobenzenesulphonate are now added and the mixture is stirred for a further 2 to 3 hours.
After this time, the resulting blue-violet suspension is diluted with 150 parts by volume of warm water and the resulting red-violet suspension of the quinacridone is suction filtered. The filter residue is washed exhaustively with hot water and hot alcohol and then dried at 50 to 60 in vacuo.
With the same success, 3 parts of nitrobenzene can be used as an oxidation nut instead of 13.5 parts of sodium nitrobenzene-m-sulfonic acid.
If the starting material used was not sufficiently pure, it is advisable to recrystallize the raw pigment from sulfuric acid. The easiest way to do this is by solving in conc. Sulfuric acid, addition of water up to an acid concentration of about 80 to 85%, filtering off the crystallized product and reacting the latter with water.
The pure product is completely insoluble in common organic solvents. If it is converted into a fine distribution by known methods, a valuable pigment is obtained which, for. B. in polyvinyl chloride films or paints very pure, red-violet tones of excellent lightfastness and migration or varnish fastness.
A pigment of just as high color strength can be produced with comparable yields, if instead of the ethylene glycol monoäthyläthers used above z. B. the corresponding monomethyl ether is used, or with the same success z. B. amyl alcohol (mixture of isomers), n-butyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, cyclohexanol as well as other monoethers of glycols (ethylene, propylene glycol, diglycol, polyethylene glycols).
Example 2 1/100 mol = 3.83 parts of dichlorodihydroquinacridone (by condensation of 2 mol of p-chloroaniline with 1 mol of succinylosuccinic acid ester and subsequent ring closure in a mixture of 76.5 diphenyl and 23.573 diphenyloxide, known under the trade name Dowtherm A, available at 250 to 260)
are heated to 120 with 8 parts of powdered caustic soda in 150 parts by volume of ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, a clear and almost colorless solution. When 1.5 parts of nitrobenzene are added, an intensely blue solution is formed immediately, from which, after two hours of stirring at 130 by diluting with 500 parts by volume of water, the quinacridone which has already partially precipitated is completely precipitated.
After filtering off, washing with hot alcohol and hot water and conditioning by known methods, a strongly colored product results in a yield of 90 "or theory.
For comparison, 6.5 parts of dichlorodihydroquinacridone were stirred with 20 parts of 30% strength sodium hydroxide solution and 8.5 parts of sodium nitrobenzene-m-sulfonic acid in 155 parts of ethylene glycol for 5 hours at 120 by a known method. The bluish red suspension was then diluted with 60 parts by volume of cold water and filtered, and the residue was washed neutral with water.
After conditioning, a product is obtained which, when rolled into polyvinyl chloride, gives significantly weaker colorations than the pigment obtained in accordance with paragraph 1.
If this dehydration is carried out by another known method, that is, instead of in ethylene glycol and 30% alkali z. B. boiling for 4 hours in 127 parts by volume of alcohol and 10.5 parts of 30% sodium hydroxide solution results in a pigment that is even weaker in color.
Example 3 1 / 5o mol = 6.35 parts of dimethoxydihydroquinacridone (obtainable by condensation of 2 mol of p-an # isidine with 1 mol of succinylobuccinic acid ester and subsequent ring closure in a mixture of 76.5% diphenyl and 23.5 / 10 diphenyl oxide at, 250 to 260)
apply 8 parts of powdered caustic soda in 150 parts by volume of ethylene glycol monoethyl ether heated to 120. When 2.5 parts of nitrobenzene are added, the previously greenish solution immediately turns an intense blue and quickly separates a red-violet product. After stirring for two hours at 130, the mixture is diluted with 500 parts by volume of warm water and the precipitate is: filtered off and washed with hot alcohol and hot water.
A strongly colored pigment is obtained in a yield of over 97% of theory.
For comparison, 6.35 parts of dimethoxy-dihydroquinacridone were stirred with 20 parts of 30% sodium hydroxide solution and 8.5 parts of sodium nitrobenzene-m-sulfonic acid in 155 parts of ethylene glycol for 5 hours at 120 according to a known method. The pale red-violet suspension is then diluted with 60 parts by volume of cold water, filtered and the residue is washed neutral with water.
After conditioning, a product is obtained which, when rolled into polyvinyl chloride, gives significantly weaker colorations than the pigment obtained in accordance with paragraph 1.
An equally weak pigment is obtained by another known process, namely by refluxing 6.35 parts of dimethoxydihydroquinacridone for two hours in 127 parts by volume of alcohol, 15 parts of water, 5 parts by volume of 30% sodium hydroxide solution with 10 parts:
of the sodium salt of m-nitrobenzenesulfonic acid. Example 4 6.84 parts of the dimethyldihydroquinacridone used in Example 1 are dissolved in 150 parts by volume of ethylene glycol monoethyl ether and 8 parts of caustic soda by heating to about 100, while stirring.
2.5 parts of nitrobenzene are then added to the pale gray solution, a dark burgundy-colored suspension immediately forming. This is gently boiled for 1 to 2 hours, then diluted with 150 parts by volume of water and slipped off. The filter residue is washed with a little hot alcohol and then with hot water and dried at 50 to 60 in a vacuum. 6.16 parts of an intensely violet product or 90.7% of theory are obtained.
For comparison, this dehydrogenation was carried out by known methods as follows: 13.5 parts of the sodium salt of m-nitrobenzenesulfonic acid were used for 6.84 parts of dimethyldihydroquinacridone, and the reaction medium used was a) 50 parts by volume of ethylene glycol and 60 parts of water and 10 parts by volume of 30% sodium hydroxide solution, b) 140 parts by volume of alcohol, 22 parts of water,
and 7 parts by volume of 30% sodium hydroxide solution, c) 176 parts by volume of ethylene glycol, 18.8 parts by volume of 30% sodium hydroxide solution, d) completely anhydrous;
150 parts by volume of ethylene glycol and 8 parts by weight of powdered caustic soda. In all cases the reaction was allowed to react for 4 hours, under reflux in case b), otherwise at 120 to 125, and with constant stirring. In case b) it was then pushed directly, in a), c) and d) it was diluted with 75 parts of water each time before suction.
After washing the filter material with hot water and hot alcohol and drying it in vacuo, violet products were obtained in at least 97% yield, but in all cases of significantly lower color strength than the product obtainable according to paragraph 1. This is particularly clear when the crude pigments are used after identical fine grinding for coloring polyvinyl chloride.
Example S 6.84 parts of the dimethyl dihydroquinacridone used in Example 1 are heated to 110 parts by volume of ethylene glycol monoethyl ether and 16 parts of caustic soda with stirring. The resulting solution is then mixed with 12 parts of p-nitrophenol and heated to a gentle boil for a further 4 hours.
After dilution with 75 parts of 40 water, the filter is swept, the filter material is washed with hot water and a little hot alcohol and dried at 50 to 60 in a vacuum. A pigment of the same color strength as in Example 4, paragraph 1, and in a similar yield is obtained. With the same success, for example, 28 parts of powdered sodium ethylate can be used instead of 16 parts of caustic soda.
Example 6 6.84 parts of the dimethyldihydroquinacridone used in Example 1 are dissolved in 150 parts by volume of amyl alcohol (technical isomer mixture) and 16 parts of caustic soda by heating to about 110 with stirring.
14 parts of p-nitrobenzoic acid are then added and the resulting suspension is refluxed for a further 4 hours while stirring.
After the addition of 100 parts of water, it is washed with hot alcohol and hot water and dried under vacuum. An extremely strong product is obtained in very good yield. The dehydrogenation by p-nitrobenzoic acid is just as successful,
if the same volume of n-butyl alcohol or cyclohexanol or isopropyl alcohol or ethylene glycol monomethyl or monoethyl ether is used instead of amyl alcohol. The caustic soda can also by the equi valent amount of z. B. caustic potash can be replaced.
Example 7 6.28 Tested dihydroquinacridone are dissolved at 100 in 100 parts by volume of ethylene glycol monoethyl ether and 4 parts of powdered caustic soda with stirring. Then 2.5 parts of technical dinitronaphthalene (mixture of isomers) are added, whereupon a purple suspension is formed immediately.
This is stirred for a further 3 hours with low boiling, then diluted with 200 parts of water and the pigment which has precipitated is isolated by sliding off. The crude product is boiled with alcohol and water and then dried in vacuo. The yield of crude quinacridone is practically quantitative.
Example 8 6.28 parts of dihydroquinacridone are dissolved with stirring at 100 in 100 parts by volume of ethylene glycol monoethyl ether and 4 parts of caustic soda. Then 3.5 parts by volume of nitrobenzene are added and the resulting deep purple suspension is refluxed for a further 2 hours.
After thinning with 150 parts of water, the filter is filtered off with suction, washed with a little hot alcohol and then with hot water and dried in vacuo. Ss-quinacndone is obtained in 90% yield.
If, on the other hand, the dihydroquinacridone is dehydrated by a known process by boiling for 2 hours in 190 parts by volume of alcohol, 22.5 parts of water, 7.5 parts by volume of 30% strength sodium hydroxide solution with 13 parts of sodium m-nitrobenzenesulfonate, the result is γ-quinacridone with about 99% strength prey.
If, however, these two crude pigments are recrystallized from sulfuric acid under the same conditions (e.g. by dissolving 10 times the amount of concentrated sulfuric acid, diluting with water to an acid content of 80%, suction filtering, reacting with hot water), then in obtained in both cases a-quinacridone. However, the product resulting from the dehydration according to the method is, after identical fine grinding, significantly more strongly colored and more brilliant than the pigment obtainable from the product in paragraph 2.
Example 9 A mixture of 15.7 parts of dihydrochlorine acridone, 50 parts by volume of ethylene glycol monoethyl ether and 10 parts of coarsely pulverized caustic soda is stirred until the initial self-heating comes to a standstill. Then 5.2 parts by volume of nitrobenzene are added dropwise within half an hour at a temperature of 60, where a blue suspension arises from the initially light greenish suspension.
This is heated to a gentle boil under reflux for a further 3 1/2 hours while stirring well. It is then slowly diluted with 50 parts of water and the blue-tinged red suspension is suction filtered. After washing the filter material with a little hot alcohol and with hot water, it is dried at 90 to 100 in a vacuum.
14.2 parts or 91% of theory are obtained of quinacridone. After crystallization from sulfuric acid (cf. Example 8, paragraph 3), 12.4 parts of very strong and brilliant α-quinaeridone are obtained.
Example 10 4.14 parts of the dibenzo-dihydroquinacridone obtainable by ring closure of 2,5-di- (1'-naphthylamino) -idihydroterephthalic acid diethyl ester, with stirring and with heating to about 120 in 150 parts by volume Ethylene glycol monoethyl ether and 8 parts of caustic soda dissolved.
Then 2 parts by volume of nitrobenzene are added and the mixture is refluxed for 3 hours. After diluting with 200 parts of water, it is suction filtered, washed with hot alcohol and hot water and dried in vacuo. 3.6 parts of the corresponding dibenzoquinacridone are obtained, which, after fine grinding, dyes polyvinyl chloride films in strong orange tones.
This dehydration is just as successful if 7 parts of sodium m-nitrobenzenesulfonate are used instead of 2 parts by volume of nitrobenzene.
The analogous dehydrogenation of the isomeric dibenzo-dihydroquinacridone obtainable by ring closure of 2,5-di- (2'-naphthylamino) -dihydroterephthalic acid diethyl ester is just as easy and, after appropriate fine grinding, leads to a pigment, the polyvinyl chloride films in also very lightfast, orange Tones colors. Example1 1 3,
83 parts of the dichlorodihydroquinacridone obtainable by ring closure of 2,5-di- (o-chloroanilino) -dihydroterephthalic acid diethyl ester are heated to 120 in 150 parts by volume of ethylene glycol monoethyl ether with 8 parts of caustic soda with stirring. After adding 2 parts by volume of nitrobenzene, the mixture is refluxed for 21/2 hours and then diluted with 600 parts of water.
The precipitated pigment is filtered off with suction, washed with a little hot alcohol and with hot water, then dried in vacuo. The raw pigment obtained is concentrated in 50 parts by volume. Sulfuric acid is dissolved in the cold, the acid concentration is lowered to 80% by adding water dropwise, and the product which has crystallized out is suctioned off and reacted with hot water.
After isolation and drying, the result is: a bright orange pigment which, after conditioning, dyes polyvinyl chloride films in very strong and pure orange-red shades; the yield is 84% of theory.
