<EMI ID=12.1>
n
Device for simultaneously forming the neck and the flange of metal boxes.
In the manufacture of metal cans which are ultimately intended to contain a beverage, the normal procedure is to decorate the formed can by screen printing, printing or some other process and then to perform two distinct and separate operations. First, a neck forming operation in which the diameter of the can is decreased by means of a die or by an embossing operation, a short distance, near the open end. This operation <EMI ID = 1.1> is followed by the formation of a flange, an operation in which the end part of the formed neck is widened outwards to obtain a flange. The decorated box with neck and flange is then shipped to the beverage maker who fills it and attaches one end to the flange to protect the contents from outside contamination.
The most important source of leaks in cans, either at the factory where the cans are made, or in the cannery, or both, are from cracked flanges. The slitting of the flanges occurs during the operation of forming them, as a result of the great tensile forces exerted ciroonferentially on the part of the neck of the box by the tools forming the flange. The tendency of the flanges to split is reinforced by the fact that the metal has been subjected to rather severe strain hardening during the neck forming operation. In addition, the compressive forces exerted by the tools forming the neck cause slight tendencies to wrinkle and "doubling". These tendencies act to increase stresses and initiate splitting during the next flange forming operation.
It goes without saying that split flanges result in loss of carbonation or content or contamination and waste of the product and therefore this defect should be avoided.
According to the present invention, the separate and distinct operations of forming the neck and the flange are eliminated and replaced by a single operation. An expandable and contractile mandrel is provided. In the contracted position, a box can be placed on and removed from the mandrel. In the expanded state, the mandrel clamps the entire inner surface of the box, while in the same position, the outer surface of the mandrel is massive, that is, it does not show any cracks or cracks to the box. welding that could allow the formation of wrinkles.
The mandrel is provided with an annular groove in which an elastic material is housed and a stopper is associated with the mandrel, so that when a box is placed thereon, its end which must be subjected to the forming operation of the mandrel. collar and flange covers the elastic material in the groove. The chuck has a number of relatively large segmented jaws capable of radial movement and between which are provided a number of cam-actuated jaws. When the cam structure is actuated, the jaws actuated by them move outward and push the segmented jaws also outward until, in the fully expanded position, the mandrel has a complete cylindrical surface. and uninterrupted which tightens the inside of the box.
In its fully expanded state, the mandrel does not present to the body of the box any cracks or welds which would allow the formation of wrinkles.
Whereas previously, the formation of the neck was carried out by means of a die wheel rolling outside the box, according to the present invention, the formation of the neck and the flange is carried out by means of a ring. matrix internally having the shape of a matrix. In this way conditions close to a "closed die" are obtained and much better control of the material being formed is obtained than by the methods known hitherto. The joint action of the die ring against the end of the box and against
the resilient material results in controlling the flow of the metal and eliminating a tendency of the metal to wrinkle in the neck region.
The die ring can be free or driven
<EMI ID = 2.1> peripheral of the region of the neck of the box after forming. If the die ring is driven, a freewheel clutch is provided, so that the speed of the ring can be increased by frictional contact with the rotating box. The peripheral speed will, of course, gradually decrease as the neck is formed and the diameter is reduced, until, at the final stage of forming, control can again be made through the throttle clutch. freewheel.
The die ring is mounted for a radially directed movement relative to the axis of the box and the shape of the die is such that it allows the operation of forming the neck and the flange to be carried out simul + anely. .

Reference can be made to FIG. 9 for the general arrangement of the apparatus. In this figure, a supporting structure is indicated at 10 and a control shaft, designated by 11, can be driven by any means, from an appropriate source of energy, not shown. or any other suitable device (not shown), The mandrel is generally designated by 13 and a device for bringing the boxes to it is designated by 14; a

mandrel 13. A ring-die is denoted by 1 and is rotatably mounted in a suitable frame 17 capable of radial movement, so that the rotating ring-die 16 can be caused to move radially relative to the mandrel 13. A again, the frame 17 can be moved by a pneumatic or hydraulic device, not shown.
Referring to Figures 1 to 6 inclusive, the shaft 12 is provided with a number of cam-shaped elements 18 and 19. As shown in Figures 2 and 3, in the particular embodiment illustrated, there are three sets of cams 18 and 19 arranged at 120 [deg.] From each other. The chuck clamping jaws are formed by the three cylinder segments 20 and the three wedge-shaped cylinder elements 21. The elements 21 have on their inner surface the slopes of cams 22 and 23 which cooperate, respectively, with the cams 18 and 19. It is clear from the above that when the shaft 12 moves to the left in Figures 1 and 4 , the cam surfaces
18 and 19 cooperating with the surfaces 22 and 23 force the elements 21 radially outwards.
The wedge-shaped side surfaces of the elements 21 act against the flat inner surfaces of the cylindrical segments 20, to force them outwards, as can be seen by comparing Figures 2 and 3. The elements 21 have a surface. which is part of the cylinder, so that when
the mandrel is expanded and brought to the position of figure 3, there is a massive cylindrical surface which is presented inside the box. Each of the elements
20 is provided with pins 24 and consequently the elements
20 adjacent ones are pushed towards each other, with a view to
contraction, by means of springs 25 extending between the pins 24. In this way, as the shaft 12 moves to the right of Figures 1 and 4, the springs
25 recall the elements 20 in the position of FIG. 2.

can be provided with stepped exterior surfaces and have steps 18a and 19a as well as final exterior surfaces 18b and 19b. The radial height of the final step above the first step may be of the order of 0.254 mm. The cams 22 and 23 being in contact with the steps 18a and 19a, this configuration ensures sufficient clearance between the mandrel and the body of the box for easy loading before the complete expansion which occurs when the cams 22 and 23 are in contact with the final steps 18b and 19b.
The movement of the shaft 12 to the left, that is to say from the position of Figure 1 to that of Figure 4, also blocks the expanded mandrel. A locking cap 40 is attached to the end of the shaft 12 by a bolt 41. As shown in Figure 4, the cap 40 bears firmly against the floating locking member 42 which locks the segments 20 and 21 against everything. axial movement. In addition, the expanded segments 20 have shoulders
43 and 44 abutting against the parts 42a of the locking member 42 and the parts 44a of the body of the mandrel.
The shaft 12 can be provided with a passage 26 through which a jet of air can be introduced to expel, by blowing it, a completed box. The elements 20 have extensions 20a which are inclined as illustrated to facilitate the insertion of a box on the mandrel.
The chuck is fitted with a box stop under

in which is housed an element 29 of an elastic material such as urethane rubber. Element 29
<EMI ID = 8.1>
I after what has been said above it is
<EMI ID = 9.1> in figure 1, a box (indicated by chain stitch lines, at 15, in figure 1) can be placed on the mandrel by means of the designated feeder <EMI ID = 10.1>
on the sa.idrin until its open end abuts CI stop 27. The shaft 12 then moves to the right, under the action of a suitable means (not shown), in order to causing the cam surfaces 18 and 19 to cooperate respectively with the cam surfaces 22 and 23 to force the various elements 21 outwardly, thereby effectively moving the elements 20 apart from each other from position of Figure 2, up to the full cylindrical position of Figure 3, without gap or line of demarcation between the different segments 20 and 21. The box is therefore clamped over its entire inner surface. The shaft 12 is then rotated by appropriate means (not shown) in order to perform the operation of forming the neck and the flange.
The die ring has been designated 16 in Figure 9 and is shown in cross section in Figures 10 to 14 inclusive and in elevation in Figure 8. As previously indicated, the die ring 16 is rotatably mounted in any suitable manner in a manner. frame 17 which is arranged to move <EMI ID = 11.1> The specific arrangements for moving the frame 17 radially have not been shown to simplify the drawing and on the other hand these devices are well known in this field and within reach of any mechanic.
The inner surface of the die ring
16 has the shape most clearly seen in Figure 10, at 31, to press the wall of the box near its end into the groove 28, against the elastic material 29.
In Figure 11, the mandrel is in the contracted position and the die ring is centered. In this position, the box 15 is placed on the mandrel against the stop 27. In Figure 12, the mandrel has been expanded to clamp the box and the die ring 16 is still centered. At this time, the mandrel is driven in rotation. In Figure 13, the die ring 16 has been moved radially and at the same time forms the neck and the flange at the end of the wall of the box. In Figure 14, the operation has been completed, the die ring is again centered and the mandrel is contracted so that the box can be removed. The box can be removed by conventional means, for example by blowing it by means of a jet of air introduced through passage 26.
Referring to Figure 10, it will be noted that the flange 15a of the box when the latter is completed, is approximately the same diameter as before the start of the operation. As a result, the tension in the flange region of the box is practically zero during the entire operation and therefore the tendency to splitting is essentially eliminated.
The die ring can be disposed freely in the frame 17 so that it is rotated by the contact with the box during the operation of forming the neck and the flange. It has been found in practice that this gives satisfaction. However, it may be desirable to drive the flange and in this case a freewheel clutch is employed. If the matrix ring
16 must be driven, it is important that the peripheral speed of the inner surface thereof is equal to the peripheral speed of the outer surface of the box body. As the peripheral speed varies with the radius of rotation of the gearbox body, it will be understood that when the die ring 16 moves radially inward, the peripheral speed decreases until the completion of the shift operation. formation of the neck and the bridle, the peripheral speed in this region is at its minimum. Consequently, the die ring will be driven at this minimum speed, but the overrunning clutch will be provided to allow the ring to be driven faster than this minimum speed during the initial phases of the forming operation. collar and flange.
The effective control of the ring matrix 16 therefore takes over at the end of the operation
<EMI ID = 12.1>
initial, the control is ensured by friction with the intervention of the free-release clutch. In most cases, the use of the overrunning clutch schematically illustrated in figure 8 will not be necessary and
very satisfactory results can be obtained by means of a friction control between the die ring and the body of the box. The overrunning clutch of Figure 8 is entirely conventional, in that it employs an outer ring 32 with a series of rollers 33 housed in wedge-shaped recesses, so that with relative rotation between them. elements 16 and 32 in one direction, there is no impediment, while in the other
direction, the rollers 33 get stuck and determine a
