AlCl3, SbCl5, SnCl4, ZnCl2, BF3 und deren Komplexe mit organischen Verbindungen, Me tallfluorborate, Phosphorsäure. Bevorzugt verwendet man als Härter mehrbasische Carbonsäuren und ihre Anhydride, z. B. Phthalsäureanhydrid, Methy- lendomethylentretrahydrophthalsäureanhydrid, Dode- cenylbernsteinsäureanhydrid, Hexahydrophthalsäure- anhydrid, Hexachlorendomethylentetrahydrophthal- säureanhydrid oder Endomethylentetrahydrophthal- säurenanhydrid oder deren Gemische ;

Process for the production of new acetals containing epoxy groups The subject of the present patent is a process for the production of acetals of the formula containing at least two epoxy groups
EMI0001.0000
wherein R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, R7, R8 and R9 represent hydrogen atoms or monovalent substituents such as halogen atoms, alkoxy groups or aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon radicals, where R1 and R5 together also represent an alkylene radical such as a methylene group, Z is a trivalent aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or araliphatic hydrocarbon radical with at least 3 carbon atoms, the free valences of which originate from three different carbon atoms,

Suitable radicals Y 'are a 3-methyl-glycerol-α-monochlorohydrin radical or a glycerol-α-monochlorohydrin radical. It is known that such a halohydrin group can be converted into a 1,2-epoxy group by treatment with dehydrohalogenating agents.
The starting materials of the formula (II) can be obtained, for example, by adding an aldehyde of the formula in a first stage
EMI0002.0000
with a polyalcohol of the formula
EMI0002.0001
acetalized. The third functional group G 'in the polyalcohol (IV) is preferably also a hydroxyl group, but it can also represent a halogen atom, such as chlorine or bromine, or a group
EMI0002.0002
stand, where A1 stands for a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl radical.
The aldehydes of the formula (III) are derivatives of tetrahydrobenzene. The following may be mentioned: A3-tetrahydrobenzaldehyde, 6-methyl-Q3-tetrahydrobenzaldehyde and 2,5-endomethylene-Q3-tetrahydrobenzaldehyde. Possible polyalcohols of the formula (IV) are: triols such as glycerol, trimethylolethane, trmethylolpropane, butanetriol- (1,2,4), 1,2,6-hexanetriol, 2,4-dioxy-3-oxymethylpentane; Halohydrins such as glycerin-α-monochlorohydrin, glycerin-ss-chlorohydrin, glycerin-α -bronihydrin, glyceric acid.
The acetalization can be carried out by methods known per se, such as. B. by heating the aldehydes of formula (III) together with the di- or polyalcohol (IV) in the presence of an acidic catalyst, such as. B. hydrochloric acid or p-toluenesulfonic acid.
You can also use 1 mole of an aldehyde of the formula (III) to 1 mole of an epoxide of the formula
EMI0002.0012
attach. In both cases one arrives at acetates of the formula
EMI0002.0013
The conversion of the compound (VI) into the unsaturated acetals of the formula (II) depends on the type of functional group G '. There is the condensation, such as etherification, esterification or transesterification with reactive compounds, which z. B. contain one or more mobile halogen atoms or groups containing active hydrogen atoms, furthermore the addition of α, 3-unsaturated compounds with one or more C = C double bonds.
The addition of epihalohydrins, such as epichlorohydrin, and dihalohydrins, such as glycerol dichlorohydrins, is particularly suitable.
The inventive conversion of the C = C double bonds into epoxy groups can be carried out by customary methods, preferably with the aid of organic peracids such as peracetic acid, perbenzoic acid, peradipic acid, monoperphthalic acid, etc. You can also use hypochlorous acid, with HOCl in a first stage is attached to the double bond and in a second stage under the action of HCl-releasing agents such. B. strong alkalis, the epoxy group is formed.
The dehydrohalogenation of the halohydrin groups present in the acetals II, the z. B. the glycerol monochlorohydrin group, with the formation of the corresponding 1,2-epoxy groups or a glycidyl group can be carried out by the action of agents that split off hydrogen halide, such as potassium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide.
Since the acetals of the formula (II) contain halohydrin groups in addition to epoxidizable C =C double bonds, the epoxy formation takes place in two stages.
During the formation of epoxides, in addition to the di- or polyepoxides, as a result of side reactions, completely or only partially hydrolysed epoxides can also arise at the same time; H. Compounds in which the epoxy group of the polyepoxide of the formula (I) has been wholly or partially saponified to give hydroxyl groups.
It was found that the presence of such by-products generally have a favorable effect on the technical properties of the cured polyepoxides. It is therefore generally advisable not to isolate the pure polyepoxides from the reaction mixture.
The epoxidized acetates obtained according to the invention react with the usual hardeners for epoxy compounds. By adding such hardeners, they can therefore be crosslinked or cured in the same way as other polyfunctional epoxy compounds or epoxy resins. Basic or, in particular, acidic compounds are suitable as such hardeners.
The following have proven to be suitable: amines or amides, such as aliphatic and aromatic primary, secondary and tertiary amines, e.g. B. mono-, di- and tributylamines, p-phenylenediamine, bis- (p-aminophenyl) methane, ethylenediamine, N, N-diethylethylenediamine, diethylenetriamine, tetra- (oxyethyl) -diethylenetriamine, triethylenetetramine, Tetraethylene pentamine, N, N-dimethylpropylenediamine, trimethylamine, diethylamine, triethanolamine, Mannich bases, piperidine,
Piperazine, guanidine and guanidine derivatives, such as phenyldiguanidine, diphenylguanidine, dicyandiamide, aniline-formaldehyde resins, urea-formaldehyde resins, melamine-formaldehyde resins, polymers of amino styrenes, polyamides; z. B. those made from aliphatic polyamines and dimerized or trimerized, unsaturated fatty acids, isocyanates; Isothiocyanates; polyhydric phenols, e.g. B. resorcinol, hydroquinone, bis (4-oxyphenyl) dimethyl methane, quinone, phenol aldehyde resins, oil-modified phenol aldehyde resins, reaction products of aluminum alcoholates or aluminum phenolates with tautomeric compounds of the acetoacetic ester type, Friedel-Crafts catalysts , e.g. B.
AlCl3, SbCl5, SnCl4, ZnCl2, BF3 and their complexes with organic compounds, metal fluoroborates, phosphoric acid. Preference is given to using polybasic carboxylic acids and their anhydrides as hardeners, e.g. B. phthalic anhydride, methylendomethylene tetrahydrophthalic anhydride, dodecenylsuccinic anhydride, hexahydrophthalic anhydride, hexachloroendomethylene tetrahydrophthalic anhydride or endomethylene tetrahydrophthalic anhydride or mixtures thereof;
Maleic or succinic anhydride; you can optionally accelerators such as tertiary amines or strong Lewis bases, for. B. Alkali alcoholates, also advantageously polyhydroxyl compounds such as hexanetriol, glycerol, with use.
It has been found that when the epoxy resins obtained according to the invention are cured with carboxylic acid anhydrides, only about 0.3 to 0.9 gram equivalent anhydride groups are advantageously used to 1 gram equivalent of epoxy groups. When using basic accelerators, such as alkali alcoholates or alkali salts of carboxylic acids, up to 1.0 gram equivalent of anhydride groups can be used.
The term hardening as it is used here means the conversion of the above epoxy compounds into insoluble and urine-meltable resins.
The curable mixtures also advantageously contain a proportion of the otherwise corresponding acetals, the epoxy groups of which, however, have been wholly or partly saponified to hydroxyl groups, and / or other crosslinking polyhydroxyl compounds such as hexanetriol. Of course, other epoxides can also be added to the curable epoxy compounds, such as. B.
Mono- or polyglycidyl ethers of mono- or polyalcohols, such as butyl alcohol, 1,4-butanediol or glycerol, or of mono- or polyphenols, such as resorcinol, bis- (4-oxyphenyl) -dimethylmethane or condensation products of aldehydes with phenols (novolaks), furthermore polyglycidyl esters of polycarboxylic acids, such as phthalic acid, and also aminopolyepoxides, such as those found, for. B. obtained by dehydrohalogenation of reaction products of epihalohydrins and primary or secondary amines, such as n-butylamine, aniline or 4,4'-di- (monomethylamino) -diphenyl methane.
The curable epoxy compounds or their mixtures with hardeners can also be mixed with fillers, plasticizers, coloring substances, etc. in any phase prior to hardening. As an extender and filler, asphalt, bitumen, glass fibers, mica, quartz powder, cellulose, kaolin, finely divided silica (AEROSIL) or metal powder can be used.
The mixtures of the epoxy compounds obtained according to the invention and hardeners can be used in the unfilled or filled state, optionally in the form of solutions or emulsions, as textile auxiliaries, laminate resins, paints, varnishes, dipping resins, casting resins, coating, filling and leveling compounds, adhesives, molding compounds and serve the same as well as for the production of such agents. The new resins are particularly valuable as insulation compounds for the electrical industry.
In the following, parts are parts by weight and percentages are percentages by weight; the ratio of parts by weight to parts by volume is the same as that of the kilogram to the liter; the temperatures are given in degrees Celsius.
Precursors of starting materials can be obtained as follows A3-Tetrahydrobenzal-glycerin 184 parts of glycerin, 220 parts of A3-tetrahydrobenzaldehyde and 4 parts of p-toluenesulfonic acid are dissolved in 500 parts by volume of benzene and the mixture in a circulation distillation (description of the apparatus in Macromolecular Chemistry 7, 1951, 82, article by H. Batzer and co-workers) so long (about 20 hours) heated until 25 parts by volume of water are separated; the rest of the reaction water is absorbed in the desiccant.
The cooled solution is shaken first with 100 parts by volume of water, then with 50 parts by volume of soda solution, dried with Na2So4 and the benzene evaporated. The residue is fractionally distilled. A yield of 290 parts of main fraction (corresponding to 750 / o of theory) with a boiling point of 98-100 at 0.4 mm Hg is obtained.
This product is catalytically hydrogenated for characterization and the hydroxyl number is determined OH number = 263, double bonds = 5.7 equivalents (theory for the connection of the gross formula CioH1oO3: OH number = 308, double bonds = 5.5).
Exactly as described above, the following aldehydes and triols can be condensed to cyclic acetals using equivalent amounts: 6-methyl-03-tetrahydrobenzal-glycerol

EXAMPLE 1 462 parts of epichlorohydrin are added dropwise to a mixture, heated to 550, of 921 parts of A3-tetrahydrobenzal glycerol and 5 parts by volume of 48% boron trifluoride in ether.
The temperature is kept at 550 by external cooling. The mixture is then allowed to cool to room temperature and neutralized with 1.8 parts of powdered sodium hydroxide solution (the same reaction product is obtained if 1 mol of epichlorohydrin is first condensed with 1 mol of glycerol, and the glycerin monochlorohydrin ether obtained is then mixed with / \ 3- tetrahydrobenzaldehyde acetalized).
The entire reaction product is dissolved in 2500 parts of ethyl acetate, and 1100 parts of peracetic acid are slowly added. After 6 hours at 300 the theoretical amount of peracetic acid has been consumed. The solution is diluted with 2000 parts by volume of ethylbenzene, washed with 1500 parts of water and evaporated in a water jet vacuum with the addition of 3000 parts by volume of ethylbenzene. A product with 2.64 epoxy equivalents / kg is obtained.
1200 parts of the above monoepoxide are mixed with 2000 parts by volume of dry benzene and mixed with 165 parts of finely powdered sodium hydroxide while cooling at 20-250. After 1 hour, the sodium chloride formed is filtered off. The filtrate is washed with 250 parts by volume of 1 m mono sodium phosphate solution, dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and evaporated. A liquid diepoxide with 5.56 epoxide equivalents / kg is obtained.
Example 2 The mixture of 297 parts of 6-methyl-A3-tetrahydrobenzal-glycerin, 500 parts by volume of dry benzene and 1.5 parts by volume of 48% boron trifluoride in ether is heated to 7511. 139 parts of epichlorohydrin are added dropwise with stirring. Weak cooling will not cause the temperature to rise above 810. After the addition of the epichlorohydrin is complete, the mixture is allowed to cool to room temperature and 60 parts of powdered caustic soda are introduced over a period of 1/4 hour while stirring. The temperature is kept at 250 by cooling. After a further 23 minutes the mixture is filtered.
The filtrate is evaporated, 0.2 parts by volume of glacial acetic acid are added and the mixture is quickly distilled (bp 117-1420 / approx. 0.3 mmHg). Fractional distillation in a Vigreux column yields the glycidyl ether with a bp 131-137 / 0.4 mmHg. The product contains 3.90 epoxy equivalents / kg (99'0 / o of theory).

With cooling, 145 parts of 44.6% peracetic acid are added in portions at about 300 in 1/2 hour. It is left to react for a further 1 hour and 50 minutes at about 300 and then cooled. The benzene solution of the epoxide is washed 3 times with 200 parts by volume of ice water, 200 parts by volume of 2N soda solution and 150 parts by volume of monosodium phosphate solution. The aqueous parts are extracted with 400 parts by volume of benzene. The combined benzene extracts are dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered and evaporated. 157 parts of thin-bodied di-epoxy with 6.5 epoxy equivalents / kg (88% of theory) are obtained.
Example 3 99 parts of the dioxolane obtainable from 1,2,4-butanetriol and 03-tetrahydrobenzaldehyde are heated to approx. 0.3 parts by volume of about 48-0% boron trifluoride in ether and 46.3 parts of epichlorohydrin are added dropwise. The temperature is allowed to rise to 830. 15 minutes after adding the epichlorohydrin, 2 parts of anhydrous sodium acetate are added, the mixture is diluted with 250 parts of ethyl acetate and 111 parts of peracetic acid are added in portions.
After the mixture has reacted for 6 hours at 400, it is diluted with 200 parts by volume of ethylbenzene, washed with 2 times 50 parts of water and, after the addition of 750 parts by volume of ethylbenzene, evaporated in a water jet vacuum. The monoepoxide obtained is dissolved in 250 parts by volume of benzene and mixed with 20 parts of finely powdered sodium hydroxide. React at 21-260 for 2 hours. Example 5 113 parts of the dioxolane obtainable from 1,2,6-hexanetriol and Q3-tetrahydrobenzaldehyde are mixed with 46.3 parts of epichlorohydrin in the presence of 0.3 parts by volume of 48% boron trifluoride in ether implemented at 700.
After cooling, the product is mixed with 2 parts of anhydrous sodium acetate and diluted with 300 parts of ethyl acetate. 110 parts of peracetic acid are then added in portions. The mixture is allowed to react at 400 for 3 hours. It is diluted with 1000 parts by volume of ethylbenzene and washed with 2 times 150 parts of water and, after another 500 parts by volume of ethylbenzene, is evaporated in vacuo. The product is taken up in 500 parts by volume of benzene and dehydrohalogenated with 20 parts of finely powdered sodium hydroxide at 250. The mixture is filtered. The filtrate is washed with 50 parts by volume of 1M monosodium phosphate solution, dried and evaporated. 115 parts of liquid diepoxide with 5.51 epoxide equivalents / kg are obtained.
