Milling cutter for cutting teeth by generation and method of manufacturing said milling cutter The present patent relates, on the one hand, to a milling cutter for cutting teeth by generation, in toothed wheels such as, for example, wheels or pinions watchmaking, and, on the other hand, a method of manufacturing said milling cutter.
It is known that the generation machining process is commonly applied for the manufacture of toothed mo biles such as pinions and wheels used in watch movements. On the other hand, it is also known that the use of hard metal tools makes it possible to increase the speed of machining of the parts, as well as their precision.
Thus, hard metal cutters are already known which make it possible to cut gears, watch mobiles, by generation. Some of these cutters have only one tooth, which facilitates the adjustment of the various elements of the milling machine and, in particular, the calculation and adjustment of the angle of incidence of the milling machine.
However, in order to be able to machine wheels and pinions of different dimensions, and of different modules, it was necessary to have a complete set of cutters having not only different diameters and profiles, but also inclinations. of different teeth.
In addition, if the hard metal cutters come in one piece, allow more rational machining than carbon steel cutters, they are expensive and their manufacture presents many difficulties. The sharpening of these cutters is also a difficult operation.
The milling cutter which is the subject of this patent overcomes these drawbacks by virtue of the fact that it comprises a removable, interchangeable element.
Indeed, this cutter is characterized in that it consists of a rotary support having a flat bearing surface and an interchangeable hard metal element, having a single tooth, fixed to the support in a position such that said tooth protrudes laterally from said support, this element being pressed against said flat surface.
To manufacture this cutter according to the process which is also the subject of this patent, teeth of constant profile and offset are machined at the periphery of a circular hard metal disc having two parallel flat faces and a circular central opening, then said disc is radially cut so as to form at least one. hard metal element having a single tooth, said element having the shape of an annular sector.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of the cutter, the subject of the present patent and illustrates an example of implementation of the process for manufacturing this cutter.
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a hard metal disk used in the exemplary implementation of this method, FIG. 2. a partially cut elevation view of this disc, FIG. 3 a sectional view along the line I11-111 of FIG. 4, of said embodiment of the cutter, and FIG. 4 a side elevational view of this cutter.
To make the strawberry of fig. 4, a disc 1 (Fig. 1) is used made of hard metal based on tungsten carbide having two flat faces 2 and 3 parallel, along the axis of which a circular opening 4 is pierced and the periphery of which has a series of teeth 5. These teeth, six in number, are all identical. Their width is a little less than the thickness of the disc 1. At one of their ends, they are met by a radial flat face 6. The profile of each tooth 5 has the shape and dimensions of the space between two teeth of a set of teeth of given modulus.
This profile is constant, but the edge of each tooth 5 follows a spiral line gradually approaching the center. At its other end, each tooth ends with a concave face 7, forming a connection between the peripheral edge and the massive part of the disc 1 and delimiting the zone of clearance of the tooth. The manufacture of this disk -y-ut is made according to known methods. It is known, in fact, that it is possible .de cut teeth such as teeth 5 having the relief described and whose profile is constant, by means of a shaped diamond grinding wheel.
Once the machining of the disc 1 is completed, this disc is divided into sectors by sectioning it along radii 8 between each of the teeth 5. Six identical sectors 9 are thus obtained, one of which is used in the milling cutter shown in ± g. 3 and 4.
The latter comprises, in addition to the sector 9, a shaft 10, a support ring 11 and a nut 12. The end of the shaft 10 forms a cylindrical tenon 13, partially threaded, which is limited by a plane annular shoulder 14. .
The profa of the Il ring-support is rectangular. This ring has a central opening adjusted to the diameter of the tenon 13 so as to be able to engage with gentle friction on this tenon. Its width is a little greater than the length of the non-threaded part of the tenon 13. Once in place, as seen in FIG. 4, the ring 11 presses against the shoulder 14. It is held by the nut 12. In the cylindrical side face of the ring 11, a slot 15 is flanged, the two sides 15a of which , 15b are parallel.
The depth of this slot 15 is such that it reaches the central opening of the ring 11 and thus uncovers the tenon 13. The slot 15 extends in a direction slightly oblique with respect to the axis of the shaft 10. The dihedral angle formed between the planes which define the sides of the slot 15 and a plane perpendicular to the axis of the shaft 10 is chosen according to the pitch of the teeth to be cut and the diameter of the cutter, in order to to obtain a straight toothing.
In the vicinity of one of its ends, the slot 15 is connected to that of the lateral faces of the ring 11 to which it is closest by a narrower slot 16 which extends according to a plane passing through the axis of the shaft 10. A radial groove 17 made in the same face of the ring 11 opposite the other end of the slot 15 and the slot 16 delimit a door 18 of the ring 11 which does not is attached to the rest of this ring only by a thin segment extending below the bottom of the groove 17.
This portion 18 which closes the slot 15 on the side of the nut 12, protrudes from the rest of the anterior face of the ring 11, at a height of 0.02 mm from this face.
The width of the slot 15 being equal to the thickness of the disc 1, the segment 9 can be engaged without play in this slot. Its concave internal edge coming into contact with the lateral face of the tenon 13 in the bottom of the slot 15 determines the position of this sector 9 on the shelf. The orientation of this sector around the shaft 10 can be adjusted by displacement along the slot 15. A mark 19 marked in the side face of the ring 11 allows the sector 9 to be placed in the desired position. To do this, it suffices to bring the front cutting face 6 of the sector 9 into coincidence with the mark 19.
When the nut 12 is tightened, the latter begins by pressing the ring 11 against the shoulder 14, thus determining its exact axial position, then it presses the sector 9 against the side 15a of the slot 15 thanks to the elasticity of the portion 18. The ring 11 and the shaft 10 could also have one projection and the other a corresponding housing, in order to prevent any risk of rotation of the ring 11 during the tightening of the 'nut 12.
The one-tooth cutter thus formed can be used to cut toothing of a given modulus in a wheel or in a pinion. To do this, it suffices to place the milling cutter opposite a disc intended to constitute this wheel or this pinion, so that the axis of the shaft 10 forms with the plane of this wheel, a well determined angle and 'drive the wheel and the cutter at such speeds that one revolution of the cutter corresponds to a step length advance of the wheel.
In other embodiments, the sector 9 could also be formed by a portion larger or smaller than a sixth of the initial disc. The support ring intended to receive this sector would then have a slot 15 of length adapted to that of the sector extending over a larger or smaller portion of its periphery.
The sectors 9 which can be used in the cutter described can also be used in other similar cutters, but the support ring of which has a slot having a different inclination. Thus, a set of sectors with different profiles can be combined with a set of support rings, the slots of which are variously inclined, in order to allow machining of any toothing.
In yet another embodiment, the slot 15 of the support ring 11 could also be made in a plane strictly perpendicular to the axis of the shaft 10. In this case, the sectors 9, at Instead of having teeth extending along a plane parallel to their front face at their periphery, each would have a tooth oblique with respect to this front face.
In this case, a single support ring mounted on a shaft of given dimensions would make it possible to machine by means of a set of suitable sectors of the teeth of all dimensions. The support ring 11 of the cutter described is made of brass in order to have sufficient elasticity; however = alternatively, it could also be made of another metal.
The milling cutter described constitutes a rational tool for machining the toothings of watch mobiles. Indeed, it can be easily adapted to the different diameters and to the different moduli of the den tures to be machined.
In addition, the hard metal sector in which the single tooth is cut: of this milling cutter, can be easily sharpened after being extracted from its support ring.
