Hydrocarbon-based fuels The invention relates to compositions of hydrocarbon fuels having a high octane number.
Recent increases in compression rates in automobile engines have required significant efforts from petroleum refineries to produce fuels with the necessary octane rating for these engines. Premium fuels currently in use have octane ratings between 97 and 100 and it is anticipated that within five years premium fuels will have to have octane ratings included. between 105 and 110 to meet the octane requirements of automotive engines with high compression ratios considered for use at this date.
In order to manufacture premium quality fuels with octane numbers of 97 and above, it has been necessary for refiners to rely heavily on catalytic refining operations, such as fluid catalytic cracking, catalytic rectification, etc. a catalytic alkylation and isomation.
Catalytic cracking and catalytic rectification, which are the most commonly used refining operations for the production of fuels with a high octane number, produce significant amounts of aromatics while catalytic cracking also provides significant amounts. olefins.
It is well known that olefins and aromatics, despite their high octane numbers, respond more weakly to organic lead compounds, such as tetraethylated lead, than the saturated aliphatic constituents of gasoline. Therefore, when the aromatics and olefins content of gasolines has increased to meet the octane values required for modern automobile engines at high compression rates, the response to lead compounds in gasoline. fuels obtained decreased. In other words, the increase in octane number obtained by the addition of an organic lead compound decreases as the aromatics and olefins content of the basic fuel increases.
The invention is based on the discovery that the octane number of engine fuels treated with lead and having a substantial content of high octane components formed from aromatics and / or olefins can be appreciably increased by the addition of amounts of certain products which improve the octane number and described below.
The fuel according to the invention is characterized in that it contains at least 0.1% by volume of one or more agents for improving the octane number and having the formulas RI (X) ,, (Ri), , COOR. LRl (X) n (R2) .Cal, 'O or R'CH0 in which Rl is hydrogen or a monovalent hydrocarbon radical containing from 1 to 29 carbon atoms,
R2 is a divalent hydrocarbon radical containing 1 to 18 carbon atoms, R is hydrogen or a tertiary aliphatic hydrocarbon radical containing 4 to 8 carbon atoms, X is - O - or
EMI0001.0024
n and m represent 0 or 1 provided that, when m is equal to 0, n is also 0 and, when n is equal to 1, Ri is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical as defined above, the total of the carbon atoms in the radicals RI, R2 and X amounting to maximum to 29.
Effective products which improve the oc tane number, as an example of the above formulas, are monocarboxylic acids containing from 2 to 30 carbon atoms and their anhydrides, keto monocarboxylic acids, ether monocarboxylic acids, t- monocarboxylic acid alkylates as well as aldehydes containing from 1 to 30 carbon atoms.
The t-alkylates decompose in situ during engine operation into olefins and monocarboxylic acids, the latter being the effective octane improving agents. The aldehydes oxidize in situ during engine operation to form the monocarboxylic acids.
The index improving agent can be added so as to form a synergistic combination with at least 0.1% by volume of one or more arylamines having the formula :
R3NHR4 in which R3 is a monocyclic or bicyclic aryl radical containing 6 to 16 carbon atoms, while R4 is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon radical containing 1 to 12 carbon atoms.
These primary and secondary arylamines have been found to react synergistically with octane improving agents according to the general formulas given above to improve the index of gasolines treated with lead and having the above aromatic content. and / or olefins.
The effect of the agents, improving the octane number with a view to increasing the octane number of gasoline, is characterized by several peculiarities. In the first place, these agents appear to be ineffective in increasing the octane number of gasolines unless an anti-knock compound, formed by an organic lead compound, usually tetraethylated lead, is part of the gasoline mixture. .
The second characteristic of the effect of octane improvers in increasing the octane number of gasolines is that equal concentrations of the additive materials appear to produce a greater improvement in value. octane greater than 100 than octane value less than 100.
For example, an improvement in the octane number of 3.9 units, during a laboratory test, was obtained with a content of 0.5% by weight of 2-ethyl-hexanoic acid for a basic fuel with an octane number of 105, while only an improvement of 2.3 units is obtained with the same content of 2-ethyl-hexanoic acid for a basic fuel with an octane number of 96, 6.
The third peculiarity of the effect of the octane number improvers is that they do not appear to have, in substance, an effect on the octane number of a gasoline consisting essentially of saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons, even if an anti-knock agent, formed by an organic lead compound, is present.
Since these agents produce the greatest improvement in octane number in fundamental hydrocarbon gasolines saturated predominantly with paraffinic hydrocarbons, and since they have the lowest effect on the octane number of Essences rich in aromatics and olefins, the products are advantageously used in addition with tetraethylated lead to improve the octane number.
Monocarboxylic acids and their derivatives, according to the above formulas, have a minimum effect when tetraethylated lead exerts its maximum effect and their effect is maximum on the octane numbers when tetraethylated lead has its minimum effect.
The novel fuel compositions according to the invention must have a minimum content of at least 10% by volume of aromatic and / or olefinic constituents. The aromatic and / or olefin content of an engine fuel according to the invention,
can reach up to 100% by volume but is generally between 20 and 80% by volume.
It is believed that a minimum content of 10% by volume is necessary for the agents to produce a significant improvement in octane number.
The aromatic constituents of engine fuel, according to the invention, are generally obtained by catalytic rectification or catalytic cracking operations.
The catalyzed rectified product has a particularly high aromatic content. The olefinic constituents of motor fuel according to the invention are formed by thermal cracking, by catalytic cracking or by polymerization.
The organic lead reagent necessary for the octane improving agents to produce their effect is usually a tetraalkyl lead compound from the class of products known to have an anti-knockout effect. Tetraethylated lead is in practice universally used as an anti-knock agent, but other tetraalkylated lead compounds, such as tetramethylated, tetrabutylated, tetraamylated, tetra-propylated, etc., lead.
are known to have anti-knock properties and can be used for fuel compositions according to the invention, together with monocarboxylic acids and their derivatives.
The commercially available tetraethylated lead mixtures suitable for automotive engine fuels contain an ethylene chloride-ethylene bromide mixture as a scavenging agent to remove lead from the chamber. combustion in the form of volatile lead halides.
Fluid tetraethylated lead, used hereinafter in the examples illustrating the invention, is a commercial product which contains tetraethylated lead, ethylene chloride and ethylene bromide, the latter two reagents being present in quantities. corresponding to 1.0 and 0.5 respectively to theoretical values which are those of the quantity stoichiometrically necessary to react with the lead content of tetraethylated lead.
The organic lead reagent is present in the fuel compositions according to the invention, generally with contents of 0.5 ml per 3.75 liters up to the limit set for the concentration of this reagent which is currently 3 ml per 3.75 liters for automotive fuel and 4.6 ml per 3.75 liters for aviation fuel. The usual concentration of tetraethylated lead is between 1 and 3 ml per 3.75 liters for an automotive gasoline and between 2 and 4.6 ml per 3.75 liters for an aviation gasoline.
Apparently, the effect produced by octane improving agents depends on the carboxylic acid radical, --COOH since aliphatic monocarboxylic acids, aryl monocarboxylic acids, cycloaliphatic monocarboxylic acids and compounds which are converted in situ to these acids during engine operation, such as monocarboxylic acid t-alkylates, as well as aldehydes,
are effective in increasing the octane number of fuels treated with lead and having the prescribed content of aromatics and / or olefins.
Examples of effective monocarboxylic acids are: formic, acetic, propionic, caproic, 2-ethylhexanoic, capric, lauric, stearic, behenic, cumic, benzoic, cinnamic, cyclohexane carboxylic, phenylacetic acid and their anhydrides. .
Examples of ether and keto monocarboxylic acids are as follows: methoxyacetic acid, ethoxyacetic, phenoxyacetic, 3-ethoxypropionic, o-ethoxybenzoic, levulinic, 4-keto-stearic, 3-oxo-n-hexanoic and 3- phenyl-3-oxo propanoic acid.
Monocarboxylic acid t-alkylates are particularly preferred products for improving the octane number for industrial use because they are prepared from materials which can be easily obtained, in particular from olefins and aci monocarboxylics and they are, in substance, non-corosive. Examples of effective t-alkylates are:
t-butyl acetate, t-butyl formate, t-amyl propionate, t-amyl caproate, t-butyl lau- rate, t-amylcyclohexane carboxylate, t-octyl cinnamate and t-butyl benzoate.
The preferred t-alkylates are derived from aliphatic and aromatic monocarboxylic acids containing from 1 to 14 carbon atoms and from a t-aliphatic hydrocarbyl radical containing from 4 to 12 carbon atoms.
Examples of effective aldehydes are the following: benzylaldehyde, n-butyraldehyde, isobutyraldehyde, propionaldehyde, acid aldehyde paraldehyde which is a trimer of acid aldehyde, lauraldehyde and tolualdehyde. The octane number improvers, used in the fuel according to the invention, must be present in the compositions containing aromatics and / or olefins and treated with lead,
with a minimum concentration of 0.1% by volume so that a significant improvement in the octane number is obtained.
When the concentration of these agents is less than about 0.1% by volume, no improvement in the octane number of gasolines treated with lead and having the composition specified above is obtained.
The preferred concentration for these agents is between 0.2 and 1.5% by volume, the maximum improvement in the octane number being generally obtained with a content between approximately 0.5 and 1,
0% by volume.
With most of these agents there is a decrease in the improvement of the octane number when the concentration is above about 1.5% by volume. Concentrations of these agents as high as 5,
0% by volume can be used, but in this case there is not only a slight decrease in the improvement of the octane number with these high concentrations, but economic considerations precluding the use of these concentrations.
Examples of arylamines, which form synergistic anti-knock additives with tertiary alkylates of monocarboxylic acids are: aniline, N-methyl aniline, N-ethyl aniline, N-isopropyl aniline, Nt-butyl aniline, Nn- butyl aniline, p-toluidine, o-toluidine, m-toluidine, N-methyl o-toluidine,
N-ethyl o-toluidine, N-t-butyl p-toluidine, diphenylamine, a-naphthylaminL, di (o-methyl-phenyl) amine.
The arylamines are used in a minimum concentration of 0.1% by volume before a significant synergistic improvement in the octane number is obtained.
The preferred concentration of arylamine used as a synergistic anti-knock additive is between 0.2 and 1,
0% by volume. While an arylamine concentration as high as 5% by volume can be used, in synergy with tertiary alkylates, economic considerations preclude the use of these concentrations in industrial fuel compositions.
In practice, the upper concentration limit of arylamine corresponds to about 2.0% by volume. Table I below shows the effect of the octane number improvers for increasing the octane number of a fuel treated with lead and having a high aromatics content.
The initial gasoline, to which the various compounds are added with the indicated concentration, is naphtha rectified catalytically and containing 3 cm3 of fluid TEL per 3.75 liters having an initial boiling point of 54o and a final boiling point of 257.1. The initial gasoline treated with lead has an octane number, determined by analysis, of 96.6,
an aromatics concentration of 48% by volume measured by the analytical method with fluorescent indicator.

<SEP> 98.1 The figures given in the table above show the effectiveness of the concentration indicated for the agent improving the octane number by adding the latter in gasoline treated with lead and having the prescribed aromatic content.
Monocarboxylic hydrocarbon acids, keto acids, ether acids, t-alkylates and aldehydes are all found to substantially improve the octane number of catalytically rectified naphtha. The figures given in Table I also show the necessity of using a concentration of at least 0,
1% by volume of the octane number of the fuel treated with lead and containing aromatics to obtain a measurable appreciation.
The addition of 0.05% by volume of 2-ethylhexanoic acid, one of the most effective acids, does not provide a measurable improvement in octane number, whereas an improvement of about 2 units when a concentration of about 0,
1% by volume of this acid is provided for fuel treated with lead.
Table II below shows the effect of octane improving agents to increase the octane number of a gasoline treated with lead and having an octane number of 100, determined by analysis. The basic fuel used for Table II is a mixture comprising approximately 5% bu- cane,
38% of light naphtha having undergone a cracking with a catalyst in the fluid state and 57% of catalytically rectified naphtha. This fuel contains 3 cm @ of TEL fluid per 3.75 liters and has an aromatics content of approximately 24% by volume,
measured by the analytical method with a fluorescent indicator. The basic fuel with an octane number of 100, has an initial boiling point of 36.7o and a final boiling point of 184.

<SEP> 107.2 <SEP> 107.9 The improvements in the octane number of the basic fuel to the octane number 105, obtained by the addition of agents improving the oc tane number, are particularly important. It is above all interesting that a greater improvement in the octane number is obtained, with fuel rather than with the basic fuels having lower octane numbers referred to respectively in Tables I and II with equivalent concentrations of these agents.
Table IV shows the need for the presence of an anti-knock agent formed by an organic lead compound in a fuel containing aromatics and / or olefins to enhance the effect of the index improvers. octane. The basic fuel A used for Table IV is catalytically rectified naphtha, used for Table I.
The basic fuel B used for Table IV comprises 40% isobutane-isobutylene alkylate,
20% of a propylene polymer and 40% of a heavy product collected on the trays of a distillation column.

The Aromatic Essence blend has a boiling point range between 109 and 1920 and contains 84% aromatics,
15% saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons and 10% olefinic hydrocarbons. The Olefinic Gasoline A mixture consists essentially of a mixture of propylene dimers and trimers having a boiling point range of between 39 and 166 °.
The olefinic essence B blend comprises 50% iso-octene and 50% isoheptene. The isoparaffinic essence mixture contains 10% isopentane,

The increase in the octane number from 3 to 5 units, obtained with the synergistic additive mixtures, are particularly remarkable.
