Description

  Seam for welding plastic sheets
The present invention relates to beads for welding plastic sheets and more particularly relatively thick sheets of the type used for the production of floor coverings and similar rugs.

It is known that the edges or edges of these coverings are generally bevelled so that once placed on the ground, the opposite edges of two adjacent sheets determine between them a free space with a trapezoidal section. isosceles open upwards. To fill this free space and simultaneously ensure the assembly of the two edges, a hot weld bead is applied made of a suitable plastic material; the cords used in practice are provided with a circular section, with a diameter slightly greater than the large open base of the trapezoidal profile of the space to be filled.

If the application of such a weld bead does not in itself raise any particular difficulty,
Experience shows, however, that said application determines a semi-cylindrical longitudinal projection and furthermore causes swelling, swelling and other deformation of the upper face of the edges of the two assembled sheets. It is therefore necessary to provide a leveling operation so that the two carpets or coverings and the intermediate bead are strictly in the same plane. This operation is in fact a long and particularly delicate job.

The invention relates to a weld bead established to a profile such that its hot application does not require any subsequent leveling or finishing operation.

The weld bead according to the invention is characterized in that it has in section a semicircular profile, the rectilinear upper face of which has two wedge-shaped lateral wings.

The appended drawing will make it possible to better understand the invention.

Fig. 1 is a vertical section showing the facing edges or selvages of two plastic sheets or mats.

Fig. 2 shows in cross section a weld bead of the usual type.

Fig. 3 is a section similar to that of FIG. 1, showing the assembly of the two edges using the bead of fig. 2.

Fig. 4 shows this assembly after leveling.

Fig. 5 is a cross section of one embodiment of the weld bead according to the present invention.

Fig. 6 shows in section the assembly produced using such a bead.

In fig. 1 shows at 1 and 2 the edges of two plastic mats intended to constitute floor coverings. In the known manner, the opposite edges of these two belts are bevelled, thus determining a space a having in section a substantially triangular profile (point facing downwards).

In current practice, to fill this space a and to assemble the two edges 1 and 2, a suitable plastic weld bead, of the type shown at 3 in FIG. 2. Such a bead has in section a circular profile of diameter slightly greater than the large base of said space a. As shown in fig. 3, the hot application of this bead 3 causes the deformation of the upper face of the edges 1 and 2, which face is thus blistered upwards. In addition, the material which constitutes this bead represents a volume greater than that of the space a, so that the surplus determines a projection or longitudinal relief on the assembly line of the two edges 1 and 2.

After cooling, it is therefore essential to provide a leveling operation using a slicer or similar tool, in order to substantially restore the flatness of the assembly, as shown in FIG. 4. It will be understood that such a leveling operation is particularly delicate since it concerns not only the material of the weld bead 3, but also that of the edges of the two belts.

With a view to remedying this drawback, the present invention relates to a specially profiled weld bead. One embodiment of this cord has been shown at 13 in FIG. 5; as shown, its sectional profile comprises a substantially semicircular lower part 13a, integral on its rectilinear upper face with two small side wings 13b in the form of a wedge.

It will be understood that this bead 13 can be very easily applied hot in the free space provided between the two edges, referenced 11 and 12 in FIG. 6. It does not cause any blistering of the opposite edges, the upper face of which tends on the contrary, under the action of heat and of the application pressure (which can be more easily exerted on a flat face than on a face. curve), to sag down; this sagging is to some extent compensated by the lateral wings 13b of the cord which thus re-establish the flat profile. It is also understood that by means of an exact calibration of the bead and a precise adjustment of the reciprocal spacing of the selvages of the two belts, there can be no surplus of material, so that the assembly ultimately does not require any finishing.
