Method and apparatus for filtering liquids
The invention relates to the filtration of liquids in which the filter cake produced by the deposition of solids on the filter element is removed periodically. Such operations are generally performed using a plate and frame filter press from which the cake is removed after the press is disassembled when the pressure drop becomes high enough, or using a rotating vacuum filter which continuously pushes the cake off.
The first method involves manual labor and intermittent operation of the filter. The rotating vacuum filter allows continuous operation, but cannot be quickly adapted to different operating requirements. It is accordingly the object of the present invention to provide an improved method and means for filtering liquids which avoid these disadvantages.
The invention consists in a method for filtering liquids in the following stages: passing the liquid through a porous filter element or a group of such elements with a relatively rigid permeable surface for the purpose of depositing precipitated solids on said surface in the form of a cake; periodic interruption of the supply of filter liquid and mechanical removal of the deposited cake by a stripping operation during the filter breaks.
The invention also consists in an apparatus for filtering liquids, with a porous filter element or a group of such elements with a relatively rigid porous surface for receiving precipitated solids thereon in the form of a cake, with means for periodically interrupting the supply of filter liquid , stripping means adapted to move over said porous surface in order to remove the deposited cake therefrom, and means for effecting such displacement of the scraping means during the filter breaks.
The wiping means is preferably arranged to move back and forth over said surface and a preferred construction has a cylindrical or tubular filter element.
This filter element can be arranged vertically, in the interior of which an annular scraper is arranged on a construction that moves vertically up and down, the lower end of which carries a closure plate for a drain opening for solids at the lower end of a filter chamber that carries the filter element encloses, said closure plate and the outlet opening have a conical, downwardly widening edge and form a sealing closure.
In a preferred Ausfüllrung of the invention, the structure carrying the scraper is designed as a cylinder which can be moved back and forth via a stationary piston, and means are provided for supplying a pressurized fluid, e.g. B. compressed air, on one or the other Scitc of the piston to move the cylinder back and forth. Said cylinder construction is also provided at its lower end with a conical, downwardly widening shield in order to prevent an accumulation of fallen solids on the closure plate.
A preferred form of a filter element consists of a layer of permeable material such as cloth or processed cellulose fibers with or without a pre-covering from a prefilter, as well as a perforated sheet metal or a perforated plate made of other rigid material on which the filter cake is deposited. The filter layer or the filter layers are preferably enclosed between perforated plates made of metal or some other rigid material.
In a preferred apparatus according to the invention, valve-controlled means are provided for the supply of filtering liquid and for draining off filtrate as well as for the supply of water liquid and drying air to the filter for rinsing the filter in the reverse direction and for supplying pre-coating substance to the filter.
Said valves are preferably actuated by an underpressurized fluid under the control of switching valves, the operational sequence of which is controlled by an operational sequence controller.
In the accompanying drawings are
Figure I is a side view of a vertical section through a filtering apparatus according to one form of the invention;

Fig. 3 is a schematic of the control connection for the apparatus of Fig. L.
In an embodiment of the invention described by way of example with reference to the drawings, a cylindrical, vertically arranged chamber 1 is mounted on a support plate 2 which is carried by a frame (not shown).
The chamber I is closed by a cover plate 3. Arranged in the center of the chamber 1 and resting on the plate 2 is a tubular filter element 4, which consists of perforated metal drums 5 and 6 arranged at a radial distance from one another, between which there is a tubular filter cloth 7 with a filter aid 8 on its inside is occupied, which is held in place by tubular wire gauze 9, which rests against the inner perforated drum. The ends of the filter cloth 7 are wrapped around the outside of rings 10 which are attached to the outside of the drum 5 at the upper and lower edges thereof.
The upper end of the filter unit 4 is held by a sealing ring 11 which has a peripheral seal 12 which extends over the inside of the chamber 1. An inlet 13 for the supply of compressed air leads into a space 14 at the top of the chamber. A filtrate outlet 15 leads through the carrier plate 2 out of the space between the filter unit 4 and the chamber 1. The carrier plate 2 has a central opening 16 with a conical edge which widens downwards and which can be closed by a closure plate 17 with a complementary conical edge which carries a sealing ring 18.
An upwardly extending air cylinder 19 is fastened centrally to the closure plate 17 and carries a cover 20 at the top, the length of the cylinder being approximately equal to the length of the filter unit 4. The cover 20 protrudes laterally beyond the air cylinder 19 and on this protruding part, which has openings 21, an annular scraper 22 is arranged in such a way that it contacts the inner surface of the perforated drum 6. The wiper 22 is preferably made of flexible material wic leather or synthetic rubber, which has the shape of a ring with a downwardly outwardly directed annular flange with ver younger cross-section, the thin end of which the drum 6 touches as in FIG.
At the lower end of the air cylinder 19, a conical, obliquely outwardly sloping shield 23 made of perforated sheet metal is attached.
A cylindrical collecting chamber 24 is attached under the carrier plate 2, the open lower end of which opens onto a conveyor belt 25. Within the chamber, a support plate 27 for the lower end of a resting hollow Kol benstangc 28 is arranged centrally by means of support rods 26, which carries a piston 29 arranged in the air cylinder 19 at its upper end. The piston rod 28 passes through an opening in the closure plate 17, which is sealed by a sealing ring 30. Slits 31 at the upper end of the piston rod 28 lead into the space below the piston 29. An inner piston rod 32 leads into the space above the piston and its lower end is connected to an air line 33. A second air line 34 leads into the space between the two piston rods 28 and 32.
The arrangement is such that by admitting compressed air through the line 34 into the space under the fixed piston 29, the closure plate 17 and the cylinder 19 mounted on it are pressed downwards, whereby the scraper 22 moves along the inside of the drum 6 until the plate 17 assumes the position 17a of FIG. 1 indicated by a dash-dotted line. Letting in compressed air through the line 33 into the space above the piston 29 and opening the line 34 for emptying leads the closure plate 17 and the cylinder 19 back to their original position.
Fig. 3 shows the valves which control the various connections of the filtration apparatus. A compressed air source 35 is connected to the inlet line 13 through a regulator 36 and a valve 37 in order to loosen and dry the filter cake before it is removed. The valve 37 is controlled by a switching valve 37a, operated by liquid or gas pressure.
Liquid to be filtered is fed through a line 39 to the inlet 38, which has a flexible line connection, through a power-operated valve 40 which is controlled by a switching valve 40a and, if necessary, through a power-operated valve 42 which is controlled by a switching valve 42a is controlled, can be returned to an outlet 41. The filtrate outlet 15 is controlled by a power-operated valve 43, which in turn is controlled by a switching valve 43a. The outlet 15 can, if necessary, also be connected to a trigger through a power-operated valve 44 which is controlled by a switching valve 44a.
If the filter is to be rinsed in the opposite direction, certain liquid is admitted through a power-operated valve 45 which is controlled by a switching valve 45a. Washing of the filter by admitting liquid to the inlet 38 is controlled by a power-operated valve 46 which is controlled by a Switching valve 46a is controlled.
The filter cloth 7 of the filter unit is also precoated with filter aid.
Such filter aid can consist of diatomaceous, pearlitic or amorphous silicic acid or of carbonaceous or cellulosic materials.
The filter aid is supplied in suspended form in a liquid through a line 47, under the control of a power operated valve 48 which is controlled by a switching valve 48a.
There is also a discharge connection 49 from the filter inlet 38. It has a force-controlled valve 50 which is controlled by a switching valve 50a.
The vertical reciprocation of the filter structure, as described above, is accomplished by compressed air supplied at 51, the entry and exit of which is effected by two power operated three-way cocks 52 and 53 controlled by switching valves 52a and 53a, respectively. The above-mentioned power-operated valves are operated by compressed air under the control of the switching valves. An operation sequence controller 54 is provided for the automatic operation of the filter apparatus, which ensures that the various operations are carried out in the correct order.
During operation of the apparatus, the filtration begins when the filter assembly 4 is in the position shown in FIG. 1, the opening 38 at the base of the chamber 1 being closed by the plate 17. The liquid to be filtered enters at 38 and the filtrate is drawn off at 15 when chamber I is closed by plate 17 and valve 37 is closed. When the thickness of the filter cake has reached the appropriate level, the filtration is interrupted and the stripping device actuated in order to detach the cake which falls through the opening 16 and the chamber 24 and is carried away by the conveyor belt 25. The shield 23, together with the conical shape of the plate 17, ensures that the sealing surfaces remain free from broken filter cake.
The scraper is then returned to its limit position and the filtering process begins again. Further operations, such as the precoating of the filter element with a filter aid, the washing and drying of the cake and the counter-rinsing of the filter element can be carried out in the manner described above and the various interruptions can be controlled automatically in any suitable order, and all this also at a speed which we @@@@@ guarantee the most effective use of the filter element and in which the quantities involved are such that the lowest possible moisture content of the loosened cake is achieved.
It is clear that the time periods involved for filtering and removing the cake widen
Allow limits to vary to suit the various operating conditions that occur.
The invention is not limited to the example described, as there are other means for the reciprocating movements. of the scraper and can be used for actuating the various control valves. The invention can also be applied to a filter apparatus with a non-cylindrical filter element.
