Packing machine
The present invention relates to a machine for wrapping a roll in wrapping material, comprising a folding device operating after the wrapping material has been wound up in the form of a tube tightly surrounding the roll and protruding beyond. beyond the ends thereof, this folding device comprising several folding plates spaced apart angularly; t around a main axis coaxial with the roller.
Known machines of this type have not proved to be very satisfactory, in particular because they produce irregular folds or cause stresses in the packaging material such that when it is thin it can easily be torn or when is strong can cause the end of the folding device to jam.
The machine according to the invention is characterized by means for moving the folding plates so simultaneously t inwardly towards the main axis each in a direction extending in a plane passing through this axis so that their surfaces plates press the protruding end parts of the tube of packing material against the end of the roll leaving between these parts narrow upwardly directed folds, and means for rotating the assembly of the folding plates at an angle around away from the main axle, flattening the folds of the packing material against the end of the roll.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the machine forming the subject of the present invention as well as variants. Folding devices will be described with reference to their use in a machine for wrapping in paper or other wrapping material a roll of a certain diameter within a specified range (for example 10 to 30 cm) and of a certain length within a specified range (eg up to 76 cm or more). These dimensions are given as an example only of a machine operating with relatively large rollers and it is clear that a machine of similar construction could be used with a corresponding range of rollers of smaller diameter and length or, if one so desire, with an even greater range of diameter and length.
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a support frame for two end folding devices operating at both ends of the roll respectively.

Fig. 9 is a section taken along line 9-9 of FIG. 8.
Figs. 10 and 11 are views in elevation and respectively at the end of a variant of the pleating device.
Fig. 12 is an elevational view of another variant.
In the following description of the end folding device, it is assumed. that an individual roll has already been wrapped (e.g. by hand or by parts of the machine not relevant to the present invention) with wrapping material around its surface so that the roll as presented to the device end folding material is tightly surrounded by the packaging material in the form of a tube which protrudes beyond the ends of the roll, the longitudinal edges of this material being suitably secured, for example by adhesive tape to keep this tube tight around the roller.
The pleating device is intended for use at one end of the roll in conjunction with another similar pleating device at the other end of the roll, the two devices being actuated simultaneously to effect the simultaneous pleating and folding of the two protruding ends of the tube. packaging material.
Each of the two devices is carried by a frame member and to accommodate different roll lengths, the two frame members are mounted adjustably relative to each other by a suitable mechanism in the direction of the roll length. In some cases, adjustment may only be provided for two or more standard lengths of rollers (for example for two lengths of 61 to 76 cm respectively) with the frame members bolted exactly in their adjustment positions while in other cases the adjustment may be continuous to accommodate any length of roll within a predetermined range.
Fig. 1 shows an arrangement in which the frame members for supporting the two devices are only adjustable for a few roll standards. Each A-frame member consists of U-bars welded together to have a general T-shape seen in plan with two other U-bars At, A2 rising from the junctions between the T-rod and the two halves of the transverse bar of the T, the devices themselves being supported mainly between the upper ends of the bars At and A2 or on consoles or blocks fixed to the main bars of the T depending on the particular construction of the device.
The main bars of the elements A rest on three parallel U-shaped bars B, B1, B2 extending in a direction parallel to the length of the roll to be wrapped and constituting parts. of the fixed base of the packing machine, each of the bars B, B1, B2 being drilled with spaced holes B3 to receive bolts A8 in order to fix the frame members A in one of the adjustment positions suitable for the standard lengths chosen from the roller.
Fig. 2 shows a variant of the arrangement of FIG. 1 in which is provided a continuous adjustment of the frame elements, A, Al, Ae along the base fixed bars B, Bt, B2. In this Variant, the base central bar B has a guide rib B4 along its entire length along the sides of which bolts -A6 carried by the frame members, A, At, A2 can slide, and the bolt holes B3 drilled in the three base bars are replaced by longitudinal slots B6 along which the fixing nuts A3 can slide when loosened, two slots B6 being made in the central bar B, one on each side of the rib B4 .
The two frame elements A, A1, A2 when the bolts A3 have been loosened can be moved along the base bars B, B1, B2 by means of the threaded shafts A4 driven in rotation by cranks A5, the bolts A3 being of tightened again after adjustment to the desired positions.
The two folding devices carried by their frame elements A, A1, A2 are similar to each other and FIGS. 3-6 show a suitable construction for one of these devices. In this construction, each pleating device comprises a main shaft C mounted on the frame element t
A, A1, A2 and is prevented from rotating. While the shaft can be attached to the frame member, it is usually preferable (especially in a machine accommodating standard roll lengths) for its mounting that the shaft can be axially adjusted for a short measured distance. exactly in relation to the frame element.
With such an arrangement, when the frame member has been adjusted to the position suitable for the length of the roller, the subsequent fine adjustment of the shaft relative to the frame member which can be, for example, carried out under the control micrometer, allows the end pleating device to be set to slightly different spaces from the end of the roll to accommodate different thicknesses and types of packaging material, such as for applying not only to thin packaging material but also to packaging material such as polyethylene or other impervious inner layer applied as an outer protective layer or colored waxed paper or other inner layer of light protection on a surface. outer protective layer.
In the construction shown, a sleeve D1 sliding on a shaft end C1 engages with a threaded hole formed in a fixed member D in two parts carried by the frame member and is actuated by a gripping ring D2. A retaining nut C2 on the threaded end of the end C1 engages with the member D and forces a shoulder C3 on the shaft against the front end of the sleeve D1. A locking nut D3 engaging the front part of the member D is provided on the sleeve D1 to hold it in a fixed position.
When it is necessary to have a fine adjustment the nuts C1 and C3 are loosened and the ring D2 is actuated to re-screw the sleeve Dl forward or backward over a distance accurately measured in the member D, the Lock nut D3 is then tightened to hold the sleeve in its adjustment position and finally the retaining nut C2 is tightened to pull the shoulder C3 of the shaft in close contact against the sleeve D1.
The roll inside its tube of packaging material is brought by means not forming part of the invention into a position in which its axis is coaxial with the main shafts C of the two folding devices. In many cases the feed means are such as to ensure precise centering of the roll between the two pleating devices but in other cases where such centering cannot be guaranteed, each main shaft may have an internal bore. to accommodate a centering plunger, which can be advanced to protrude a predetermined distance from the end. of the shaft and can be retracted back into the shaft. Such an arrangement is incorporated in the variant shown in FIG. 7 and which will be described below.
In such a case, when the roll has been brought into position, the centering plungers of the two devices are advanced into their operating positions where they just engage the two ends of the roll inside the tube of material. packaging, when the two devices have been properly adjusted with relative spacing to accommodate the length of the roll. In this way, it is ensured that the roll is correctly centered between the two devices in the correct position ready for the folding operation. When this centering has been carried out, the two plungers are retracted again into their main shafts so as not to interfere with this pleating operation.
A sleeve E surrounds the main shaft C of the end bending device and is mounted thereon rotatably in suitable bearings C4, this sleeve E carrying near its front end a polygonal hub Et. A U-shaped member E2 is mounted on each of the flat phases of this hub and carries a pivot E3 on which a crank arm
E4 disposed between the branches of the member E2 is pivoted. Several crank shafts E4 are thus angularly spaced from each other around the polygonal hub El. It has been found in practice that a suitable number is eight, so that the crank arms are angularly spaced 450 from each other around an octagonal hub.
A collar F is keyed on the sleeve E and can slide axially the. along the latter, this collar bearing pivots for eight connecting rods F1, the other ends of which are respectively pivoted on the eight arms E4. Thus in the rest position shown in FIG. 3, with the collar F near the rear end of the sleeve E, the arms E4 extend radially outward from the octagonal hub And but when the collar F is moved forward along the sleeve, the arms E4 are tilted forward towards the roller, fig. 4 showing the crank arms in this advanced operating position.
Stops E9 are arranged on the arms E4 to limit the inward movements thereof.
The movements of the collar F along the sleeve E and the rotation of this sleeve can be carried out in any desired manner, but it has been found advantageous to carry out these operations by means of pressurized fluid devices. Thus, the collar F can have a circumferential groove in which a fork F2 engages on a lever F3 actuated by the plunger or piston of a pneumatic or hydraulic thrust cylinder F4 which can be pivoted on the frame element A, A1, A2.
The piston of another cylinder E5, the torque cylinder, pivoted on a universal joint relative to a support A on the frame member A, At, A2 can be connected to an outwardly extending arm EG from the sleeve E to rotate the sleeve. Such a universal joint may consist, for example as shown, of a pair of cardan shafts E7, E8 perpendicular to one another. Each of the cylinders E4, Es is supplied with pressurized fluid from the same source as the corresponding cylinder of the folding unit at the other end of the roller, thereby ensuring the simultaneous operation of the folding devices at both ends of the roller. roller.
A folding plate G is pivotally mounted on the end of each crank arm, this plate having an operative face which may be generally in the form of a sector, the pivot Gi being near the narrow end of this face. The shape and length of the arms E4 are such that when they swing forward the plates G engage the outside of the tube of packing material on the largest dimension of the roll in the range for which the the machine is intended to function.
The plates G are pushed outwards around their pivots Gt, by springs G2 (as shown in fig. 3) and when they come into engagement with the packing material, they pivot around the edge of the roll against the action of the springs until the active face of each folding plate presses the package against the end of the roll.
The dimensions and relative positions of the plates G are such that the wider end of the planar face of each plate overlaps the end of the roll itself a little so that when the arms E4 swing forward, each plate G Fold part of the protruding end of the packing material tube over the peripheral edge of the end of the roll. Continuing its movement, the arms E4 rotate the plates G so that the narrow ends of these plates press the packaging material closer to the end face of the roll until the flat face of each plate is folding presses part of said material against the end face of the roll.
Thus, at the end of the forward tilting of the crank arms a number of sector-shaped parts of the packaging material are pressed against the end face of the roll while between these parts appear t free folds of the packaging material.
This completes the inward folding movement and the sleeve E is now rotated angularly around the main shaft. This causes the plates G to be pressed against the end face of the roll to flatten the loose folds of the packaging material in the other folds. It has been found that an angular displacement t equal to one and a half times the angular gap between the crank arms E4 (i.e. about 670 when there are eight arms) is suitable for effecting a bending. complete and satisfactory of all packing material against the end of the roll.
Rotational movements to flatten the plies at both ends of the rollers can be in the same direction or in opposite directions, whichever is more convenient.
When the folding of the packing material against the ends of the roll is completed, the collar
F at each end is retracted along the sleeve E and the latter is turned back to bring all the parts back to the normal rest position, the end closure of the packaging material on the roll being completed, for example , attaching an adhesive seal by hand or mechanically over the pleated packaging material. It will be mentioned that it is not essential to rotate the sleeve E back to its original position at the end of the operation and if desired, such a sleeve can always turn in the same direction. to equal degrees for each pleating operation.
Such an arrangement will be described with reference to FIGS. 10 and 11.
In the variant which has just been described, the main shaft C of the folding device is prevented from rotating and carries a rotary sleeve E. In the variant shown in FIG. 7, the main shaft H of the pleating device is mounted in bearings Hl carried by the frame member A, Al, A2, so as to be able to rotate therein and the sleeve E is removed, the shaft itself - even performing the functions of this sleeve. Thus, the collar F is keyed on the shaft H so as to be able to rotate with the latter and to slide along this shaft to effect the displacement of the arms E4.
As mentioned above, FIG. 7 illustrates the means comprising a centering piston acting in cooperation with a similar piston at the other end to ensure correct longitudinal positioning of the roller. For this purpose, the tree
H has an internal bore H2 within the front end of which the centering piston H8 is housed.
I1 should actuate this piston by pressurized fluid, the piston H8 being connected at its rear end to a piston H4 sliding in a cylinder formed by a portion of larger diameter of the bore H2 of the shaft, the fluid under pressure being returned to this cylinder by the bore H2 in the shaft, the rear ends of the cylinders in the bores of the main shafts at both ends of the roller being supplied simultaneously with pressurized fluid to ensure the simultaneous operation of the two pistons of centering.
Thus, when the roller is brought into alignment with the two main shafts H and the frame members A, Ai,
A2 have been adjusted to suit the length of the roll, pressurized fluid is supplied behind the pistons so that the two centering plungers are brought into contact with both ends of the roll in the tube of packing material and perform the correct longitudinal positioning of the roller. The pressurized fluid is then discharged and the plungers return to their normal resting positions in the shafts under the action of the H5 springs.
Fine adjustment of the longitudinal position of the shaft H to adapt to the thickness of the packaging material is carried out in this construction by means of a ring H6 which abuts against a shoulder H7 on the shaft and is provided with a cam cooperating with a roller H8 mounted on the frame element A, Al,
A2, the cam and the roller being held in engagement with each other by means of a spring ring H9
Figs. 8 and 9 show on a larger scale folding plates G incorporated in the construction of FIG. 7.
The front face of the plate G is flat and has a sector shape, the side edges being provided on the rear side with ribs G3 of height gradually increasing t from the wide end of the plate towards the narrow end . The rear side of the plate is also provided with a central U-shaped rib G4 intended to receive between its branches the front edge of the crank arm E4 which has a plate shape. In this construction of the folding plate, the side edges of this plate are symmetrical with respect to a plane which extends in the direction of movement of the plate and contains the axis of the main shaft.
Such a symmetrical arrangement is however not essential and if desired the side edges can be inclined unequally on this plane, for example to help the following folding operation. For a similar purpose, the internal displacement of the folding plates does not necessarily take place in a plane passing through the main shaft axis but can be biased so as to be tangential to the circle surrounding this axis.
Figs. 10 and 11 schematically show a construction variant in which the movements of the folding plates are made by a drive shaft J rotating continuously.
This shaft carries a bevel gear Ji meshing with a bevel gear I to which is fixed a cam abutting against a roller J4 on a lever J8 to force the collar F to slide along the main shaft K of the folding device with a view to operate the crank arms and the folding plates. The shape of the JS cam is such that it causes the folding plates to tilt inward during each revolution of the drive shaft J and the retraction of these plates approximately half a revolution after they have been tilted towards. inside.
During t this half-revolution, with the plates in their cooperating inner position, the main shaft K is turned at a right angle by means of an escape wheel K1 which is fixed to the shaft.
K and is actuated by a K3 pin on a K2 crank arm wedged on the drive shaft J.
This J-shaft also carries a locking cam engaged with a circumferential depression of the safety wheel? ement Kt to prevent it from rotating except when it is driven by the arm K2.
The main shaft K does not go back in one. rest position after retraction n of the bending plates but rotates forward at a right angle during each revolution of the shaft J. In some cases the exhaust mechanism can be omitted and the main shaft K can also be rotated well during the inward movement of the bending plates than after this movement.
Fig. 12 schematically shows another alternative construction in which the folding plates move radially inward instead of being tilted inward on crank arms. In this construction, the main shaft
L of the folding unit carries a cross member Li on which are mounted pneumatic cylinders L8 angularly spaced at equal distances around the axis, one for each folding plate.
To simplify the drawing, only two of these cylinders have been shown. The plunger LO of each pneumatic cylinder L2 carries a pivot L4 for its folding plate L5, the directions of movement of these plungers extend in a radial plane at right angles to the axis of the main shaft L. Each folding plate L5 is actuated by a spring (not shown) in the same way as in the previous constructions.
The main shaft L is slidably mounted forward from a normal rest position to an operative position in which the folding plates are brought adjacent to the end of the roll to be wrapped, after which the pneumatic cylinders L2 are simultaneously activated. tioned to move the fold plates radially inward to fold the packing material.
When these plates have reached their extreme interior position, the shaft L is rotated at an angle to flatten the folds as already described above, after which the shaft L is slid to return it to its normal position of rest and the folding plates are moved outwards by their pneumatic cylinder L2. The necessary displacements of the main shaft can be made in any desired way, for example as in the preceding arrangements and, if desired, the spider L1 can be slid along the main shaft L instead of sliding l tree itself.
Although there is described a folding device used in a machine for wrapping rolls of different dimensions in a determined range, it is clear that one is not limited to this use.
command of the necessary movements. also be performed other than pneumatically, for example hydraulically, mechanically or electrically.
