Process for the production of new epoxidized acetals
The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of new epoxidized acetals of the formula
EMI1.1
where Rt, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, R7, Rg and Rg for hydrogen atoms or monovalent substituents, such as halogen atoms or aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon radicals, where Rl and R5 together also have a divalent substituent, such as a Methylene group, A represents the radical formed by separating off the two hydroxyl groups from a dialcohol containing an epoxycyclohexane ring, characterized in that
there are acetals of the formula
EMI1.2
wherein A 'represents the residue formed by separation of the two hydroxyl groups from a dialcohol containing a cyclohexene ring, treated with epoxidizing agents.
The new acetals of the formula (II) can be obtained by adding an aldehyde of the formula
EMI1.3
with a dialcohol containing a cyclohexene ring, preferably condensed in the presence of an acidic compound.
The aldehydes of the formula (III) are derivatives of tetrahydrobenzene. The following may be mentioned: z) 3-TetrahydrobenzaMehyd, 6-Methyl-A3-tetrahydrobenzaldehyde and
1, 5-endomethylene-Z13-tetrahydrobenzaldehyde.
As dialcohols which contain a cyclohexene ring, there may be mentioned: 1,1-bis (hydroxymethyl) cyclohexene (3), 1,1-bis (hydroxymethyl) 6-methylcyclohexene (3), 1,1-bis (hydroxymethyl) 2 , 4,6-trimethyl cyclohexene (3), 1,1-bis (hydroxymethyl) 2,5-endomethylene cyclohexene (3) and 1,1-bis (hydroxymethyl) 4-chloro-cyclohexene (3).
The acetals of the formula are particularly easily accessible
EMI2.1
where R8 and R 'stand for hydrogen atoms or lower alkyl radicals.
The acetals used as starting materials can be prepared by methods known per se by heating the aldehydes of the formula (III) together with the dialcohol in the presence of an acidic catalyst, such as. B. hydrochloric acid or p-toluenesulfonic acid. The inventive epoxidation of the C =C double bonds in the cyclohexene rings can be carried out by customary methods, e.g. B. with the help of peracetic acid or perbenzoic acid.
The diepoxide compounds of the formula are particularly easily accessible
EMI2.2
where R8 and R 'stand for hydrogen atoms or lower alkyl radicals. These epoxides are light-colored resins which are generally liquid at room temperature and which can be converted into clear and light-colored hardened products with suitable hardeners, such as dicarboxylic acid anhydrides.
The epoxidized acetals produced according to the invention react with the usual hardeners for epoxy compounds. By adding such hardeners, they can therefore be crosslinked or cured in the same way as other polyfunctional epoxy compounds or epoxy resins. Basic or, in particular, acidic compounds are suitable as such hardeners. Have proven to be suitable: amines or amides, such as aliphatic and aromatic primary, secondary and tertiary amines, eg. B.
Mono-, di- and tributylamines, p-phenylenediamine, ethylenediamine, N, N-diethylethylenediamine, diethylenetriamine, triethylenetetramine, tetraethylenepentamine,
Trimethylamine, diethylamine, triethanolamine,
Mannich bases, piperidine, piperazine, guanidine and guanidine derivatives such as
Phenyldiguanidine, diphenylguanidine,
Dicyandiamide,
Aniline-formaldehyde resins,
Urea-formaldehyde resins, melamine-formaldehyde resins, polymers of aminostyrenes, polyamides, e.g. B. those made from aliphatic polyamines and di- or trimerized, unsaturated fatty acids, isocyanates, isothiocyanates; polyhydric phenols, e.g. B.
Resorcinol, hydroquinone, quinone, phenolaldehyde resins, oil-modified phenolaldehyde resins, reaction products of aluminum alcoholates or phenolates with tautomeric compounds of the acetoacetic ester type, Friedel-Crafts catalysts, e.g. B.
AIC13, SbC15, SnCI4, FeCIz, ZnCI2, BFs and their complexes with organic compounds; Phosphoric acid. Preference is given to using polybasic carboxylic acids and their anhydrides as hardeners, e.g. B.
Phthalic anhydride, methylendomethylenetetrahydrophthalic anhydride, dodecenyl succinic anhydride,
Hexahydrophthalic anhydride, hexachloroendomethylene tetrahydrophthalic anhydride or
Endomethylenetetrahydrophthalic anhydride or mixtures thereof; Maleic or succinic anhydride, optionally also using accelerators, such as tertiary amines. The term <chardening)> as used herein means the conversion of the above epoxy compounds to insoluble and infusible resins.
The curable epoxy compounds or their mixtures with hardeners can be mixed with fillers, plasticizers, coloring substances etc. in any phase prior to hardening. For example, glass fibers, mica, quartz powder, cellulose, kaolin, finely divided silica (Aerosil) or metal powder can be used as the stretching and filling material.
The mixtures of the epoxy compounds according to the invention and hardeners can be used in the unfilled or filled state and in the form of solutions or emulsions as textile auxiliaries, laminating resins, paints, varnishes, dipping resins, casting resins, spreading, filling and leveling compounds, adhesives and the like, and for the production of such agents serve.
In the following examples, parts are parts by weight, percentages are percentages by weight, and the temperatures are given in degrees Celsius.
Example 1
Acetal from J3-tetrahydrobenzaldehyde and 1,1-bis (hydroxymethyl) cyclohexene-3
422 parts of z3-tetrahydrobenzaldehyde, 506 parts of 1, 1-bis (hydroxymethyl) cyclohexene-3, 5 parts of p-toluenesulphonic acid and 2000 parts by volume of benzene are in a circulation distillation apparatus (cf. the article by H. Batzer and coworkers in Makromolekulare Chemin 7, [ 1951], lines 84-85) until the water separation ceases.
After adding 5 parts of piperidine, the mixture is filtered and the solvent is evaporated. The residue yields 774 parts of the spirocyclic acetal on distillation at about 120.10.2 mm Hg. The product crystallizes on standing. Crystallization from methanol gives a preparation with a melting point of 55-56.

Epoxy.
1174 parts of the acetal described above are dissolved in 3000 parts by volume of benzene, and 100 parts of sodium acetate are added. Over a period of 1 1/2 hours, 2200 parts of 42% peracetic acid are added in portions with stirring. The temperature is kept at about 30 by cooling. After the mixture has reacted for a further 2 hours at 30 ° with constant stirring, it is cooled to 0. The titration shows the consumption of the theoretical amount of peracetic acid.
The benzene solution is washed three times with 1000 parts by volume of water and 1000 parts by volume of 2N soda solution (the pH of the aqueous solution should be about 10 after the extraction).
The combined aqueous solutions are extracted with 1500 parts by volume of benzene. The combined benzene solutions are dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and evaporated in vacuo.
The last residues of solvent are removed at 100 in a high vacuum. 1067 parts of a water-clear, viscous resin with an epoxy content of 6.0 epoxy equivalents / kg are obtained.
To determine the epoxide content, about 1 g of epoxide is dissolved in 30 ml of glacial acetic acid and titrated with 0.5N hydrogen bromide in glacial acetic acid in the presence of crystal violet until the color of the indicator turns blue-green. A consumption of 2 cm3 of 0.5N HBr solution corresponds to 1 epoxy equivalent lkg.
Example 2
Acetal from 6-methyl-z13-tetrahydrobenzaldehyde and 1,1-bis (hydroxymethyl) 6-methyl-cyclohexene-3
405 parts of 6-methyl-A3-tetrahydrobenzaldehyde, 468 parts of 1,1-bis (hydroxymethyl) 6-methyl-cyclohexene-3.1 parts of p-toluenesulfonic acid and 1000 parts by volume of benzene are boiled in a circulating distillation apparatus until the water has stopped separating out.
The solution is mixed with 1 part of finely powdered, anhydrous sodium acetate, filtered and evaporated. The residue gives 748 parts of the condensation product on distillation at 118, 110, 3 mm Hg.

473 parts of the acetal described above are dissolved in 3000 parts by volume of benzene. 30 parts of anhydrous sodium acetate are added and 850 parts of 42% peracetic acid are added in portions over the course of one hour with stirring. The temperature is kept at 300 by external cooling. The mixture is stirred for a further 4 hours and kept at 30 by occasional cooling. It is then left to stand at 0 for 14 hours. The titration shows the consumption of the theoretical amount of peracetic acid.
The lower, aqueous layer is separated.
With cooling, 880 parts by volume of conc. Let sodium hydroxide flow. The precipitated sodium acetate is filtered off and the aqueous parts are extracted with benzene. The combined benzene solutions are evaporated. 487 parts of resin with an epoxy content of 5.2 epoxy equivalents / kg are obtained.
The epoxy can be distilled at about 168 10.07 mm Hg.
