L'austénite de l'alliage, très instable, se décom pose en phase a d'aspect martensitique au cours du refroidissement jusqu'à la température ambiante qui suit le traitement à haute température ;
Parmi les autres avantages ide d'alliage revendiqué, liés à l'absence de ferrite 8, on peut citer les suivants - la température d'hypertremp.e peut être relevée pour mettre en solution une plus forte teneur .en aluminium, sans risquer ide donner naissance à une forte proportion de ferrite 8 libre ;

Alloy based on iron, nickel, chromium, aluminum, and method of manufacturing this alloy The present invention relates to .an alloy based on iron, nickel, chromium, aluminum, rich in iron, and its method of manufacture.
The object of the invention is to produce: an alloy which can be cold or hot worked and which, after a final hardening treatment, exhibits constant physical characteristics from one casting to another, and especially: a limit elastic and .a particularly high breaking load.
In industrial practice, hardenings of different kinds are used. We know the hardening of steels rich in carbon, in this case, austenite decomposes during cooling to give rise to harder structures (martensite, bainite)
. The hardness of the decomposition products of austenite during cooling is greater the greater the carbon content. This type of hardening, which makes it possible to obtain high mechanical characteristics, however has a certain number of drawbacks,
such as deformation resulting from quenching from high temperature, irregularity in characteristics, relative brittleness of carbon-rich steels, or welding difficulties, for example.
The structural hardening of stable austenites is also known, the development of which results from research undertaken as early as 1928 in the factories of the Company which owns the present patent. This type of hardening has proved to be particularly flexible, it can be achieved by tempering from a relatively low temperature, which makes it possible to avoid strong deformations and the vagaries of hardening. However,
the level of hardness obtained by age hardening of stable austenites is significantly lower than that which can be obtained by quenching steels.
Some authors have studied the structural hardening of stable ferritic alloys, in this case also, the hardening is not very important and, moreover, these conditions are relatively fragile.
The structural hardening of stable austenites results from the variation in solubility of the hardening elements as a function of the temperature,
and the Applicant has found that a change in the crystallographic structure of the alloy allows to enhance the structural hardening in general and the structural hardening by aluminum in particular.
To clarify the nature of the alloy which is the subject of the patent, the applicant has shown schematically in da fig. 1 the variation in solubility of aluminum in a stable austenitic structure (curve E) as well as in an alloy exhibiting a gamma-alpha transformation on cooling (curve E D B <B> A) </B> at temperature T2.
If the stable austenitic alloy and the alloy exhibiting gamma-: alpha transformation on cooling are both quenched from:
temperature T ,, then aged at temperature T3, the hardening will be proportional to the length ClC3, in the case of austenite, and C, C'3 in the case of the alloy which exhibits a gamma-alpha transformation. Curves 1, 2, 3 and 4 (fig. 2)
represent the variations of Vickers H "hardnesses, determined under <I> 2.5 kg, </I> as a function of the tempering temperature for three hours for three stable austenitic cubits and for one cubit which exhibits a gamma-alpha transformation on cooling, the compositions of which are given in the table below

It is noted that the structural hardening of cast 4 by aging at 4500 C-500 C is particularly important. The alloy which is the subject of the patent is therefore such that it exhibits a gamma-alpha transformation on cooling, so that the hardening element is put into solution at high temperature in the gamma state,
then precipitates in alpha phase after gamina-alpha transformation.
The alloy according to the invention is characterized in that the contents by weight: of the alloy,: of nickel and of chromium correspond to the range delimited by the contour ABCDE shown in the appended diagram (FIG. 3), and in that the alloy is free from free ferrite S, in that it comprises a content by weight ranging from 1% to 6% of aluminum,
and a carbon content at most equal to 0.15%, the alloy exhibiting most of the austenite in a structure of martensitic appearance and, on the other hand, a compound rich in aluminum.
The heat treatment conditions leaving the aluminum supersaturated or, in general, leading to a softened state as opposed to a hardened state, will hereinafter be called hyperquenching.
The alloy, transformed by the hypertrem, eg, can then be hardened by: tempering to a sufficiently low temperature, causing neither oxidation nor deformation.
An essential characteristic of the alloy according to the invention is that it does not: contain free ferrite, and that, due to the content ratio between the alpha-genic and gammagenic elements, this ferrite does not risk occur during thermal treatments.
Under these conditions, the property of aluminum can be fully utilized to promote the transformation of austenite to ferrite having a martensitic appearance, and the property of aluminum of being poorly soluble in the a phase, whereas it is highly soluble in the gamma phase.
During high temperature heating, the alloy is austenitic, and it is therefore possible to pass a large proportion of aluminum into solid solution. As this austenite is not stable, it turns into α-ferrite. marten.sitic appearance during cooling.
The solution or softening treatment is carried out at a temperature ranging from 750o C to 1250o C. The holding time is variable depending on the temperature and the size of the parts to be treated. It: is a few minutes in the case of treatments at a temperature; 11501) C for example, and can reach twenty hours when the treatment is at a relatively low temperature.
This softening can be carried out in several stages; it may, for example, be useful to carry out a treatment, normalization at a high temperature, then a softening treatment at a lower temperature. Usually a 30 minute treatment at 800 () C is sufficient.
The cooling which follows the dissolution can take place depending on the case: in air, in oil, or in water. The hardening tempering can be carried out at a temperature ranging from 200 ° C. to 700 ° C. depending on the desired characteristics and depending on the treatment which the alloy has undergone before the tempering (hyperquenching, or tempering followed by hardening). The duration of the tempering can be between a few minutes and twenty-four hours.
The hardening can also be carried out by repeated aging treatments, each of these treatments being followed by cooling to room temperature or to a temperature below this.
During this tempering, the aluminum, initially supersaturated in the martensitic-looking ferrite formed during cooling, precipitates in the martensite as an aluminum-rich compound, producing significant structural hardening.
The hatched region delimited by the contour A B C D E (FIG. 3) determines the nickel and chromium contents that can be used according to the invention, the representative point of the alloy having to be inside this contour. The fia. 3 indicates, on the abscissa, the chromium contents, and on the ordinate the nickel contents.
The alloy according to the invention contains more than 1% to 6% aluminum which can be partially replaced by titanium and / or: mo; lybdenum, the aluminum content not becoming less than 0.5 0/0.
The addition of titanium and / or molybdenum may have the effect of modifying the composition, the crystal structure or the precipitation kinetics of the aluminum rich compound.
In addition, the alloy can contain up to 2% silicon and up to 4% manganese.
The carbon content should be limited to a maximum of 0.15%.
Taking into account the influence of the various elements of the alloy on the formation of ferrite 8, it is also necessary that the sum of the percentages by weight Cr -f- 1.5 Si + 2.5 Al -I- 2, 5 Ti -i- 0.8 Mo - Ni 12 C - 0; 2 Mn or at most equal to 10.
In addition, the alloy may contain various additions in small quantities, however, not modifying its nature both with regard to the balance of alphagenic and gammagenic elements, and with regard to the mechanism of hardening, structural tightening of the alloy by precipitation of a compound rich in aluminum and / or in titanium and / or in molybdenum during hard tempering.
The alloys according to the invention exhibit a higher hardening ability and an elastic limit, thanks to the precipitation in phase a of a constituent rich in aluminum and / or in titanium and / or in molybdenum,
than alloys free from these elements such as 18% chromium and 8% nickel alloys.
Some known alloys grading about 17% chromium and 7% nickel contain a relatively small proportion of aluminum. These alloys have free ferrite 8.
The alloys according to the invention, owing to the balance of the elements chromium and nickel specified by the hatched area ABCDE, do not contain ferrite 8. They therefore support a higher aluminum content which can be included. between 1% and 6% and:
is generally greater than 2.5% when the highest mechanical characteristics are to be obtained.
The absence of ferrite 8 is extremely beneficial in this type of alloy.
The austenite of the alloy, which is very unstable, decomposes in phase a with a martensitic appearance during cooling down to the ambient temperature following the high temperature treatment;
Residual stenitis, if any, can be transformed by refrigeration at a lower temperature or by strain hardening. The hardening of the alloy being linked to the variation in the solubility of the aluminum in phase y and a, and the composition of the alloy being such that the free ferrite 8 does not appear,
all the material can participate in the structural hardening due to the precipitation. of a compound rich in aluminum @en supersaturation in the ferrite a. The existence of a certain quantity of free ô ferrite therefore amounts, in certain known alloys, to reducing the possibilities of age hardening.
As .aluminum, in addition to its action on the ability to harden, promotes: the formation of ferrite, it is essential that the chromium and nickel contents are included in:
of the hatched domain ABCDE and that the sum of the percentages by weight Cr + 1.5 Si + 2.5 <B> AI </B> + 2.5 Ti + 0.8 Mo - Ni - 12C - 0.2 Mn is at most equal to 10 to avoid the risk of ferrite formation b. In the case of known alloys containing about 17% chromium,
7% nickel and 1.2% aluminum, small deviations in the composition of the castings can cause large variations in the content of free ferrite 8 and consequently a dispersion of the mechanical characteristics of a casting to another.
Among the other advantages of the claimed alloy, linked to the absence of ferrite 8, the following can be mentioned - the hypertremp.e temperature can be raised to dissolve a higher aluminum content, without risking ide give rise to a high proportion of free ferrite 8;
- the absence of risk of formation of ferrite 8 allows not having to set the over-hardening temperature with great precision. In alloys containing a certain proportion of rite iron, on the other hand, a variation in the softening temperature would cause a significant variation:
the free ferrite content and, consequently, variations in the mechanical properties of the alloy; - The absence of formation @de ferrite 5 in the alloy according to the invention makes it possible to reduce the disadvantages linked to @ dendritic segregation. In alloys containing ferrite 8, these drawbacks are particularly marked when the ingots are of large size,
.the core of the ingots then being very rich in ferrite; - The alloy having, at high temperatures, an austenitic structure free of ferrite 8, the hot transformations ide the alloy (forging and rolling) do not present any difficulty.
In summary, the absence of free ferrite S in the alloy according to the invention enables the structural hardening of the alloy to be enhanced, to obtain good reproducibility of the characteristics: s mechanical from one cubit to one other, to reduce the drawbacks associated with dendritic segregation and to facilitate the hot transformation of the alloy.
The alpha phase: Obtained after the hyperhardening is sufficiently plastic so that the alloy can be easily shaped, cold rolled, drawn or stamped, as shown by the results indicated in connection with the examples which follow.
The invention will now be described with reference to idifférentes ide compositions and to various treatment modalities. Preferably, the elbows are produced: under vacuum, but preparation in air is also possible.
On the occasion of the examples which will follow, indications will be given on the possibilities of replacing certain elements of the # alloy by equivalent elements. <I> Example 1 </I> A casting was carried out having the following composition in percentage by weight

It should be noted that after quenching at 800 Ce, it is possible to obtain a tempering of 3 hours at 550, an elongation of 9% and a striction of 40 0/0,

It can be seen that, at any temperature, the elastic limit and the breaking load of the grade according to the invention are markedly higher and that the elongations and strictures are equal to or greater than those of the reference alloy.
The creep tests confirm the: technical superiority of the alloy according to the invention. The creep tests were carried out at 400 ° C. using the same castings and the same heat treatments as those used for the rapid hot-extraction tests.

In this case, the .en: chromium content of the alloy could "be less than the content. Resulting from fi-. 3, but the sum of the elements chromium and aluminum must then be equal to the chromium content indicated in this figure. If the chromium is simultaneously replaced by molybdenum and aluminum, the abscissa of Fig. 3 corresponds to the sum Cr + Mo + Al.
In the same way, it is possible to replace a single part of the nickel by manganese and by: carbon at contents such as the sum Ni 0/0 + 30 C 0/0 + 0,
5 .Mn% is equal to the nickel content corresponding to the range delimited by the contour A B C D E in fig. 3.
However, the manganese content is 4,910, and the carbon content should not exceed 0.15%.
In the case of substitution of chromium by molybdenum and / or aluminum, and @ of nickel by carbon and / or manganese, it is necessary that the sum Cr -I- 1.5 Si + 2.5 Al -I - 2.5 Ti -i- 0.8 Mo - Ni - 12C - 0.2 Mn remains below 10.
The alloy according to the invention can be plastically cold-deformed without difficulty before the final hardening. This property can be used in particular to obtain strips and wire.
It is possible to obtain a relative reduction in thickness of more than 90% by cold rolling,
and more than 75% by drawing without any intermediate softening.
It is also possible to obtain deep stampings on hyperhardened metal.
For example, on a 0.24 mm thick blank, super-hardened at 1150 ° C and having the following composition

<U> C <SEP> Si <SEP> Mn <SEP> Ni <SEP> Cr <SEP> A1 <SEP> Fe </U>

It was also noted that if an intense work hardening is carried out after the hypertrem.pe, a tempering treatment carried out then at an average temperature which is often of the order of 400 to 500 C considerably exalts the: hardening @ of the alloy.
As an example, a work hardening of 87.5% by cold rolling, and a three hour tempering at 450 ° C. make it possible to obtain, on a 0.10 mm strip having the same composition as that of blank of 0,
24 mm which has just been indicated, an elastic limit of 0.2% of 240 kg / m @ m2 and a breaking load of 250 kg / mm2.
On a wire of the same casting, hardened by drawing 73 0/0, the characteristics obtained after aging for three hours at 450 ° C are 230 kg / mm - for the conventional elastic limit at 0,
2% and 238 kg / mm- 'for the breaking load.
The particularly high mechanical characteristics obtained after a hyperhardening and tempering, or after hyperquenching, hardening and tempering of an alloy according to the invention allow its use in the field of the manufacture of springs: as well as, of generally, in the field of aeronautics and ballistic devices. In this regard, it is interesting to note that the density of the alloy is relatively low, of the order of 7.5 and that the ratio
EMI0006.0133
is therefore particularly high.
The alloy according to the invention has, moreover, a good resistance to corrosion. Taking into account the nickel, chromium and aluminum contents, the alloy does not rust in water and is not attacked by immersion in a solution of sodium chloride at 3 0/0 or in solutions of acetic acid at varying concentrations.
Moreover, the alloys rich in chromium, corresponding to the range delimited by the contour A B C D E, resist well to nitric acid solutions.
Five consecutive tests of 48 hours each were carried out at room temperature on an alloy having the composition

Due to the high nickel, chromium and aluminum contents, the alloy according to the invention does not rust if it is exposed to the atmosphere.
A quality mainspring must also develop a high torque, which implies good mechanical characteristics. These high mechanical characteristics are obtained by intense hardening followed by tempering at a relatively low temperature, generally between 400o C and 550o C.
In view of the alloy hardening process, the manufacture of mainsprings for watchmaking is simpler than that of carbon steel springs. On the other hand, springs made from this alloy have certain advantages over springs made from carbon steel 1 - It is not necessary to take special precautions to avoid corrosion both for manufacture and for. storing or shipping the springs, the alloy being stainless.
2 - The manufacturing process only involves tempering: on a material that has been hardened beforehand, the treatment furnaces are simple and the characteristics obtained on springs can be: very regular. In the case of carbon steels, on the other hand, quenching installations are necessary and the efficiency of the quenching is never very regular.
3 - The strain-hardened alloy retaining good bad leeability, the shaping of the springs is easy and does not cause abnormal wear of the tools.
It is also not necessary to soften one of the ends of the Darne to form the retaining shell. After hardening treatment, this shell therefore remains rigid and does not deform in service in the watch.
4 - As the carbon content of the alloy remains low, the flange can be spot welded without difficulty.
5 - Springs made from the alloy further have the following advantages: a. They are unbreakable in the sense of watchmakers. b. They develop high .couples.
vs. They are stable. The torques of these springs do not decrease by fatigue, nor by prolonged holding at ambient temperature, contrary to what is observed: in the case of. Steel springs: with .carbon.
The strain hardening necessary to develop the hardening of the alloy can be achieved in different ways, depending on the transformation process used.
<I> A - The alloy is transformed into strips </I> <I> by hot rolling </I> Hot rolled strips are highly strain hardened by cold rolling; .Depending on the thickness of the starting hot-rolled strips, and the thickness of the final strips, one or more intermediate softenings may be necessary in order to achieve a determined rate of hardening which is most often greater than 80% .
<I> B - The alloy is hot rolled </I> <I> in wire rod state </I> After calibration of the wire rod by drawing, it is cold rolled to obtain strips whose width, which depends on the diameter of the starting wire rod, is most often greater than 10 mm.
One or more intermediate softenings may be necessary to comply with an adequate hardening rate which is most often greater than <B> 80 '</B> 0/0. In these two transformation processes, the laces necessary to make the springs are sheared in the band or the strip and the edges are mechanically polished.
<I> C - The alloy is rolled </I> <I> hot </I> <I> in the wire rod state </I> Instead of being limited to a wire sizing, it is it is possible to continue drawing until a wire is obtained whose diameter is such that by subsequent rolling the lace necessary for the con fection of the spring is obtained directly.
The wire having a small diameter and work hardening by rolling: then being insufficient, it is necessary, in order to obtain good characteristics on springs, to combine work hardening by wire drawing and work hardening by rolling.
Whatever the transformation technique used, the alloy according to the invention makes it possible to obtain good mainsprings and retains the properties listed above.
