EMI0004.0044

Method for conditioning polychlorinated phthaloeyanine pigment The invention relates to a method for conditioning highly chlorinated copper phthalocyanine with 13 to 16 chlorine atoms per molecule to form a pigment product which is ideally suited for special applications.
Phthalocyanine green can be produced by various processes. These include chlorination of copper phthalocyanine in a liquid diluent under pressure or chlorination at atmospheric pressure in a solvent, e.g. B. a eutectic mixture of aluminum chloride and sodium chloride. The latter method is preferred because the starting material and the end product are somewhat soluble in the medium, which facilitates halogenation and enables the formation of pigments which approximate the theoretically possible chlorine content of 16 chlorine atoms per molecule.
When a liquid diluent is used for the chlorination, the product is usually isolated by steaming to remove the solvent, after which the aqueous slurry obtained is filtered and the pigment is dried. When using a eutectic mixture of aluminum chloride and sodium chloride, the isolation is done by diluting with water and then filtering and drying.
The pigments obtained in the manner described above have extremely poor color values. For example, if you place them in a Hoover-Müller or a three-roll paint mill with a suitable support, e.g. B. a printing ink varnish, ground, they are dull and show only 20-30 of the color value usually achieved. If the pigments are tested by introducing them into an oily carrier before drying, similarly unfavorable properties result.
For these reasons, phthalocyanine green is designated as a raw material in the initial processing stage described above, which must be further conditioned.
Various methods have been developed for conditioning phthalocyanine green base material so that it develops maximum brilliance and strength; most of them work with acid paste. In practice, these methods for acid pasting have been limited to two general methods so far. After the first, the pigment is dissolved in a mixture of sulfuric acid monohydrate and chlorosulfonic acid, whereupon the acidic solution is poured into water.
According to the other method, the pigment is mixed with a large volume of sulfuric acid of a concentration too low to cause any noticeable dissolution, whereupon it is dropped by pouring it into water. Both methods require careful monitoring of the processing conditions in order to achieve reproducible results.
These processes for acid pasting are expensive and time-consuming and have the disadvantage that they require large amounts of acids, which are generally extremely corrosive in nature. In addition to this economically unfavorable factor, the use of such acid volumes poses problems with regard to industrial hygiene and safety as well as the very serious and costly problem of disposal.
Purpose of the invention: is to provide a process for conditioning phthalocyanine green which does not have the disadvantages mentioned above. In particular, the need to use large amounts of acid should be avoided, and the phthalocyanine green obtained should have improved particle properties and be especially suitable for pigmenting plastics.
The purposes mentioned are achieved by the process according to the invention for conditioning polychlorinated copper phthalocyanine pigment with 13 to 16 chlorine atoms per molecule, which is characterized in that a crude chlorination mass, as obtained in the chlorination of copper phthalocyanine, in the presence of at least at least 5 / o, based on the weight of the pigment, of a water-immiscible, liquid, non-volatile, monomeric organic ester of a polybasic acid, which has a boiling point of at least 150 C under atmospheric pressure,
mixed with an aqueous medium and then separated from the organic ester coated pigment particles from the aqueous phase. It has been shown that when this method is used, not only does the need for conditioning by acidic pasting, with its many disadvantages, disappear, but also that a pigment mixture is produced which, when used for coloring non-aqueous plastic compositions, in particular of Floor tiles and linoleum, excellent color value and other favorable properties.
The pigment composition obtained consists of particles with optimal particle properties which are enveloped by the organic ester mentioned. Depending on the particular ester used, the pigment product can easily be used to pigment compatible plastic mixtures, including those based on synthetic organic polymer materials such as coumarone-indene resins, cellulose derivatives, e.g.
B. cellulose acetate, cellulose acetate butyrate, cellulose nitrate and ethyl cellulose, polymethyl methacrylate, polystyrene, vinyl resins, z. B. polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl butyrate, polyvinyl chloride and copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, alkyd resins and the like.
The monomeric organic esters used according to the invention should be liquid under the conditions prevailing during the mixing of the chlorination composition with the aqueous medium or during the subsequent removal of the water and should have a boiling point of at least 150 ° C. (under atmospheric pressure) so that they can with the removal of the water and / or a volatile organic liquid diluent present in the mixture by heating or steam or vacuum distillation,
or even during drying or similar operations, are not expelled. In general, the esters useful will have a molecular weight of about 175-450. Apart from being liquid and non-volatile, such esters have to be immiscible with water so that they form a hydrophobic film on the pigment particles in the presence of the aqueous medium. The polybasic acid from which the esters are formed can be an inorganic (such as phosphoric acid) or an organic, aliphatic or aromatic acid.
Examples of aliphatic, polybasic acids are adipic acid, azelaic acid, citric acid, sebacic acid, succinic acid and tartaric acid, and phthalic acids as aromatic polybasic acids. The alcoholic component of the ester can be an alkyl radical with 1-12 or more carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl radical, an aralkyl radical such as benzyl, a heterocyclic radical, an aryl radical,
such as phenyl, cresyl, xenyl and the like, or a mixture of such radicals. These radicals can contain inert substituents. B. lower alkyl groups such as methyl, ethyl and the like, lower alkoxy groups, eg. Methoxy, ethoxy and the like, chlorine atoms, lower acyl groups such as acetyl and the like.
Examples of monomeric organic esters that can be used are: dibutyl adipate, didecyl adipate, di- (methylcyclohexyl) adipate, dibutoxyethyl adipate, dibenzyl adipate, di-tetrahydrofurfuryl adipate, diisooctyl azelate, 2-phenyl-hexylphosphate, tripyl-hexylphosphate, tri-hexylphosphate, tri-hexylphosphate, tri-hexylphosphate, tri-hexylphosphate, trihexylphosphate, di- (methylcyclohexyl) adipate, di- (methylcyclohexyl) phosphate, tri-hexylphosphate, trihexylphosphate, tri-hexyl phosphate , Tridimethylpenyl phosphate, tricresyl phosphate,
Cresyldiphenyl phosphate, diphenynono-o-xenyl phosphate, dibutyl butyl phosphonate, 0,0,0-tributyl phosphorothioate, tris (2-chloroethyl) phosphite, dimethyl sebacate, dioctyl sebacate, dibutoxyethyl sebacate, dibutoxyethyl sebacate, dibutoxyethyl sebacate, dibutoxyethyl sebacate, dibutoxyethyl sebacate, dibutoxyethyl sebacyl, dibutoxyethyl sebacate, dibutoxyethyl sebacyl, dibutoxyethyl sebacyl, dibutoxyethyl sebacyl, dibutoxyethyl sebacyl, dibutoxyethyl sebacyl, dibutoxyethyl sebacate, dibutoxyethyl sebacyl, dibutoxyethyl sebacate, and the like, dibutoxyethyl sebacate,
As organic esters, however, phthalates are preferred, which give optimum results in terms of maximum color value, compatibility with plastics, properties of the coated pigment composition obtained and the like.
Examples of such preferred esters are: dimethyl phthalate, diisooctyl phthalate, diisodecyl phthalate, butyl isodecyl phthalate, dicapryl phthalate, di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, di (2-ethylhexyl) hexahydrophthalate, butylcyclohexyl phthalate (methyleatyclophthalate), butylcyclohexyl phthalate (methyleyclophthalate). phthalate, diphenyl phthalate, dibutoxyethyl phthalate, butyl benzyl phthalate and the like, as well as mixtures thereof.
Of these phthalates, butylbenzyl phthalate is particularly preferred because it has optimum properties in terms of stability, boiling point, compatibility with plastics and the like.
The organic esters should be used in amounts of at least 5%, based on the weight of the polychlorinated copper phthalocyanine pigment, the proportion depending on the type of product mixed in each individual case. If a paste is desired, about 5-60% organic esters should be used; Larger amounts of up to 200% of the pigment weight are to be used if a liquid product is required. If a dry powder is desired, small amounts within the stated range are usually used.
It is also possible to convert a paste prepared according to the fiction, according to the method into a powder by adding a finely divided inert solid with high oil absorbency, eg. B. calcium silicate, magnesium silicate or finely divided lime. The proportion of inert solid used depends in the individual case on the amount of excess organic ester which is contained in the paste being treated, about 1 to 4 parts of inert solid being used per part of organic ester in general.
Pastes and liquid slurries produced in the manner mentioned can. placed on the market in this form or continued to be processed on the roller mill or otherwise in order to improve the division according to the intended use.
The chlorination of copper phthalocyanine in a volatile organic liquid diluent to form a product with 13-16 chlorine atoms in the molecule is known per se. In general, trichlorobenzene, nitrobenzene, o-di nitrobenzene, o-chlorobenzene, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, acetonitrile, propionitrile and the like or mixtures thereof are used as the inert liquid diluent.
The polychlorinated copper phthalocyanine pigment obtained is insoluble in the chlorination mass and can be obtained by driving off the volatile, liquid diluent by steam distillation. According to the invention, the organic ester can be added to the chlorination mass before the steam distillation so that it is present during the formation of the aqueous slurry formed. The obtained organic ester coated pigment particles are then e.g.
B. separated from the water by decanting and / or filtering, which is then dried if desired. Instead of using the condensation water from the steam distillation in order to have the aqueous medium required in the process according to the invention available, water can also be added to the chlorination mass before the steam distillation.
In this case, the organic ester can be added to the chlorination composition before or after the addition of water with thorough stirring, or it can be mixed intimately with the dilution water and / or emulsified therein and this mixture can then be added. If desired, the chlorination mass can be filtered to remove most of the volatile liquid diluent before it is mixed with the aqueous medium in the presence of the organic ester in accordance with the method according to the invention.
The process for polychlorination of copper phthalocyanine in a melt of aluminum chloride and sodium chloride is also known per se and is described in detail in US Pat. Nos. 2,276,860 and 2,247,752.
In this melt, the ratio of sodium chloride to aluminum chloride should preferably be about 1: 4, that is to say the eutectic ratio of the two components which gives the lowest melting point.
In current practice, this ratio is changed within wide limits; sometimes even sodium chloride is not used at all, or a part of the sodium chloride is replaced with potassium chloride, magnesium chloride, antimony chloride and the like. All of these modifications are described in U.S. Patent No.
2,247,752, and it is understood that these modifications are to be regarded as equivalent to the eutectic melt of aluminum chloride and sodium chloride, to which reference is made here for the sake of simplicity. In this process, the polychlorinated copper phthalocyanine product with 13-16 chlorine atoms / molecule is soluble in the melt and it is obtained by pouring the chlorination mass into water, which is preferably acidified, e.g. B.
by adding 2-5% HCl to a pH of about 1. According to the invention, the organic ester can be added to the chlorination mass before pouring into water, but it is preferably added to the water before the chlorination mass is poured in. The organic ester is expediently emulsified in this water,
if necessary with the aid of an emulsifying agent (which should be acid-resistant with regard to the acidification of the water), since larger quantities are usually required to achieve satisfactory results when the organic ester is used in the water in non-emulsified form.
The coated pigment particles present in the aqueous slurry obtained can then be separated off by filtration, acid-free washing and drying, or by washing by repeated decanting and separating the organic layer.
The process described above can be applied to other chlorination compositions in which the polychlorinated copper phthalocyanine is soluble, albeit with less favorable results. The chlorination mass can, for.
B. by chlorinating the. Phthalocyanine pigment in chlorine sulfonic acid, p-toluenesulfonic acid, sulfuryl chloride or sulfur monochloride in an autoclave. In these cases the water into which the mixture is poured is preferably made alkaline, using an alkali-resistant emulsifier,
to emulsify the organic ester therein. The emulsifier used in the process according to the invention should be able to form oil-in-water emulsions.
Although anionic and cationic substances can also be used, it is preferred to use the known nonionic surface-active substances with a polyoxyalkylene chain, preferably a polyoxyethylene chain, as obtained, for example, by reacting a water-insoluble organic compound with at least 6 carbon atoms which contains at least one reactive hydrogen atom,
with a polyalkylene glycol or several moles of alkylene glycol, halohydrin or alkylene oxide, preferably ethylene oxide. Examples of reactive hydrogen-containing compounds are: carboxylic acids and sulfonic acids and amides, alcohols, thiols, phenols, amines and the like, e.g.
B. stearic acid, castor oil, abietic acid, the corresponding amides, lauryl alcohol, tridecyl alcohol (prepared by means of the oxo process), dodecyl mercaptan, nonylphenol, octadecylamine, rosin amine and the like.
The manufacture of these and similar substances is described in US Patents Nm. 1970578, 2205021, 2085706, 2002613, 2266141, 2 677 700, 2 2 1 3 477 and 2 593 112. They can be represented by the formula
EMI0004.0044
where R is the residue of an organic compound with at least 6 carbon atoms and a reactive hydrogen atom, A is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl and n has a value of about 2-100.
As mentioned above, an inert, finely divided, solid diluent can be added to the non-aqueous paste or liquid just prior to drying to form a free flowing powder. A further advantage of the process according to the invention is that the products can be dried at elevated temperatures of 130-150 ° C. without agglomeration or lump formation, whereas drying temperatures of about 60 to 70 ° C. were required in the known processes.
In the following examples, parts are parts by weight unless otherwise specified. Example 1 A mixture of 450 parts of anhydrous aluminum chloride, 110 parts of sodium chloride, 20 parts of cupric chloride and 60 parts of copper phthalocyanine (ground to the fineness of sieve no. 60) is on a Heated oil bath to 200 C.
Dry chlorine gas is passed into the melt for 1 hour and 20 minutes at high speed, a phthalocyanine green base material containing 15-16 chlorine atoms / molecule. The chlorination mass is then slowly poured into 2000 parts of vigorously stirred water which contains 25 parts of butyl benzyl phthalate. The aqueous paste obtained is filtered off, the filter cake is washed acid-free and dried at about 140-150 ° C.
When tested in asphalt and vinyl floor tiles, the pigment powder obtained in this way proves to be stronger, yellower and lighter than the commercially available phthalocyanine green pasted with acid. The product is also 2½ times as strong and significantly more yellow and lighter than a product obtained by the same process but without butyl benzyl phthalate.
Example 2 The procedure is the same as in Example 1, but instead of 25 parts of butylbenzyl phthalate, 15 parts, which are mixed with 0.5 parts of an emulsifier (reaction product of castor oil and 40 mol of ethylene oxide) in the Emulsified water into which the chlorination mass is then poured. Results similar to those in Example 1 are obtained. The same is the case if dibutyl phthalate or dicapryl phthalate is used instead of butyl benzyl phthalate.
Example 3 The procedure is the same as in Example 1, but instead of 25 parts of butyl benzyl phthalate, 30 parts of dimethyl phthalate are used. During the drying process, 50 parts of finely divided calcium carbonate are intimately mixed with the coated pigment.
A product is obtained which, after it has been ground to a fine powder, can be incorporated into a plastic based on cellulose acetate, with better results being achieved than with the commercially available, acid-pasted phthalocyanine green.
Example 4 The procedure is the same as in Example 1, but instead of 25 parts of butylbenzyl phthalate, 85 parts of dioctyl phthalate are used. The resulting aqueous slurry is washed with water by repeated decanting, and the organic layer is placed in a Werner-Pfleiderer batter mixer. Mechanical work, heat and vacuum are used to dry the product and improve dispersion. When incorporated into various plastics, the pigment product obtained in this way shows excellent strength and brilliance.
Example 5 An autoclave is charged with 2 parts of copper phthalocyanine, 0.1 part of antimony trisulfide and 6 parts of carbon tetrachloride. The temperature is increased to 130.degree. C., whereupon chlorine is introduced through a sprinkler. The temperature is allowed to rise to 170-180 ° C.
When the chlorine consumption ceases and examination of a sample of the chlorination batch shows that the product contains 13 'to 16 chlorine atoms / phthalocyanine molecule, the batch is poured into 50 parts of water at 80 C, which contains 0.5 part of dicapryl phthalate,
which is emulsified in it with the aid of the reaction product of 1 mole of nonylphenol and 9 moles of ethylene oxide. After complete removal of the carbon tetrachloride by distillation, the aqueous paste is filtered off and the cake is washed with hot water. The pigment cake is dried and ground to give a product that can easily be incorporated into asphalt and vinyl linoleum base materials.
