La fig. 1 est une vue en coupe du moule d'une telle machine;
la fig. 2 est un diagramme montrant l'échelonnement dans le temps des différentes opérations de la machine;
la fig. 4 montre le diagramme de fonctionnement;
Process of molding objects in foamed plastic
and machine for implementing the method
The present invention relates to a method of molding objects of expanded plastic material according to which plastic granules are fed into a mold which is heated and in which they are expanded under the action of a flow of steam for s 'agglomerate and take after expansion the shape of the mold, the finished object being removed by opening the mold, characterized in that as soon as it is opened for the extraction of the finished object, the mold is subjected to a preheating operation which continues during the closing of the mold and its new filling with plastic granules, so that the time required for preheating the mold is superimposed on the time required for its closing and its filling in order to form a new object.
The subject of the invention is also a machine for implementing the above method, comprising a mold formed from at least two shells, means making it possible to move said shells apart, respectively to bring them closer to one another. in order to open, respectively close the mold, heating means and cooling means making it possible to heat, respectively to cool the mold, a steam supply making it possible to cause the latter to act in the mold once filled with plastic granules for cause their expansion and shaping, characterized in that at least one of the shells is hollow, its internal recess being capable of being placed in communication with the steam supply to cause preheating of the mold, this shell having nozzles for supplying steam to the mold,
means making it possible to prevent any passage of steam through these nozzles during the preheating operation, so that the steam is not introduced into the shape determined by the mold until the latter has been filled with granules.
The appended drawing represents, schematically and by way of example, several embodiments of a machine for implementing the claimed method.
Fig. 1 is a sectional view of the mold of such a machine;
fig. 2 is a diagram showing the staggering over time of the various operations of the machine;
fig. 3 is a sectional view of the mold according to a second embodiment of this machine, of which
fig. 4 shows the operating diagram;
fig. 5 shows, in section, a third embodiment of the mold of this machine, of which
fig. 6 shows the operating diagram.
This method of molding objects in foamed plastic material, for example styrofoam, consists of bringing plastic granules into a mold which is heated and in which they are foamed under the action of a flow of steam to s' agglomerate and after expansion take the shape of the mold. The finished object is removed after opening the mold. In known molding processes of the type indicated above, each operation is well determined over time and is carried out successively with respect to one another.
Thus, the mold is only opened after cooling and is only reheated for the next cycle after having been closed again and having been filled with new granules intended for the formation of the next object. It results from this succession of operations that the complete operating cycle of the machine for shaping an object is relatively long. The object of the method of the invention is to reduce the time required for a complete cycle of operations. It is characterized by the fact that after having cooled the mold and having opened it to extract a finished object, as soon as the mold is opened, the latter is subjected to the preheating operations which continue during the closing of the mold and during its new. filling of plastic granules.
Thus, the time required for preheating the mold is superimposed on the time required for its closing and filling, which makes it possible to save a significant amount of time over a complete cycle.
Fig. 1 shows a mold generally indicated by the reference number 1. This mold consists of two parts, a fixed shell 2 and a movable shell 3 capable of being moved using jacks to open the mold, respectively to close it. The plastic part to be formed will therefore take the form of the space 4 between the shells 2 and 3 of this mold 1. As shown in FIG. 1, the shell 2 is hollow and its internal recess is separated into two compartments 5 and 6. A steam supply pipe 7 opens into the compartment 5. This pipe 7 is controlled by a valve 8. A second supply pipe steam 9 opens into compartment 6. It is controlled by a valve 10. A pipe 11 controlled by a valve 12 allows the compartment 5 to be evacuated.
Into this compartment 5, plunges a pipe 13 pierced with a series of holes 14 constituting a ramp. This tubing 13 is intended for supplying the cooling water which must be sprayed through the holes 14 against the internal wall of the shell 2. The water supply to this tubing 13 is controlled by a valve 15. Between the partition 16 for separating the two compartments 5 and 6 and the wall 17 of the shell 2, are arranged channels 18 opening into nozzles 19 located in this wall 17. These nozzles 19 are intended to allow the supply of steam into space 4 , once said space is completely filled with plastic material to cause expansion thereof. In this embodiment, the channels 18 are themselves formed by flexible plastic tubes.
The operation of this first embodiment of a machine for molding objects made of expanded plastic material is carried out according to the following operations, shown schematically in the diagram of FIG. 2. This fig. 2 is, in fact, the diagram of a complete cycle spanning about 50 seconds.
Line I, next to which is marked the indication mold, shows the time required for the opening of the two shells 2 and 3 of the mold to allow the extraction of a formed part, as well as the new closing of the mold by approximation of shells 2 and 3.
Line II of the diagram marked filling represents the time required for the space 4 to be filled with the granules. These granules are brought by a pipe 20 and this using compressed air. A valve 21 makes it possible to close the mouth of the pipe 20 in space 4.
Line III of the diagram indicated preheating shows that this operation, which consists of sending steam into compartment 5 by opening valve 8, begins as soon as mold 1 is opened and ends approximately halfway through the cycle. full.
Line IV of this diagram, marked evacua tion, indicates the time during which the valve 12 is open to allow the evacuation, either of the cooling water or of the condensed water, out of compartment 5.
Line V of the diagram, indicated heating, shows the time that valve 10 is open to allow steam to be sent into compartment 6, from it and through channels 18 and nozzles 19, into the chamber. space 4, to cause the expansion of the plastic granules.
Finally, line VI of the diagram, indicated water, shows the period of spraying of the interior of compartment 5 with cooling water, spraying caused by the opening of valve 15.
In short, as soon as the mold 1 is opened in order to extract the formed part therefrom, the water supply valve 15 is closed, as is the discharge valve 12, while the preheating steam supply valve 8 is closed. is open, which makes it possible to preheat the mold before and during its filling with the plastic granules. Approximately halfway through the preheating cycle, valve 10 is open to cause direct heating of the granules by the steam blown into space 4 through nozzles 19. Approximately halfway through the cycle time, valves 8 and 10 are closed, while the discharge valve 12 is open and the water supply valve 15 is also open to cool the mold and the part which has just been formed therein.
As soon as the mold is opened at the end of the cooling period, that is to say at the end of the cycle, the operations which have just been described begin again for a new cycle of forming a new part.
The second embodiment of the machine shown in FIG. 3 also comprises a mold 1 formed of two shells 2 and 3, a mold between the shells of which is delimited a space 4 for shaping the parts. In this embodiment, the shell 2 has a single internal recess 5 into which opens a single steam pipe 7 controlled by a valve 8. This embodiment also comprises the pipe 13 for supplying water controlled by the valve. valve 15. In the wall 17 of the shell 2 also open the nozzles 19 constituting the mouths of channels 18. However, instead of being formed by flexible plastic tubes are, in this case, formed by rigid tubes.
Their opening 22 must be able to be controlled to be open or closed, depending on whether or not it is desired to cause the injection of steam into the space 4. The control of all the openings 22 of the channels 18 is effected by a shutter member 23 in the form of a plate, capable of being covered with a seal, for example a rubber plate. This tray 23
is controlled by a rod 24 with axial movement,
controlled from any mechanism at
cylinders, pneumatic or others. The compartment 5 is also provided with the evacuation pipe 1 1 controlled by the valve 12.
The operation of this second form of execution is similar to that of the first, as
this emerges from the study of the diagram shown in fig. 4. Lines I, II and VI of this diagram, indicated mold, filling and water, that is to say cooling, are therefore identical to those in fig. 2. On the other hand, line III is indicated
steam to point out that a single valve 8 controls the supply of steam to the single compartment 5. It is therefore the same steam used both for preheating and for supplying nozzles 19 which is used from this single compartment 5.
As for the line V indicated shutter, it therefore shows the period of the cycle during which the shutter 23 opens the mouths 22 and allows the sending of steam into space 4.
The third embodiment shown in FIG. 5 shows a machine in which the mold 1 has the same main members already composing the machine shown in FIG. 1. The shell 2 of this mold therefore also comprises two compartments 5 and 6. However, the pipe 9 for supplying steam to the compartment 6 derives directly from the pipe 7 controlled by the valve 8 bringing the steam into the compartment 5. Line 9 is not controlled by a valve. However, controlling the delivery of steam through the nozzles
19 is made using a shutter member 23 of the same type as that shown in FIG. 3, member 23 controlled by a rod 24 and intended to close (see position indicated in dotted lines), respectively to discover the mouths 22 of the channels 18.
In this third embodiment shown in FIG. 5, the organs already indicated in fig. 1 and 3 are marked with the same reference numbers.
The operation of the latter embodiment is practically identical to that of the first shown in FIG. 1. Referring to the diagram of fig. 6, lines I, II, IV and VI are similar to those in FIG. 2 and represent the same operations. On the other hand, the line III indicated steam clearly shows that only one steam supply takes place in a controlled manner in the shell 2 by the valve 8. As for the line V indicated shutter, it shows the period of the cycle during which the shutter 23 is remote from the mouths 22 to allow the passage of steam in the direction of the nozzles 19. The general operation of this latter embodiment is therefore similar to that of the two previous embodiments described.
To prevent the embodiments according to FIGS. 1 and 5 the entire zone delimiting compartment 6 is subjected, like the zone of compartment 5, to large temperature variations due to the periods of preheating with steam and cooling with water, it is advisable to provide the partition 16, on the side of compartment 5, with a thermal insulation coating, so as to reduce the metal mass of the mold subjected to temperature variations.
Numerous variant embodiments could be produced of this machine for forming plastics. In particular, one could imagine other control devices for the supply channels 18 of the nozzles 19. Among others, in the embodiment according to FIG. 3, each nozzle 19 could be controlled by a single particular shutter member, for example a valve held in the closed position by a calibrated spring only allowing the valve to open when the pressure in the compartment 5 reaches a given value.
In this case, after the preheating with steam has been carried out, the discharge valve 12 would be closed to cause a rise in pressure in compartment 5, which rise in pressure causing the opening of the individual control valves of each nozzle. 19 and the entry of steam into form 4. As a further variant, there could be a shutter member subjected to the action of a bimetallic element with delayed effect, adjusted so that the nozzle 19 is closed by the shutter. while the mold 1 is cold and opens under the effect of the bimetallic element only after the preheating period.
