Use of Cumari derivatives as optical brightening agents for textile fibers.
********************
It has been found that fluorescent, practically colorless 7- (1-v-triazolyl) -3-aryl-coumarin derivatives of
EMI1.1
in which R1 and R2 are independently hydrogen, lower alkyl radicals, aralkyl radicals, aryl radicals, alkoxymethyl, chloromethyl, carboxyl or carbalkoxy groups, while R is hydrogen or a lower alkyl radical
3 and R4 stand for hydrogen, a lower alkyl radical, a lower alkoxy group or loe, or their quaternization products can be used with outstanding success as optical brighteners for textile fibers.
The coumarin compounds of the formula listed are suitable for lightening natural or artificial textile fibers made from wool, cellulose, cellulose esters, polyamides, polyilrethanes, polyacrylonitrile and polyesters. Particularly suitable brightening agents are the coumarin compounds which correspond to the formula given when R3 is hydrogen. The quaternization products of the gumarin compounds are particularly suitable for lightening fibers made of polyacrylonitrile or cellulose esters.
The coumarin compounds of the formula given to be used as optical brightening agents can be obtained by various processes, for example by using 4 (l-v-triazolyl) -2-alkoxy-benzaldehydes, e.g. (4- (LV-triazolyl) -2-methoxy- or -2-ethoxy-benzaldehyde, condensed with arylacetonitriles, e.g. with phenylaeetonitrile or p-tolylacetonitrile, and after splitting of the alkoxy group to the corresponding 7 (LV-triazolyl) -3- arylcoumarins cyclized.
The quaternization products can be obtained therefrom in the usual way, e.g. by reaction with dimethyl sulfate or with methyl p-toluenesulfonate. according to
The optical AufbellungsmitteY of the present invention can be used in the usual way, for example in the form of solutions in wet or in organic solution or in the form of aqueous dispersions, where the dispersant i.a. Condensation products of naphthalenesulfonic acids and formaldehyde can be used. Polyester fibers can also be treated with the whitening agents in such a way that they are soaked in solutions or dispersions of the whitening agents, then squeezed off, dried and briefly heated to temperatures above 1000C.
The lightening agents can also be used together with detergents.
The lightening agents to be used according to the invention are very economical, they are also very lightfast and also resistant to bleach baths containing chlorite.
The previously known optical brightening agents of the coumarin series do not have these advantageous properties to the same extent. The lightening agents of the present invention are distinguished from the known 7-pyrazolyl-3-aryl-coumarin derivatives in particular in that they do not lead to a greenish, but to a purely white lightening.
example 1
Polyester fibers made from terephthalic acid and glycol are treated in the liquor ratio los40 in a bath containing 1 g oleyl alcohol sulfonate, 0.75 g formic acid and 0.07 g 7- (1-v-triazolyl) -3-p-tolyl- contains coumarin.
The bath is then heated to the boil and kept at this tar temperature for 30-60 minutes. After rinsing and drying, the polyester fibers show a neutral white lightening.
The brightening agent used was prepared as follows: 35 cc of 50% potassium hydroxide solution were added dropwise to a solution of 101 g of 4- (1-v-triazolyl) -2-methoxy-benzaldehyde and 66 g of p-toluylacetonitrile in 500 cc of ethyl alcohol. The mixture was heated to 45-480 ° C. for 45 minutes and then cooled. The reaction product which separated out was filtered off and washed with water and alcohol.
The 133 g of 4- (iv-riazolyl) -2-methoxy-4 "-methyl-a-cyano-stilbene obtained with a melting point of 210-212 ° C. were suspended in 1 liter of benzene, and 310 g of aluminum chloride were added to the suspension for 6 hours The reaction mixture was then added to a mixture of 7 x ice water and 300 cm concentrated hydrochloric acid. The benzene was then distilled off with steam, the residue was cooled and the separated crystalline constituents were filtered off with suction and washed with water and then dried at 11,000.
The 7- (1-v-triazolyl) 3-p-tolylcoumarin obtained in a yield of 127 g had a melting point of 25,500.
Instead of 7- (iv-triazolyl) -3-p-tolyl-coumarin, it is also possible to use 7- (iv-triazolyl) -3-phenyl-coumarin, which is available in an analogous manner and has a melting point of 243-246 ° C owns.
Example 2s Polyacrylonitrile fibers are introduced in a liquor ratio 1:40 into an aqueous bath containing 1 g of oxalic acid, 1 g of sodium chlorite and 0.1 g of 7- (iv-tiazolyl) -3-p-tolyl-coumarin and dimethyl sulfate per liter Contains quaternization product as a lightening agent. The bath is then heated to the boil within 20 minutes and held at this temperature for 45 - 60 minutes. The polyacrylonitrile fibers are then rinsed and dried. The fibers are lightened in an excellent way.
The brightening agent used was prepared in the following manner: 4 g of 7- (1-v-triazolyl) -3-p-tolyl-coumarin, which was obtained according to the information in Example 1, were mixed with 4 in 120 cc of chlorobenzene at the boiling point g of dimethyl sulfate are added. After 4 hours, the reaction mixture was cooled, the quaternization product formed was filtered off with suction and recrystallized from water. The crystals obtained in a yield of 4.6 g had a melting point of 252-25300.
Instead of the quoted quaternization product, one can also use the quaternization product with a melting point of 196 - 1980C, obtainable from 7- (1-v-triazolyl) -3-p-tolyl-coumarin by reaction with diethyl sulfate, or that from 7- (1-v-triazolyl) Use 3- phenyl-coumarin by reaction with methyl p-toluylulfonate, a quaternization product with a melting point of 2600C.
Example 3
Polyester fibers were treated in a closed apparatus in a liquor ratio of 1:40 for 20 minutes at 120 ° C. in a bath which contained 0.125 g of the lightening agent described in the first paragraph of Example 1 per liter. The lightening agent was used in the form of a concentrated solution in dimethylformamide, and the treatment bath also contained 1 g of a commercially available emulsifier per liter.
Another sample of the same polyester fibers was treated by the same method but with the brightening agent described in the first paragraph of Example 4 of French patent specification No. 1320 597.
The comparison of the two treated samples shows that the agent according to the invention leads to a purely white brightening, while the agent of French patent f.
1320 597 leads to a thorough brightening.
