Device for automatic release of the tool at the end of the turning or threading stroke on a lathe The object of the invention is a device for the automatic release of the tool at the end of the turning or threading stroke, on a lathe having a longitudinal carriage and a transverse carriage, a screw for moving the transverse carriage resting on the longitudinal carriage by means of thrust bearings and a sleeve,
in which at least one stop fixed to the bench of the lathe and adjustable in the direction of movement of the longitudinal carriage is capable of acting on an actuating slide movable parallel to the bench in a housing fixed to the longitudinal carriage, to cause a axial movement of said sleeve.
The main object of the invention is to create an improved device of this type, which does not allow, in any phase of its operation, unwanted movement, even minimal, of the transverse carriage relative to the longitudinal carriage.
According to the invention, this device comprises a stud fixed to said sleeve and cooperating with the actuating slide so that the sleeve is retained fixed in a direction transverse to the longitudinal carriage until this slide is actuated by the stop and that the consecutive movement of the slide, caused by this stop, is transformed desmodromically into a corresponding axial movement of the sleeve, via the stud.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, one embodiment of the device.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a tower equipped with the device, FIG. 2 is a plan view of the device, partly in section, FIG. 3 is a vertical view taken on line 111-111 of FIG. 2, and fig. 4 is a vertical section through a stop which is part of the device.
In fig. 1 denotes by A and B, respectively, the longitudinal carriage and the transverse carriage of a turning and threading lathe, and by C two stops fixed to the bed D of the lathe. Each of these stops comprises a block 10 which can be locked to the bench D by tightening two screws 11 which cooperate with a nut 12, a finger 12a of which is engaged in a longitudinal groove made in one of the faces of the bench. It further comprises a rod 13 which can be blocked in the body 10 by tightening a screw 14. A stop screw can be adjusted longitudinally in a threaded hole in the rod 13, then blocked by tightening a lock nut 16.
The movement of the transverse carriage B on the longidutinal carriage A, during an adjustment or a leveling of a workpiece, is done as usual by turning a control screw 17 which cooperates with a nut 18 fixed to the transverse carriage B. The control screw 17 is kept axially fixed during these movements by means of a thrust bearing which comprises a sleeve 19.
A main part of the release device consists of a square stud 20 fixed to the sleeve 19 by means of a screw 21. The sides of this stud 20 are inclined at 45 against the directions of movement of the carriages A and B, as can be seen from see in fig 2. A housing 22 is fixed to the longitudinal carriage A by means of screws 23. In this housing two actuating slides 24, 25 are guided to be movable in the direction of movement of the longitudinal carriage. Each of them is supported, by the intermediary of a row of needles 26, on a rule 27 and 28, respectively.
These slides have a rack toothing with which they are engaged with a pinion 29 carried by a pin 30 mounted in the housing 22 by means of two ball bearings 31. They have on their faces opposite to each other a triangular cam 24a and 25a respectively; these cams have ramps of the same inclination as the faces of the stud to which they are parallel; they are exactly opposite each other when the sliders are at halfway.
When the screws 23 are released, the housing 22 can be moved from the position shown in solid lines to that shown in phantom in FIG. 2; the two positions are determined by a screw 32 anchored in the housing and carrying a pair of nuts 33, in cooperation with a pierced stud 34 anchored in the longitudinal carriage A.
The operating mode is as follows: Assuming that the slides 24, 25 occupy the position shown in FIG. 2, the slide 24 will meet the stop C shown to the right of FIG. 2, when the carriage A has reached, in its movement to the right, a position depending on that of this stop. This slide 24 will then be moved to the left relative to the housing 22 and its cam 24a will act on the stud 20. The movement of the slide 24 will then be transformed desmodromically into a corresponding axial movement of the sleeve 19, therefore of the carriage. transverse B, in order to release the tool (or re-engage).
The cam 25a of the slider 25 allows this displacement because it moves to the right (relative to the housing) as the slider 24 moves to the left. As for the end of the opposite stroke of the carriage A, the slide 24 is actuated to the right by the other stop C, the pinion 25 transmits its movement to the slide 25 which in turn acts on the stud 20 to move the transverse carriage. B in the opposite direction.
It can easily be seen if the housing 22 is placed in the position indicated in phantom, the directions of movement of the transverse carriage are reversed for the same directions of movement of the longitudinal carriage. To effect this change of position, the slides are not acted on but the carriage B is moved so that the stud 20 slides between the bulges 24a, 25a.
One could imagine a lot of detail changes. For example, it would be possible to provide only a slide having a slot or groove consisting of two longitudinal end sections and an inclined intermediate section. Such a variant would not, however, allow such a precise determination, practically free of play, of the position of the sleeve and therefore of that of the transverse carriage for a certain adjustment of the control screw 17.
