ID="0002.0104"> wählt werden.

Process for treating molten metal The invention relates to a process; for the treatment of metal melts with gas-emitting substances.
It is known to introduce a treatment substance in the form of tablets or briquettes into the metal during the treatment of liquid metals in the foundry, which are such that they develop a gas in the melt which results in the desired treatment of the metal.
It is also known that molten metals tend to trap gases and / or dissolve undesirable gases. Molten aluminum and: its alloys can trap or dissolve hydrogen. During solidification, the entrapped or dissolved gases then tend to form small voids in the solidified metal, whereby the physical properties of the metal are undesirably affected.
It is therefore important to subject the molten metal to a so-called degassing treatment; A common treatment method of this type is to add a substance to the melt which develops a gas in the melt which then carries with it the enclosed or dissolved gases as it passes through the metal.
Typical of this treatment is the use of hexachloroethane, which is converted into a gas at the temperatures of metal melts; which has this rousing effect. _ Gas-generating substances can also be used to remove unwanted metals from molten metal mixtures. Magnesium can be removed from aluminum with the help of chlorine, which is generated by introducing hexachloroethane into the melt.
Similarly, aluminum can be removed from copper-based alloys such as brass or bronze with the aid of oxygen gas introduced in the form of a tablet of mixtures of oxidizing substances.
In certain cases it is desirable to introduce gas into liquid metals that are used in injection molding in order to counteract shrinkage and heat cracking.
Hydrogen, which is used for this purpose, is usually: in the form of water vapor with the help of briquettes. or tablets made from un harmful chemical salts containing large amounts of water of crystallization, e.g. B. Borax.
It has now been found that the effectiveness of such a treatment can be significantly increased if care is taken that the ZD gas is not generated in the form of relatively few large bubbles but in the form of many small bubbles.
The method according to the invention is characterized in that. that briquettes are added to the melt, which on the one hand contain a gas-releasing substance and on the other hand are composed in such a way that they form a solid porous body in the melt when the gas is released
In this way, the evolved gas can get into the melt in the form of small bubbles. Small bubbles rise. slower than large bubbles in the molten metal and therefore enable a more effective treatment because they remain in contact with the melt for a longer period of time and can result in a larger total area of contact with the melt.
If the specific gravity of the inert filler is so high that the specific gravity of the briquette is greater than the specific gravity of the metal melt, z. B. larger by 0.2 or 0.3, the briquette sinks into the melt by itself. Such suitable substances are z. B: zirconium silicate and barium sulfate.
If, on the other hand, the specific weight is not so high that the briquette sinks in the melt (self-sinking), it must be dipped below the surface of the melt.
If the briquette does not need to be self-sinking, a lighter material, such as ground chamotte, which is very cheap, can be used as a filler. But it can also use other fillers, such. B. sand, sillimanite, magnesite and sodium chloride. The weight fraction of the filler can vary within wide limits and form a substantial part of the total mass, e.g.
B. up to 90% by weight, usually 30 to 80% by weight. A mixture of 40 to 60% ground chamotte,
a small amount of a sintering salt and the remainder of hexachloroethane is a very effective and yet relatively much cheaper degassing material than hexachloroethane alone.
In general, it is desirable to use a filler with low thermal conductivity, because it takes longer in this case for the briquette to disintegrate as the heat flow decreases. the middle of the briquette is delayed. Fire-resistant or heat-insulating fillers are therefore advantageous.
Additives can also be added to the briquette, e.g. B. grain-refining substances acting on dis solidifying melt, such as potassium boron euoride.
Briquettes containing fire-resistant substances sometimes tend to disintegrate during the development of gas and, depending on their specific weight, either sink as sludge to the bottom of the melt or remain in suspension in the metal melt, or together with the slag on the bath surface to rise. If. this can remain without effect on the metal, but inclusions can form in the cast metal.
This can be avoided by using a briquette which, in addition to the degassing agent or another treatment substance and the fire-resistant substance, also contains two or more salts or compounds of different melting points, one of which has a lower melting point. point as the molten metal-own and together with the others,
Form a compound with a higher melting point than the molten metal at the temperature of the liquid metal.
If such salts or compounds are used, one of which can act as a filler itself, the briquette becomes self-sintering and itself forms a solid body at the bottom of the molten metal, which reduces the tendency to form inclusions in the molten metal. Such tablets contain z. B.
Sodium or potassium borofluoride or a mixture thereof as a component with a lower melting point and sodium fluoride as a higher melting component. Borax can also be used as a constituent with the lower melting point and calcium fluoride or other salt powder or fire-resistant substances as a higher-melting constituent
ID = "0002.0104"> must be selected.
In addition to a treatment substance that is completely gasified, and a fire-resistant substance, the briquette can also contain a salt with a low melting point, which decomposes at the temperature of the metal melt with evolution of gas and leaves a residue whose melting point is higher than that of the metal, z.
B. sodium silicofluoride, which splits silicon tetrafluoride gas and leaves sodium fluori'd as residue, which is high-melting and solid at the temperature of the molten aluminum or magnesium or their alloys.
By appropriate dosing and pressing, the briquette can be designed so that it rises to the surface after the treatment of the melt, that is, after the treatment agent, e.g. B. chlorine, is released, the body is lighter than the metal in which it has been introduced, so that it rises to the surface. Such a solid body can consist of hexachloroethane mixed with a fire-resistant substance.
If the mass does not have a specific weight higher than the melt into which it is to be introduced, it must be immersed under the surface of the bath. This can be done particularly advantageously in such a way that the mass is shaped into a flat cylinder with a central opening.
By means of this opening, the mass can then be screwed onto a rod, stops being provided so that it does not climb up the rod when it is immersed in the molten metal. If necessary, the rod can also have a cylindrical spiral winding at one end into which the briquettes can be inserted. Broad distances are expediently provided between the turns of the spiral. The treatment of metal melts according to the inventive method gives great advantages.
As a result of the dilution of the treatment substance in connection with an increased effect, a significant economic gain is achieved. At the same time, the amount of vapors and slags evolved is reduced, which is also essential.
The inventive method can be used for various treatments of molten metal a ver, for. B. for degassing melts made of aluminum, magnesium, copper or alloy conditions of these metals.
Hexachloroethane is a suitable degassing agent for low-melting alloys; but also other substances, e.g. B. organic bromine and iodine compounds such as tetrabromoethylene and polytetrafluoroethylene can also be used, and in general any solid, fully halogenated hydrocarbon is suitable.
With each of these halogenated hydrocarbons, im. Briquette an oxidizing agent to be mixed with the carbon formed during the decomposition of such halogenated hydrocarbons in reac tion. Suitable oxidizing agents are chlorates, perchlorates and nitrates of the alkali and alkaline earth metals.
Instead of chlorine-evolving substances, the briquettes can contain substances that can release other gases, e.g. B. oxygen, steam and hydrogen develop ent.
The examples given below, in which the individual amounts are given in percent by weight, are intended to serve to further explain the subject matter of the invention.
