Brazing mixture The present invention relates to a brazing mixture which is particularly suitable for soldering at high temperatures and which largely avoids erosion and the loosening of the parts to be joined near the joint when connecting thin metal plates, as well as the production of a non-brittle solder joint - Dung permitted.
In the manufacture of Flugzeugantrsebsmaschi nen, the fastening devices for these Masahir- nen and of aircraft frames so that weight can be saved if possible. A weight reduction without impairing the strength can be achieved, for example, in that the relevant parts are made of two parallel opposing metal sheets, the intermediate space being reinforced by, for example, honeycomb-like arranged transverse walls. The carrier thus contains a number of areas not filled with material. A method for connecting the metal strips in such a cell or honeycomb structure is that the metal strips or
Turn transverse walls, at least at some points of the common contact, hard soldered together. Since these bodies are exposed to elevated temperatures in high-speed aircraft, all brazing processes for connecting the individual parts must be carried out with alloys that only flow at high temperatures.
The recently used nickel-based soldering alloys made it possible for the first time to solder machine parts together well at very high temperatures. Before such alloys were available, the highest operating temperature for parts soldered together was around 427 C. This limit was given by the insufficient temperature resistance and oxidation resistance of the silver and copper-based alloys. The very good properties of nickel brazing alloys at high temperatures meant that airplanes could break through the thermal barrier for the first time. Nickel-based soldered connections are durable up to about 1093 C, so that a completely new area of application has been opened up for soldered connections.
Since the nickel solder alloys came into use, many parts exposed to high temperatures in aircraft, nuclear reactors, etc. are connected to one another by soldering. So far, three classes of high-temperature soldering alloys have essentially been used: 1. Nickel-chromium-silicon-boron alloys 2. Nickel-chromium-silicon boron alloys and 3. Nickel-chromium-silicon alloys. The soldering alloys, which are suitable for hollow temperatures, gain their high temperature stability because their composition changes during soldering. These changes in the composition are caused by various elements, for example boron and silicon, which diffuse out of the solder alloy and into the metal to be joined.
These elements support the production of a good connection not only because they flow into the metals to be connected, but also because they deeply echoed the melting range of the soldering alloy during soldering, but the melting point of the made. Establish connection. However, the diffusion process tends to cause erosion when soldering thin materials. The use of high-temperature-resistant soldering in aircraft propulsion machines and parts thereof has therefore not yet been very successful.
It was necessary to solve a number of relatively critical metallurgical problems in order to actually achieve good bonds using high temperature resistant solder joints.
Betan soldering consists essentially of the following four problems: 1. The material to be connected is solved by the soldering alloys; 2. the connections made are very hard; 3. the metals to be connected are changed unfavorably by the soldering process; 4. The atmosphere in which the soldering process is carried out is subject to certain purity requirements.
If the parts to be connected to one another by soldering are small, the heating times can be kept relatively short, so that the problem of loosening or erosion of the base material practically does not occur. On the other hand, if large parts are to be firmly connected to one another by soldering, the heating time cannot possibly be kept short. When connecting thin materials, if the soldering alloys available today are used, erosion phenomena are practically inevitable. In the case of high-temperature soldered connections, the connection points are extremely hard, which is a consequence of the hardness of the eutectic phase contained in the soldering alloys. This is due to the fact that many solder alloys were originally developed as hard materials.
There are currently no soldering alloys or soldering mixtures available that allow the connection of thin materials, for example 0.125 mm thick, without the material in the vicinity of the connection point being eroded and partially loosened.
It is a purpose of the present invention to overcome the difficulties outlined above by creating a new brazing mixture which does not erode or loosen the material to be joined. Erosion and loosening occurred when using those previously available. Solder alloys always on. The invention be thus intended to create a soldering mixture with which thin sheets that could not be soldered before, can be connected to one another, resulting in non-brittle soldered joints.
The brazing mixture according to the present invention for cobalt, iron or nickel alloys bribing sheets contains a powdered brazing alloy of at least three elements of the following group: chromium, nickel, silicon and boron. It is characterized in that it also at least a powdery metal of the following. Group: contains iron, nickel, cobalt or a powdery alloy of these metals, the solder alloy making up 70-90% by weight and the powdery metal or powdery metal alloy making up 10 to 30% by weight.
Two elements that have been used in previously used solder materials and that tend to drift off. to diffuse away are boron and silicon. During soldering, they diffuse out of the high-temperature soldering alloys and migrate into the materials to be connected to one another by soldering and cause erosion or dissolution here. It has been found that certain materials, if they are used together with a powdery soldering alloy for soldering, preferably combine with these elements that move away. In addition to the loosening or erosion process, the connection is extremely hard when the soldering alloy is used alone.
A soldering material according to the present invention prevents the material to be connected from being eroded or dissolved at the connection point and also prevents the connection point from becoming hammerable, that is to say not too brittle. Studies have shown that boron in nickel brazing alloys has a significantly greater erosion effect than silicon. This result could be expected because the liquidus temperature of a nickel-binary mixture is reduced by 60 C per 1 wt.% Boron (up to 4 wt.%), But only by 9 C per 1 wt.% Silicon ( up to 11% by weight).
It has been shown that erosion generally occurs at the points with which the powdery solder alloy comes into contact. Since a part of the soldering alloy usually starts flowing in a soldered joint, soot the soldering alloy is applied in large quantities at certain points so that a supply of alloy is available that can flow. However, the excess at these points contains enough silicon to erode the material by diffusion. This erosion can be avoided by providing a sponge material into which the excess silicon can diffuse.
To a powdery nickel-chromium-silicon soldering alloy, pure nickel powder is preferably added, which fulfills the function of the sponge and is alloyed with the silicon which diffuses out during the soldering ice. Although nickel solder alloys containing boning cause much more erosion processes than the corresponding alloys with silicon, solder alloys are used which contain boron in the same way as silicon.
An example of such a soldering alloy of the nickel-chromium-silicon-boron type is the alloy known under the designation AMS 4775 A, which has the following composition:

You can proceed as follows: 1.
The metal powder is mixed with a binding agent in such a way that a paste or suspension is created which adheres to the parts to be connected by soldering.
2. The powder is sprayed onto the point to be soldered by a flame, or 3. the dry powder is simply placed on the connection point to be soldered.
The binding material just mentioned can be a polymerized material which, when heated, depolymerizes to form volatile monomers without causing a thermal explosion and without leaving residues such as carbon. Examples of such binders are solutions of polyacrylic compounds and polybutenes.
After the soldered connection has been applied to the point to be connected, a part of which can already be connected by a provisional soldered connection, the point to be connected is introduced into a soldering furnace. The atmosphere for this furnace is preferably inert gas or a reducing atmosphere; there can also be a vacuum in the furnace. The temperature in the furnace is now brought to the level required for the alloy in question, which is between 949 and 1260 C, whereby the object to be soldered remains exposed to this temperature for between half a minute and 60 minutes so that the solder alloy is in the Connection point flows. The connected piece is now cooled by switching off the oven or by placing it in a cooling zone located near the oven.
However, the piece must definitely be cooled in one of the three atmospheres mentioned above. It has been found that when soldering mixtures are used to connect thin sheet metal, especially with thicknesses below 1.3 mm, a very strong reduction and control of erosion and dissolution is possible, in contrast to the use of the alloy without addition. It has also been shown that the soldered connection formed in this way is not as hard and brittle as soldered connections that have been produced by alloys without additives.
A preferred composition for the solder mixture consisted of 10-30% by weight of metal powder which had been mixed well with 70% to 90% by weight of the solder alloy.
A few exemplary embodiments for the soldering mixture according to the invention are given below.
In order to eliminate the diffusion damage caused by boron, a boron-free alloy of the nickel-chrome-silicon type was prepared for the production of honeycomb-like reinforced support parts with the following composition:

80% by weight of the above-described solder alloy in powder forums and with a mesh fineness of 125 meshes per cm was mixed with 20% by weight of nickel powder with a mesh fineness of 125 meshes per cm. This mixture was mixed with a solution of acrylic resin in toluene, so that a paste was formed, which was applied to the connection point to be soldered. The two individual parts were attached to each other with a temporary connection. In the present example, the object to be soldered consisted of two 0.25 mm thick struts that were to be connected to one another by honeycomb-like reinforcements 0.05 mm thick. The parts consisted of a stainless steel alloy known under the type designation 321 of the A.I.S.I.
The parts were then placed in a soldering furnace with the air atmosphere removed and a hydrogen atmosphere introduced. The temperature in the furnace was now brought to 1204 C, which corresponded to the prescribed temperature value for the alloy used. The parts were held in the furnace for nine times until the alloy had flowed into the joint. Insane In the present case, the time required was 5 minutes.
The piece was then placed in a cooling zone inside the furnace, which also contained the furnace atmosphere. Although earlier attempts to use 0.05 mm thick A.I. S.I. Soldering steel alloy 321 always led to severe erosion and dissolution of the thin material and only brittle, very hard connection points could be made, the solder connection made with the material described was only very slightly eroded and loosened, while the connection compound, compared to that made with the alloy without addition was relatively soft. The surface of the connection point described was still very smooth.
To compare the tensile strength and shear strength of the connection produced by the new mixture with the connection made without addition to the solder alloy, two groups of samples were produced. The samples consisted of overlapping connections of two 1.6 mm thick sheets of a material with the following composition:
