B. in Kesselkaskaden.

Process for the production of high molecular weight polyethylene glycol terephthalic acid ester According to all previously known processes, high molecular weight polyethylene glycol terephthalic acid ester is produced in principle in such a way that low molecular weight ethylene glycol terephthalic acid ester (precondensate), as it is, for.
B. is initially obtained in the transesterification of dimethyl terephthalate with ethylene glycol or in the reaction of ethylene glycol carbonate with terephthalic acid, in the presence of catalysts in a vacuum with stirring by heating to temperatures above 260 C with elimination of ethylene glycol to form high molecular weight products .
Although temperatures of up to approximately 300 C are mentioned in various patents as being suitable for the further condensation of the never dermolecular ethylene glycol terephthalic acid ester to form high molecular weight products (high condensation phase), they are in no case described as actually used. This is in accordance with the experience on which the previous state of the art is based, that when heating polyethylene glycol terephthalate which is to be highly condensed according to the previously practiced procedures above 285 to 29011 C, degradation processes reduce the quality of the polycondensate (e.g.
Color, degree of condensation) (W. Griehl Research and Textile Technology>, 4. [1954], 381). Typical of all previously known methods for converting low molecular weight ethylene glycol terephthalic acid ester into a high molecular weight condensation product are relatively long condensation times of usually more than 2 hours in the high condensation phase by heating the melt in vacuo to temperatures between 260 and approximately 29011 C. .
With the aid of the process according to the invention, high-molecular-weight condensation products of excellent quality can be produced from low-molecular-weight ethylene glycol terephthalates in much shorter condensation times and thus in a much more economical manner that is less detrimental to the quality of the condensation products.
The inventive method for the preparation of high molecular weight polyethylene glycol terephthalic acid ester from a prepared by reacting dimethyl terephthalate with ethylene glycol in the presence of catalysts, di (ethylene glycol) - terephthalate and low molecular weight polymers of the same ben containing precondensate is there by polycondensate with cleavage of ethylene glycol marked,
that the precondensate is subjected to polycondensation with stirring in the presence of catalysts in a vacuum, which is advantageously 20 mm Hg at the beginning and preferably rises to about 0.8 to 0.2 mm Hg, in such a way that its melt is subjected to layer thicknesses of over 1 cm and under 18 cm the temperature range from 240 to 290 C in no more than 20 minutes and the temperature range from 290a C up to the maximum temperature between 300 and 3200 C in no more than 12 minutes can pass through and the condensation breaks off at a viscosity number of over 0.06, expediently up to 0.11.
The duration of the final stage of the condensation (after reaching the maximum temperature) is generally not more than 20 minutes, mostly only 5 to 15 minutes. So you can usually cancel the condensation after you have kept the reaction mixture 6 to 10 minutes at the maximum temperature mentioned.
Below the viscosity number is the limit of the quotient
EMI0002.0001
to understand for the concentration zero, the concentration being expressed in this quotient in g / 100 ml.
The specific viscosity is measured in an Ostwald viscometer according to Staudinger (H. Staudinger: Kolloidchemie, 3rd edition [1950] page 210) at 25 C on a solution of the polymer in a mixture of 60 wt / o phenol and 40 wt. % 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane. It is already known from German Patent Nos. 901592 and 918778 that polyamides can be obtained from diamines and dicarboxylic acids,
that the polycondensation is carried out within thin layers, just as differently structured polycondensation products could be produced by allowing the polycondensation to run off within thin layers.
However, these known methods of condensation management in thin layers, whereby thin layers in technology are generally only understood to be those whose layer thicknesses are at most a few millimeters, usually even much less, as is known from the thin-film evaporation method, cannot be used to the further condensation of precondensates consisting of low molecular weight ethylene glycol terephthalates, since the resulting high molecular weight polycondensation product is characterized by a very unfavorable flow behavior.
The consequence of this unfavorable flow behavior of the high molecular weight product being formed is that it cannot flow quickly enough in a thin layer to prevent local overheating at higher temperatures. As has been found, however, it is possible to combine the need for sufficient flow capacity on the one hand with the requirement of rapid removability of the ethylene glycol released during the further condensation of precondensates in a technically exploitable manner, by no longer subjecting extremely thin layers to further condensation, but those with their layer thickness is more than 1 cm but less than 18 cm.
Surprisingly and by no means to be expected, it has now been shown that despite the necessary high temperature between 300 and 32011 C, the flowability of the material subjected to condensation can be controlled by adjusting the layer thicknesses so that sufficient flow resistance or possibility sufficient mixing with sufficiently rapid removability of the ethylene glycol released in the further condensation ge can be coupled.
A layer thickness of 18 cm should therefore not be exceeded in the present process so that the glycol released during the condensation can be removed from the melt as quickly as is essential for the feasibility of this high-temperature short-term condensation process .
Suitable catalysts for the high-temperature short-term process according to the invention are compounds of metals of the 1st to 5th main group and the 6th to 2nd intermediate group of the Periodic Table of the Elements (see Periodic Table of the Elements with Electron Arrangement, Georg Westermann Verlag, Braunschweig, 2nd edition, 1957), in which the Me tall is bound to oxygen, so the z.
B. in the form of oxides, hydroxides, alcoholates, phenates or in the form of their salts with organic acids, such as acetates, propionates, benzoates, terephthalates, phthalates, salicylates, naphthenates, for example.
Those compounds which are soluble in glycol or in polyethylene glycol terephthalic acid ester or in a mixture of these two compounds, such as zinc acetate, antimony acetate, manganese acetate, cobalt acetate, potassium antimonyl tartrate, have proven particularly suitable.
In this high-temperature short-term condensation process, catalyzing compounds of the elements of the groups mentioned can be used individually or in combination. In the latter case, several different catalysts can also be used in combination in such a way that one or more specific catalysts, such as. B. antimony oxide and zinc acetate, used in the initial stages of the polycondensation, the z. B.
were already present in the preparation of the diethyleneglycol terephthalate and low molecular weight polymers of the same ben containing precondensate by transesterification of the dimethyl ester of terephthalic acid with ethylene glycol, and then prior to the application of temperatures exceeding 260 C, in particular 290 C temperatures, other special catalysts, such as z. B. cadmium acetate, manganese acetate, cobalt acetate, brings into the condensation melt.
The concentration of the substances suitable as catalysts can vary. In general, concentrations of about 0.005 to 0.05, preferably 0.01 to about 0.03 percent by weight are particularly suitable.
Substances that protect the melt from discoloration during the condensation process, such as triaryl phosphites, for example triphenyl phosphite, can be added to the condensation material.
The described high temperature / short-term process according to the invention for the production of high molecular weight polyethylene glycol terephthalic acid ester is particularly suitable for the continuous production of these esters, eg. B. in boiler cascades.
Example 1 a) Production of a di (ethylene glycol) terephthalate and low molecular weight polymers of the same containing precondensate with a viscosity number of about 0.01 by a known process.
14.5 kg of dimethyl terephthalate, 11.60 kg of ethylene glycol, 2.90 g of zinc acetate and 2.90 g of antimony trioxide were provided with a stirrer, thermometer, gas inlet tube, distillation attachment and a rising condenser Autoclave made of an iron-chromium-nickel steel at 160 to 256 C in a gentle stream of nitrogen with stirring at under normal pressure (about 755 mm Hg) continuously from distilling methanol (560 ml)
and then distilling off 3 l of free glycol converted to a low molecular weight ethylene glycol terephthalate with a melting range of 117 to 174 C and a viscosity number of 0.012 (measured at 25 C in the phenol-tetrachloroethane mixture 60:40). 2.6 g of triphenyl phosphite, dissolved in 300 g of ethylene glycol, were stirred into the melt.
b) Further condensation of the precondensate. 1 kg of the catalyst-containing precondensate prepared according to a) was in an autoclave equipped with a stirrer, thermometer, manometer, exhaust steam nozzle and descending the condenser, evacuated to 8 mm cross silver from an iron-chromium-nickel-molybdenum steel in 10 minutes 'C, heated to 240 C in another 10 minutes and completely melted. The layer height of the melt in the autoclave was 4 cm.
Stirring was then started (55 revolutions per minute) and the vacuum was immediately improved to 0.7 mm mercury. The temperature was increased to 290 ° C. within 17 minutes and increased from 290 to 304 ° C. in a further 5 minutes. The temperature was then held at 304 ° C. for a further 10 minutes. During the increase in temperature, the height of the melt in the autoclave rose to 17 cm, due to the foaming caused by the escaping ethylene glycol. The melt was then cooled below 270 ° C. in a further 6 minutes. The melt was colorless; Freezing point 26 l C. Viscosity number 0.076.
Example 2 1 kg of the precondensate obtained according to Example 1 a) was melted as in Example 1 b) in 20 minutes at a pressure of 8 mm of mercury and brought to 236 ° C. The layer thickness of the melt obtained was 4 cm. The vacuum was then improved to 0.7 mm of mercury, the temperature of the melt was increased to 29011 ° C. in 18 minutes and to 309 ° C. in a further 12 minutes while stirring. The temperature was then held at 309 ° C. for a further 6 minutes and then rapidly cooled to below 270 ° C. During the heating, the layer height of the melt in the autoclave rose to 17 cm.
The melt obtained was colorless; Freezing point 270 ° C., the viscosity number was 0.069. Example 3 1 kg of the precondensate obtained according to Example 1 a) was heated in the autoclave described in Example 1 b) at a pressure of 10 mm mercury to 240 ° C. in 12 minutes and melted in the process. The layer thickness of the melt was 4 cm.
Then, with stirring (110 revolutions per minute), the temperature of the melt was increased to 290 ° C. within 8 minutes, then the pressure was immediately reduced to 0.5 mm of mercury, the stirring speed reduced to 55 revolutions per minute and the Tempera ture increased to 312 C and held at this temperature for 12 minutes. It was then cooled below 270 ° C. in 7 minutes. The layer thickness of the melt increased to 17 cm during the heating. The melt obtained was almost colorless. Freezing point 261 C, viscosity number 0.071.
