Process for forming hollow plastic objects
and machine for its implementation
The present invention includes a method of forming hollow plastic articles, in which the plastic material is extruded through a die, which is characterized by varying the output rate of the die, to produce variations. thickness of the material at predetermined locations of the desired object.
The invention also comprises a machine for implementing this method, which is characterized in that it comprises a control device according to the program of the output flow rate of the die, to automatically vary the thickness of the material to be predetermined locations of the desired object.
The appended drawing illustrates schematically and by way of example three embodiments of the method and of the machine according to the invention.
Figs. 1, 2 and 3 are partial sectional views of the first embodiment of the machine, showing the members in three different positions.
Figs. 4,5,6 and 7 are partial sectional views of the second embodiment of the machine, showing the successive phases of the work of this machine.
Figs. 8, 9, 10 etllsont views similar to FIGS. 4 to 7, but relating to the third embodiment.
In the example shown in FIG. 1, the machine comprises a die 1 for forming by extrusion a plastic tube 2.
The die is fed by a screw 3 from a material reservoir not shown in the drawing.
Upstream of the die and in the immediate vicinity thereof there is a cylindrical chamber 4, into which the material compressed by the screw 3 arrives.
In this cylindrical chamber can slide a piston 5, the movement of which makes it possible to vary the volume of this chamber.
The operation of the embodiment shown in FIGS. 1 to 3 is as follows:
When the screw 3 rotates at constant speed and the piston 5 is stationary, the plastic tube 2 comes out continuously from the die 1 and has a constant wall thickness. If at any time (fig. 2) the piston 5 is moved down from the position shown in fig. 1, this has the effect of increasing the pressure to which the plastic material is subjected in the chamber 4, which results in determining an increase in the thickness of the tube 2 exiting the die, as indicated in 6 in fig. 2. This increase in thickness will occur as long as the piston 5 goes down.
When it comes to a standstill, the pressure in chamber 4 returns to what it was at the start and the new section of tube emerging from the die resumes its original thickness. If now the piston 5 is moved upwards (fig. 3), this results in a decrease in the pressure in the chamber 4 (fig. 3), which results in a decrease in the thickness of the outgoing tube section. of the die, as indicated at 7 in FIG. 3.
It can be seen from the foregoing that by controlling the movement of the piston 5 according to a predetermined program, it is possible to automatically obtain a section (tubular in the example described but which could equally well be solid) exhibiting distributed variations in thickness of a way fixed in advance on its length.
The example according to fig. 4 to 7 relates to the manufacture of a plastic container by blow molding using the method described with reference to FIGS. 1 to 3.
At 8 is the supply die, from which is extruded a plastic tube 9, inside the free end of which is engaged a blowing rod 10. The die 8 is movable vertically in the drawing, to the interior of a mold in two separable parts 11, 12.
In fig. 4, the mold is shown open, and the die 8, in its position corresponding to the start of a work cycle.
The machine comprises, for the supply of the die, a device such as that shown in FIGS. 1 to 3. For controlling the piston 5 of this device, there is provided a member designated schematically by a part 13 movable in synchronism with the die8. 1 4b schematically shows a fixed reference relative to the part 13. This part has means 15, which may be openings controlling pneumatic or hydraulic conduits, or electrical contact parts controlling relays. The means 15 located in the right-hand part of the member 13, facing the positive sign (+) determine a movement of the piston 5 (fig. 1 to 3) downwards, that is to say an increase pressure in chamber 4. The duration of this action corresponds to the length of the opening or contact 15.
Likewise, the means 16, provided on the left part of the member 15, facing the negative sign (-), as seen in FIGS. 5, 6 and 7, control the movement of the piston 5 in the direction of a decrease in pressure in the chamber 4.
Starting from the position shown in FIG. 4, it can be seen that the mark 14 is then located just before the beginning of the line schematizing the means 15. The pressure in the chamber 4 is therefore normal and the thickness of the tube 9 is itself normal. The die 8 and the member 13 starting to rise, the means 15 arrives opposite the mark 14 and controls the movement of the piston 5 downwards, which momentarily produces an excess thickness of the tube, as indicated at 9a in FIG. 5. Then, once 15 has ceased to be opposite 14, a part 17 is presented opposite 14 corresponding to immobilization of the piston 5, then the means 16 which arrives opposite 14, which produces a displacement of the piston 5 in the direction of a decrease in pressure in the chamber 4. This has the effect of a decrease in thickness indicated at 9b in the tube exiting the die.
After that, a new immobilization of the piston 5 takes place when the inactive part 17a of the member 13 is opposite the mark 14. After that, it is a means 15a, analogous to 15, which becomes active and determines an increase d 'thickness, as indicated in 9c. Finally, after a new inactive part, 17b, it is a means 16a which comes into play to cause a reduction in the thickness of the tube, as indicated at 9d in FIG. 6. After that, the piston stops until the end of the operating cycle and the start of the next cycle.
Fig. 6 shows the shape of the tubular blank produced as just described and which is characterized by variations in thickness along this blank. Once 16a has finished acting, the two parts 11, 12 of the mold close and a pressurized gas is blown at 18 into the mold, which applies the extruded material against the inside wall of the mold to make it. fit the shape. Then, all that remains is to extract the molded object 19 and the operations relating to the next cycle start again, as described above.
In the manufacture by blow molding of a hollow body, the thickness obtained depends on the initial wall before expansion. If we start from a blank with a constant wall, and we blow it inside a mold, the further we move away from the pitch diameter, the thinner the wall obtained will be. The articles thus produced exhibit detrimental resistance irregularities in certain applications.
By giving, as described above, different thicknesses at different places along the length of the tube, it is possible to give more material where necessary, by a kind of pre-distribution, which is not necessary. It is not possible to obtain, after blowing, rational shapes from the point of view of their mechanical strength, thus avoiding the above-mentioned defect of the conventional process.
In the example following fig. 8 to 11, we find identically all that has been described with regard to FIGS. 4 to 7, and for this reason, the homologous parts will be designated by the same reference numbers. However, in addition, this third embodiment comprises the following means:
The blowing rod 10 is supplied with pressurized gas through a pipe 20, provided with a controlled valve 21 serving to adjust the blowing pressure. This valve is controlled by a cam 22 movable in synchronism with the member 13 and the die 8. The valve 21 is constantly urged, by means not shown, to occupy a position corresponding to the full opening of the orifice it ordered.
For this position, the pressurized gas arriving at 20 escapes freely at the location of the valve thus opened and the blowing pressure exerted inside the extruded tube 9 is practically equal to the ambient pressure. The operation of this third embodiment is as follows:
In the position shown in fig. 8, the member 14 controls the piston 5 in the direction corresponding to a decrease in the pressure in the chamber 4. The tube section during extrusion then has a thickness less than normal.
13 and 22 continuing to rise in synchronism with 8, a nose 23 of the cam 22 closes more or less completely, but only momentarily, the valve 21, at the same time as the member 15 causes a displacement of the piston 5 in the direction an increase in pressure in the chamber 4.
These two simultaneous actions have the effect of causing a local increase in the thickness of the extruded tube and an expansion by blowing of this part, as indicated at 24 in FIG. 9. As the movement of 13 and 22 occurs, slight variations in pressure corresponding to parts 24 and 25 of the cam occur, with no variation in the thickness of the extruded blank except an increase in diameter. of part 24, as seen at 24a in FIG. 10, then a further increase in thickness takes place at the same time as an increase in pressure caused by the part 26 of the cam, which determines the formation of a second bulge, 27, with a thick wall.
Thus, by the combined play of the variation in the feed pressure of the material in the die and the variation in the blowing pressure, a preform is obtained shown at 28 in FIG. 10, the profile of which substantially approximates the internal shape of the mold.
The parts of this preform which will be the most strongly deformed during the final blowing (24a and 27) are made with an extra thickness intended to compensate for the thinning due to the blowing.
Then, it is the end part 29 of the cam 13 which acts to completely close the valve 21 and perform the final blowing applying against the interior wall of the mold the material of the preform 28 (FIG. 10). This is how the molded object 30, visible in FIG. 11.
The variation in pressure in the chamber 4 and consequently the variation in the flow rate of the die and then the variations in thickness of the extruded material could be obtained not by means of an auxiliary piston 5 but by using a screw 3 which, at the same time instead of rotating at constant speed, would rotate at a variable speed controlled according to a program, according to the variation in thickness to be given to the extruded material.
