Exemple I
Process for the polymerization of butadiene
The polymerization of diolefins produces, depending on the catalysts used, polymers of various structures. According to Belgian patent No. 549544, it is known to polymerize butadiene using specific catalysts and to obtain a polymer with a 1, 2 predominant sequence. These catalysts consist of reaction products of an organometallic compound of a metal of groups I, II or III of the periodic system with an oxygen-containing compound of a transition metal of groups IV, V or VI.
The object of the present invention is a process for the polymerization of butadiene- (1,3) into solid and non-sticky polymers with a predominant 1,2-chain, characterized in that the liquid or dissolved butadiene is brought into contact with a catalyst obtained by reacting an organometallic sodium compound with a compound of a metal from groups
VII and VIII of the periodic system. The properties of the polymer can be improved by adding, in limited amounts, an organometallic compound of cadmium or zinc to the organometallic compound of sodium.
As organometallic sodium compounds, amyl sodium is generally used; these compounds are generally prepared according to known methods, for example by the action of finely divided sodium on an alkyl chloride.
The organometallic compounds of cadmium and zinc can also be obtained by known methods.
The compounds of metals of group VII and VIII of the periodic system used to prepare the catalysts are, for example, anhydrous chlorides of manganese, iron, nickel and cobalt or oxygenated organic derivatives, for example nickel acetylacetonate, cobalt acetylacetonate. It should be noted that iron acetylacetonate is not suitable.
The proportions of the constituents entering into the preparation of the catalyst can vary within the following limits: for 1 mole of compound of the transition metal, one uses advantageously 0.5 to 5 moles, preferably 1 to 3 moles of organometallic compound of sodium and 0 0.05 to 1 mole, preferably 0.1 to 0.4 mole of the organometallic compound of cadmium or zinc.
The polymerization is generally carried out in the presence of suitable solvents. An aliphatic hydrocarbon such as pentane is preferably employed. In the case of the polymerization of liquid butadiene, one can be satisfied with the quantity of solvent necessary for the handling of the catalyst.
The polymerization temperature is generally between -40 and +400 C, it is preferably 200 C and the pressure 1.5 atmospheres.
When the polymerization takes place at ordinary pressure, the temperature is generally below the boiling point of butadiene. The duration of the reaction can be between 4 and 24 hours, it is preferably 20 hours.
The catalyst is introduced into the reaction medium preferably before or during the polymerization. In the case where the operation is carried out in the presence of a solvent, the addition of the catalyst is advantageously carried out before the introduction of butadiene into the solvent.
After the polymerization, the catalyst is generally destroyed with an aliphatic alcohol and the polymer washed successively with ethanol acidified with hydrochloric acid, with water and finally with ethanol. In order to avoid degradation of the polymer during drying, it is advantageous to add an antioxidant such as beta-phenylnaphthylamine to the methanol.
The polymers obtained according to the present invention are non-sticky solids, the major part of which is insoluble in boiling diethyl ether.
The infrared spectrum of these polymers shows that they contain at least 70% of 1,2-chain units.
The polymers prepared according to the present invention can be used in the manufacture of articles molded by compression or injection, extruded into sheets, sheaths or threads, melt spun or from solutions.
Example I
100 g of pure butadiene (1,3) are condensed at -400C in a glass flask. The catalyst consisting of the reaction product, suspended in 60 cm3 of pentane, is added thereto, while stirring, 25 millimoles of amylsodium and 3 millimoles of diethylzinc on the one hand with 10 μl of anhydrous iron trichloride. somewhere else. Stirred for one hour at -400 ° C., then allowed to slowly rise in temperature to evaporate the excess monomer.
After 24 hours, the product is treated with ethanol.
The filtered polymer is then washed with methanol acidified with hydrochloric acid, then several times with water to dissolve the salts formed. The last time is washed with ethanol containing beta phenylnaphthylamine and the polymer is dried at room temperature. 45 g of a solid white product are collected. The linkage rate 1.2 is 73%.
The part insoluble in boiling ether represents 56% of the total weight.
Example 2
10 millimoles of anhydrous iron trichloride are added to a suspension of 25 millimoles of amylsodium in 150 cm3 of pentane. The catalyst is transferred to an iron tube with a capacity of 280 cm3 resistant to pressure and fitted with a pressure gauge. A cover is fitted to it on which there is a regulator. This tube is then placed vertically and connected by its lower part to a butadiene cylinder. A stream of butadiene- (1,3) is then passed in order to eliminate the air remaining inside the tube, then the pressure reducer is closed and gaseous butadiene is admitted until saturation of the pentane under 1.5 kg. / cm2. This pressure is maintained for 20 hours at 200 ° C. The excess gas is then eliminated through the upper part of the tube and the contents of the latter treated with ethanol in order to destroy the catalyst.
The polymer is purified by washing as indicated in Example 1. 30 g of solid product is collected, with the predominant 1,2 linkage (74%). The part insoluble in boiling ether represents 36% of the total weight.
When we add to the 25 millimoles of amylsodium 1.15 millimoles of diethylcadmium and then
10 millimoles of iron trichloride, a catalyst is obtained which provides, under the same conditions, 16 g of a solid polymer with 77% 1,2-chain units. The part insoluble in boiling ether represents 66% of the total weight.

Example 5
A catalyst is prepared by adding 10 millimoles of nickel acetylacetonate to a mixture of 25 millimoles of amyl sodium and 3.16 millimoles of diethyl cadmium. Under the conditions of Example 2, 15 g of a polymer containing 72% of 1,2 chain reaction are obtained, the part of which is insoluble in ether constitutes 55% of the total weight.
Example 6
Under the conditions of Example 2, butadiene is polymerized with a catalyst consisting of the reaction product of 10 millimoles of anhydrous cobalt chloride (CoCL2) with 25 millimoles of amyl sodium. 11 g of a predominantly 1,2-chain polymer (73%) are collected, the part of which is insoluble in boiling ether represents 36% of the total weight. This latter figure reaches 83% when 3.16 millimoles of diethyl cadmium are added to the 25 millimoles of amyl sodium.
Example 7

The latter figure reaches 70% when 3.16 millimoles of diethyl cadmium are added to the 25 millimoles of amyl sodium.
