Description
Connection sleeve for welding plastic pipes The welding of interlocking plastic body made of thermoplastics, z. B. pipes and pipe connectors with heating of the engagement surfaces of the molded body to be connected by means of an interposed, electrically heated heating conductor is already known. It is well known to embed such heating conductors in a sleeve made of thermoplastic material.
Such sleeves are referred to as connecting sleeves, welding sleeves, welding sleeves or the like. The present invention now relates to such a connection sleeve for welding of thermoplastic plastic pipes, which consists of a thermoplastic material and contains a metallic, electrically heatable heating conductor. It is characterized in that the heating conductor is coated with an electrically insulating oxidation layer.
The accompanying drawings show an exemplary embodiment of the invention, namely FIG. 1 shows a partially sectioned side view of two pipes plugged together before welding and FIG. 2 shows the connection sleeve according to the invention in a perspective view.
The plastic pipe denoted by 1 has at its upper end a widened section la, into which a pipe 2 identical to pipe 1 can be inserted. The upper portion of the extension la has a recess 1b into which the connecting sleeve shown in perspective in FIG. 2 and designated as a whole as 3 is inserted. This connecting sleeve consists of a thermoplastic plastic and contains a metallic, electrically heatable heating conductor 4, which here has the shape of a bifilar-wound wire with two connection terminals 5.
This heating conductor is preferably, but not necessarily, arranged so that it is flush with at least one sleeve surface. It can be made of any of the metals known for heating conductors or one of the many alloys known for heating conductors, such as. B. a Cr-Ni-Fe alloy, which also includes additions of Mn, Mo, Al and. a. m. may contain. It is now important that it is coated with an electrically insulating oxidation layer that has been applied in some known manner.
Both when welding the two pipes 1 and 2 as well as during the manufacture of the sleeve 3, it can happen that the windings of the heating conductor 4 touch. If the heating conductor is not provided with an insulation layer, the effective length of the conductor is shortened and thus its resistance is reduced when individual turns be touched, so that when the electrical voltage is applied, too high a current flows, the one too fast and causes excessive heating of the sleeve material, so that it is not certain that a tight welded connection is obtained and, depending on which, the material is even destroyed.
Tests have shown that these disadvantages can also occur when the heating conductor is covered with an insulating layer made of paint or a plastic, since this changes at the temperatures to which the heating conductor is heated. The oxidation coating according to the invention, however, is not changed by the temperatures that occur, so that there is no risk of an incomplete permanent weld connection between the pipes to be welded when applying the correct electrical voltage.
