The present invention relates to a portable electrical device for body care consisting of an insulating housing forming a handle, a rod passing through this housing, a head mounted on this rod and intended to come into contact with the body. part of the body to be treated, and by an electric motor housed in the housing and imparting a periodic movement to the rod, the energized part of the motor being electrically isolated from the other elements thereof.
This device can constitute either a toothbrush, or a device for beauty care or a device for massage.
One of the difficult problems to solve in the construction of these devices is that of electrical insulation. It is in particular essential to carry out a construction which excludes all risks of accidents of an electrical nature. The electric toothbrushes currently on the market are, despite all the precautions taken, not exempt from such risks.
Thus, the detergent agents contained in known toothpastes and the movement of this rod subject the members ensuring the sealing of the case, in the zone where the rod passes through it, to chemical and mechanical stresses such as In a more or less short period of time, a technological alteration of these components occurs, allowing water to infiltrate inside the case. This water generally only has a relatively short path to cover in order to reach live components and be the cause of extremely dangerous electric shocks for the user.
The object of the present invention is to eliminate the risks of accidents of an electrical nature without giving up any of the advantages of prior constructions. For example, the control of the operation of the apparatus by members arranged in the anterior part of the casing can without difficulty be maintained.
This provision is also a necessity in toothbrushes because the user must be able to stop and start the device with the hand in which he is holding it, in particular to avoid being smashed by the toothpaste between the moment he lays it over the brush head and the moment he puts that head in his mouth.
The apparatus according to the present invention is characterized in that the operation of the rod is controlled by means without an electrical connection with said part of the motor.
The appended drawing shows, by way of example, six embodiments of the object of the invention, constituting electric toothbrushes.
Figs. 1 and 2 then 3 and 4 represent axial necks of the first and second embodiments.
Fig. 5 is a partial section of the third embodiment and FIG. 6 a section along VI-VI of FIG. 5.
Fig. 7 is a partial view of a toothbrush according to the fourth embodiment.
Figs. 8 and 9 are partial sections of the fifth and sixth embodiments.
The toothbrush of the first embodiment (fig. 1 and 2) comprises a housing 10, forming a handle and molded from plastic material, in which is housed an electric motor imparting an oscillating movement to the rod 12 on which a not shown brushing head is detachably fixed. The stator of the motor is formed by a coil 13 with a sintered core 14 supplied by an insulated cable 15 as well as by two elongated armatures 17 defining an air gap in which oscillates a rotor 18 formed of a permanent magnet. This rotor pivots in two bearings 19 and 20.
The coil 13 as well as the stripped end of the two wires of the cable 15 is overmolded by a layer of insulating material, for example a thermoplastic material such as araldite (as deposited). This type of insulation has the advantages of being extremely safe, easy to produce and of making it possible to obtain coils with particularly precise external dimensions.
A hood 22, made of an elastically deformable material and of general frustoconical shape, is fixed on the one hand to the rod 12 and on the other hand to the internal wall of the housing and this by means of a ring 23. It recalls the rotor in an angular position for which its magnetic axis is oriented perpendicularly to the length of the air gap. This cap can be pleated vertically or horizontally so as to improve its elastic qualities which play a very important role in damping the oscillating movement of the rod.
In addition, it seals the front part of the case.
The control device for stopping or starting the brush is constituted by a magnetic switch completely independent of the live part of the motor. This switch comprises two push-buttons 24 mounted at the front part of the housing in diametrically opposed positions corresponding to the points where the user normally holds the housing, a soft iron ring 25 capable of sliding on a socket of insulating material 26 fixed between the bearing 19 and ring 23,
a spring 27 normally applying this ring against the end of the two armatures 17 and two flexible blades 28 each carrying a needle 29 pressed against the ring 25.
In the rest state of the switch, the ring magnetically short-circuits the gap of the stator, that is to say it diverts therefrom the flux generated by the coil 13 when the stator brush is plugged into its power source. By exerting pressure on the pushers 24, the blades 28 flex elastically towards each other and the pins 29 axially move the ring 25 away from the armatures 17, against the action of the spring 27,
which eliminates the short-circuit and causes, the coil being energized, the starting of the motor.
The second embodiment (fig. 3 and 4) differs from the first by the construction of the magnetic switch which comprises, instead of the ring 25, two soft iron plates 30, fixed to the ends of two levers. 31 pivoted on the bearing 19, which are applied under the action of two springs 32, on the edge of the frames 17 and which are moved away when pressing on the pushers 24.
In these two embodiments, the magnetic switches do not allow the motor to be left constantly under tension, which would cause it to heat up; in fact, they are only provided during the short time the brush has been connected to the network for use.
In the third embodiment (fig. 5 and 6) the motor is set in motion as soon as the brush is connected to the network. The movement of the rod 12 can however be stopped by pressing the buttons 24 which act through a hood 33 on two shoes 35 bearing against a bearing surface 34 of the rod. These shoes are made of plastic and constitute the end of two resilient rods 36 secured to a ring 37 driven on the frame of the engine. Of course, as soon as the user of the device releases his pressure on the buttons 24, the brake constituted by the shoes 35 is also released and the brush starts up again.
In a variant not shown, the shoes and the rods on which they are mounted could be cut from the mass of a plastic tube, the end of which could be mounted in place of the ring 37. 39 indicates or vertures made in the front part of the housing to allow a stream of water to come rinse the limited space between this part of the housing and the hood. This rinsing is made necessary to remove deposits, in particular deposits of bacteria and mold, which form in this space. This arrangement eliminates the usual sealing point mounted between the housing and the rod and which has so far been one of the most delicate points of the toothbrush.
In the fourth embodiment (fig. 7), the mechanical brake is constituted only by a knurling 40 made on the removable rod carrying the brushing head and on which the user acts with the fingers to stop the oscillation. .
In the fifth embodiment (fig. 8), the coil not shown of the motor is insulated by overmolding an insulating material as shown in figs. 1 and 3. On the other hand, the motor is controlled by an electric switch formed by two semi-circular blades 41 and 42 re linked by an insulated cable to the coil. These blades are housed in an annular groove 43 made in a part 44 of plastic material secured to the engine frame.
A hood 45 of deformable plastic material closes the groove absolutely tight. The switch is closed by the small slide 46 acting on the blade 41 by forming the hood 45 and has a reinforcement 46 at this location. This slide is itself controlled by an inclined plane 47 secured to a radial slide 48 controlled by pressure on buttons 24.
In the sixth embodiment (FIG. 9) the switch, not shown, is housed in a cylindrical pleated hood 49 disposed in a housing of a plastic part 50 integral with the frame. This switch is also controlled by a slider 51 acting on the reinforcement 52 of the cap and controlled by the transverse displacement of a tenon 53.
Of course the various control devices by means of mechanical or magnetic brakes or by means of an electric switch could be actuated by one or the other of the following devices The apparatus being normally in the off state or in the running state we could make it pass from one state to another by pressing one or two buttons and bring it back to its original state by releasing the button (s). We could also provide only one button on which we would act successively to switch the device from one state to another.
Finally, we could still provide a button to start the device and a button to stop it (system on-off).
