Process for the production of valerolaetam The invention relates to the production of valerolactam, which is an important starting product for the production of polyamides.
It is known that caprolactam can be produced from cyclohexanecarboxylic acid or derivatives of this acid in the presence of sulfuric acid with the aid of a nitrous acid.
It has now been found that valerolactam can be obtained in a corresponding manner by reacting cyclopentanecarboxylic acid and derivatives thereof.
According to the invention, valerolactam is produced by allowing cyclopentanecarboxylic acid and / or a derivative of this acid to react with a nitrosating agent in the presence of sulfuric acid.
Derivatives of cyclopentanecarboxylic acid, which can be used as starting materials, are, for. B. Salts, esters and the anhydride of cyclopentanecarboxylic acid, while cyclopentanecarbohalide, cyclopentanecarbonamide and cyclopentanecarbonitrile can also be used.
Examples of nitrosating agents, which in the presence of sulfuric acid in; inventive method find application, are nitrosyl sulfate and nitrosyl halide, in particular nitrosyl chloride and nitrosyl bromide, and nitrous gases such as nitrogen monoxide,
Nitrogen sesquioxide and mixtures of these gases. Organic and inorganic nitrites such as nitrous acid can also be used. In general, any nitrosating agent can be used.
The reaction with the nitrosating agent takes place in the presence of sulfuric acid. In addition, sulfur dioxide, e.g. B. in the form of oleum are added. During the exothermic reaction taking place, the temperature can be reduced by cooling below room temperature, e.g. B. at 10, 0, -10 or -25 ° C. Usually higher Tem temperatures of z.
B. 50, 100 or 150 C is used. If a solvent is used, e.g. B. a saturated hydrocarbon such as cyclopentane or cyclohexane, the reaction can be carried out in a simple manner at the boiling point of the solvent.
It is not necessary to use a pressure other than atmospheric, as the reaction is little affected by the pressure used.
The amounts in which the reaction components are added can vary. Approximately equimolecular amounts are usually used.
An excess of cyclopentanecarboxylic acid not only means that this acid is not completely converted, but also that it is. a smaller number of by-products forms. Example In a flask with a volume of 250 cm, 22.8 g of cyclopentanecarboxylic acid are dissolved in 30 cm of cyclohexane.
The solution is kept at the boiling point under reflux while a mixture of 19 g of nitrosylsulphuric acid, 16 g of sulfuric acid (100%) and 21 g of oleum (sulfur trioxide content 20%)
is added. Then the whole thing is kept at boiling temperature for another hour.
The reaction mixture is then cooled directly with ice to 10-15 ° C. and extracted with ether.
9.9 g of unreacted cyclopentanecarboxylic acid are recovered from the ether solution. After extraction with ether, the aqueous liquid is neutralized with the aid of sodium hydroxide and then extracted with chloroform. From the chloroform solution falls 8,
2 g valerolactam, which, based on the converted carboxylic acid, corresponds to an efficiency of 73%.
