Man erhält etwa reiskorngrosse Teil chen.

Flame-retardant plastic and process for the production of such The main patent relates to a flame-retardant plastic which contains polymers or mixed polymers of optionally substituted styrene and is characterized in that it also contains an ester of 2,3-dibromopropanol-1.
It also relates to a process for producing such a plastic, which process is characterized in that optionally substituted styrene is subjected to a polymerization and an ester of 2,3-di-bromopropanol-1 is added at the latest after the polymerization reaction and it is ensured that a plastic is produced as a homogeneous mixture.
Although it is true that one obtains flame retardant mixtures with excellent properties from styrene polymers and esters of 2,3-dibromopropanol-1, since the esters have practically no plasticizing effect and also during the polymerization or interpolymerization of the styrene in the presence the ester no disadvantages due to chain termination reactions are to be feared, the use of these esters to make styrene polymers flame-retardant in some cases leads to complications. The polymerisation of styrene in aqueous suspension, in which the esters can be partially saponified, should be mentioned here primarily. The disintegration of the esters into alcohol and acid can then lead to premature coagulation of the suspension or to other disadvantages.
These disadvantages can be avoided by the present invention while maintaining the advantages offered by the use of the ester of 2,3-dibromopropanol-1.
The invention relates to a flame-retardant plastic which contains polymers or copolymers of styrene and is characterized in that it also contains an acetal or an ether of 2,3-di-bromopropanol-1.
The polymers or copolymers can be foamable or porous.
The invention also relates to a method for the manufacture of such a flame-retardant plastic, which is characterized in that styrene is subjected to polymerization or copolymerization and, at the latest after the polymerization or copolymerization, an acetal or an ether of 2,3-dibromopropanol 1 and ensures that a homogeneous mixture of plastic is created.
The bromine compounds are preferably added to the monomeric styrene, whereupon the mixture can be polymerized by known processes. Neither the molecular weight nor the softening range of the styrene polymers are significantly changed. The acetals and ethers of 2,3-dibromopropanol-1 are also stable under the usual conditions of the suspension polymerization of styrene, so that there is no risk of the suspensions coagulating prematurely.
Suitable acetals are, for example, those of 2,3-dibromopropanol-1 with chloral, formaldehyde, glyoxal, dibromopropionaldehyde, acetaldehyde and the like.
The bromine-containing ethers can be made by adding bromine to the corresponding allyl ethers. Of the ethers of 2,3-dibromopropanol-1, for example, the bromination products of methyl allyl ether and the higher homologues, dialyl ethers, ethylene glycol diallyl ethers, glycerol triallyl ethers, pentaerythritol tetraallyl ethers, butenediol diallyl ethers and the like, trimethyl allyl ethers in question, and trimethyl allyl ethers.
The amount of bromine-containing acetals or ethers is expediently chosen so that the bromine content in the finished mixture, based on the weight of the styrene polymer, is 0.5 to 6 percent by weight. The bromine content should preferably be approximately 1.5 to 5 percent by weight.
The bromine compounds can be added to the finished styrene polymers, it being possible to use the mixing equipment customary in the plastics industry, such as calenders, kneaders or extruders. The bromine compounds are preferably added to the monomers before or during the polymerization. In this way, flame-retardant styrene polymers are obtained directly without any additional mechanical or thermal treatment. In addition, a homogeneous distribution of the flame-retardant bromine compounds in the styrene polymers can be achieved particularly easily in this way.
The polymerization is generally carried out in a known manner. You can polymerize in the block or by the suspension, solution or emulsion process. The suspension or bead polymerization process with polymerization temperatures between 40 and 100 ° C. is preferably used. To stimulate the polymerization, it is useful to use free radical polymerization catalysts, for example peroxides such as benzoyl peroxide, lauroyl peroxide, cyclohexanone peroxide, or azo compounds such as azodiisobutyronitrile.
Other monomeric compounds, preferably other vinyl compounds, such as core- or side-chain-substituted styrenes, acrylonitrile, vinylcarbazole, acrylic esters, methyl methacrylate, vinyl esters and the like can be copolymerized with the styrene. The styrene polymers are advantageously made up of at least 50% styrene. Linear styrene polymers with thermoplastic properties are of particular interest for the invention. However, branched or crosslinked styrene polymers can also be used, eg. B. those that contain small amounts of a bifunctional compound polymerized.
Among these polymers, particularly slightly branched styrene polymers with up to 1% divinylbenzene or another divinyl compound are suitable.
According to one embodiment of the invention which is of particular interest, foamable, flame-retardant plastics can be produced by adding a blowing agent to the mixtures of monomeric styrene and the ether or acetal of 2,3-dibromopropanol-1 is able to ex pandier the finished styrene polymer when heated. Such propellants are z. B. easily volatile liquids that preferably do not dissolve the Styrolpoly merisate, or gases.
Examples of such liquid propellants are aliphatic and cycloaliphatic hydrocarbons with boiling points or boiling limits between 20 and 60 ° C., such as petroleum ether, pentane, hexane, cyclopentane or cyclohexane. Other suitable propellants are, for example, propane, butane and gaseous halogenated hydrocarbons such as difluorodichloromethane. The blowing agent-containing mixtures can be foamed by heating them to temperatures above the softening range of the styrene polymers. This gives flame-retardant porous art materials with closed cells of low specific weight, which are used in numerous areas of tech nology, eg.
B. can be used as insulation material against heat, cold and sound.
It is also possible to produce flame-retardant, foamable plastics by subsequently treating the styrene polymers, which have been made flame-retardant by adding the acetal or ether, with a blowing agent. In general, however, preference is given to adding the acetals or ethers and the propellants to the monomer.
The term flame retardant is intended to mean that the plastics only burn in an external flame, but that they do not burn without an external flame and that an already existing fire goes out after the external flame has been removed.
The parts mentioned in the examples below are parts by weight.
Example I A mixture of 4000 parts of water, 13 parts of barium sulfate, 1940 parts of styrene, 6 parts of benzoyl peroxide and 60 parts of formaldehyde di (2,3-dibromopropyl) acetal is in a The stirred autoclave was heated to 70 ° C. for 25 hours and to 80 ° C. for 10 hours. The resulting polymer precipitates in the form of small spheres. It is filtered off, washed and dried at 70.degree.
The product has practically the same properties as standard polystyrene. The molecular weight and softening point are only slightly reduced. Moldings produced by injection molding are difficult to burn if they are held in a flame. After removing the external flame they go out immediately.
Example 2 A mixture of 4000 parts of water, 13 parts of barium sulfate, 1940 parts of styrene, 6 parts of benzoyl peroxide and 60 parts of di (2,3-dibromopropyl) ether is prepared under the same conditions as in Example 1 treated. A polymer is obtained which also has good mechanical test values and whose molecular weight and softening point are barely reduced. Moldings produced by injection molding have the same flame retardancy as those produced according to Example 1.
Example 3 6000 parts of water, 82 parts of a protective colloid which consists of a copolymer of 95 ° N-vinylpyrrolidone and 5% methyl acrylate, 5 parts of sodium pyrophosphate, 5600 parts of styrene and 1030 parts of a -Methylstyrene, 31 parts of benzoyl peroxide and 10 parts of di-tert-butyl peroxide, 416 parts of petroleum ether (boiling point 25 to 35 C) and 280 parts of formaldehyde di- (2,3-dibromopropyl) acetal are in a stirred tank under 3 Atü nitrogen heated to 70 ° C. for 20 hours and to 100 ° C. for 10 hours.
The resulting polymer is washed and dried at room temperature. Rice-grain-sized particles are obtained.
When heated to 95 to 100 C, e.g. B. in boiling water, the resulting plastic puffs up to thirty to forty times its original volume and can be processed by suitable shapes to plat, blocks or moldings of any kind. The density of these foam bodies is 20 to 30 kg / m3.
If the propellant has evaporated after storage at 40 to 50 C, the foam body burns only with difficulty and goes out immediately after removing the external flame.
Example 4 1000 parts of water, 3 parts of the protective colloid from Example 3, 0.1 part of sodium pyrophosphate, 764 parts of styrene, 191 parts of acrylonitrile, 45 parts of glyoxal tetra- (2,3-dibromopropyl) acetal 3.5 parts of benzoyl peroxide and 75 parts of petroleum ether (boiling point 35 to 50 ° C.) are heated to 70 ° C. for 30 hours with stirring in a stirred kettle after injecting 4 atmospheres of nitrogen.
The resulting polymer can, as described in Example 3, be processed into shaped foam bodies which are flame-retardant and also resistant to aliphatic hydrocarbons, e.g. B. petrol engines are resistant.
Example 5 A solution of 20 parts of polystyrene, 80 parts of styrene, 6 parts of petroleum ether (pentane fraction), 4 parts of 2,3-di-bromopropoxyethyl-2 ', 3'-dibromopropyl ether, 2 parts of lauroyl peroxide is in a container filled. This is tightly closed and kept at 24 to 30 C for 8 weeks. During this time the content hardens to a solid block. The resulting polymer is ground and can then, as described in Example 3, be processed into flame-retardant porous bodies with a density of up to 0.02 to 0.04 g / cm3. EXAMPLE 6 65 parts of glyoxaltra- (2,3-dibromopropyl) acetal are mixed into 1000 parts of polystyrene on a mixing roll mill at 140.degree.
The mixture is crushed in a cross beater mill so that particles with a diameter of around 1 to 3 mm are produced. These particles are stored in a stirred kettle in a mixture of 5000 parts of water and 80 parts of petroleum ether with a boiling point of 45 to 50 C with rapid stirring at 30 to 40 C for 96 hours. The obtained plastic particles containing petroleum ether are briefly air-dried and expanded by heating with steam at 107 C and sintered in a perforated ver closable form, which is filled to about 10% with the expandable plastic. One cools down and receives a foam body with a specific weight of 0.1 which only burns in the external flame.
Example 7 A tightly sealable metal container is filled with the following mixture: 400 parts of styrene 2 parts of divinylbenzene 28 parts of hexane 32 parts of formaldehyde di (2,3-dibromopropyl) acetal 8 parts of benzoyl peroxide. The closed container is stored at 24 ° C. for 8 days and then at 35 ° C. for 20 days. A compact block is obtained, which is cut into plates 6 mm in height. The plates are stored in a steam autoclave at 110 C (1 atm. Steam) and cooled for 12 minutes. The result is a flame retardant foam body with a density of 0.045 g / cm3, which can be used in decoration technology. Example 8 A pressure vessel provided with a stirrer is filled with 20,000 parts of water and 7.5 parts of alkyl sulfonate.
7500 parts of a bead-like copolymer composed of 85% styrene and 15% acrylonitrile are added to the aqueous solution. The kettle is closed, 3 atmospheres of nitrogen are injected and the contents of the kettle are heated to 60 ° C. while stirring (150 revolutions per minute). Thereafter, a mixture of 550 parts of methanol, 450 parts of formaldehyde di (2,3-dibromopropyl) acetal and 500 parts of technically pure butane [bp (760 mm) -10 to -E-15 C] is continuously stirred pumped into the boiler at a speed of 60 parts per hour. Pumping in is finished after 25 hours.
The kettle is cooled, the pearly product is suction filtered and briefly dried at temperatures of up to 20 ° C. The product can be used to produce foam bodies that only burn in an external flame.
Example 9 The following are placed in a pressure vessel with a stirrer: 12,000 parts of water, 30 parts of a copolymer of 94% vinylpyrrolidone and 60% methyl acrylate and 6 parts of sodium pyrophosphate. The kettle is closed, the contents stirred for a short time, and 2 atm of nitrogen are pressed on. Then, with continued stirring, a solution of 600 parts of di (2,3-dibromopropyl) ether, 40 parts of lauroyl peroxide and 1000 parts of difluorodichloromethane in 10,000 parts of styrene is pressed into the kettle and the contents are polymerized at 80 ° C. for 30 hours . After cooling, a polymer is obtained in the form of beads of 0.5 to 3 mm diameter, which is centrifuged off.
Hardly inflammable foam bodies can be produced from the bead-shaped polymer.
