Apparatus for Making a Tube The present invention relates to an apparatus for continuously fabricating a tube from a helically wound web (of paper, fibrous cardboard, etc.) having marks spaced apart along its outer surface. . It aims to make it possible to rapidly manufacture helically wound tubes, so as to achieve higher production speeds, while reducing the quantity of waste.
At present, in the field of the manufacture of helically wound tubes devices are used which still leave something to be desired, in particular with regard to continuous operation, substantially without waste. For example, currently available machines are arranged to provide the conventional winding mandrel, the energy for winding preferably being provided by an endless belt which advances the web or material being wound. .
The raw material is arranged in a conventional manner externally with respect to a point located near the mandrel and comes into contact with the winding mandrel at a certain pre-determined angle of attack depending on the width of the web, as well as the degree of overlap. wanted in the end product of the individual tape. Downstream along the mandrel, cutting means are provided which are designed to operate periodically depending on how the finished tubes are arranged to be severed. In this regard, the cutting means can be provided either with a single severing instrument, or with a series or row of these instruments.
Conventionally, the cutting mechanism is normally energized by one of a number of programs or patterns, for example a mechanical target may be disposed at or near the location where the mandrel terminates. winding and the finished material can be arranged to strike the mechanical target. The impact with the finished material forces the mechanical target to move and thus actuate the control means actuating the instrument intended to cut the finished tubes. As devices of this type are normally imprecise in nature, errors occur during cutting and waste results.
This lack of precision obviously tends to cause the tubes to be severed at one or more points remote from the end part of an individual tube or at the junction point between two adjacent tubes of the continuous series of tubes along the mandrel. . Heretofore this difficulty has been overcome in part by fabricating the tubes with a discontinuous outer layer, thus providing a relatively larger cutting area between two adjacent tubes, or alternatively the tubes have been randomly cut into one. certain point along the body of one of the tubes in the series. Either mode of operation is uneconomical from the point of view of production speed and from the point of view of waste generation.
In the production of a continuous tube having a series of repeated patterns, each complete series of patterns representing a single tube, it is possible to provide remotely disposed photoelectric means or other condition sensitive apparatus for detecting a certain condition. previously determined point, etc. along each of the tubes in the series during shaping, without coming into actual physical contact with the casing during shaping.
However, in order to achieve automatic and rapid operation of such a device, it is normally preferable to resort to a cutting mechanism which cuts a group or series of tubes in one piece with a single cutout, without having to it is necessary to cut each individual tube as it leaves the take-up mandrel. Although such a cutting arrangement can be conceived by cutting the individual tubes into separate sets, it has been found more advantageous to cut the tubes into groups. The individual sectioning can be conveniently carried out by a separate operation.
Of course, such a program requires the use of a second sensing source in the apparatus in order to sense the substantial completion of a predetermined number of one-piece tubes from the winding mandrel. It can therefore be seen that two detection stations are necessary to correctly cut the tubes at the desired locations. In addition, due to continuous operation of the apparatus, it is preferable that the tension exerted on each of the individual tubes during shaping is regulated so as to always maintain a constant tension previously determined on the material during the entire winding operation.
Furthermore, it is essential that the winding speed of the mechanism is substantially constant and synchronized with the longitudinal speed of the transverse cutting mechanism.
The apparatus according to the present invention is characterized in that it comprises a winding station and a cutting station, the winding station comprising an axially extending mandrel, provided with a device for helically winding the material. strip-shaped in tubular form and a device for continuously moving the material wound axially along the mandrel, the cutting station comprising a cutting member and a control device cooperating with it, the cutting member being mounted along it 'a track and being arranged to move periodically in the axial direction along the latter at the same speed as the tube and to sever the tube at determined spaced points,
the control device comprising a target detector, a locating device and an actuator arranged to be energized to move the cutting member along the track, the target detector comprising a state responsive apparatus axially spaced from the mandrel and arranged to respond to the presence of the tube at a predetermined location axially along the mandrel, the locating device comprising a state-sensitive apparatus, axially spaced from the mandrel and arranged to respond to the presence of marks, in a predetermined location along the latter,
the actuator being energized upon the coincident response of the target detector.

The embodiment of the apparatus shown in the drawing, generally designated by 10, has a suitable support or table 11 for mounting the equipment. The tube winding apparatus is provided with a pair of stations, the first of which is a winding station generally designated 12, the other being a cutting station designated generally 13. these stations are arranged to cooperate with each other for the preparation of elongated sections comprising a predetermined whole number of coiled tubes. In this regard, the raw material is fed into the winding section of the tubes and the tubes are produced continuously along this part of the device.
Periodically, at certain spaced intervals of time, the cutting portion of the device operates to sever the continuously wound tube into a series of whole number segments of tubes, each segment being intended for subsequent and individual severing along prior locations. mentally determined. Of course the speeds of the two stations, the winding station 12 and the stripping station 13, are synchronized so that the segments can be correctly cut with an absolute minimum formation of waste during the process.
Referring now in particular to the winding station, reference will be made in particular to FIGS. 1 and 2 in which this part of the apparatus is shown in detail. The winding portion 12 includes a suitable power source 14 such as a squirrel cage induction motor with an adjustable speed eddy current magnetic coupling, etc. This power source is arranged to control, among other things, the winding belt network generally designated by 15. The latter comprises a pair of pulleys 16 and 17 housed in envelopes or boxes 16a and 17a, pulleys which are arranged to control the belt endless 18 along a previously determined control path.
The belt 18, as will be seen in particular in FIG. 2, passes over and around a winding mandrel 19 which is surrounded at this location by a substantially continuous strip of a strip or material wound helically around the latter. In this way, the belt 18 provides a continuous driving force for the various parts or segments of the continuously wound helical tubes. The tension exerted on the belt 18 can easily be adjusted or controlled by means of a threaded adjustment shaft (not shown) which is integral with an adjustment wheel 20.
The apparatus when in operation pulls the material from a series of raw material feed rollers located adjacent to the take-up mandrel 19, the raw material being supplied as rolls 21, 22 and 23. Each of the rollers is provided with an associated tensioning device, in order to be able to maintain a substantially constant tension on the material being advanced towards the winding man drin. This tension means can be arranged in either of a number of ways, for example the arrangement of the glue or adhesive application cylinders indicated at 28. The pulley holders 24- 24 which are associated with the pulley blocks 25 and 26 make it possible to connect a new roller without stopping the machine.
The feed rollers are naturally arranged in a desired pulley arrangement which, in addition to facilitating proper tensioning and winding of the material on the mandrel 19, further provides, if desired, suitable stations of application of glue, etc. For example, the glue application station generally designated at 28, is provided on the feed from the roller 21. The glue application station comprises a reservoir 29 as well as an applicator cylinder 30 which extends in the reserve of glue normally contained in the reservoir see 29. Appropriate studs, for example studs 31 and 32, are provided to correctly guide the feed material on the applicator drum or cylinder 30.
The glue application station, generally designated 34, for the roller 23 functions substantially the same as the glue application station 28. The feed material is naturally applied to the mandrel. so that the face to which the adhesive is applied is correctly oriented with respect to the remaining parts of the tube supply strip. Downstream of the glue application station 28, an adjustable oblique leading roller 35 is provided, the angle of approach or angle of attack at which the strip 21a strikes the winding mandrel 19 depending on the width of the material as well as the desired degree of overlap between successive turns of the final product. Of course, if an ordinary butt joint is preferred, the angle of attack can be properly determined.
These angles can be easily determined by specialists for any given case. The feed roll 22 is a roll providing the initial web or layer 22a of the finished tubular product. The tension can be provided, if desired, in the mounting shaft 22b on which the roller 22 is mounted. Appropriate layers of adhesive are provided between the inner layer 22a and the superimposed layer 21, so that this layer and the successive layers form a single composite whole. Roll 23 provides a continuous web of outer or end coating material 23a which is applied along the outer surface of layer 21a. A suitable bonding system is established between the outer layer 23a and the intermediate layer 21a, in order to be able to correctly manufacture the finished product.
If desired, parallel adhesive strips can be provided which overlap the butt joint of the core layer to facilitate opening of the tube. A tilting guide blade 36 is provided in the path of the strip 23a after it leaves the roll 23 and immediately before the time it is wound onto the surface of the partially formed casing. It is used to direct the material onto the mandrel at the correct angle. The finished product is therefore made uniform along its outer film coating.
In operation, the belt 18 frictionally drives the layers 21a and 22a directly, the rotation of these layers, in combination, providing a force to drive the cover film 23a and to bring it into contact with the previously formed material. Although the inner layer 22a can preferably be made from a lacquered foil, etc., any material which does not tarnish or oxidize when exposed to the surface of the film can be used. mandrel and which provides low frictional contact with the latter. The tape 21a, preferably the material of the body, is provided with a suitable layer of glue or wet adhesive, etc. to fix or glue it to the internal surface of the lacquered foil.
The outer label has appropriate indicia and is adhered to the surface of the fibrous cardboard interlayer. Suitable adhesive tapes are arranged along the inner surface of the outer layer 23a in order to secure or glue it to the remaining parts of the tubes. The outer label includes repeating designs for the series of tubes and also includes an appropriate reflective target for use in the detector or target portion of the cutting section of the apparatus. As regards the overlap, the initial strip of lacquered foil is overlapped for a tube blank which has a diameter of approximately 50 mm between 10 and 12.5 mm.
The material of the body is joined together end to end, naturally the joint does not coincide with the joint of the internal sheet of lacquered foil. The outer layer is arranged to come to overlap on itself over 6 mm, the degree of overlap being determined and adapted to the indices appearing on its outer surface. Referring now to the part of the cutout of the apparatus, reference is made in particular to FIGS. 3, 4 and 5 for a more detailed description.
Winding mandrel 19 continues into and through the cutout portion 13 of the apparatus and is supported by resiliently biased pivot knobs 19a-19a, the previously wound casing being arranged to travel the extent of the mandrel and be cut to size. appropriate intervals. The part of the cutting 13 is equipped with a saw blade 38 which is intended to rotate around a splined shaft 39. The shaft 39 which is provided with a track for the saw 38, is controlled by any suitable motor means. such as the motor 40, the rotational energy being transmitted to the shaft 39 by a belt 41.
The spline transmission (not shown) is of a conventional nature and is located in the housing or guard 42. The saw 38, the splined shaft 39 and the associated networks are mounted on arms 4 and 45 of an angled lever, these arms being fixed to a mounting shaft 46 and arranged for pivoting within the retaining elements 48 and 49. The latter are naturally fixed to the table 11 and are fixed with the latter. With the saw 38 and the mechanism described above is further associated a double section pneumatic cylinder 60 which is arranged to supply energy through the crank arm 61 to tilt the saw 38 around the saw. 'shaft 46, the saw thus being arranged to engage with a cross section of the wound product and to section it.
So that the saw can cut the tube in the transverse direction, that is to say perpendicular to its longitudinal axis, the splined shaft 39 is arranged to move longitudinally, by driving the saw 38, the speed of movement being exactly equal to the longitudinal component of the speed of the terminated helically wound tubular bodies. The double-acting hydraulic cylinder 55 propels the saw carriage longitudinally at a speed precisely equal to the longitudinal speed of the casing along the mandrel. The actual cut is made along the recessed portion 19c of the mandrel 19.
Therefore, in operation, the saw, while rotating around the splined shaft 39, is set in motion longitudinally at a speed equal to the speed of longitudinal movement of the helically wound tubes. After reaching speed, the saw is rotated about the shaft 46 to engage the longitudinally moving tubular body and sever it around its periphery, the saw then being returned to the normal position which is at the deviation from the course of the tubular body. When returning to the normal retracted position, the saw is returned to the starting position and is then ready for the next operating cycle.
We will now refer to FIGS. 11 and 12 which schematically represent the operation of the saw or cutting mechanism itself. With particular reference to Fig. 12, a pump 52 provides a source of constant hydraulic pressure along the line 53. A double-acting hydraulic cylinder 55 is provided with an operating shaft 56 which is arranged to be controlled, either inward or outward from the cylinder housing.
There is shown a pair of supply pipes 57 and 58 which act as pipes between the pump 52 and the cylinder 55, the pipe 57 being arranged to supply the energy to move the shaft out of the cylinder, the pipe 58 being arranged to provide the energy to drive the shaft inward. Solenoid valves 57a and 58a are provided in the individual lines which control the flow of fluid into the cylinder from the pressure sources. A suitable control circuit, which will be described later, controls and actuates the solenoid valves 57a and 58a.
The output volume of the motor-driven pump 52 is arranged so as to precisely synchronize the speed of the longitudinal displacement of the shaft or operating arm 56 with that of the tubing or wound tubular body. The valve network is arranged to continue the application of pressure in one direction or the other until the moment when a change in flow direction is indicated.
Referring now to fig. 13, the transverse cylinder 60 having an operating and crank arm 61 is provided to transmit the rotational energy to the saw blade itself. A pressure source 62, preferably containing l. Pressurized air is associated with the cylinder 60. A pair of limiting switches 63 and 64 is associated with the cutting saw carriage and arranged to control the pressure means 62 to actuate the cylinder 60.
Consequently, in operation, the saw body 38, after having been set in longitudinal motion by the cylinder 55, strikes the switch 63 for starting the pneumatic cylinder which releases a charge of compressed air from the pressure chamber 62 in the cylinder 60 and actuates the arm 61 to cause the saw to rotate around the shaft 46. Upon further transverse movement, the saw 38 switches to the transverse return limiter switch 64 and thereby actuates the switch and causes a second charge of compressed air to move through cylinder 60.
Whereas the cylinder is double-acting, the second load moves the arm 61 back into the cylinder body and thereby rotates or rotates the arm 61 in the cylinder body and thereby rotates or swivels the saw away from the body. finished tubular coil helically. A suitable current source is provided as shown in fig. 13 and transformer 65, if necessary, for the chosen equipment. The valve arrangement is such that pressure is maintained in one direction until a change in direction is indicated.
The control means which drives the various parts of the apparatus described above will now be explained together with its various functions. The control apparatus is provided with an individual target control part and an individual locator control part. In addition, position detector control means are provided in the operating circuit of the saw to promote correct operation of the equipment. Reference will now be made to the target control part, shown generally in Figs. 3 and 6 in 67.
The target drive is mounted on the threaded mounting shaft 68 which is arranged for longitudinal movement along spaced anchor shafts 69 and 70, the latter being permanently mounted on table 11 as shown. at 71. An adjusting wheel 73 is provided which, during its rotation, moves the registration control assembly 67 longitudinally to the apparatus and parallel to the winding mandrel at will. In this way, the target drive can be placed at any desired point along the longitudinal path of travel of the helically wound terminated tubes. The vertical console 74 supports a light source or other suitable radiant energy source coupled to an associated photocell, which are designated 76 and 76c respectively.
The target cell 76a may preferably be of the conventional photoresist type, such as lead sulfide, lead selenide, etc. and is therefore sensitive to changes in incident radiation. We realize that other means sensitive to a state can be used for this operation as long as the means are capable of remotely detecting the change of state. The path taken by the light source, which may preferably comprise a conventional lens arrangement, is an imaginary extension of the man drin 19.
Consequently, as the helically wound tube moves longitudinally, the light path from the source arranged inside the assembly 76 is interrupted and no longer impinges on the photocell of the assembly 76c. The corresponding signal coming from the photoelectric cell is amplified by an amplifier according to the diagram of FIG. 10. In this regard, an appropriate polarization potential is applied across the terminals of the photoelectric cell 76a, the potential being supplied by an appropriate source, as shown in FIG. 10.
Tube 76a, which is normally non-conductive, is conductive upon sensing ray energy from the associated light source. When it becomes non-conductive, the change in potential causes the thyratron, generally designated 76b, to be excited, supplying sufficient voltage across the coil of relay 77 to close both contacts 77a and 77b. Therefore, upon detection of a coiled tube in the area observed by the photocell 76, the mounting members act to restore the circuit to another operation on the next operation of the locating part of the device. device.
It will be noted that the contacts 77b cause the operation of the delayed action assembly which is shown in detail in FIG. 11. The role of the delay assembly is to provide positive operation of the jigsaw mechanism for a given period of time after actuation of relay contact 77b, the delay assembly actuating an independent relay contact which is arranged in electrically parallel relation with the relay contacts in the locating control part of the device.
It will also be noted that the closing of the contact 77b of the relay closes the contacts 78a and 78b of the relay 78, the contact 78b being arranged in the part for starting the saw of the circuit shown schematically in FIG. 8. This waste-saving arrangement positively forces the saw to cut whether the registration control subsequently operates correctly or not.
The locating control part of the apparatus is shown generally at 80 and in detail in Figs. 3 and 6. The apparatus includes a suitable retainer 81 which is provided with adjustment screws 82 and 83 for precise positioning of the combination of the photocell and the light source. The apparatus comprises an assembly of light source or other source of radiation and combined photosensitive cell designated at 84, the photoelectric cell part of which may be for example of the photoresistive type as mentioned above with respect to the target control mechanism.
The precise positioning of assembly 84 is determined with respect to the location of the target detection mechanism used and in particular with respect to the integer number of finished tubes desired in the severed sections. Once this location is established, fine adjustment of the position of cell 84 can be easily accomplished by empirical methods. The outer layer of helically wound tubes is provided with a suitable reflective surface or area which is in the path of the light source as the material moves on the mandrel.
The light strikes the reflective area or spot and the reflected beam is detected by the photoelectric cell.
Referring now to the registration control as shown in FIG. 9, a photocell 84a is provided which is normally substantially non-conductive, this cell naturally looking at the surface of the helically wound tubing. When a reflective spot appears on the path of the light source associated with the assembly 84, the reflected part of the light causes a modification in the form of an increase in the conductivity of the cell 84a, this modification the conductivity being directed towards the gate 85a of the double triode 85.
The double triode 85 is arranged so as to present a cathode load output, this output being directed towards an associated electronic bridge assembly and described below. It has been found that a photoelectric cell known by the designation IP39 or 925 operates satisfactorily in this circuit, as well as the double triode 7F7 having a cathode load output. This provides an amplification of the current in this part of the assembly. The signal obtained from this arrangement is directed to the gate 86a of the double triode 86, causing an imbalance of the output of the double triode 86, the unbalanced output being sufficient to energize the coil 87a of the relay 87.
Thus, the contacts 87b are closed, closing the circuit for starting the saw and initiating the flow of current through the coil 88 which begins to operate the hydraulic system driving the silk along the track of the carriage.
Referring now to fig. 8, it is realized that with manual switches 89 and 89a and with the closing of the snap-action switches that detect position 90 and 91 arranged in the home position of the saw, the assembly is prepared to energize the coil 88 as soon as the relays 77 controlled by the target and the locating control relay 87 are energized, thus closing the contacts 77a and 87a. The indicator lamp 88a is naturally on when the saw-starting coil 88 is energized. It will be noted that the locating relay is supplied with direct current via an appropriately filtered rectifier 97 as shown in FIG. 9.
Appropriate legs are provided, of course, to establish an appropriate heating current. It has been found that greater precision of the locating control network can be achieved when a rectified current source is connected to the differential bridge arrangement.
Referring now to fig. 11, there is shown a suitable delay circuit or network which is arranged to cause the saw to operate cyclically at a certain time after detection of the casing in the control area of the target operating mechanism. It will be remembered that the relay contacts 77b are closed when the target control relay 77 is energized. This in turn causes the relay 78 to be energized by closing the contacts 78a which effectively function as an input signal for the delay mechanism shown in FIG. 11.
After closing the contacts 78a, current flows through the delay circuit charging capacitor 92, the time constant of capacitor 92 being determined in part by the value of resistor 93. After reaching an appropriate potential across the terminals of the relay coil 94, the contacts 94a and 94b are closed, the contact 94b being arranged in parallel with the contact 87b of the locating control.
Thus, if the cue control mechanism does not operate properly, or misses the subsequent reflective spot required after the target control relay 77 is closed, the delay circuit operates to override it and turn on. . the saw for its cutting cycle at a predetermined instant after the detection of the material in the control zone of the target. A good control of waste by the mechanism is thus obtained, which makes its operation substantially safe. For its operation, a suitable source of direct current is made available to the delay apparatus through an arrangement of the diode 95 and the associated filter capacitor 95a.
A voltage divider network is arranged in the power supply using potentiometer 96 and resistor 96a. Therefore, after choosing the correct time interval for closing the contacts of relay 94, which is determined in part by the setting of potentiometer 96, it is possible to arrange the periodic cyclic operation of the delay circuit by a choice. correct setting of the potentiometer. It will further be noted that upon closing of the contacts 94a, the capacitor 92 is almost completely discharged through the resistor 93 and therefore the assembly is ready for another uniform cycle in time or cycle to. delay, after the contacts 78 of their relay have been closed again.
In the event that a new cycle of the saw is desired to occur with each occurrence of the tube in the target control area, switches 89 and 89a are closed, thereby bypassing cue control relay 87. .
We will refer to fi-. 8 for a more complete description of the circuit arrangement. The main current is supplied as shown and is rectified through rectifier 105. The cue control relay is shown at 87 and includes a delayed action relay contact 94b, arranged to operate in the event of a malfunction of the cue control. . The remaining parts of this circuit include the target control relay 77. The target control circuit includes a reset switch 91 in addition to the relay.
Further, at this time it is essential that the saw is in the starting position so that both the reset switch and the saw ON switch 90 are closed. In this case, the current flows through the coil 88 controlling the starting mechanism of the saw. This starts the saw on its longitudinal path at a speed which is coordinated or synchronized with the longitudinal speed of movement of the helically wound tubes. After the saw has traveled a certain portion of the path, the limit switch 114 is triggered causing current to flow through the saw's cross travel solenoid.
This actuates the angled lever and pulls the saw 38 to bring it into contact with the periphery of the tubular elements being moved and cuts a predetermined section of the casing from the coiled portion. After further longitudinal movement, switch 115 is closed, allowing current to flow through the saw transverse movement interrupt solenoid. This causes the elbow lever to return to the normal position by moving the saw away from the moving tubes.
The period of time during which the saw can remain in contact with the moving tubes is determined by the distance required for complete rotation of the helically wound elements. This of course can be easily determined by specialists depending on the requirements of any given operation. After further movement of the saw, the saw return switch designated 116 is closed, which provides current flow through the 117 coil while providing current flow to through the saw's return solenoid. The saw is then driven into the return position and held there under pressure until the start of the next cycle.
A constant thrust is applied to the mechanism of the hydraulic cylinder controlling the saw in the longitudinal direction, in order to maintain it in the starting position during the periods of time between the operating cycles. It will be appreciated that the limit switch 90 and the switch 91 are disposed along the track and that the normally open switches are always closed while the saw is in the start position.
When the saw leaves the home position, the switches are returned to their normally open position, preventing further successive cycles from occurring by causing pulses of current to pass through the saw's start solenoid. 'Other times than the desired times, since both control parties can again detect a simultaneous event before the instant the tube is cut and removed from sight of the target agency. A manual switch 116 is provided for manually operating the device when it is not desired to use the control circuit.
We will refer to FIG. 14 which shows the relative positions of the various switches with respect to the cutting device. It will be noted that the reclosing switch 100 and the switch 101 for starting the saw are arranged at one end of the longitudinal track supporting the saw. A short distance away is the return switch 63 for the transverse-operated pneumatic cylinder. "At the end of the stroke is the return switch 102 for the saw, closing this switch causing the saw to circulate. current through the saw return solenoid, thus returning the saw to the starting position.
The finished rolled product has been shown in more detail in FIG. 7 in which the lacquered sheet 22a is provided as a base layer, which is covered with a layer of foil for example. The cardboard layer corresponds to the material 21a and provides the core layer of the finished product. The outer label is shown at 23a and covers the other layers and forms the outer decorative cover and normally bears indications.
