In guter NÏherung ist f1(v,nG,nF)= nF-1ò V. nc ;

Für a = 0 geht f2 (v, a, Kp, nF) in fi (v, Mg, nr) über.

Method for compensating the error-causing influence of the temperature dependence of the refractive index of the liquid of liquid wedges when used in optical beam paths
There are known optical arrangements in the telescope or in the circular reading beam path of theodolites, levels and other optical measuring instruments in which liquid wedges are used as refractive and / or reflective members, the property of such liquid wedges that their liquid surface is always automatically in the horizon is used is to make the function of such instruments to determine directions with respect to the horizon, independent of the leveling of the instrument.
When changing the leveling of the instrument or when there is a greater or lesser deviation from the precisely leveled position of the instrument, the wedge angle of the liquid wedge and thus its optical effect changes and this fact is used to control the beam path in the required sense .
However, since the refractive index of liquids is relatively strongly dependent on the temperature, the operation of such an arrangement or such a liquid wedge is temperature-dependent. This serious disadvantage can be remedied by the invention.
The invention relates to a method for compensating for the error-causing influence of the temperature dependency of the refractive index of the liquid of liquid wedges when used in optical beam paths, according to which the beam to be controlled is allowed to enter the liquid of the liquid wedge at an angle of incidence different from zero and by changing the Angle of incidence compensates for the influence of the temperature dependence of the refractive index of the liquid causing the error.
The invention also relates to a compensation device for carrying out this method with at least one liquid wedge, which is characterized in that the entrance surface of the beam into the liquid wedge is preceded by an adjustable optical element which deflects the beam and by means of which the angle of incidence of the beam into the liquid of the liquid wedge is controlled according to the prevailing temperature.
The adjustment of the optical element upstream of the entrance surface, which can be refractive or reflective, can be done manually by the user of the instrument, or an automatic device that responds to temperature changes can be provided for this purpose.
In Fig. 1a and Fig. Lb of the drawing, a liquid wedge of known type is shown schematically with vertically incident beam and in Fig. 2a and Fig. 2b with obliquely incident beam, each with exactly leveled and incorrectly leveled position of the instrument, and on the basis of this Figures, the considerations on which the invention is based are set out.
In FIG. 3, an exemplary embodiment of the compensation device according to the invention for carrying out the method according to the invention is then shown schematically.
The liquid wedge F shown in Figs. 1 and 2, arranged in the telescope or in the circular reading beam path of an optical measuring instrument (not shown), for example a theodolite or a level, is located between a lower glass plate Gr and an upper glass plate G2, with between the surface of the liquid F and the upper glass plate G2 is filled with an air-steam mixture L space. The refractive index of the glass of the glass plates G1 and G2 is ncT, and the refractive index of the liquid of the liquid wedge F is nF.
The refractive index difference between the air-vapor mixture L and air is very small and negligible.
In FIG. 1 a it is assumed that the measuring instrument is in a precisely leveled position in which the wedge angle of the liquid wedge F is equal to zero. In this position, the surface of the liquid wedge F is parallel to the surfaces of the glass plates G1 and G2. If a bundle of rays 1, which can be parallel, convergent or divergent, hits the glass plate G1 perpendicularly, then it merges uninterrupted into the bundle of rays 1 '.
If, however, according to FIG. 1b, the instrument is tilted by the angle v to the horizon, the wedge angle of the liquid wedge is no longer zero, but rather equal to v, and the beam 1 is therefore refracted; it no longer passes into the beam 1 ', but into the beam 2. Corresponding rays of the two bundles of rays 1 ′ and 2 enclose an angle 3. This angle 3 is a function f1 (v, nG, nF), that is to say the tilt v and the refractive indices nc and nF.
To a good approximation, f1 (v, nG, nF) = nF-1ò V. nc;
In FIG. 2a it is assumed that with the same liquid wedge and with the instrument in an exactly leveled position, a beam 4, which can also be parallel, convergent or divergent, impinges on the lower glass plate Gl at an angle of incidence α. This beam 4 is offset in parallel and merges into the beam 4 '.
If, however, according to FIG. 2b, the instrument is tilted by the angle v, the beam 4 is not only offset in parallel, but also deflected; it merges into the beam 5. Corresponding rays of the ray bundles 4 ′ and 5 enclose an angle 6. This angle 6 is a function f0 (v, a, nG, nl.), I.e. the tilt or the wedge angle v of the liquid wedge, the angle of incidence a and the refractive indices n, and Kp. In good approximation
EMI2.1
For a = 0, f2 (v, a, Kp, nF) changes to fi (v, Mg, nr).
In f (v, a, nG, nF) nF is subject to the influence of temperature. The mode of operation of the arrangement is therefore temperature-dependent. The temperature influence on n ,, is two powers of ten smaller and can be neglected. The influence of the temperature dependence of the refractive index nF, which causes errors, can be compensated for by changing the angle of incidence a accordingly. For this purpose, the angle of incidence a must be controlled as a function of temperature in such a way that fz (vs a, nG, nr) becomes temperature-dependent.
This control of the angle of incidence α can be brought about by an automatically acting or manually operated adjusting device.
From the equation: df2 (v, a, nG, nF)? F2. da +? f2. dnF = 0 dT?? dT? nF dT results as a compensation condition for:
EMI2.2
It is necessary that nG and nI are of different sizes.
In the embodiment of the device according to the invention for carrying out the method according to the invention shown in FIG. 3, the liquid wedge F is located in a housing which is closed at the bottom by a prism P1 and at the top by a second, opposite prism Pg.
The space containing the air-vapor mixture above the surface of the liquid forming the liquid wedge F is denoted by L. The incidence surface through which a bundle of rays, which in turn can be parallel, convergent or divergent, enters the prism P, and the exit surface through which the bundle of rays emerges from the glass prism P2 after passing through the liquid wedge F, are parallel and for example inclined at 45 to the horizon.
The entry surface into the prism Pi is preceded by a rotating wedge 8 made of glass, through which the angle of incidence α of the beam into the prism? i is controlled according to the above-mentioned compensation condition. The setting of this rotary wedge 8 is done either by hand by the user of the instrument or automatically by a setting device known per se, responsive to temperature changes, e.g. B. one that works according to the bimetal principle ar.
The beam 7 impinging on the rotating wedge 8 is refracted by this rotating wedge 8 and merges into the beam 7 ', which is directed by the adjustment of the rotating wedge 8 so that it falls under the required angle of incidence corresponding to the refractive index nF at the prevailing temperature a enters the liquid wedge F and is deflected by this according to the inclination v of the instrument according to the function f2 ("G'r) and merges into the beam 7".
The angle of incidence a can always be controlled so that the influence of the respective prevailing temperature on the refractive index nF of the liquid of the liquid wedge F is compensated by appropriate setting, be it automatically by the setting device responding to temperature changes or be it by hand.
In the embodiment of FIG. 3, the exit surface of the prism P2 is followed by a further rotating wedge 9 made of glass. This second rotary wedge 9 no longer has any influence on the function f2, (v, a, n;, nF), and it is also not absolutely necessary; it is only used for adjustment in that it makes it possible to set the values for a given starting position, e.g. B. at v = 0, with a rotation of the rotating wedge 8 for the purpose of temperature compensation, the same mutual position of the radiation beam 7 and the radiation beam 7 ″ 'emerging from it to be restored.
This second rotary wedge 9 is operated in the same way as the rotary wedge 8, either by hand by the user of the instrument or by an automatic setting device which responds to changes in temperature.
As optical means, instead of the rotary wedges 8 and 9 shown in FIG. 3, other optical means, e.g. B. tiltable mirrors or prisms can be used.
With an appropriate design and arrangement, a liquid wedge can also be used in which the beam is reflected on the liquid surface lying in the horizon. If necessary, the compensation device for carrying out the method according to the invention can also have two or more liquid wedges.
PATENT CLAIM I. Method for compensating for the error-causing influence of the temperature dependence of the refractive index of the liquid on liquid wedges when used in optical beam paths, characterized in that the beam to be controlled is allowed to enter the liquid of the liquid wedge at an angle of incidence different from zero and by changing the angle of incidence compensates for the error-causing influence of the temperature dependence of the refractive index of the liquid.
