Description

  Method of sterilization
The invention relates to a highly effective method for sterilizing all kinds of substances and goods with the aid of mixtures containing ethylene oxide.

It is known to use gaseous mixtures of ethylene oxide with methyl bromide for the sterilization of certain foods, plastic packages, etc., since these mixtures have a bactericidal and fungicidal effect. However, despite its favorable properties, such a mixture cannot be used for all purposes, since depending on the constitution or intended use of the goods to be treated, the methyl bromide present in the mixture can adversely affect it.

It has now been found that these disadvantages can be avoided if the sterilization or sterilization is carried out with a mixture of ethylene oxide and methyl formate. The proportion of methyl formate can, for. B. between 40 and 60 vol. / E amount. This results in a mixture with excellent bactericidal and fungicidal effectiveness, but which is harmless in its use for all goods and goods, since the decomposition of methyl formate can only lead to the formation of harmless formic acid. The new mixture can therefore be used advantageously in the sterilization process wherever other agents, such as methyl bromide, are not appropriate.

The following examples show the successful application of the process due to the good germicidal effect of the mixtures according to the invention, which occurs not only additively but also synergistically.

Example 1 Test organism: Proteus vulgaris Nutrient substrate: Standard nutrient agar plates Determination of the bacterial count: Modified according to Koch using membrane filters,

The examples show that the mixtures according to the invention either show the same effect as the individual components even at a low concentration, or are considerably more effective at a comparable concentration.
