So hängt z.

High-temperature-resistant alloy High-temperature-resistant and high-temperature oxidation-resistant machinable alloys have a wide range of uses in technology. It has generally been recognized that future developments in many areas will largely depend on the availability of new and better alloys with these properties. So e.g. B. the further development of engines and gas turbines depends on the availability of such alloys.
Furthermore, for the production of dies and the like for the machining of metals at high temperatures and the construction of chemical Re actuators, oil refiners and the like, better, high-temperature-resistant alloys are required. It has proven difficult to achieve a combination of machinability, high temperature strength and high temperature oxidation resistance in an alloy, and considerable effort has been made to find such metals.
It has now been found that machinable alloys, which have an unusually high oxidation resistance and strength at temperatures above half 800 ", are obtainable by adding niobium, titanium, molybdenum and chromium (and possibly certain additional elements) in the later specified are alloyed together in large quantities.
The present invention is accordingly aimed at improved machinable alloys which have an unusually high resistance to oxidation and strength at elevated temperatures. The alloys according to the invention are suitable as materials for high-temperature devices of all kinds.
The alloy compositions here are expressed in percent by weight. The high temperature resistant alloy according to the invention contains 8 to 20% molybdenum, 1 to 20% titanium,
1 to 16% chromium and at least 50% niobium.
In addition to these main components, the alloy can contain about 0 to 10% tantalum, about 0 to 10 0 / a vanadium, about 0 to 10% zirconium, about 0 to 5 0 / a aluminum,
about 0 to 5% cobalt, about 0 to 5% iron, about 0 to 5% manganese, about 0 to 5% nickel, about 0 to 5% tungsten,
contain about 0 to 2% beryllium, about 0 to 2% carbon, about 0 to 2% cerium and about 0 to 2% silicon,
where the total content of Ta, V and Zr is about 0 to 20% 0, the total content of Al, Co, Fe, Mn,
Ni and W is about 0 to 10% and the total content of Be, C, Ce and Si is about 0 to 5%.
According to a preferred embodiment, the alloys according to the invention are characterized by a content of about 5 to 15% titanium, 8 to 20% molybdenum,
about 5 to 10% chromium and about 55 to 75% niobium. The alloys according to this preferred embodiment can also contain Be, C, Ce, Co, Fe, Mn, Ni, Si, Ta, V, W, Zr and preferably Al, with or without Fe, in the amounts indicated above.
The tungsten is a preferred additional element in amounts up to 5%.
The alloys according to the invention can be produced by the usual methods of sinter metallurgy or by melting and casting. For example, weighed proportions of the individual metal components are melted together under an inert atmosphere, allowed to solidify and melted again until thorough mixing is achieved. The finished melt is then allowed to cool and solidify in the desired spatial shape. The casting obtained in this way is a machinable metal that is solid and resistant to oxidation at high temperatures and is suitable as a material for high-temperature equipment.
The melting treatment can be carried out in an electric arc melting furnace equipped with consumable or non-consumable electrodes, or by inductive heating of the charge. A suitable arc melting furnace has been described by W. Kroll in Transactions of the Electrochemical Society, Volume 78, pages 35 to 47, 1940.
This furnace is equipped with a one-piece, water-cooled copper crucible in which the batch can be melted and solidified. A steady-load furnace, such as the furnace described in U.S.P.B. Report No. 111083, can also be used. Regardless of the type of furnace used, care should be taken to protect the molten metal from normal atmospheric contamination from contact with oxygen, nitrogen, etc. For this purpose, the treatment can be carried out in a vacuum or in an inert gas atmosphere, such as under argon, helium, etc.
The individual metals can be given to the furnace in any form, such as a powder, granules, shot, wire or sponge. <I> Example 1 </I> The following alloys are produced in each case by placing the metal components that make up the finished alloy in the water-cooled copper crucible of an arc melting furnace of the above-mentioned von Kroll, a. a. O., type described and then heated under helium until the charge has melted. Then the furnace is switched off and the melt is allowed to cool in the helium atmosphere. To ensure thorough mixing, the alloy is then melted and solidified six more times in this way.
The casting that is finally obtained has the shape of the water-cooled copper crucible.
A coupon or strip of about 4.8> is made from the casting using a cutting wheel; <B> 11.1 </B> X 11.1 mm cut and then machined to size. This strip is heated in a stream of air (1000 cm "- / min) for 24 hours to 1000. The heating takes place in a recording thermobalance, which continuously records the weight of the sample on a moving sheet of paper in such a way that the Ge change in weight is plotted as a function of time.
The curve obtained makes it possible to determine the rate of oxidation at any given time in the heating treatment. The rate of oxidation obtained for the two samples at the 24 hour mark is given in the third column of Table I.
In the fourth column of Table I, the amount of weight of the metal is given in percent by weight, which was converted into oxides. This value is determined by removing the oxide scale from the sample after oxidation and weighing the remaining alloy. The difference between this weight and the weight before the oxidation is equal to the amount of metal converted into oxides. This difference in weight is converted into a percentage by dividing it by the weight of the unheated sample.
The oxidation values given in the fourth column of Table I show that malybdenum, together with the other alloying elements, improves the oxidation resistance of niobium. However, since unalloyed niobium is known to form a volatile oxide under conditions such as those used in the present test, the gases obtained from the heating zone are passed through a condenser to collect any volatile oxides that may form during the test th.
It can be seen from the values given in the fifth column of Table I that only one of the alloys described in the table forms any volatile oxide and this in extremely small quantities. This oxide was analytically determined to be molybdenum oxide, and on the basis of this identification one can calculate the percentage by weight of metal which is converted into volatile oxide.
The fact that the alloys according to the invention form little or no volatile oxides is significant, since experience has shown that the use of molybdenum in high-temperature alloys in the amounts according to the invention is limited by the accessibility of the molybdenum to the formation of volatile oxides can be.
It also determines the depth of the surface removal and the sub-scale thickness of the samples. These determinations are made by cutting through the samples after the oxidation test and then taking measurements on the cross-section. The depth of the ablation is equal to the amount by which the oxidizing atmosphere has penetrated the surface of the sample and converted the metal into scale. For reasons of convenience, the measurements are taken from one of the larger areas. The depth of the removal is essentially the same on these surfaces. Under the term is to be understood that part of the metal on which an influence from the atmosphere can be recognized, but which has not been completely oxidized to scale.
The values given for the edge evaluation in Table I are obtained by visually evaluating the extent to which the edges and corners of the sample have been rounded under the action of the oxidizing atmosphere. For many purposes of application of the alloys according to the invention, it is important that parts produced or cast by machining should keep relatively sharp edges and corners if they are subject to oxidizing conditions at high temperatures.
The use of rectangular machined specimens: makes it possible to assess the ability of the alloy to retain sharp edges and corners when exposed to severe oxidizing conditions.
The scale formation properties given in the last column of Table I were determined by examining a cross section of the sample by metallographic methods before the scale was removed. Such an examination can be used to determine the degree to which the interior of the alloy has been influenced by oxygen.

<I> Example 2 </I> This example shows the results obtained when heating for longer than 24 hours (as in example 1).
The tests of resistance to oxidation on which Table II is based were carried out in the same way as in Example 1 with the exception that the heating was carried out for 100 hours and the flow rate of the air was between 1000 and 2000 cm3 / min.

A casting (made from a batch containing 75% niobium, 10% titanium, 1010/0 molybdenum and 5% chromium as in Example 1) is homogenized by heating to 1400 for 64 hours in a vacuum oven.
The casting is first machined into a 12.7 mm round piece and then pressed to 10.72 mm at 1300, that is, subjected to an 18% reduction without severe cracking. Another casting made of the same alloy is homogenized as above and processed into an outlet nozzle for molten salts, such as MgCIZ, by pressing and machining.

<SEP> remainder <SEP> Nb As Tables I and II show, the control samples made of niobium show very poor behavior in comparison with the alloys according to the invention. Unalloyed niobium dissolves oxygen to a large extent at elevated temperatures.
When niobium is exposed to an oxygen-containing atmosphere, an oxide film forms, and at elevated temperatures, oxygen diffuses from this film into the metal and dissolves in it until the metal is saturated with oxygen, thereby destroying the ductility of the metal and the metal becomes unsuitable for practical use.
The reason for the unique properties of the alloys of the invention is not entirely clear; However, without the invention being in any way restricted to these explanations, it is assumed that they are due to the following two phenomena: In the alloy according to the invention, elements such as titanium are used which have a stronger affinity for oxygen than niobium exhibit. These elements combine with the oxygen and form a second phase in the die.
In this way, the harmful oxygen is used up by the attempt to penetrate the metal structure through the formation of stable compounds. As a result, oxygen diffusion is slowed down so that the oxygen concentration in the main body of the alloy remains at a low level.
The second phenomenon appears to result from the use of solid solution forming elements, such as molybdenum, which reduce the diffusion and solubility of oxygen in the alloy matrix. In. the alloys according to the invention thus occur two phenomena, which in their interaction reduce the amount of oxygen that would otherwise get into the main body of the metal and destroy its mechanical properties and slow down the penetration.
Although it is preferable to work with metals of relatively high purity, a certain degree of contamination of the alloy may be harmful.
The alloys according to the invention can be used for the production of any desired workpiece, for the production of which a solid, oxidation-resistant metal is required. They are particularly suitable for high-temperature facilities such as engines, turbines, chemical reactors and their accessories, oil refining systems and high-temperature sinks and the like.
It should be emphasized, however, that the use of the alloys according to the invention is not restricted to use at high temperatures or to any of the devices described here. In addition, these alloys have a high level of resistance to the effects of corrosive substances such as hot mineral acids and molten salts.
